Given a prime power $p^d$ with $p$ a prime and $d$ a positive integer, we classify the finite groups $G$ with $p^{2d}$ dividing $|G|$ in which all subgroups of order $p^d$ are complemented and the finite groups $G$ having a normal elementary abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that $p^d<|P|$ in which all subgroups of order $p^d$ are complemented.
Let G be a finite Chevalley group and B a Borel subgroup. Then the interval [B,G] in L(G) is Boolean. We prove, using Zsigmondy's theorem, that for any element P in the open interval (B,G), its lattice-complement P^c is not a group-complement.
We define the notion of preGarside group slightly lightening the definition of Garside group so that all Artin-Tits groups are preGarside groups. This paper intends to give a first basic study on these groups. Firstly, we introduce the notion of parabolic subgroup, we prove that any preGarside group has a (partial) complemented presentation, and we characterize the parbolic subgroups in terms of these presentations. Afterwards we prove that the amalgamated product of two preGarside groups along a common parabolic subgroup is again a preGarside group. This enables us to define the family of pre…
In this paper we consider the {\em conjugacy stability} property of subgroups and provide effective procedures to solve the problem in several classes of groups. In particular, we start with free groups, that is, we give an effective procedure to find out if a finitely generated subgroup of a free group is conjugacy stable. Then we further generalize this result to quasi-convex subgroups of torsion-free hyperbolic groups and finitely generated subgroups of limit groups.
For a non-cyclic finite group $X$ let $σ(X)$ be the least number of proper subgroups of $X$ whose union is $X$. Precise formulas or estimates are given for $σ(S \wr C_{m})$ for certain nonabelian finite simple groups $S$ where $C_m$ is a cyclic group of order $m$.
Given a finite non-cyclic group $G$, call $σ(G)$ the least number of proper subgroups of $G$ needed to cover $G$. In this paper we give lower and upper bounds for $σ(G)$ for $G$ a group with a unique minimal normal subgroup $N$ isomorphic to $A_n^m$ where $n \geq 5$ and $G/N$ is cyclic. We also show that $σ(A_5 \wr C_2)=57$.
Free products of two residually finite groups with amalgamated retracts are considered. It is proved that a cyclic subgroup of such a group is not finitely separable if, and only if, it is conjugated with a subgroup of a free factor which is not finitely separable in this factor. A similar result is obtained for the case of separability in the class of finite p-groups.
We prove a dual version of Øystein Ore's theorem on distributive intervals in the subgroup lattice of finite groups, having a nonzero dual Euler totient $\hatφ$. For any Boolean group-complemented interval, we observe that $\hatφ = φ\neq 0$ by the original Ore's theorem. We also discuss some applications in representation theory. We conjecture that $\hatφ$ is always nonzero for Boolean intervals. In order to investigate it, we prove that for any Boolean group-complemented interval $[H,G]$, the graded coset poset $\hat{P} = \hat{C}(H,G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay and the nontrivial reduced Betti number…
We give an explicit construction of a maximal torsion-free finite-index subgroup of a certain type of Coxeter group. The subgroup is constructed as the fundamental group of a finite and non-positively curved polygonal complex. First we consider the special case where the universal cover of this polygonal complex is a hyperbolic building, and we construct finite-index embeddings of the fundamental group into certain cocompact lattices of the building. We show that in this special case the fundamental group is an amalgam of surface groups over free groups. We then consider the general case, and …
Suppose that $G$ is a group, $H$ and $K$ are proper isomorphic central subgroups of $G$, and $\mathfrak{G}$ is an HNN-extension of $G$ with the associated subgroups $H$ and $K$. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfrak{G}$ to be residually a $\mathcal{C}$-group, where $\mathcal{C}$ is a class of groups closed under taking subgroups, extensions, homomorphic images, and Cartesian products of the form $\prod_{y \in Y}X_{y}$, where $X, Y \in \mathcal{C}$ and $X_{y}$ is an isomorphic copy of $X$ for each $y \in Y$.
We give a concrete characterization of the rational conjugacy classes of maximal tori in groups of type G2, focusing on the case of number fields and p-adic fields. In the same context we characterize the rational conjugacy classes of A2 subgroups of G2. Having obtained the concrete characterization, we then relate it to the more abstract characterization which can be given in terms of Galois cohomology. We note that these results on A2 subgroups were simultaneously and independently developed in the work of Hooda whereas the results on tori were simultaneously and independently developed in t…
We describe an algorithm that computes the index of a finitely generated subgroup in a finitely $L$-presented group provided that this index is finite. This algorithm shows that the subgroup membership problem for finite index subgroups in a finitely $L$-presented group is decidable. As an application, we consider the low-index subgroups of some self-similar groups including the Grigorchuk group, the twisted twin of the Grigorchuk group, the Grigorchuk super-group and the Hanoi 3-group
We prove that the Bredon cohomological dimension and the virtual cohomological dimension coincide for groups that admit a cocompact model for $\underline{E}G$ and satisfy properties (M) and (NM). Among the examples of groups satisfying these hypothesis are cocompact and arithmetic Fuchsian groups, one relator groups, the Hilbert modular group and $3$-manifold groups.
We determine the combinatorial depth of certain subgroups of simple Suzuki groups Sz(q), among others the depth of their maximal subgroups. We apply these results to determine the ordinary depth of these subgroups.
Let C be the centralizer in a finite Weyl group of an elementary abelian 2-subgroup. We show that every complex representation of C can be realized over the field of rational numbers. The same holds for a Sylow 2-subgroup of C.
We extend the Howlett-Isaacs theorem on the solvability of groups of central type taking into account actions by automorphisms. Then we study certain induced characters whose constituents have all the same degree.
Supercharacter theory is developed by P. Diaconis and I. M. Isaacs as a natural generalization of the classical ordinary character theory. Some classical sums of number theory appear as supercharacters which are obtained by the action of certain subgroups of GLd(Zn) on Zdn. In this paper we take Zdp , p prime, and by the action of certain subgroups of GLd(Zp) we find supercharacter table of Zdp .
This paper proves under certain conditions the existence of an algorithm, which detects relatively quasiconvex subgroups $H$ of relatively hyperbolic groups $(G,\mathbb{P})$. Additionally, this algorithm outputs an induced peripheral structure of $(G,\mathbb{P})$ on $H$.
We classify closed abelian subgroups of the simple groups $G_2$, $F_4$, $Aut(so(8))$ having centralizer the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup, as well as finite abelian subgroups of certain spin and half-spin groups having finite centralizer.
We solve an open problem of Herfort and Ribes: Profinite Frobenius groups of certain type do occur as closed subgroups of free profinite products of two profinite groups. This also solves a question of Pop about prosolvable subgroups of free profinite products.
In this note we study a class of finite groups for which the orders of subgroups satisfy a certain inequality. In particular, characterizations of the well-known groups $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $S_3$ are obtained.
Let $G$ be a classical algebraic group, $X$ a maximal rank reductive subgroup and $P$ a parabolic subgroup. This paper classifies when $X\G/P$ is finite. Finiteness is proven using geometric arguments about the action of $X$ on subspaces of the natural module for $G$. Infiniteness is proven using a dimension criterion which involves root systems.
In this note, we give a new formula for the number of cyclic subgroups of a finite abelian group. This is based on applying the Burnside's lemma to a certain group action. Also, it generalizes the well-known Menon's identity.
Let FL_s(K) be the finitary linear group of degree s over an associative ring K with unity. We prove that the torsion subgroups of FL_s(K) are locally finite for certain classes of rings K. A description of some f.g. solvable subgroups of FL_s(K) are given.
A generalization of the double commutator lemma for normal subgroups is shown for invariant random subgroups of a countable group acting faithfully on a Hausdorff space. As an application, we classify ergodic invariant random subgroups of topological full groups of Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-systems. Another corollary is that for an ergodic invariant random subgroup of a branch group, a.e. subgroup $H$ must contain derived subgroups of certain rigid stabilizers. Such results can be applied towards classification of invariant random subgroups of Grigorchuk groups.
Let G be a complete Kac-Moody group of rank n \geq 2 over the finite field of order q, with Weyl group W and building Δ. We first show that if W is right-angled, then for all q \neq 1 mod 4 the group G admits a cocompact lattice Γwhich acts transitively on the chambers of Δ. We also obtain a cocompact lattice for q =1 mod 4 in the case that Δis Bourdon's building. As a corollary of our constructions, for certain right-angled W and certain q, the lattice Γhas a surface subgroup. We also show that if W is a free product of spherical special subgroups, then for all q, the group G admits a cocompa…
A subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$ is said to be an $\mathscr{H}C$-subgroup of $G$ if there exists a normal subgroup $T$ of $G$ such that $G=HT$ and $H^g \cap N_T(H)\leq H$ for all $g\in G$. In this paper, we investigate the structure of a finite group $G$ under the assumption that certain subgroups of $G$ of arbitrary prime power order are $\mathscr{H}C$-subgroups of $G$.
For normal subgoups $R$ and $S$ of a free group $F$, an identification of the subgroup $F\cap (1+\mathfrak r\mathfrak f\mathfrak s)$ is derived, and it is shown that the the quotient $\frac{F\cap (1+\mathfrak r\mathfrak f\mathfrak s)}{[R'\cap S',\, R\cap S][R'\cap S,\,R'\cap S][R\cap S',\, R\cap S']}$ is, in general, non-trivial.
Following J.S. Rose, a subgroup H of a group G is said contranormal in G if G = H^G . In a certain sense, contranormal subgroups are antipodes to subnormal subgroups. It is well known that a finite group is nilpotent if and only if it has no proper contranormal subgroups. We prove that a nilpotent-by-finite group with no proper contranormal subgroup is nilpotent. There are locally nilpotent groups with a proper contranormal subgroup. We study the structure of hypercentral groups with a finite proper contranormal subgroup.
In this article we introduce and study a class of finite groups for which the orders of normal subgroups satisfy a certain inequality. It is closely connected to some well-known arithmetic classes of natural numbers.
We show that certain algebraic structures lack freeness in the absence of the axiom of choice. These include some subgroups of the Baer-Specker group $\mathbb{Z}^ω$ and the Hawaiian earring group. Applications to slenderness, completely metrizable topological groups, length functions and strongly bounded groups are also presented
Let S be a finite graph and G be the corresponding free partially commutative group. In this paper we study subgroups generated by vertices of the graph S, which we call canonical parabolic subgroups. A natural extension of the definition leads to canonical quasiparabolic subgroups. It is shown that the centralisers of subsets of G are the conjugates of canonical quasiparabolic centralisers satisfying certain graph theoretic conditions.
We calculate the derived series of the Riordan group. To do that, we study a nested sequence of its subgroups, herein denoted by $\mathcal G_k$. By means of this sequence, we first obtain the n-th commutator subgroup of the Associated subgroup. This fact allows us to get some related results about certain groups of formal power series and to complete the proof of our main goal, Theorem 1 in this paper.
We describe a general technique for embedding certain amalgamated products into direct products. This technique provides us with a way of constructing a host of finitely presented subgroups of automatic groups which are not even asynchronously automatic. We can also arrange that such subgroups satisfy, at best, an exponential isoperimetric inequality.
This is a survey of results on random group presentations, and on random subgroups of certain fixed groups. Being a survey, this paper does not contain new results, but it offers a synthetic view of a part of this very active field of research.
We observe that automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups contain nilpotent non-abelian subgroups, namely $H_3(\mathbb{Z})$ the three-dimensional integer Heisenberg group, provided they admit a certain type of element, called an adjacent transvection. This represents a (minor) extension of a result of Charney-Vogtmann.
We compute the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariants $Σ^1$ for the generalized solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups $Γ_n$ and their finite index subgroups. Using $Σ^1$, we show that certain finite index subgroups of $Γ_n$ cannot be isomorphic to $Γ_{k}$ for any $k$. In addition, we use the BNS-invariants to give a new proof of property $R_\infty$ for the groups $Γ_n$ and their finite index subgroups.
We describe here the lower garland of some lattices of intermediate subgroups in linear groups. The results are applied to the case of subgroup lattices in general and special linear groups over a class of rings, containing the group of rational points T of a maximal non-split torus in the corresponding algebraic group. It turns out that these garlands coincide with the interval of the whole lattice, consisting of subgroups between T and its normalizer.
Our main goal is to determine, under certain restrictions, the maximal closed connected subgroups of simple algebraic groups containing a regular torus. We call a torus regular if its centralizer is abelian. We also obtain some results of independent interest. In particular, we determine the irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups whose non-zero weights occur with multiplicity 1.
In this paper, a question due to Heckenberger, Shareshian and Welker on racks in [7] is positively answered. A rack is a set together with a selfdistributive bijective binary operation. We show that the lattice of subracks of every finite rack is complemented. Moreover, we characterize finite modular lattices of subracks in terms of complements of subracks. Also, we introduce a certain class of racks including all finite groups with the conjugation operation, called G- racks, and we study some of their properties. In particular, we show that a finite G-rack has the homotopy type of a sphere. F…
Let F be a local field of positive characteristic, and let G be either a Heisenberg group over F, or a certain (nonabelian) two-dimensional unipotent group over F. If H is an arithmetic subgroup of G, we provide an explicit description of every automorphism of H. From this description, it follows that every automorphism of H virtually extends to a virtual automorphism of G.
A discrete subgroup $Γ$ of a locally compact group $H$ is called a uniform lattice if the quotient $H/Γ$ is compact. Such an $H$ is called an envelope of $Γ$. In this paper we study the problem of classifying envelopes of various solvable groups including the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, lamplighter groups and certain abelian-by-cyclic groups. Our techniques are geometric and quasi-isometric in nature. In particular we show that for every $Γ$ we consider there is a finite family of preferred model spaces $X$ such that, up to compact groups, $H$ is a cocompact subgroup of $Isom(X)$.
We investigate some situation in which automorphisms of a group G are uniquely determined by their restrictions to a proper subgroup H. Much of the paper is devoted to studying under which additional hypotheses this property forces G to be nilpotent if H is. As an application we prove that certain countably infinite locally nilpotent groups have uncountably many (outer) automorphisms.
For most (and possibly all) non-associative finite simple Moufang loops, three generators of order 3 can be chosen so that each two of them generate a group isomorphic to $(3, 3 | 3, p)$. The subgroup structure of $(3, 3 | 3, p)$ depends on the solvability of a certain quadratic congruence, and it is described here in terms of generators.
Given a graph of groups $\mathcal{G} = (Γ, \{G_v\}, \{G_e\})$ with certain conditions on vertex groups and $G$ acts acylindrically on its Bass-Serre tree $T$. Let $H$ be a finitely generated subgroup of $G$. We prove the following statements equivalence: $H$ has finite height, $(G, T, H)$ is a $A/QI$--triple, $H$ is strongly quasiconvex and virtually free in $G$. We also give a condition to determine whether strong quasiconvexity in a group is preserved under amalgams.
Given a finitely presented group $G$, we wish to explore the conditions under which automorphisms of quotients $G/N$ can be lifted to automorphisms of $G$. We discover that in the case where $N$ is a central subgroup of $G$, the question of lifting can be reduced to solving a certain matrix equation. We then use the techniques developed to show that $Inn(G)$ is not characteristic in $Aut(G)$, where $G$ is a metacyclic group of order $p^n$, $p\neq 2$.
We give another proof of an observation of Thévenaz \cite{T1989} and present a fusion system version of it. Namely, for a saturated fusion system $\CF$ on a finite $p$-group $S$, we show that the number of the $\CF$-conjugacy classes of cyclic subgroups of $S$ is equal to the rank of certain square matrices of numbers of orbits, coming from characteristic bisets, the characteristic idempotent and finite groups realizing the fusion system $\CF$ as in our previous work \cite{P2010}.
In this paper, we investigate boundaries of parabolic subgroups of Coxeter groups. Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and let $T$ be a subset of $S$ such that the parabolic subgroup $W_T$ is infinite. Then we show that if a certain set is quasi-dense in $W$, then $W \partialΣ(W_T,T)$ is dense in the boundary $\partialΣ(W,S)$ of the Coxeter system $(W,S)$, where $\partialΣ(W_T,T)$ is the boundary of $(W_T,T)$.
There exist right angled Artin groups $A$ such that the isomorphism problem for finitely presented subgroups of $A$ is unsolvable, and for certain finitely presented subgroups the conjugacy and membership problems are unsolvable. It follows that if $S$ is a surface of finite type and the genus of $S$ is sufficiently large, then the corresponding decision problems for the mapping class group $Mod(S)$ are unsolvable. Every virtually special group embeds in the mapping class group of infinitely many closed surfaces. Examples are given of finitely presented subgroups of mapping class groups that h…
