We describe a recent, one-parameter family of characterizations of Sobolev and BV functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$, using sizes of superlevel sets of suitable difference quotients. This provides an alternative point of view to the BBM formula by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu, and complements in the case of BV some results of Cohen, Dahmen, Daubechies and DeVore about the sizes of wavelet coefficients of such functions. An application towards Gagliardo-Nirenberg interpolation inequalities is then given. We also establish a related one-parameter family of formulae for the $L^p$ norm of functions in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
We give a new proof of the almost sharp Moser-Trudinger inequality on compact Riemannian manifolds based on the sharp Moser inequality on Euclidean spaces. In particular we can lower the smoothness requirement of the metric and apply the same approach to higher order Sobolev spaces and manifolds with boundary under several boundary conditions.
In this article we generalize the classical Sobolev's and Sobolev's trace inequalities on the Grand Lebesgue Spaces instead the classical Lebesgue Spaces. We will distinguish the classical Sobolev's inequality and the so-called trace Sobolev's inequality. We consider for simplicity only the case of whole space.
In this article, the authors introduce the Newton-Morrey-Sobolev space on a metric measure space $(\mathscr{X},d,μ)$. The embedding of the Newton-Morrey-Sobolev space into the Hölder space is obtained if $\mathscr{X}$ supports a weak Poincaré inequality and the measure $μ$ is doubling and satisfies a lower bounded condition. Moreover, in the Ahlfors $Q$-regular case, a Rellich-Kondrachov type embedding theorem is also obtained. Using the Hajłasz gradient, the authors also introduce the Hajłasz-Morrey-Sobolev spaces, and prove that the Newton-Morrey-Sobolev space coincides with the Hajłasz-Morr…
The purpose of this work is to describe an abstract theory of Hardy-Sobolev spaces on doubling Riemannian manifolds via an atomic decomposition. We study the real interpolation of these spaces with Sobolev spaces and finally give applications to Riesz inequalities.
We show that in a bounded simply connected planar domain $Ω$ the smooth Sobolev functions $W^{k,\infty}(Ω)\cap C^\infty(Ω)$ are dense in the homogeneous Sobolev spaces $L^{k,p}(Ω)$.
We show the density of smooth Sobolev functions $W^{k,\infty}(Ω)\cap C^\infty(Ω)$ in the Orlicz-Sobolev spaces $L^{k,Ψ}(Ω)$ for bounded simply connected planar domains $Ω$ and doubling Young functions $Ψ$.
The embedding relations between Besov-Triebel-Sobolev spaces and modulation spaces are determined explicitly. We extend the results of Sugimoto[2007]; Wang[2007] and Kobayashi[2011] to the most general cases. And we give the sharp embedding between Fourier $L^{p}$ spaces and modulation spaces.
We show that in a bounded Gromov hyperbolic domain $Ω$ smooth functions with bounded derivatives $C^\infty(Ω)\cap W^{k,\infty}(Ω)$ are dense in the homogeneous Sobolev spaces $L^{k,p}(Ω)$.
We consider the weighted Sobolev spaces associated with non-isotropic dilations of Calderón-Torchinsky and characterize the spaces by the square functions of Marcinkiewicz type including those defined with repeated uses of averaging operation.
Let (X, \r{ho},μ) be a space of homogeneous type, a variable exponent satisfying the globally log-Holder continuous condition. In this article, the author introduce the variable fractional Sobolev spaces on X via Hajłasz gradient. Using various maximal functions, several characterizations of this space are established.
We prove embeddings of Sobolev and Hardy-Sobolev spaces into Besov spaces built upon certain mixed norms. This gives an improvment of the known embeddings into usual Besov spaces. Applying these results, we obtain Oberlin type estimates of Fourier transforms for functions in Sobolev spaces $W_1^1(\mathbb R^n).$
In this paper, we discuss the trace operator for homogeneous fractional Sobolev spaces over infinite strip-like domains. We determine intrinsic seminorms on the trace space that allow for a bounded right inverse. The intrinsic seminorm includes two features previously used to describe the trace of homogeneous Sobolev spaces, a relation between the two disconnected components of the trace and the screened Sobolev seminorm. However, unlike its homogeneous Sobolev space equivalent, fractional Sobolev spaces require a far screened Sobolev seminorm that captures the non-local properties of fraction…
In this article, the authors establish a new characterization of the Musielak--Orlicz--Sobolev space on $\mathbb{R}^n$, which includes the classical Orlicz--Sobolev space, the weighted Sobolev space and the variable exponent Sobolev space as special cases, in terms of sharp ball averaging functions. Even in a special case, namely, the variable exponent Sobolev space, the obtained result in this article improves the corresponding result obtained by P. Hästö and A. M. Ribeiro [Commun. Contemp. Math. 19 (2017), 1650022, 13 pp] via weakening the assumption $f\in L^1(\mathbb R^n)$ into $f\in L_{\ma…
Let $Γ$ be a graph. Under suitable geometric assumptions on $Γ$, we give several equivalent characterizations of Sobolev and Hardy-Sobolev spaces on $Γ$, in terms of maximal functionals, Hajł asz type functionals or atomic decompositions. As an application, we study the boundedness of Riesz transforms on Hardy spaces on $Γ$. This gives the discrete counterpart of the corresponding results on Riemannian manifolds.
Let $n, m, k$ be positive integers with $k=n-m+1$. We establish an abstract Morse-Sard-type theorem which allows us to deduce, on the one hand, a previous result of De Pascale's for Sobolev $W^{k,p}_{\textrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m)$ functions with $p>n$ and, on the other hand, also the following new result: if $f\in C^{k-1}(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m)$ satisfies $$\limsup_{h\to 0}\frac{|D^{k-1}f(x+h)-D^{k-1}f(x)|}{|h|}<\infty$$ for every $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$ (that is, $D^{k-1}f$ is a Stepanov function), then the set of critical values of $f$ is Lebesgue-null in $\mathbb{R}^m$. In the c…
We define and study Sobolev spaces associated with Jacobi expansions. We prove that these Sobolev spaces are isomorphic to Jacobi potential spaces. As a technical tool, we also show some approximation properties of Poisson-Jacobi integrals.
For every system $\{ p_n(z) \}_{n=0}^\infty$ of OPRL or OPUC, we construct Sobolev orthogonal polynomials $y_n(z)$, with explicit integral representations involving $p_n$. Two concrete families of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials (depending on an arbitrary number of complex parameters) which are generalized eigenvalues of a difference operator (in $n$) and generalized eigenvalues of a differential operator (in $n$) are given. Applications of a general connection between Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and orthogonal systems of functions in the direct sum of scalar $L^2_μ$ spaces are discussed.
Our main purpose is to establish Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequalities using fractional homogeneous Sobolev spaces, and homogeneous Besov spaces. In particular, we extend some of the results obtained by the authors in [1, 2, 3, 7, 16, 21].
We characterize the real interpolation space between a weighted $L^p$ space and a weighted Sobolev space in arbitrary bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with weights that are positive powers of the distance to the boundary.
In this paper, we present some implicit function theorems for set-valued mappings between Fréchet spaces. The proof relies on Lebesgue's Dominated Convergence Theorem and on Ekeland's variational principle. An application to the existence of solutions of differential equations in Fréchet spaces with non-smooth data is given.
The aim of this paper is to provide Markov-type inequalities in the setting of weighted Sobolev spaces when the considered weights are generalized classical weights. Also, as results of independent interest, some basic facts about Sobolev spaces with respect to certain vector measures are stated.
We apply a symmetrization procedure to the setting of Jacobi expansions and study potential spaces in the resulting situation. We prove that the potential spaces of integer orders are isomorphic to suitably defined Sobolev spaces. Among further results, we obtain a fractional square function characterization, structural theorems and Sobolev type embedding theorems for these potential spaces.
We study Γ-convergence of nonconvex variational integrals of the calculus of variations in the setting of Cheeger-Sobolev spaces. Applications to relaxation and homogenization are given.
We obtain improved fractional Poincaré and Sobolev Poincaré inequalities including powers of the distance to the boundary in John, $s$-John domains and Hölder-$α$ domains, and discuss their optimality.
We give a discrete characterization of the trace of a class of Sobolev spaces on the Sierpinski gasket to the bottom line. This includes the L2 domain of the Laplacian as a special case. In addition, for Sobolev spaces of low orders, including the domain of the Dirichlet form, the trace spaces are Besov spaces on the line.
We study a family of fractional integral operator defined on an homogeneous space with a "rectangle doubling" measure. As a result, we give an extension of the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev theorem to a multi-parameter setting.
In this paper we study some properties of anisotropic Orlicz and anisotropic Orlicz-Sobolev spaces of vector valued functions for a special class of G-functions. We introduce a variational setting for a class of Lagrangian Systems. We give conditions which ensure that the principal part of variational functional is finitely defined and continuously differentiable on Orlicz-Sobolev space.
We study the Lp-properties of positive Rockland operators and define Sobolev spaces on general graded groups. This generalises the case of sub-Laplacians on stratified groups studied by G. Folland in [3]. We show that the defined Sobolev spaces are actually independent of the choice of a positive Rockland operator. Furthermore, we show that they are interpolation spaces and establish duality and Sobolev embedding theorems in this context.
By using, among other things, the Fourier analysis techniques on hyperbolic and symmetric spaces, we establish the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequalities for higher order derivatives on half spaces. The proof relies on a Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality on hyperbolic spaces which is of its independent interest. We also give an alternative proof of Benguria, Frank and Loss' work concerning the sharp constant in the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality in the three dimensional upper half space. Finally, we show the sharp constant in the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality for bi-Laplacian in the upper half…
