This paper is devoted to the study of the thermodynamic formalism for a class of real multimodal maps. This class contains, but it is larger than, Collet-Eckmann. For a map in this class, we prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the geometric potentials $-t \log|Df|$, for the largest possible interval of parameters $t$. We also study the regularity and convexity properties of the pressure function, completely characterising the first order phase transitions. Results concerning the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures with respect to the Lebesgue measure are also obtained.
We proved the so called complex bounds for multimodal, infinitely renormalizable analytic maps with bounded combinatorics: deep renormalizations have polynomial-like extensions with definite modulus. The complex bounds is the first step to extend the renormalization theory of unimodal maps to multimodal maps.
In this paper, we consider the renormalization operator $\mathcal R$ for multimodal maps. We prove the renormalization operator $\mathcal R$ is a self-homeomorphism on any totally $\mathcal R$-invariant set. As a corollary, we prove the existence of the full renormalization horseshoe for multimodal maps.
We study the dynamics of the renormalization operator for multimodal maps. In particular, we prove the exponential convergence of this operator for infinitely renormalizable maps with same bounded combinatorial type.
We study the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for multimodal maps of the interval and their generalizations. We also present related results for rational maps on the Riemann sphere.
A numerical algorithm to compute the topological entropy of multimodal maps is proposed. This algorithm results from a closed formula containing the so-called min-max symbols, which are closely related to the kneading symbols. Furthermore, it simplifies a previous algorithm, also based on min-max symbols, which was originally proposed for twice differentiable multimodal maps. The new algorithm has been benchmarked against the old one with a number of multimodal maps, the results being reported in the paper. In particular, the comparison is favorable to the new algorithm, except in the unimodal…
This paper is devoted to the study of dimension theory, in particular multifractal analysis, for multimodal maps. We describe the Lyapunov spectrum, generalising previous results by Todd. We also study the multifractal spectrum of pointwise dimension. The lack of regularity of the thermodynamic formalism for this class of maps is reflected in the phase transitions of the spectra.
We show that a strengthened version of the Collet-Eckmann condition for multimodal maps is topologically invariant. In particular, if f is non-uniformly expanding and the critical points are generic with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant measure, then any map g topologically conjugate to f is also non-uniformly expanding.
In \cite{Mil}, Milnor posed the {\em Monotonicity Conjecture} that the set of parameters within a family of real multimodal polynomial interval maps, for which the topological entropy is constant, is connected. This conjecture was proved for quadratic by Milnor & Thurston \cite{MT} and for cubic maps by Milnor & Tresser, see \cite{MTr} and also \cite{DGMT}. In this paper we will prove the general case.
Let $f$ and $g$ be smooth multimodal maps with no periodic attractors and no neutral points. If a topological conjugacy $h$ between $f$ and $g$ is $C^{1}$ at a point in the nearby expanding set of $f$, then $h$ is a smooth diffeomorphism in the basin of attraction of a renormalization interval of $f$. In particular, if $f:I \to I$ and $g:J \to J$ are $C^r$ unimodal maps and $h$ is $C^{1}$ at a boundary of $I$ then $h$ is $C^r$ in $I$.
Given a multimodal interval map $f:I \to I$ and a Hölder potential $ϕ:I \to \mathbb{R}$, we study the dimension spectrum for equilibrium states of $ϕ$. The main tool here is inducing schemes, used to overcome the presence of critical points. The key issue is to show that enough points are `seen' by a class of inducing schemes. We also compute the Lyapunov spectrum. We obtain the strongest results when $f$ is a Collet-Eckmann map, but our analysis also holds for maps satisfying much weaker growth conditions.
Topological entropy is a measure of complex dynamics. In this regard, multimodal maps play an important role when it comes to study low-dimensional chaotic dynamics or explain some features of higher dimensional complex dynamics with conceptually simple models. In the first part of this paper an analytical formula for the topological entropy of twice differentiable multimodal maps is derived, and some basic properties are studied. This expression involves the so-called min-max symbols, which are closely related to the kneading symbols. Furthermore, its proof leads to a numerical algorithm that…
We consider multimodal maps with holes and study the evolution of the open systems with respect to equilibrium states for both geometric and Hölder potentials. For small holes, we show that a large class of initial distributions share the same escape rate and converge to a unique absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure; we also prove a variational principle connecting the escape rate to the pressure on the survivor set, with no conditions on the placement of the hole. Finally, introducing a weak condition on the centre of the hole, we prove scaling limits for the escape rate for …
For a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps, we study rates of escape with respect to conformal measures associated with a family of geometric potentials. We establish the existence of physically relevant conditionally invariant measures and equilibrium states and prove a relation between the rate of escape and pressure with respect to these potentials. As a consequence, we obtain a Bowen formula: we express the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points which never exit through the hole in terms of the relevant pressure function. Finally, we obtain an expression for the derivative of …
We study the effects of IID random perturbations of amplitude $ε> 0$ on the asymptotic dynamics of one-parameter families $\{f_a : S^1 \to S^1, a \in [0,1]\}$ of smooth multimodal maps which "predominantly expanding", i.e., $|f'_a| \gg 1$ away from small neighborhoods of the critical set $\{ f'_a = 0 \}$. We obtain, for any $ε> 0$, a \emph{checkable, finite-time} criterion on the parameter $a$ for random perturbations of the map $f_a$ to exhibit (i) a unique stationary measure, and (ii) a positive Lyapunov exponent comparable to $\int_{S^1} \log |f_a'| \, dx$. This stands in contrast with the …
We construct equilibrium states, including measures of maximal entropy, for a large (open) class of non-uniformly expanding maps on compact manifolds. Moreover, we study uniqueness of these equilibrium states, as well as some of their ergodic properties.
This paper is an interval dynamics counterpart of three theories founded earlier by the authors, S. Smirnov and others in the setting of the iteration of rational maps on the Riemann sphere: the equivalence of several notions of non-uniform hyperbolicity, Geometric Pressure, and Nice Inducing Schemes methods leading to results in thermodynamical formalism. We work in a setting of generalized multimodal maps, that is smooth maps f of a finite union of compact intervals in R into R with non-flat critical points, such that on its maximal forward invariant set K the map f is topologically transiti…
We investigate a class of area preserving non-uniformly hyperbolic maps of the two torus. First we establish some results on the regularity of the invariant foliations, then we use this knowledge to estimate the rate of mixing.
We consider families of multimodal interval maps with polynomial growth of the derivative along the critical orbits. For these maps Bruin and Todd have shown the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the potential $ϕ_t:x\mapsto-t\log|Df(x)|$, for $t$ close to 1. We show that these equilibrium states vary continuously in the weak$^*$ topology within such families. Moreover, in the case $t=1$, when the equilibrium states are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue, we show that the densities vary continuously within these families.
Let $f:I \to I$ be a $C^2$ multimodal interval map satisfying polynomial growth of the derivatives along critical orbits. We prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the potential $ϕ_t:x\mapsto -t\log|Df(x)|$ for $t$ close to 1, and also that the pressure function $t \mapsto P(ϕ_t)$ is analytic on an appropriate interval near $t = 1$.

We consider a robust class of random non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials with small variation. For each element of this class we develop the Thermodynamical Formalism and prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states among non-uniformly expanding measures. Moreover, we show that these equilibrium states and the random topological pressure vary continuously in this setting.
We study the thermodynamic formalism of sufficiently regular interval maps for Holder continuous potentials. We show that for a hyperbolic potential there is a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure is exponentially mixing. Moreover, we show the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic at such a potential.
We show a general relation between fixed point stability of suitably perturbed transfer operators and convergence to equilibrium (a notion which is strictly related to decay of correlations). We apply this relation to deterministic perturbations of a large class of maps with indifferent fixed points. It turns out that the $L^1$ dependence of the a.c.i.m. on small suitable deterministic changes for these kind of maps is Hölder, with an exponent which is explicitly estimated.
We show that, for a robust ($C^2$-open) class of random non-uniformly expanding maps, there exists equilibrium states for a large class of potentials. In particular, these sytems have measures of maximal entropy. These results also give a partial answer to a question posed by Liu-Zhao. The proof of the main result uses an extension of techniques in recent works by Alves-Araújo, Alves-Bonatti-Viana and Oliveira.
We prove existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for a large class of non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms on compact manifolds and Holder continuous potentials with not very large oscillation. No Markov structure is assumed. If the transformation is topologically mixing there is a unique equilibrium state, it is exact and satisfies a non-uniform Gibbs property. Under mild additional assumptions we also prove that the equilibrium states vary continuously with the dynamics and the potentials (statistical stability) and are also stable under stochastic perturbations of the …
In this work we address the problem of existence and uniqueness (finiteness) of ergodic equilibrium states for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms isotopic to Anosov on $\mathbb{T}^4$, with 2-dimensional center foliation. To do so we propose to study the disintegration of measures along 1-dimensional subfoliations of the center bundle. Moreover, we obtain a more general result characterizing the disintegration of ergodic measures in our context.
We study the existence, uniqueness and rate of decay of correlation of equilibrium measures associated to robust classes of non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials. The approach used in this paper is the spectral analysis of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator. More precisely, we combine the expanding features of the eigenmeasures of the transfer operator with a Lasota-Yorke type inequality to prove the existence of an unique equilibrium measure with fast decay of correlations.
We study continuity, and lack thereof, of thermodynamical properties for one-dimensional dynamical systems. Under quite general hypotheses, the free energy is shown to be almost upper-semicontinuous: some normalised component of a limit measure will have free energy at least that of the limit of the free energies. From this, we deduce results concerning existence and continuity of equilibrium states (statistical stability). Counterexamples to statistical stability in the absence of strong hypotheses are provided.
There is a wealth of results in the literature on the thermodynamic formalism for potentials that are, in some sense, "hyperbolic". We show that for a sufficiently regular one-dimensional map satisfying a weak hyperbolicity assumption, every Holder continuous potential is hyperbolic. A sample consequence is the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic on the space of Holder continuous functions. Another consequence is that every Holder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure has exponential decay of correlations.
We introduce a class of continuous maps f of a compact metric space I admitting inducing schemes and describe the tower constructions associated with them. We then establish a thermodynamical formalism, i.e., describe a class of real-valued potential functions ϕon I which admit unique equilibrium measures μ_ϕminimizing the free energy for a certain class of measures. We also describe ergodic properties of equilibrium measures including decay of correlation and the Central Limit Theorem. Our results apply in particular to some one-dimensional unimodal and multimodal maps as well as to multidime…

This survey article concerns inducing schemes in the context of interval maps. We explain how the study of these induced systems allows for the fine description of, not only, the thermodynamic formalism for certain multimodal maps, but also of its multifractal structure.
In this paper, we use the thermodynamical formalism to show that there exists a unique equilibrium state $μ_ϕ$ for each expanding Thurston map $f: S^2\rightarrow S^2$ together with a real-valued Hölder continuous potential $ϕ$. Here the sphere $S^2$ is equipped with a natural metric induced by $f$, called a visual metric. We also prove that identical equilibrium states correspond to potentials which are co-homologous upto a constant, and that the measure-preserving transformation $f$ of the probability space $(S^2,μ_ϕ)$ is exact, and in particular, mixing and ergodic. Moreover, we establish ve…
We consider a family $\{ T_{r} \colon [0, 1] \circlearrowleft \}_{r \in [0, 1]}$ of Markov interval maps interpolating between the Tent map $T_{0}$ and the Farey map $T_{1}$. Letting $\mathcal{P}_{r}$ denote the Perron-Frobenius operator of $T_{r}$, we show, for $β\in [0, 1]$ and $α\in (0, 1)$, that the asymptotic behaviour of the iterates of $\mathcal{P}_{r}$ applied to observables with a singularity at $β$ of order $α$ is dependent on the structure of the $ω$-limit set of $β$ with respect to $T_{r}$. Having a singularity it seems that such observables do not fall into any of the function cla…
An $S$-unimodal map $f$ with flat critical point satisfying the Misiurewicz condition displays a freezing phase transition in positive spectrum. We analyze statistical properties of the equilibrium state $μ_t$ for the potential $-t\log|Df|$, as well as how the phase transition slows down the rate of decay of correlations. We show that $μ_t$ has exponential decay of correlations for all inverse temperature $t$ contained in the positive entropy phase $(t^-,t^+)$. If the critical point is not too flat, then the freezing point $t^+$ is equal to $1$, and the absolutely continuous invariant probabil…
Let $L:[0,1]\setminus\{d\}\rightarrow [0,1]$ be a one-dimensional Lorenz like expanding map ($d$ is the point of discontinuity), $\mathcal{P}=\{ (0,d),(d,1) \}$ be a partition of $[0,1]$ and $C^α([0,1],\mathcal{P})$ the set of piecewise Hölder-continuous potential of [0,1] with the usual $\mathcal{C}^0$ topology. In this context, we prove, improving a result of \cite{BS03}, that piecewise Hölder-continuous potential $ϕ$ satisfying \linebreak $\max\left\{ \limsup_{n \rightarrow \infty}\frac{1}{n}(S_{n}ϕ)(0),\limsup_{n \rightarrow \infty}\frac{1}{n}(S_{n}ϕ)(1)\right\}<P_{\text{top}}(ϕ,T)$ suppor…
We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. For any $t\in\mathbb R$ we prove the existence of an invariant Borel probability measure which minimizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $J^u$ denotes the Jacobian in the unstable direction. Under a mild condition, we show that any accumulation point of these measures as $t\to+\infty$ minimizes the unstable Lyapunov exponent. …
We investigate the prevalence of Li-Yorke pairs for $C^2$ and $C^3$ multimodal maps $f$ with non-flat critical points. We show that every measurable scrambled set has zero Lebesgue measure and that all strongly wandering sets have zero Lebesgue measure, as does the set of pairs of asymptotic (but not asymptotically periodic) points. If $f$ is topologically mixing and has no Cantor attractor, then typical (w.r.t. two-dimensional Lebesgue measure) pairs are Li-Yorke; if additionally $f$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure (acip), then typical pairs have a dense orbit fo…
For any C1 expanding map f of the circle we study the equilibrium states for the potential -log |f'|. We formulate a C1 generalization of Pesin's Entropy Formula that holds for all the SRB measures if they exist, and for all the (necessarily existing) SRB-like measures. In the C1-generic case Pesin's Entropy Formula holds for a unique SRB measure which is not absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. The result also stands in the non generic case for which no SRB measure exists.
We prove that multimodal maps with an absolutely continuous invariant measure have exponential return time statistics around a.e. point. We also show a `polynomial Gibbs property' for these systems, and that the convergence to the entropy in the Ornstein-Weiss formula has normal fluctuations. These results are also proved for equilibrium states of some Hoelder potentials.
We prove an equidistribution result for $C^{\infty}$ maps with respect to equilibrium states. We apply the result to the time-one map of the geodesic flow of a closed smooth Riemannian manifold.

We consider the dynamics of skew product maps associated with finitely generated semigroups of rational maps on the Riemann sphere. We show that under some conditions on the dynamics and the potential function ψ, there exists a unique equilibrium state for ψand a unique $\exp(¶(ψ)-ψ)$-conformal measure, where P(ψ) denotes the topological pressure of ψ.
Consider a multimodal interval map $f$ of $C^3$ with non-flat critical points. We establish several characterizations of the map $f$ is quasi-symmetrically conjugated to a piecewise affine map in the case $f$ is topologically exact and all of its periodic points are hyperbolic repelling. In particular, we give a negative answer to a question posted by Henk Bruin in \cite{Bru96}.
We study the rate of decay of correlations for equilibrium states associated to a robust class of non-uniformly expanding maps where no Markov assumption is required. We show that the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator acting on the space of Holder continuous observables has a spectral gap and deduce the exponential decay of correlations and the central limit theorem. In particular, we obtain an alternative proof for the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium states and we prove that the topological pressure varies continuously. Finally, we use the spectral properties of the transfer operat…
Consider a rational map $f$ of degree at least 2 acting on its Julia set $J(f)$, a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ: J(f)\rightarrow \R$ and the pressure $P(f,ϕ). In the case where $\sup_{J(f)}ϕ<P(f,phi)$, the uniqueness and stochastic properties of the corresponding equilibrium states have been extensively studied. In this paper we characterize those potentials $ϕ$ for which this property is satisfied for some iterate of $f$, in terms of the expanding properties of the corresponding equilibrium states. A direct consequence of this result is that for a nonuniformly hyperbolic rational map every …
