We consider the uniqueness of equilibrium states for dynamical systems that satisfy certain weak, non-uniform versions of specification, expansivity, and the Bowen property at a fixed scale. Following Climenhaga-Thompson's approach which was originally due to Bowen and Franco, we prove that equilibrium states are unique even when the weak specification assumption only holds on a small collection of orbit segments.
In [2], Bowen showed that for an expansive system (X, T) with specification and a potential with the Bowen property, the equilibrium state is unique and fully supported. We generalize that result by showing that the same conclusion holds for non-uniform versions of Bowen's hypotheses in which constant parameters are replaced by any increasing unbounded functions f(n) and g(n) with sublogarithmic growth (in n). We prove results for two weakenings of specification; the first is non-uniform specification, based on a definition of Marcus in ([14]), and the second is a significantly weaker property…
Shift spaces with the specification property are intrinsically ergodic, i.e. they have a unique measure of maximal entropy. This can fail for shifts with the weaker almost specification property. We define a new property called one-sided almost specification, which lies in between specification and almost specification, and prove that it guarantees intrinsic ergodicity if the corresponding mistake function g is bounded. We also show that uniqueness may fail for unbounded g such as log log n. Our results have consequences for almost specification: we prove that almost specification with g=1 imp…
We consider a robust class of random non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials with small variation. For each element of this class we develop the Thermodynamical Formalism and prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states among non-uniformly expanding measures. Moreover, we show that these equilibrium states and the random topological pressure vary continuously in this setting.
In this note, we consider the thermodynamic formalism for Lorenz attractors of flows in any dimension. Under a mild condition on the Hölder continuous potential function $ϕ$, we prove that for an open and dense subset of $C^1$ vector fields, every Lorenz attractor supports a unique equilibrium state. In particular, we obtain the uniqueness for the measure of maximal entropy.
It is well-known that for expansive maps and continuous potential functions, the specification property (for the map) and the Bowen property (for the potential) together imply the existence of a unique equilibrium state. We consider symbolic spaces that may not have specification, and potentials that may not have the Bowen property, and give conditions under which uniqueness of the equilibrium state can still be deduced. Our approach is to ask that the collection of cylinders which are obstructions to the specification property or the Bowen property is small in an appropriate quantitative sens…
We show that for a $\mathbb{Z}^{l}$-action (or $(\N\cup\{0\})^l$-action) on a non-empty compact metrizable space $Ω$, the existence of a affine space dense in the set of continuous functions on $Ω$ constituted by elements admitting a unique equilibrium state implies that each invariant measure can be approximated weakly$^*$ and in entropy by a sequence of measures which are unique equilibrium states.
We prove that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits for any Hölder continuous potential $V$ at most one equilibrium state for $V$ among regular measures. We give a condition on $V$ which ensures that no singularity can be an equilibrium state. Thus, for these $V$'s, there exists a unique equilibrium state and it is a regular measure. Applying this for $V\equiv 0$, we show that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits a unique measure of maximal entropy.
For transitive shifts of finite type, and more generally for shifts with specification, it is well-known that every equilibrium state for a Holder continuous potential has positive entropy as long as the shift has positive topological entropy. We give a non-uniform specification condition under which this property continues to hold, and demonstrate that it does not necessarily hold for other non-uniform versions of specification that have been introduced elsewhere.
For strongly dissipative Hénon maps at the first bifurcation where the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we establish a thermodynamic formalism, i.e., prove the existence and uniqueness of an invariant probability measure which maximizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $t\in\mathbb R$ is in a certain large interval and $J^u$ is the Jacobian in the unstable direction. We obtain geometric and statistical properties of these measures.
We show that an arbitrary factor map $π:X \to Y$ on an irreducible subshift of finite type is a composition of a finite-to-one factor code and a class degree one factor code. Using this structure theorem on infinite-to-one factor codes, we then prove that any equilibrium state $ν$ on $Y$ for a potential function of sufficient regularity lifts to a unique measure of maximal relative entropy on $X$. This answers a question raised by Boyle and Petersen (for lifts of Markov measures) and generalizes the earlier known special case of finite-to-one factor codes.
Since seminal work of Bowen, it has been known that the specification property implies various useful properties about a topological dynamical system, among them uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy (often referred to as intrinsic ergodicity). Weakenings of the specification property called almost weak specification and almost specification have been defined and profitably applied in various works. However, it has been an open question whether either or both of these properties imply intrinsic ergodicity. We answer this question negatively by exhibiting examples of subshifts with multi…
We show that a shift space on a finite alphabet with a non-uniform specification property can be modeled by a strongly positive recurrent countable-state Markov shift to which every equilibrium state lifts. In addition to uniqueness of the equilibrium state, this gives strong statistical properties including the Bernoulli property, exponential decay of correlations, central limit theorem, and analyticity of pressure, which are new even for uniform specification. We give applications to shifts of quasi-finite type, synchronised and coded shifts, and factors of beta-shifts and S-gap shifts.
A classical result in thermodynamic formalism is that for uniformly hyperbolic systems, every Hölder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state. One proof of this fact is due to Rufus Bowen and uses the fact that such systems satisfy expansivity and specification properties. In these notes, we survey recent progress that uses generalizations of these properties to extend Bowen's arguments beyond uniform hyperbolicity, including applications to partially hyperbolic systems and geodesic flows beyond negative curvature. We include a new criterion for uniqueness of equilibrium states for …
We prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for a family of partially hyperbolic systems, with respect to Holder continuous potentials with small variation. The family comes from the projection, on the center-unstable direction, of a family of partially hyperbolic horseshoes introduced in [Díaz,L., Horita,V., Rios, I., Sambarino, M., Destroying horseshoes via heterodimensional cycles: generating bifurcations inside homoclinic classes, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, 2009]. For the original three dimensional system, we consider potentials with small variation, constant on loca…
We study geodesic flows over compact rank 1 manifolds and prove that sufficiently regular potential functions have unique equilibrium states if the singular set does not carry full pressure. In dimension 2, this proves uniqueness for scalar multiples of the geometric potential on the interval $(-\infty,1)$, which is optimal. In higher dimensions, we obtain the same result on a neighborhood of 0, and give examples where uniqueness holds on all of $\mathbb{R}$. For general potential functions $φ$, we prove that the pressure gap holds whenever $φ$ is locally constant on a neighborhood of the sing…
In this paper, we study perturbations of the $d$-dimensional Ising model for $d\geq 2$, including long range ones to which the Pirogov-Sinai theory is not applicable. We show that the uniqueness of the equilibrium state of the Ising model at high temperature and the coexistence of equilibrium states at low temperature are preserved by spin-flip symmetric perturbations.
We prove uniqueness of equilibrium states for subshifts corresponding to intermediate beta transformations with $β> 2$ having the property that the orbit of 0 is bounded away from 1.
For a finitely irreducible countable Markov shift and a potential with summable variations, we provide a condition on the associated pressure function which ensures that Bowen's Gibbs state, the equilibrium state, and the minimizer of the level-2 large deviations rate function are all unique and they coincide. From this, we deduce that all periodic points weighted with the potential equidistribute with respect to the Gibbs-equilibrium state as the periods tend to infinity. Applications are given to the Gauss map, and the Bowen-Series map associated with a finitely generated free Fuchsian group…
We explore an approach to the conjecture of Katok on intermediate entropies that based on uniqueness of equilibrium states, provided the entropy function is upper semi-continuous. As an application, we prove Katok's conjecture for Mañé diffeomorphisms.
We address the problem of existence and uniqueness (finite- ness) of ergodic equilibrium states for a natural class of partially hyperbolic dynamics homotopic to Anosov. We propose to study the disintegration of equilibrium states along central foliation as a tool to develop the theory of equilibrium states for partially hyperbolic dynamics.
Using an approach due to Bowen, Franco showed that continuous expansive flows with specification have unique equilibrium states for potentials with the Bowen property. We show that this conclusion remains true using weaker non-uniform versions of specification, expansivity, and the Bowen property. We also establish a corresponding result for homeomorphisms. In the homeomorphism case, we obtain the upper bound from the level-2 large deviations principle for the unique equilibrium state. The theory presented in this paper provides the basis for an ongoing program to develop the thermodynamic for…
We consider impulsive semiflows defined on compact metric spaces and give sufficient conditions, both on the semiflows and the potentials, for the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states. We also generalize the classical notion of topological pressure to our setting of discontinuous semiflows and prove a variational principle.
Equilibrium states for geodesic flows over closed rank 1 manifolds were studied recently by Burns, Climenhaga, Fisher and Thompson. For sufficiently regular potentials, it was shown that if the singular set does not carry full pressure then the equilibrium state is unique. The main result of this paper is that these equilibrium states have the Kolmogorov property. In particular, these measures are mixing of all orders and have positive entropy. For the Bowen-Margulis measure, we go further and obtain the Bernoulli property from the K-property using classic arguments from Ornstein theory. Our a…
Given a dynamical system with a uniformly hyperbolic (`chaotic') attractor, the physically relevant Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measure can be obtained as the limit of the dynamical evolution of the leaf volume along local unstable manifolds. We extend this geometric construction to the substantially broader class of equilibrium states corresponding to Hölder continuous potentials; these states arise naturally in statistical physics and play a crucial role in studying stochastic behavior of dynamical systems. The key step in our construction is to replace leaf volume with a reference measure that…
We examine uniqueness of equilibrium states for the natural extension of a topologically exact, non-uniformly expanding, local homeomorphism with a Hölder continuous potential function. We do this by applying general techniques developed by Climenhaga and Thompson, and show there is a natural condition on decompositions that guarantees that a unique equilibrium state exists. We then show how to apply these results to partially hyperbolic attractors.
We consider skew-products on $M\times \mathbb{T}^2$, where $M$ is the two-sphere or the two-torus, which are partially hyperbolic and semi-conjugate to an Axiom A diffeomorphism. This class of dynamics includes the open sets of $Ω$-non-stable systems introduced by Abraham, Smale and Shub. We present sufficient conditions, both on the skew-products and the potentials, for the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states, and discuss their statistical stability.
We prove that the geodesic flow on a compact locally CAT(-1) space has the weak specification property, and give various applications. We show that every Hölder potential on the space of geodesics has a unique equilibrium state. We establish the equidistribution of weighted periodic orbits and the large deviations principle for all such measures. The thermodynamic results are proved for the class of expansive flows with weak specification.
We consider families of multimodal interval maps with polynomial growth of the derivative along the critical orbits. For these maps Bruin and Todd have shown the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the potential $ϕ_t:x\mapsto-t\log|Df(x)|$, for $t$ close to 1. We show that these equilibrium states vary continuously in the weak$^*$ topology within such families. Moreover, in the case $t=1$, when the equilibrium states are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue, we show that the densities vary continuously within these families.
This paper is devoted to the study of the thermodynamic formalism for a class of real multimodal maps. This class contains, but it is larger than, Collet-Eckmann. For a map in this class, we prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the geometric potentials $-t \log|Df|$, for the largest possible interval of parameters $t$. We also study the regularity and convexity properties of the pressure function, completely characterising the first order phase transitions. Results concerning the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures with respect to the Lebesgue measure are …
