We develop the specification and orbit-decomposition approach to equilibrium states for parabolic rational maps of the Riemann Sphere. Our result extends the well-known results on uniqueness of equilibrium states in this setting, notably the results of Denker, Przytycki and Urbański. We extend the class of potentials from Hölder to those with the Bowen property on 'good orbits' . We obtain uniqueness of the equilibrium state for potentials satisfying a pressure gap condition which is sharp in the class of potentials we consider. We show that our equilibrium state has the $K$-property, and in particular it has positive entropy. When the potential is Hölder, the theory of equilibrium states is already highly developed. Nevertheless, several interesting results on equilibrium states for Hölder potentials follow readily from our approach. In the family of geometric potentials, we obtain a simple proof of uniqueness of equilibrium states up to the phase transition that occurs at the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. For Hölder potentials on parabolic rational maps, we show that hyperbolicity of the potential is equivalent to having a unique equilibrium state which is fully supported. This does not appear to have been stated in the literature before, although it may be considered folklore.
We develop a Thurston-like theory to characterize geometrically finite rational maps, then apply it to study pinching and plumbing deformations of rational maps. We show that in certain conditions the pinching path converges uniformly and the quasiconformal conjugacy converges uniformly to a semi-conjugacy from the original map to the limit. Conversely, every geometrically finite rational map with parabolic points is the landing point of a pinching path for any prescribed plumbing combinatorics.

Dynamics on parabolic immediate basins for rational Newton maps of entire functions have been studied. It is proved that every parabolic immediate basin contains invariant accesses to the parabolic fixed point at infinity. Moreover, among these accesses there exists a unique dynamically defined access where dynamics are attracted towards the parabolic fixed point, whereas for other accesses, if there is any, the dynamics are repelled.
We consider entire transcendental maps with bounded set of singular values such that periodic rays exist and land. For such maps, we prove a refined version of the Fatou-Shishikura inequality which takes into account rationally invisible periodic orbits, that is, repelling cycles which are not landing points of any periodic ray. More precisely, if there are $q<\infty$ singular orbits, then the sum of the number of attracting, parabolic, Siegel, Cremer or rationally invisible orbits is bounded above by $q$. In particular, there are at most $q$ rationally invisible repelling periodic orbits. The…
We prove that if A is the basin of immediate attraction to a periodic attracting or parabolic point for a rational map f on the Riemann sphere, then periodic points in the boundary of A are dense in this boundary. To prove this in the non simply- connected or parabolic situations we prove a more abstract, geometric coding trees version.
We prove that the Julia set of a rational function $f$ is computable in polynomial time, assuming that the postcritical set of $f$ does not contain any critical points or parabolic periodic orbits.
We classify those rational maps $f: \mathbb{P}^1 \to \mathbb{P}^1$ for which there exists a contravariant tensor $q$ which is parallel, i.e. such that $f^*q // q$, by proving that such maps preserve a parabolic orbifold.
In this paper, we continue exploration of the dynamical and parameter planes of one-parameter families of Schwarz reflections that was initiated in \cite{LLMM1,LLMM2}. Namely, we consider a family of quadrature domains obtained by restricting the Chebyshev cubic polynomial to various univalent discs. Then we perform a quasiconformal surgery that turns these reflections to parabolic rational maps (which is the crucial technical ingredient of our theory). It induces a straightening map between the parameter plane of Schwarz reflections and the parabolic Tricorn. We describe various properties of…
The Ricci flow is a parabolic evolution equation in the space of Riemannian metrics of a smooth manifold. To some extent, Einstein equations give rise to a similar hyperbolic evolution. The present text is an introductory exposition to Bianchi-Ricci and Bianchi-Einstein flows, that is, the restricted finitely dimensional dynamical systems, obtained by considering homogeneous metrics.
Let $H^d$ be the set of all rational maps of degree $d\ge 2$ on the Riemann sphere which are expanding on Julia set. We prove that if $f\in H^d$ and all or all but one critical points (or values) are in the immediate basin of attraction to an attracting fixed point then there exists a polynomial in the component $H(f)$ of $H^d$ containing $f$. If all critical points are in the immediate basin of attraction to an attracting fixed point or parabolic fixed point then $f$ restricted to Julia set is conjugate to the shift on the one-sided shift space of $d$ symbols. We give exotic examples of maps …
We give three families of parabolic rational maps and show that every Cantor set of circles as the Julia set of a non-hyperbolic rational map must be quasisymmetrically equivalent to the Julia set of one map in these families for suitable parameters. Combining a result obtained before, we give a complete classification of the Cantor circles Julia sets in the sense of quasisymmetric equivalence. Moreover, we study the regularity of the components of the Cantor circles Julia sets and establish a sufficient and necessary condition when a component of a Cantor circles Julia set is a quasicircle.
It was known that the Sierpiński carpets can appear as the Julia sets in the families of some rational maps. In this article we present a criterion that guarantees the existence of the carpet Julia sets in some rational maps having exactly one fixed (super-) attracting or parabolic basin. We show that this criterion can be applied to some well known rational maps, such as McMullen maps and Morosawa-Pilgrim family. Moreover, we give also some special examples whose Julia sets are Sierpiński carpets.
We analyze a real one-parameter family of quasiconformal deformations of a hyperbolic rational map known as {\em spinning}. We show that under fairly general hypotheses, the limit of spinning either exists and is unique, or else converges to infinity in the moduli space of rational maps of a fixed degree. When the limit exists, it has either a parabolic fixed point, or a pre-periodic critical point in the Julia set, depending on the combinatorics of the data defining the deformation. The proofs are soft and rely on two ingredients: the construction of a Riemann surface containing the closure o…
We study transcendental singularities of a Schröder map arising from a rational function $f$, using results from complex dynamics and Nevanlinna theory. These maps are transcendental meromorphic functions of finite order in the complex plane. We show that their transcendental singularities lie over the set where $f$ is not semihyperbolic (unhyperbolic). In addition, if they are direct, then they lie over only attracting periodic points of $f$, and moreover, if $f$ is a polynomial, then both direct and indirect singularities lie over attracting, parabolic and Cremer periodic points of $f$. We a…
According to an analogy to quasi-Fuchsian groups, we investigate topological and combinatorial structures of Lyubich and Minsky's affine and hyperbolic 3-laminations associated with the hyperbolic and parabolic quadratic maps. We begin by showing that hyperbolic rational maps in the same hyperbolic component have quasi-isometrically the same 3-laminations. This gives a good reason to regard the main cardioid of the Mandelbrot set as an analogue of the Bers slices in the quasi-Fuchsian space. Then we describe the topological and combinatorial changes of laminations associated with hyperbolic-to…
