We analyse the long time tails of a charged quantum Brownian particle in a harmonic potential in the presence of a magnetic field using the Quantum Langevin Equation as a starting point. We analyse the long time tails in the position autocorrelation function, position-velocity correlation function and velocity autocorrelation function. We study these correlations for a Brownian particle coupled to the Ohmic and Drude baths, via position coordinate coupling. At finite temperatures we notice a crossover from a power-law to an exponentially decaying behaviour around the thermal time scale \frac{\hbar}{K_B T} . We analyse how the appearance of the cyclotron frequency in our study of a charged quantum Brownian particle affects the behaviour of the long time tails and contrast it with the case of a neutral quantum Brownian particle.
We derive explicit forms of Markovian transition probability densities for the velocity space and phase-space Brownian motion of a charged particle in a constant magnetic field.
We study the Quantum Brownian motion of a charged particle moving in a harmonic potential in the presence of an uniform external magnetic field and linearly coupled to an Ohmic bath through momentum variables. We analyse the growth of the mean square displacement of the particle in the classical high temperature domain and in the quantum low temperature domain dominated by zero point fluctuations. We also analyse the Position Response Function and the long time tails of various correlation functions. We notice some distinctive features, different from the usual case of a charged quantum Browni…
We study a charged Brownian gas with a non uniform bath temperature, and present a thermohydrodynamical picture. Expansion on the collision time probes the validity of the local equilibrium approach and the relevant thermodynamical variables. For the linear regime we present several applications (including some novel results). For the lowest nonlinear expansion and uniform bath temperature we compute the gradient corrections to the local equilibrium approach and the fundamental (Smoluchowsky) equation for the nonequilibrium particle density.
There is a growing interest in the stochastic processes of nonequilibrium systems subject to non-conserved forces, such as the magnetic forces acting on charged particles and the chiral self-propelled force acting on active particles. In this paper, we consider the stationary transport of non-interacting Brownian particles under a constant magnetic field in a position-dependent temperature background. We demonstrate the existence of the Nernst-like stationary density current perpendicular to both the temperature gradient and magnetic field, induced by the intricate coupling between the non-con…
We consider a charged Brownian gas under the influence of external and non uniform electric, magnetic and mechanical fields, immersed in a non uniform bath temperature. With the collision time as an expansion parameter, we study the solution to the associated Kramers equation, including a linear reactive term. To first order we obtain the asymptotic (overdamped) regime, governed by transport equations, namely: for the particle's density, a Smoluchowski-reactive like equation; for the particle's momentum density, a generalized Ohm's like equation; and for the particle's energy density, a Maxwel…
We give an exact solution to the generalized Langevin equation of motion of a charged Brownian particle in a uniform magnetic field that is driven internally by an exponentially-correlated stochastic force. A strong dissipation regime is described in which the ensemble-averaged fluctuations of the velocity exhibit transient oscillations that arise from memory effects. Also, we calculate generalized diffusion coefficients describing the transport of these particles and briefly discuss how they are affected by the magnetic field strength and correlation time. Our asymptotic results are extended …
The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is a central theorem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics by which the evolution of velocity fluctuations of the Brownian particle under a fluctuating environment is intimately related to its dissipative behavior. This can be illuminated in particular by an example of Brownian motion in an ohmic environment where the dissipative effect can be accounted for by the first-order time derivative of the position. Here we explore the dynamics of the Brownian particle coupled to a supraohmic environment by considering the motion of a charged particle interacting …
For stationary interface growth, governed by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in 1 + 1 dimensions, typical fluctuations of the interface height at long times are described by the Baik-Rains distribution. Recently Chhita et al. [1] used the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) to study the height fluctuations in systems of the KPZ universality class for Brownian interfaces with arbitrary diffusion constant. They showed that there is a one-parameter family of long-time distributions, parametrized by the diffusion constant of the initial random height profile. They also compu…
We derive explicit forms of Markovian transition probability densities for the velocity space, phase-space and the Smoluchowski configuration-space Brownian motion of a charged particle in a constant magnetic field. By invoking a hydrodynamical formalism for those stochastic processes, we quantify a continual (net on the local average) heat transfer from the thermostat to diffusing particles.
We study the Brownian motion of a charged colloid, confined between two charged walls, for small separation between the colloid and the walls. The system is embedded in an ionic solution. The combined effect of electrostatic repulsion and reduced diffusion due to hydrodynamic forces results in a specific motion in the direction perpendicular to the confining walls. The apparent diffusion coefficient at short times as well as the diffusion characteristic time are shown to follow a sigmoid curve as function of a dimensionless parameter. This parameter depends on the electrostatic properties and …
We study the dynamics of a Brownian motion with a diffusion coefficient which evolves stochastically. We first study this process in arbitrary dimensions and find the scaling form and the corresponding scaling function of the position distribution. We find that the tails of the distribution have exponential tails with a ballistic scaling. We then introduce the resetting dynamics where, at a constant rate, both the position and the diffusion coefficient are reset to zero. This eventually leads to a nonequilibrium stationary state, which we study in arbitrary dimensions. In stark contrast to ord…
We consider a charged Brownian gas under the influence of external, static and uniform electric and magnetic fields, immersed in a uniform bath temperature. We obtain the solution for the associated Langevin equation, and thereafter the evolution of the nonequilibrium temperature towards a nonequilibrium (hot) steady state. We apply our results to a simple yet relevant Brownian model for carrier transport in GaAs. We obtain a negative differential conductivity regime (Gunn effect) and discuss and compare our results with experimental results.
We study the motion of charged Brownian particles in an external magnetic field. It is found that a correlation appears between the components of particle velocity in the case of anisotropic friction, approaching asymptotically zero in the stationary limit. If magnetic field is smaller compared to the critical value, determined by frictional anisotropy, the relaxation of the correlation is non-oscillating in time. However, in a larger magnetic field this relaxation becomes oscillating. The phenomenon is related to the statistical dependence of the components of transformed random force caused …
We study the dynamics of a trapped, charged Brownian particle in presence of a time dependent magnetic field. We calculate work distributions for different time dependent protocols. In our problem thermodynamic work is related to variation of vector potential with time as opposed to the earlier studies where the work is related to time variation of the potentials which depends only on the coordinates of the particle. Using Jarzynski identity and Crook's equality we show that the free energy of the particle is independent of the magnetic field, thus complementing the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem. W…
Langevin equation pertinent to diffusion limited aggregation of charged particles in the presence of an external magnetic field is solved exactly. The solution involves correlated random variables. A new scheme for exactly sampling the components of the position and velocity is proposed.
We study the distribution of first-passage functionals ${\cal A}= \int_0^{t_f} x^n(t)\, dt$, where $x(t)$ is a Brownian motion (with or without drift) with diffusion constant $D$, starting at $x_0>0$, and $t_f$ is the first-passage time to the origin. In the driftless case, we compute exactly, for all $n>-2$, the probability density $P_n(A|x_0)=\text{Prob}.(\mathcal{A}=A)$. This probability density has an essential singular tail as $A\to 0$ and a power-law tail $\sim A^{-(n+3)/(n+2)}$ as $A\to \infty$. The former is reproduced by the optimal fluctuation method (OFM), which also predicts the op…
The probability per unit time for a thermally activated Brownian particle to escape over a potential well is in general well-described by Kramers theory. Kramers showed that the escape time decreases exponentially with increasing barrier height. The dynamics slow down when the particle is charged and subjected to a Lorentz force due to an external magnetic field. This is evident via a rescaling of the diffusion coefficient entering as a prefactor in the Kramers escape rate without any impact on the barrier-height-dependent exponent. Here we show that the barrier height can be effectively chang…
We provide an analytic solution to the first-passage time (FPT) problem of a piecewise-smooth stochastic model, namely Brownian motion with dry friction, using two different but closely related approaches which are based on eigenfunction decompositions on the one hand and on the backward Kolmogorov equation on the other. For the simple case containing only dry friction, a phase transition phenomenon in the spectrum is found which relates to the position of the exit point, and which affects the tail of the FPT distribution. For the model containing as well a driving force and viscous friction t…
Single-file diffusion behaves as normal diffusion at small time and as anomalous subdiffusion at large time. These properties can be described by fractional Brownian motion with variable Hurst exponent or multifractional Brownian motion. We introduce a new stochastic process called Riemann-Liouville step fractional Brownian motion which can be regarded as a special case of multifractional Brownian motion with step function type of Hurst exponent tailored for single-file diffusion. Such a step fractional Brownian motion can be obtained as solution of fractional Langevin equation with zero dampi…

We analyze the annihilation of equally-charged particles based on the Brownian motion model built by F. Dyson for $N$ particles with charge $q$ interacting via the log-Coulomb potential on the unitary circle at a reduced inverse temperature $β$, defined as $β=q^2/(k_B T)$. We derive an analytical approach in order to describe the large-$t$ asymptotic behaviour for the number density decay, which can be described as a power law, i.e., $n\sim t^{-ν}$. For a sufficiently large $β$, the power law exponent $ν$ behaves as $(β+1)^{-1}$, which was corroborated through several computational simulations…
Nonergodic Brownian motion is elucidated within the framework of the generalized Langevin equation. For thermal noise yielding either a vanishing or a divergent zero-frequency friction strength, the non-Markovian Browninan dynamics exhibits a riveting, anomalous diffusion behavior being characterized by a ballistic or possibly also a localized dynamics. As a consequence, such tailored thermal noise may cause a net acceleration of directed transport in a rocking Brownian motor. Two notable conditions for the thermal noise are identified in order to guarantee the fluctuation-dissipation theorem …
Basing on main principles of statistical mechanics only, an exact virial expansion for path probability distribution of molecular Brownian particle in a fluid is derived which connects response of the distribution to perturbations of the fluid and statistical correlations of its molecules with Brownian particle. The expansion implies that (i) spatial spread of these correlations is finite, (ii) this is inconsistent with Gaussian distribution involved by the ``molecular chaos'' hypothesis, and (iii) real path distribution possesses power-law long tails. This means that actual Brownian path neve…
We report on novel Brownian, yet non-Gaussian diffusion, in which the mean square displacement of the particle grows linearly with time, the probability density for the particle spreading is Gaussian-like, however, the probability density for its position increments possesses an exponentially decaying tail. In contrast to recent works in this area, this behaviour is not a consequence of either a space or time-dependent diffusivity, but is induced by external non-thermal noise acting on the particle dwelling in a periodic potential. The existence of the exponential tail in the increment statist…
The Brownian motion of a charged particle with finite size (described by Sommerfeld model) is considered. It is found out that due to radiation reaction: (1) the effective temperature of such particle is lower, and (2) the acceleration of the average velocity is smaller, than that for classical Brown particle without electric charge.
Consider a generic triangle in the upper half of the complex plane with one side on the real line. This paper presents a tailored construction of a discrete random walk whose continuum limit is a Brownian motion in the triangle, reflected instantaneously on the left and right sides with constant reflection angles. Starting from the top of the triangle, it is evident from the construction that the reflected Brownian motion lands with the uniform distribution on the base. Combined with conformal invariance and the locality property, this uniform exit distribution allows us to compute distributio…

We study the probability distribution, $P_N(T)$, of the coincidence time $T$, i.e. the total local time of all pairwise coincidences of $N$ independent Brownian walkers. We consider in details two geometries: Brownian motions all starting from $0$, and Brownian bridges. Using a Feynman-Kac representation for the moment generating function of this coincidence time, we map this problem onto some observables in three related models (i) the propagator of the Lieb Liniger model of quantum particles with pairwise delta function interactions (ii) the moments of the partition function of a directed po…
We investigate the Brownian motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field. We study this in the high temperature classical and low temperature quantum domains. In both domains, we observe a transition of the mean square displacement from a monotonic behaviour to a damped oscillatory behaviour as one increases the strength of the magnetic field. When the strength of the magnetic field is negligible, the mean square displacement grows linearly with time in the classical domain and logarithmically with time in the quantum domain. We notice that these features of the mean square displacement ar…
Thermally activated escape of a Brownian particle over a potential barrier is well understood within Kramers theory. When subjected to an external magnetic field, the Lorentz force slows down the escape dynamics via a rescaling of the diffusion coefficient without affecting the exponential dependence on the barrier height. Here, we study the escape dynamics of a charged Brownian particle from a two-dimensional truncated harmonic potential under the influence of Lorentz force due to an external magnetic field. The particle is driven anisotropically by subjecting it to noises with different stre…
With this work we investigate an often neglected aspect of Brownian motor transport: The rôle of fluctuations of the noise-induced current and its consequences for the efficiency of rectifying noise. In doing so, we consider a Brownian inertial motor that is driven by an unbiased monochromatic, time-periodic force and thermal noise. Typically, we find that the asymptotic, time- and noise-averaged transport velocities are small, possessing rather broad velocity fluctuations. This implies a corresponding poor performance for the rectification power. However, for tailored profiles of the ratchet …
A reversal of the particle current in rocking Brownian motors was predicted more than 20 years ago; however, an experimental verification and a deeper insight into the underlying mechanisms remained elusive. Here, we investigate the high frequency behaviour of a rocking Brownian motor for charged nanoparticles based on electrostatic interactions in a 3D shaped nanofluidic slit and electro-osmotic forcing of the particles. A sub ms temporal and $\approx\,10\,$nm spatial resolution of the 60 nm gold spheres allows us to measure the time-resolved and frequency dependent evolution of the particle …
In systems with overdamped dynamics, the Lorentz force reduces the diffusivity of a Brownian particle in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The anisotropy in diffusion implies that the Fokker-Planck equation for the probabiliy distribution of the particle acquires a tensorial coefficient. The tensor, however, is not a typical diffusion tensor due to the antisymmetric elements which account for the fact that Lorentz force curves the trajectory of a moving charged particle. This gives rise to unusual dynamics with features such as additional Lorentz fluxes and a nontrivial density di…
Statistics of molecular random walks in a fluid is considered with the help of Bogolyubov equation for generating functional of distribution functions. An invariance group of this equation is found. It results in many exact relations between path probability distribution of a test particle and its correlations with the fluid. As the consequence, significant restrictions on possible shape of the path distribution do arise. In particular, the hypothetical Gaussian form of long-range asymptotic proves to be forbidden, even (and first of all) under the Boltzmann-Grad limit. An allowed diffusive as…
A Brownian particle performs gyrating motion around a potential energy minimum when subjected to thermal noises from two different heat baths. Here, we propose a magneto-gyrator made of a single charged Brownian particle that is steered by an external magnetic field. Key properties, such as the direction of gyration, the torque exerted by the engine on the confining potential and the maximum power delivered by the microengine can be tuned by varying the strength and direction of the applied magnetic field. Further tunability is obtained by rotating the potential in the plane perpendicular to t…
We investigate the impact of hydrodynamic fluctuations on correlation functions in a scale invariant fluid with a conserved $U(1)$ charge. The kinetic equations for the two-point functions of pressure, momentum and heat energy densities are derived within the framework of stochastic hydrodynamics. The leading non-analytic contributions to the energy-momentum tensor as well as the $U(1)$ current are determined from the solutions to these kinetic equations. In the case of a static homogeneous background we show that the long time tails obtained from hydro-kinetic equations reproduce the one-loop…
We show that for particles performing Brownian motion in a frozen array of scatterers long-time correlations emerge in the mean-square displacement. Defining the velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) via the second time-derivative of the mean-square displacement, power-law tails govern the long-time dynamics similar to the case of ballistic motion. The physical origin of the persistent memory is due to repeated encounters with the same obstacle which occurs naturally in Brownian dynamics without involving other scattering centers. This observation suggests that in this case the VACF exhibit…
We characterize throughout the spectral range of an optical trap the nature of the noise at play and the ergodic properties of the corresponding Brownian motion of an overdamped trapped single microsphere, comparing experimental, analytical and simulated data. We carefully analyze noise and ergodic properties $(i)$ using the Allan variance for characterizing the noise and $(ii)$ exploiting a test of ergodicity tailored for experiments done over finite times. We derive these two observables in the low-frequency Ornstein-Uhlenbeck trapped-diffusion regime and study analytically their evolution t…
We present a numerical scheme for simulating the dynamics of Brownian particles suspended in a fluid. The motion of the particles is tracked by the Langevin equation, whereas the host fluid flow is analyzed by using the lattice Boltzmann method. The friction force between a particle and the fluid is evaluated correctly based on the velocity difference at the position of the particle. The coupling method accurately reproduces the long-time tail observed in the velocity auto-correlation function. We also show that the fluctuation-dissipation relation holds between the relaxation of a single part…
We study the impact on shape parameters of an underlying Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process (height, width and first hitting time), of having a non-spatial branching mechanism with infinite variance. Aiming at providing a comparative study of the spread of an epidemics whose dynamics is given by the modulus of a branching Brownian motion (BBM) we then consider spatial branching processes in dimension d, not necessarily integer. The underlying branching mechanism is then either a binary branching model or one presenting infinite variance. In particular we evaluate the chance p(x) of being…
Last year in [Phys. Rev. E 102, 042121 (2020)] the authors studied an overdamped dynamics of nonequilibrium noise driven Brownian particle dwelling in a spatially periodic potential and discovered a novel class of Brownian, yet non-Gaussian diffusion. The mean square displacement of the particle grows linearly with time and the probability density for the particle position is Gaussian, however, the corresponding distribution for the increments is non-Gaussian. The latter property induces the colossal enhancement of diffusion, significantly exceeding the well known effect of giant diffusion. He…
We discuss the eigenvalue detachment transition in terms of scaling of fluctuations in ensembles of paths located near convex boundaries of various physical nature. We consider numerically the BBP-like (Baik-Ben Arous-Péché) transition from the Gaussian to the Tracy-Widom scaling of fluctuations in several statistical systems for both canonical and microcanonical ensembles and identify the corresponding control parameter in each case. In particular, for fixed path length (microcanonical) ensemble of paths located in the vicinity of a partially permeable semicircle, the transition occurs at the…
We study analytically the order and gap statistics of particles at time $t$ for the one dimensional branching Brownian motion, conditioned to have a fixed number of particles at $t$. The dynamics of the process proceeds in continuous time where at each time step, every particle in the system either diffuses (with diffusion constant $D$), dies (with rate $d$) or splits into two independent particles (with rate $b$). We derive exact results for the probability distribution function of $g_k(t) = x_k(t) - x_{k+1}(t)$, the distance between successive particles, conditioned on the event that there a…
