Let $G$ be a connected graph with $V(G)=\{v_1,\ldots,v_n\}$. The $(i,j)$-entry of the distance matrix $D(G)$ of $G$ is the distance between $v_i$ and $v_j$. In this article, using the well-known Ramsey's theorem, we prove that for each integer $k\ge 2$, there is a finite amount of graphs whose distance matrices have rank $k$. We exhibit the list of graphs with distance matrices of rank $2$ and $3$. Besides, we study the rank of the distance matrices of graphs belonging to a family of graphs with their diameters at most two, the trivially perfect graphs. We show that for each $η\ge 1$ there exists a trivially perfect graph with nullity $η$. We also show that for threshold graphs, which are a subfamily of the family of trivially perfect graphs, the nullity is bounded by one.
We solve the problem of characterizing the Kronecker structure of a matrix pencil obtained by a rank-one perturbation of another matrix pencil. The results hold over arbitrary fields.
We continue to study the rank functions of tropical matrices. In this paper, we explain how to reduce the computation of ranks for matrices over the `supertropical semifield' to the standard tropical case. Using a counting approach, we prove the existence of a $01$-matrix with many ones and without large all-one submatrices, and we put our results together and construct an $n\times n$ matrix with tropical rank $o(n^{0.5+\varepsilon})$ and Kapranov rank $n-o(n)$.
In this paper, we develop a polynomial time algorithm to compute a Dulmage-Mendelsohn-type decomposition of a matrix partitioned into submatrices of rank at most $1$.
In this paper we study properties and invariants of matrix codes endowed with the rank metric, and relate them to the covering radius. We introduce new tools for the analysis of rank-metric codes, such as puncturing and shortening constructions. We give upper bounds on the covering radius of a code by applying different combinatorial methods. We apply the various bounds to the classes of maximal rank distance and quasi maximal rank distance codes.
We study the maximal rank in affine subspaces of symmetric or alternating matrices, in terms of the matching numbers of certain associated graphs. Applications include simple proofs of upper bounds on the dimension of such subspaces in terms of their maximal rank.
We investigate punctured maximum rank distance codes in cyclic models for bilinear forms of finite vector spaces. In each of these models we consider an infinite family of linear maximum rank distance codes obtained by puncturing generalized twisted Gabidulin codes. We calculate the automorphism group of such codes and we prove that this family contains many codes which are not equivalent to any generalized Gabidulin code. This solves a problem posed recently by Sheekey in [30].
In this article we construct a new family of linear maximum rank distance (MRD) codes for all parameters. This family contains the only known family for general parameters, the Gabidulin codes, and contains codes inequivalent to the Gabidulin codes. This family also contains the well-known family of semifields known as Generalised Twisted Fields. We also calculate the automorphism group of these codes, including the automorphism group of the Gabidulin codes.
We consider a space of sparse Boolean matrices of size $n \times n$, which have finite co-rank over $GF(2)$ with high probability. In particular, the probability such a matrix has full rank, and is thus invertible, is a positive constant with value about $0.2574$ for large $n$. The matrices arise as the vertex-edge incidence matrix of 1-out 3-uniform hypergraphs The result that the null space is finite, can be contrasted with results for the usual models of sparse Boolean matrices, based on the vertex-edge incidence matrix of random $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For this latter model, the expected …
We prove the conjecture that, for any $n$, the monoid of all $n \times n$ tropical matrices satisfies nontrivial semigroup identities. To this end, we prove that the factor rank of a large enough power of a tropical matrix does not exceed the tropical rank of the original matrix.
We show that computing the minimum rank of a sign pattern matrix is NP hard. Our proof is based on a simple but useful connection between minimum ranks of sign pattern matrices and the stretchability problem for pseudolines arrangements. In fact, our hardness result shows that it is already hard to determine if the minimum rank of a sign pattern matrix is $\leq 3$. We complement this by giving a polynomial time algorithm for determining if a given sign pattern matrix has minimum rank $\leq 2$. Our result answers one of the open problems from Linial et al. [Combinatorica, 27(4):439--463, 2007].
In this paper we extend the study of linear spaces of upper triangular matrices endowed with the flag-rank metric. Such metric spaces are isometric to certain spaces of degenerate flags and have been suggested as suitable framework for network coding. In this setting we provide a Singleton-like bound which relates the parameters of a flag-rank-metric code. This allows us to introduce the family of maximum flag-rank distance codes, that are flag-rank-metric codes meeting the Singleton-like bound with equality. Finally, we provide several constructions of maximum flag-rank distance codes.
In this paper we construct infinite families of non-linear maximum rank distance codes by using the setting of bilinear forms of a finite vector space. We also give a geometric description of such codes by using the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries and we show that these families contain the non-linear maximum rank distance codes recently provided by Cossidente, Marino and Pavese.
We study the problem of low-rank matrix completion for symmetric matrices. The minimum rank of a completion of a generic partially specified symmetric matrix depends only on the location of the specified entries, and not their values, if complex entries are allowed. When the entries are required to be real, this is no longer the case and the possible minimum ranks are called typical ranks. We give a combinatorial description of the patterns of specified entires of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices that have $n$ as a typical rank. Moreover, we describe exactly when such a generic partial matrix is…
The square root rank of a nonnegative matrix $A$ is the minimum rank of a matrix $B$ such that $A=B \circ B$, where $\circ$ denotes entrywise product. We show that the square root rank of the slack matrix of the correlation polytope is exponential. Our main technique is a way to lower bound the rank of certain matrices under arbitrary sign changes of the entries using properties of the roots of polynomials in number fields. The square root rank is an upper bound on the positive semidefinite rank of a matrix, and corresponds the special case where all matrices in the factorization are rank-one.
