We investigate different notions of linear independence and of matrix rank that are relevant for max-plus or tropical semirings. We prove identities on compound matrices in extended tropical semirings. Such identities include analogues to properties of conjugate matrices, powers of matrices and~$\adj(A)\det(A)^{ -1}$, all of which have implications on the eigenvalues of the corresponding matrices. The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. We show that every tropical totally positive matrix can be uniquely represented as the transfer matrix of a canonical totally connected weighted planar network. We deduce a uniqueness theorem for the factorization of a tropical totally positive in terms of elementary Jacobi matrices.

In this paper, we introduce and analyze a normalization method for solving a system of linear equations over tropical semirings. We use a normalization method to construct an associated normalized matrix, which gives a technique for solving the system. Let $K$ be a field equipped with a valuation. Tropical varieties over $K$ can be defined with a theory of Gröbner bases taking into account the valuation of $K$. In this paper, we present methods for solving a system of linear equations, $ AX=b $, over tropical semirings. To this end, if possible, we first reduce the order of the system through some row-column analysis, and obtain a new system with fewer equations and variables. We then use the pseudo-inverse of the system matrix to solve the system if solutions exist. Moreover, we propose a new version of Cramer's rule to determine the maximal solution of the system. Maple procedures for computing the pseudo-inverse are included as well.
