Whether there exist finite time blow-up solutions for the 2-D Boussinesq and the 3-D Euler equations are of fundamental importance to the field of fluid mechanics. We develop a new numerical framework, employing physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), that discover, for the first time, a smooth self-similar blow-up profile for both equations. The solution itself could form the basis of a future computer-assisted proof of blow-up for both equations. In addition, we demonstrate PINNs could be successfully applied to find unstable self-similar solutions to fluid equations by constructing the first example of an unstable self-similar solution to the Córdoba-Córdoba-Fontelos equation. We show that our numerical framework is both robust and adaptable to various other equations.

In this paper we study the finite time blow-up problem for the axisymmetric 3D incompressible Euler equations with swirl. The evolution equations for the deformation tensor and the vorticity are reduced considerably in this case. Under the assumption of local minima for the pressure on the axis of symmetry with respect to the radial variations we show that the solution blows-up in finite time. If we further assume that the second radial derivative vanishes on the axis, then system reduces to the form of Constantin-Lax-Majda equations, and can be integrated explicitly.
The dynamics along the particle trajectories for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations in an infinite cylinder are considered. It is shown that if the inflow-outflow is rapidly increasing in time, the corresponding laminar profile of the Euler flow is not (in some sense) stable provided that the swirling component is not small. This exhibits an instability mechanism of pulsatile flow. In the proof, Frenet-Serret formulas and orthonormal moving frame are essentially used.
In connection with the recent proposal for possible singularity formation at the boundary for solutions of 3d axi-symmetric incompressible Euler's equations (Luo and Hou, 2013), we study models for the dynamics at the boundary and show that they exhibit a finite-time blow-up from smooth data.
In this paper we prove the global well-posedness for the three-dimensional Euler-Boussinesq system with axisymmetric initial data without swirl. This system couples the Euler equation with a transport-diffusion equation governing the temperature.
Consider axisymmetric strong solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^3$ with non-trivial swirl. Such solutions are not known to be globally defined, but it is shown in \cite{MR673830} that they could only blow up on the axis of symmetry. Let $z$ denote the axis of symmetry and $r$ measure the distance to the z-axis. Suppose the solution satisfies the pointwise scale invariant bound $|v (x,t)| \le C_*{(r^2 -t)^{-1/2}} $ for $-T_0\le t < 0$ and $0<C_*<\infty$ allowed to be large, we then prove that $v$ is regular at time zero.
Consider axisymmetric strong solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^3$ with non-trivial swirl. Let $z$ denote the axis of symmetry and $r$ measure the distance to the z-axis. Suppose the solution satisfies either $|v (x,t)| \le C_*{|t|^{-1/2}} $ or, for some $\e > 0$, $|v (x,t)| \le C_* r^{-1+ε} |t|^{-ε/2}$ for $-T_0\le t < 0$ and $0<C_*<\infty$ allowed to be large. We prove that $v$ is regular at time zero.
The dynamics along the particle trajectories for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations are considered. It is shown that if the inflow is rapidly increasing (pushy) in time, the corresponding laminar profile of the incompressible Euler flow is not (in some sense) stable provided that the swirling component is not zero. It is also shown that if the vorticity on the axis is not zero (with some extra assumptions), then there is no steady flow. We can rephrase these instability to an instantaneous blow-up. In the proof, Frenet-Serret formulas and orthonormal moving frame are essentially used.
The dynamics along the particle trajectories for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations in an infinite cylinder are considered. It is shown that if the inflow-outflow is highly oscillating in time, the corresponding Euler flow cannot keep the uniformly smooth laminar profile provided that the swirling component is not zero. In the proof, Frenet-Serret formulas and orthonormal moving frame are essentially used.
The question of the global regularity vs finite time blow up in solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equation is a major open problem of modern applied analysis. In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional models of the axisymmetric hyperbolic boundary blow up scenario for the 3D Euler equation proposed by Hou and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations. These models generalize the 1D Hou-Luo model suggested in Hou & Luo's paper, for which finite time blow up has been established in the paper by Kyudong Choi, Thomas Y. Hou, Alexander Kiselev, Guo Luo, Vladimir Sverak, Yao Yao. …
We study the stability of recently constructed self-similar blow-up solutions to the incompressible Euler equation. A consequence of our work is the existence of finite-energy $C^{1,α}$ solutions that become singular in finite time in a locally self-similar manner. As a corollary, we also observe that the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion cannot be improved in the class of $C^{1,α}$ solutions.
In this article we will introduce a new model to describe the leading order behavior of an ideal and axisymmetric fluid moving in a very narrow domain. After providing a formal derivation of the model, we will prove the well-posedness and provide a rigorous mathematical justification for the formal derivation under a new sign condition. Finally, a blowup result regarding this model will be discussed as well.
We establish the stability of 3-D axisymmetric transonic shock solutions of the steady full Euler system in divergent nozzles under small perturbations of an incoming radial supersonic flow and a constant pressure at the exit of the nozzles. To study 3-D axisymmetric transonic shock solutions of the full Euler system, we use a stream function formulation of the full Euler system for a 3-D axisymmetric flow. We resolve the singularity issue arising in stream function formulations of the full Euler system for a 3-D axisymmetric flow. We develop a new scheme to determine a shock location of a tra…
This paper construct a family of explicit self-similar blowup axisymmetric solutions for the 3D incompressible Euler equations in R^3. Those singular solutions admit infinite energy.
We investigate the self-similar singularity of a 1D model for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations, which is motivated by a particular singularity formation scenario observed in numerical computation. We prove the existence of a discrete family of self-similar profiles for this model and analyze their far-field properties. The self-similar profiles we find agree with direct simulation of the model and seem to have some stability.
This paper deals with the global well-posedness of the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations for initial data lying in critical Besov spaces $B_{p,1}^{1+3/p}$. In this case the BKM criterion is not known to be valid and to circumvent this difficulty we use a new decomposition of the vorticity.
We exclude Type I blow-up, which occurs in the form of atomic concentrations of the $L^2$ norm for the solution of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. As a corollary we prove nonexistence of discretely self-similar blow-up in the energy conserving scale.
We construct stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Euler-Poisson equations, which govern the internal structure of polytropic gaseous stars, with small constant angular velocity when the adiabatic exponent $γ$ belongs to $(\frac65,\frac32]$. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear integral equation, and is solved by iteration technique. By this method, not only we get the existence, but also we clarify properties of the solutions such as the physical vacuum condition and oblateness of the star surface.
We partially answer a question raised by Kiselev and Zlatos in \cite{MR2180809}; in the generalized dyadic model of the Euler equation, a blow-up of $H^{1/3+δ}$-norm occurs. We recover a few previous blow-up results for various related dyadic models as corollaries.
In recent works we have constructed axisymmetric solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations which give mathematical models of slowly uniformly rotating gaseous stars. We try to extend this result to the study of solutions of the Einstein-Euler equations in the framework of the general theory of relativity. Although many interesting studies have been done about axisymmetric metric in the general theory of relativity, they are restricted to the region of the vacuum. Mathematically rigorous existence theorem of the axisymmetric interior solutions of the stationary metric corresponding to the energy…
A second-order PDE is derived from Euler's equaitons under certain assumptions. It is shown that this PDE admits shock and rarefaction waves, and that a single point gradient blow-up admits a unique similarity extension after blow-up that settles uniqueness/entropy issues for such equations.
We study behaviors of scalar quantities near the possible blow-up time, which is made of smooth solutions of the Euler equations, Navier-Stokes equations and the surface quasi-geostrophic equations. Integrating the dynamical equations of the scaling invariant norms, we derive the possible blow-up behaviors of the above quantities, from which we obtain new type of blow-up criteria and some necessary conditions for the blow-up.
We address the structural stability of 3-D axisymmetric subsonic flows with nonzero swirl for the steady compressible Euler-Poisson system in a cylinder supplemented with non small boundary data. A special Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field is introduced for 3-D axisymmetric flow with a nonzero swirl(=angular momentum density) component. With the newly introduced decomposition, a quasilinear elliptic system of second order is derived from the elliptic modes in Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flows. Due to the nonzero swirl, the main difficulties lie in the solvability of a singula…
In this work, we study the behavior of blow-up solutions to the multidimensional restricted Euler--Poisson equations which are the localized version of the full Euler--Poisson system. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of finite-time blow-up solutions in terms of the initial data, and describe the asymptotic behavior of the solutions near blow up times. We also identify a rich set of the initial data which yields global bounded solutions.
2D inviscid Boussinesq equations and 3D axisymmetric Euler equations: (1) A unification ($Em$), (2) Finite-time blow-up of two unified $(1+1)$D systems rigorously derived from ($Em$)
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
We construct a class of global, dynamical solutions to the 3d Euler equations near the stationary state given by uniform "rigid body" rotation. These solutions are axisymmetric, of Sobolev regularity, have non-vanishing swirl and scatter linearly, thanks to the dispersive effect induced by the rotation. To establish this, we introduce a framework that builds on the symmetries of the problem and precisely captures the anisotropic, dispersive mechanism due to rotation. This enables a fine analysis of the geometry of nonlinear interactions and allows us to propagate sharp decay bounds, which is c…
We consider the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations without swirl on some bounded axial symmetric domains. In this setting, well-posedness is well known due to the essentially 2D geometry. The quantity $ω^θ/r$ plays the role of vorticity in 2D. First, we prove that the gradient of $ω^θ/r$ can grow at most double exponentially with improving a priori bound close to the axis of symmetry. Next, on the unit ball, we show that at the boundary, one can achieve double exponential growth of the gradient of $ω^θ/r$.
We prove the finite time blow-up for $C^1$ solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n\geq 1$, with/without background density for initial data satisfying suitable conditions. We also find a sufficient condition for the initial data such that $C^3$ solution breaks down in finite time for the compressible Euler equations for polytropic gas flows.
We give a vorticity-dynamical proof of $C^1\cap H^2$-illposedness of the 2D Euler equations. Our construction shows that the unique Yudovich solution escapes both $C^1$ and $H^2$ instantaneously.
We find a smooth solution of the 2D Euler equation on a bounded domain which exists and is unique in a natural class locally in time, but blows up in finite time in the sense of its vorticity losing continuity. The domain's boundary is smooth except at two points, which are interior cusps.
We improve the recent result of Chae & Tadmor in [Comm. Math. Sci. 6(3) (2008) 785-789], proving a one-sided threshold condition which leads to finite-time breakdown of the Euler-Poisson equations in arbitrary dimension n.

We study the interaction between the stability, and the propagation of regularity, for solutions to the incompressible 3D Euler equation. It is still unknown whether a solution with smooth initial data can develop a singularity in finite time. This article explains why the prediction of such a blow-up, via direct numerical experiments, is so difficult. It is described how, in such a scenario, the solution becomes unstable as time approaches the blow-up time.
This paper is devoted to the global existence and uniqueness results for the three-dimensional Boussinesq system with axisymmetric initial data $v^{0}{\in}B_{2,1}^{5/2}(\RR^3)$ and$ $ρ^{0}{\in}B_{2,1}^{1/2}(\RR^3)\cap L^{p}(\RR^3)$ with $p>6.$ This system couples the incompressible Euler equations with a transport-diffusion equation governing the density. In this case the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion is not known to be valid and to circumvent this difficulty we use in a crucial way some geometric properties of the vorticity.
We consider axisymmetric Euler flows without swirl in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with $d\geq 4$, for which the global regularity of smooth solutions is an open problem. When $d = 4$, we obtain global regularity under the assumption that the initial vorticity satisfies some decay at infinity and is vanishing at the axis. Assuming further that the initial vorticity is of one sign guarantees global regularity for $d\leq 7$.

In this paper we are interested in geometric aspects of blowup in the axisymmetric 3D Euler equations with swirl on a cylinder. Writing the equations in Lagrangian form for the flow derivative along either the axis or the boundary and imposing oddness on the vertical component of the flow, we extend some blowup criteria due to Chae, Constantin, and Wu related to assumptions on the sign of the pressure Hessian. In addition we give a geometric interpretation of the results, both in terms of the local geometry along trajectories and in terms of the Riemannian geometry of the volume-preserving dif…
We investigate the large time behavior of an axisymmetric model for the 3D Euler equations. In \cite{HL09}, Hou and Lei proposed a 3D model for the axisymmetric incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with swirl. This model shares many properties of the 3D incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The main difference between the 3D model of Hou and Lei and the reformulated 3D Euler and Navier-Stokes equations is that the convection term is neglected in the 3D model. In \cite{HSW09}, the authors proved that the 3D inviscid model can develop a finite time singularity starting fr…
In this paper we mainly investigate the initial value problem of the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations. We first present a new blow-up result to the system for a special class of smooth initial data by using the rotational invariant properties of the system. Then, we prove that the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations is ill-posed in critical Besov spaces by a contradiction argument. Finally, we verify the system possesses a class of peakon solutions in the sense of distributions.
The global existence of weak solutions for the three-dimensional axisymmetric Euler-$α$ (also known as Lagrangian-averaged Euler-$α$) equations, without swirl, is established, whenever the initial unfiltered velocity $v_0$ satisfies $\frac{\nabla \times v_0}{r}$ is a finite Randon measure with compact support. Furthermore, the global existence and uniqueness, is also established in this case provided $\frac{\nabla \times v_0}{r} \in L^p_c(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $p>{3/2}$. It is worth mention that no such results are known to be available, so far, for the three-dimensional Euler equations of ideal…
In this paper, we mainly investigate the tridimensional incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations without swirl in the whole space. Specifically, we prove the global existence of weak solutions if the swirl component of initial vorticity $w_0^θ$ satisfies that $\frac{w_0^θ}r\in L^1\cap L^p({\Bbb R}^3)$ for some $p>1$. To achieve this goal, we establish the $L_{\rm loc}^{2+α}({\Bbb R}^3)$ estimate of velocity fields for some $α>0$, which is innovative to the best of our knowledge. Our result extends previous work in the literature.
In this paper we derive kinematic relations for quantities involving the rate of strain tensor and the Hessian of the pressure for solutions of the 3D Euler equations and the 2D Boussinesq equations. Using these kinematic relations, we prove new blow up criteria and obtain conditions for the absence of type I singularity for these equations. We obtain both global and localized versions of the results. Some of the new blow up criteria and type I conditions improve previous results of [3].
This article is the continued version of the analytical blowup solutions for 2-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations \cite{Y1}. With extension of the blowup solutions with radial symmetry for the isothermal Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$, other special blowup solutions in $R^{2}$ with non-radial symmetry are constructed by the separation method. We notice that the results are the first evolutionary solutions with non-radial symmetry for the system. We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} es…
In this article, we study the blowup phenomena of compressible Euler equations with non-vacuum initial data. Our new results, which cover a general class of testing functions, present new initial value blowup conditions. The corresponding blowup results of the 1-dimensional case in non-radial symmetry are also included.
