Given a finite group $G$ and a prime $p$, we establish the sieve formula, which is a congruence containing as summands numbers of chains of $p$-subgroups of $G$ of certain orders. This generalises the Theorem of Sylow-Frobenius, using Wielandt's approach. Its name stems from the sieve formula from set theory because of formal similarities.
Surveying some of the recent developments on approximate subgroups and super-strong approximation for thin groups, we describe the Bourgain-Gamburd method for establishing spectral gaps for finite groups and the proof of the classification of approximate subgroups of semisimple algebraic groups over finite fields. We then give a proof of the super-strong approximation for mod $p$ quotients via random matrix products and a quantitative version of strong approximation. Some applications to the group sieve are also presented.
A general sieve method for groups is formulated. It enables one to "measure" subsets of a finitely generated group. As an application we show that if $Γ$ is a finitely generated non virtually-solvable linear group of characteristic zero then the set of proper powers in $Γ$ is exponentially small. This is a far reaching strengthening of the main result of \cite{HKLS}.
We give an exact formula for the number of normal subgroups of each finite index in the Baumslag-Solitar group BS(p,q) when p and q are coprime. Unlike the formula for all finite index subgroups, this one distinguishes different Baumslag-Solitar groups and is not multiplicative. This allows us to give an example of a finitely generated profinite group which is not virtually pronilpotent but whose zeta function has an Euler product.
This paper consists of three interconnected parts. Parts I,III study the relationship between the cohomology of a reductive group and that of a Levi subgroup. For example, we provide a necessary condition, arising from Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, for the natural map on Ext-groups of irreducible modules to be surjective. In cohomological degree 1, the map is always an isomorphism, under our hypothesis. These results were inspired by recent work of Hemmer obtained for general linear groups, and they both extend and improve upon his work when our condition is met. Part II obtains results on Lusztig c…
We prove a formula connecting the number of unipotent conjugacy classes in a maximal parabolic subgroup of a finite general linear group with the numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in various parabolic subgroups in smaller dimensions. We generalise this formula and deduce a number of corollaries; in particular, we express the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices over a finite field in terms of the numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in maximal parabolic subgroups over the same field. We show how the numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in parabolic subgroups of small …
We discuss one construction of nonstandard subgroups in the category of Coxeter groups. Two formulae for the growth series of such a subgroups are given. As an application we construct a flag simple convex polytope, whose f-polynomial has non-real roots.
In this note, we give a new formula for the number of cyclic subgroups of a finite abelian group. This is based on applying the Burnside's lemma to a certain group action. Also, it generalizes the well-known Menon's identity.
The main goal of the current paper is to determine the total number of diamonds in the subgroup lattice of a finite abelian group. This counting problem is reduced to finite $p$-groups. Explicit formulas are obtained in some particular cases.
In this paper we introduce and study the concept of cyclic subgroup commutativity degree of a finite group $G$. This quantity measures the probability of two random cyclic subgroups of $G$ commuting. Explicit formulas are obtained for some particular classes of groups. A criterion for a finite group to be an Iwasawa group is also presented.
In this short note we give a formula for the number of chains of subgroups of a finite elementary abelian $p$-group. This completes our previous work [5].
For a non-cyclic finite group $X$ let $σ(X)$ be the least number of proper subgroups of $X$ whose union is $X$. Precise formulas or estimates are given for $σ(S \wr C_{m})$ for certain nonabelian finite simple groups $S$ where $C_m$ is a cyclic group of order $m$.
In this paper a new equivalence relation $\approx$ to classify the fuzzy subgroups of finite groups is introduced and studied. This generalizes the equivalence relation $\sim$ defined on the lattice of fuzzy subgroups of a finite group that has been used in our previous papers (see e.g. \cite{16,24}). Explicit formulas for the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups with respect to $\approx$ are obtained in some particular cases.
We study the effects of subgroup distortion in the wreath products A wr Z, where A is finitely generated abelian. We show that every finitely generated subgroup of A wr Z has distortion function equivalent to some polynomial. Moreover, for A infinite, and for any polynomial l^k, there is a 2-generated subgroup of A wr Z having distortion function equivalent to the given polynomial. Also a formula for the length of elements in arbitrary wreath product H wr G easily shows that the group Z_2 wr Z^2 has distorted subgroups, while the lamplighter group Z_2 wr Z has no distorted (finitely generated)…
Let $G$ be a finite non-solvable group. We prove that there exists a proper subgroup $A$ of $G$ such that $G$ is the product of three conjugates of $A$, thus replacing an earlier upper bound of $36$ with the smallest possible value. The proof relies on an equivalent formulation in terms of double cosets, and uses the following theorem which is of independent interest and wider scope: Any group $G$ with a $BN$-pair and a finite Weyl group $W$ satisfies $G=\left( Bn_{0}B\right) ^{2}=BB^{n_{0}}B$ where $n_{0}$ is any preimage of the longest element of $W$. The proof of the last theorem is formula…
We formulate and prove relative versions of several classical decompositions known in the theory of Chevalley groups over commutative rings. As an application we obtain upper estimates for the width of principal congruence subgroups in terms of several families of generators. Some of our results are new even in the absolute case and were previously studied only for groups over finite fields.
In this paper we study probabilistic aspects such as subgroup commutativity degree and cyclic subgroup commutativity degree of the (generalized) dicyclic groups. We find explicit formulas for these concepts and we provide another example of a class of groups whose (cyclic) subgroup commutativity degree vanishes asymptotically.
For a discrete group $Γ$ satisfying some finiteness conditions we give a Bredon projective resolution of the trivial module in terms of projective covers of the chain complex associated to certain posets of subgroups. We use this to give new results on dimensions of $Eγ$ and to reprove that for virtually solvable groups, $\underline{\cd}Γ=\vcdΓ$. We also deduce a formula to compute the Euler class of $Eγ$ for $Γ$ virtually solvable of type $\FP_\infty$ and use it to compute orbifold Euler characteristics.
For an epimorphism pi of the free group F_n onto a finite group G write Gamma(G,pi) for the group of all automorphisms f of F_n for which pi*f = pi. This is called the standard congruence subgroup of Aut(F_n) associated to G and pi. In the case n = 2 we present formulas for the index of Gamma(G,pi) where G is abelian or dihedral. Moreover, we show that congruence subgroups associated to dihedral groups provide a family of subgroups of arbitrary large index in Aut(F_2) generated by a fixed number of elements. This implies that finite index subgroups of Aut(F_2) cannot be written as free product…
We describe the subgroups of the group $\Z_m \times \Z_n \times \Z_r$ and derive a simple formula for the total number $s(m,n,r)$ of the subgroups, where $m,n,r$ are arbitrary positive integers. An asymptotic formula for the function $n\mapsto s(n,n,n)$ is also deduced.
We prove by using simple number-theoretic arguments formulae concerning the number of elements of a fixed order and the number of cyclic subgroups of a direct product of several finite cyclic groups. We point out that certain multiplicative properties of related counting functions for finite Abelian groups are immediate consequences of these formulae.
This paper deals with the number of subgroups of a given exponent in a finite abelian group. Explicit formulas are obtained in the case of rank two and rank three abelian groups. An asymptotic formula is also presented.
It is known that the norm map N_G for a finite group G acting on a ring R is surjective if and only if for every elementary abelian subgroup E of G the norm map N_E for E is surjective. Equivalently, there exists an element x_G in R with N_G(x_G) = 1 if and only for every elementary abelian subgroup E there exists an element x_E in R such that N_E(x_E) = 1. When the ring R is noncommutative, it is an open problem to find an explicit formula for x_G in terms of the elements x_E. In this paper we present a method to solve this problem for an arbitrary group G and an arbitrary group action on a r…
We deduce direct formulas for the total number of subgroups and the number of subgroups of a given order of the group $\Bbb{Z}_m\times \Bbb{Z}_n \times \Bbb{Z}_r \times \Bbb{Z}_s$, where $m,n,r,s\in \Bbb{N}$. The proofs are by some simple group theoretical and number theoretical arguments based on Goursat's lemma for groups. Two conjectures are also formulated.
We use recurrence relations to derive explicit formulas for counting the number of subgroups of given order (or index) in rank 3 finite abelian p-groups and use these to derive similar formulas in few cases for rank 4. As a consequence, we answer some questions by M. T$\ddot{a}$rn$\ddot{a}$uceanu in \cite{MT} and L. T$\dot{\acute{o}}$th in \cite{LT}. We also use other methods such as the method of fundamental group lattices introduced in \cite{MT} to derive a similar counting function in a special case of arbitrary rank finite abelian p-groups.
We study the higher derived functors of the inverse limit of a functor F: D --> Z_{(p)}-mod, where D is one of the standard categories which arise when studying the homotopy theory of the classifying space of a finite group G, e.g., the orbit category or the Quillen category of G. These higher limits are of importance e.g., for the study of maps between classifying spaces as well as for group cohomology. We show that these higher limits can be identified with the G-equivariant Bredon cohomology of the subgroup complex of p-subgroups in G (i.e., the nerve of the poset of p-subgroups in G) with …
The purpose of this paper is to determine the number of fuzzy subgroups of a finite abelian group of order $p^{n}q^{m}$. As an application of our main result, explicit formulas for the number of fuzzy subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{n}\times\mathbb{Z}_{q}^{m}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{p^{n}}\times\mathbb{Z}_{q}^{m}$ are given.
In this note, we formulate an observation that "almost all" irreducible ordinary characters of finite groups of Lie type remain irreducible when restricted to the derived subgroups. To see this, key ingredients are some asymptotic results for conjugacy classes of finite groups of Lie type and strongly regular semisimple elements in dual groups.
A collection C of subgroups of a finite group G can give rise to three different standard formulas for the cohomology of G in terms of either: the subgroups in C; or their centralizers; or their normalizers. We give a short but systematic study of the relationship among such formulas for nine standard collections C of p-subgroups, obtaining some new formulas in the process. To do this, we exhibit some sufficient conditions on the poset C which imply comparison results.
We deduce a simple representation and the invariant factor decompositions of the subgroups of the group $\Bbb{Z}_m \times \Bbb{Z}_n$, where $m$ and $n$ are arbitrary positive integers. We obtain formulas for the total number of subgroups and the number of subgroups of a given order.
Root subgroup factorization is a refinement of triangular (or LDU) factorization. For a complex reductive Lie group, and a choice of reduced factorization of the longest Weyl group element, the forward map from root subgroup coordinates to triangular coordinates is polynomial. We show that the inverse is rational. There is an algorithm for the inverse (involving LDU factorization), and a related explicit formula for Haar measure in root subgroup coordinates. In classical cases there are preferred reduced factorizations of the longest Weyl group elements, and conjecturally in these cases there …
Diaconis and Isaacs define a supercharacter theory for algebra groups over a finite field by constructing certain unions of conjugacy classes called superclasses and certain reducible characters called supercharacters. This work investigates the properties of algebra subgroups $H\subset G$ which are unions of some set of the superclasses of $G$; we call such subgroups supernormal. After giving a few useful equivalent formulations of this definition, we show that products of supernormal subgroups are supernormal and that all normal pattern subgroups are supernormal. We then classify the set of …
Using Goursat's lemma for groups, a simple representation and the invariant factor decompositions of the subgroups of the group Z_m x Z_n are deduced, where m and n are arbitrary positive integers. As consequences, explicit formulas for the total number of subgroups, the number of subgroups with a given invariant factor decomposition, and the number of subgroups of a given order are obtained.
