Let $H^d$ be the set of all rational maps of degree $d\ge 2$ on the Riemann sphere which are expanding on Julia set. We prove that if $f\in H^d$ and all or all but one critical points (or values) are in the immediate basin of attraction to an attracting fixed point then there exists a polynomial in the component $H(f)$ of $H^d$ containing $f$. If all critical points are in the immediate basin of attraction to an attracting fixed point or parabolic fixed point then $f$ restricted to Julia set is conjugate to the shift on the one-sided shift space of $d$ symbols.
We give exotic examples of maps of an arbitrary degree $d$ with a non-simply connected, completely invariant basin of attraction and arbitrary number $k \ge 2$ of critical points in the basin. For such a map $f\in H^d$ with $k<d$ there is no polynomial in $H(f)$.
Finally we describe a computer experiment joining an exotic example to a Newton's method (for a polynomial) rational function with a 1-parameter family of rational maps.
In this paper, we develop numerical algorithms that use small requirements of storage and operations for the computation of hyperbolic cocycles over a rotation. We present fast algorithms for the iteration of the quasi-periodic cocycles and the computation of the invariant bundles, which is a preliminary step for the computation of invariant whiskered tori.
We prove that the hyperbolic components of bicritical rational maps having two distinct attracting cycles each of period at least two are bounded in the moduli space of bicritical rational maps. Our arguments rely on arithmetic methods.
Let ${\cal H}$ be a hyperbolic component of quadratic rational maps possessing two distinct attracting cycles. We show that ${\cal H}$ has compact closure in moduli space if and only if neither attractor is a fixed point.
In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit. We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence…
Markov partitions persisting in a neighbourhood of hyperbolic components of rational maps were constructed under the condition that closures of Fatou components are disjoint in \cite{R1}. Given such a partition, we characterize all nearby hyperbolic components in terms of the symbolic dynamics. This means we can count them, and also obtain topological information. We also determine extra conditions under which all nearby type IV hyperbolic components are given by matings. These are probably the first known results of this type.
In this paper, we use the Carathéodory Convergence Theory to prove a landing theorem of rays in hyperbolic components with rational arguments. Although the proof is done in the setting of a family of entire transcendental maps with two singular values, the method can be generalized to many other one parameter families, with some modifications.
In this article, we consider a counting problem for orbits of hyperbolic rational maps on the Riemann sphere, where constraints are placed on the multipliers of orbits. Using arguments from work of Dolgopyat, we consider varying and potentially shrinking intervals, and obtain a result which resembles a local central limit theorem for the logarithm of the absolute value of the multiplier and an equidistribution theorem for the holonomies.
We develop a Thurston-like theory to characterize geometrically finite rational maps, then apply it to study pinching and plumbing deformations of rational maps. We show that in certain conditions the pinching path converges uniformly and the quasiconformal conjugacy converges uniformly to a semi-conjugacy from the original map to the limit. Conversely, every geometrically finite rational map with parabolic points is the landing point of a pinching path for any prescribed plumbing combinatorics.
Let $f:\hat{\mathbb C}\to\hat{\mathbb C}$ be a hyperbolic rational map of degree $d\ge2$ on the Riemann sphere. We give several conditions which are equivalent to the condition for the Julia set $J_f$ to be a Cantor set. It has been known that $J_f$ is a Cantor sets if and only if there exists a positive integer $n>0$ such that $\bar{f^{-n}(U)}\subset U$ for some open topological disc $U$ containing no critical values. Let $n_f$ denote the minimal positive integer satisfying the above. The problem is whether $n_f=1$ or not. Let $S_d$ denote the shift locus of rational maps of degree $d$. We sh…
We study the affine orbifold laminations that were constructed by Lyubich and Minsky. An important question left open in their construction is whether these laminations are always locally compact. We show that this is not the case. The counterexample we construct has the property that the regular leaf space contains (many) hyperbolic leaves that intersect the Julia set; whether this can happen is itself a question raised by Lyubich and Minsky.
We prove that the canonical Thurston obstruction for a sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched covering exists if the branched covering is not CLH-equivalent to a rational map.
We prove in this paper that the set of semi-hyperbolic rational maps has Lebesgue measure zero in the space of rational maps of the Riemann sphere for a fixed degree d at least 2. It generalises an earlier result by J. Graczyk and the author who proved the same thing in degree 2.
We construct canonical intertwining semi-models with Kobayashi hyperbolic base space for holomorphic self-maps of complex manifolds which are univalent on some absorbing cocompact hyperbolic domain. In particular, in the unit ball we solve the Valiron equation for hyperbolic univalent self-maps and for hyperbolic semigroups.
Consider a rational map $f$ of degree at least 2 acting on its Julia set $J(f)$, a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ: J(f)\rightarrow \R$ and the pressure $P(f,ϕ). In the case where $\sup_{J(f)}ϕ<P(f,phi)$, the uniqueness and stochastic properties of the corresponding equilibrium states have been extensively studied. In this paper we characterize those potentials $ϕ$ for which this property is satisfied for some iterate of $f$, in terms of the expanding properties of the corresponding equilibrium states. A direct consequence of this result is that for a nonuniformly hyperbolic rational map every …
In 1980's, Thurston established a combinatorial characterization for post-critically finite rational maps. This criterion was then extended by Cui, Jiang, and Sullivan to sub-hyperbolic rational maps. The goal of this paper is to present a new but simpler proof of this result by adapting the argument in the proof of Thurston's Theorem.
We consider the dynamics arising from the iteration of an arbitrary sequence of polynomials with uniformly bounded degrees and coefficients and show that, as parameters vary within a single hyperbolic component in parameter space, certain properties of the corresponding Julia sets are preserved. In particular, we show that if the sequence is hyperbolic and all the Julia sets are connected, then the whole basin at infinity moves holomorphically. This extends also to the landing points of external rays and the resultant holomorphic motion of the Julia sets coincides with that obtained earlier us…
Recently Merenkov and Sabitova introduced the notion of a homogeneous planar set. Using this notion they proved a result for Sierpi${ń}$ski carpet Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps that relates the diameters of the peripheral circles to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. We extend this theorem to Julia sets (not necessarily Sierpi${ń}$ski carpets) of semi-hyperbolic rational maps, and prove a stronger version of the theorem that was conjectured by Merenkov and Sabitova.
Given an n-dimensional C^r-diffeomorphism g, its renormalized iteration is an iteration of g, restricted to a certain n-dimensional ball and taken in some C^r-coordinates in which the ball acquires radius 1. We show that for any r >/- 1 the renormalized iterations of C^r -close to identity maps of an n-dimensional unit ball B^n (n >/- 2) form a residual set among all orientation-preserving C^r -diffeomorphisms B^n \to R^n. In other words, any generic n-dimensional dynamical phenomenon can be obtained by iterations of C^r -close to identity maps, with the same dimension of the phase space. As a…
Given a sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched covering which is not CLH-equivalent a rational map, it must have the non-empty canonical Thurston obstruction. By using this canonical Thurston obstruction, we decompose this dynamical system in this paper into several sub-dynamical systems. Each of these sub-dynamical systems is either a post-critically finite type branched covering or a sub-hyperbolic semi-rational type branched covering. If a sub-dynamical system is a post-critically finite type branched covering with a hyperbolic orbifold, then it has no Thurston obstruction and is combinatori…
For a rational map $f$ and a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ$ satisfying $$ \supϕ< P(f,ϕ)$$ the uniqueness and stochastic properties of the corresponding equilibrium states have been extensively studied. For a given rational map $f$, in this paper we characterize those Hölder continuous potentials $ϕ$ for which this property is satisfied for some iterate of $f$.
Let $\{f_ν\}$ be a sequence of holomorphic self-maps of a hyperbolic Riemann surface $X$. In this paper we shall study the asymptotic behavior of the sequences obtained by iteratively left-composing or right-composing the maps $\{f_ν\}$; the sequences of self-maps of $X$ so obtained are called left (respectively, right) iterated function systems. We shall prove the analogue for left iterated function systems of the theorems proved by Beardon, Carne, Minda and Ng for right iterated function systems with value in a Bloch domain; and we shall extend to the setting of general hyperbolic Riemann su…
We give formulas for the numbers of type II and type IV hyperbolic components in the space of quadratic rational maps, for all fixed periods of attractive cycles.
We consider the dynamics of rational semigroups (semigroups of rational maps) on the Riemann sphere. We provide proof that a random backward iteration algorithm to draw the pictures of the Julia sets, previously proven to work in the context of iteration of a rational map of degree two or more, extends to finitely generated rational semigroups (of a certain type). We also provide some consequences of this result.
Iteration of the function $f_λ(z)=λ+ z+\tan z, z \in \mathbb{C}$ is investigated in this article. It is proved that for every $λ$, the Fatou set of $f_λ$ has a completely invariant Baker domain $B$; we call it the primary Fatou component. The rest of the results deals with $f_λ$ when it is topologically hyperbolic. For all real $λ$ or $λ$ such that $ λ=πk +i λ_2$ for some integer $k$ and $0 < λ_2<1$, the only other Fatou component is shown to be another completely invariant Baker domain. It is proved that if $|2+λ^2|<1$, then the Fatou set is the union of $B$ and infinitely many invariant attr…
Let $K$ denote either $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$. In this article, we introduce two new equivariants associated to a rational map $f\in K(z)$. These objects naturally live on a real hyperbolic space, and carry information about the action of $f$ on $\mathbb{P}^1(K)$. When $K=\mathbb{C}$ we relate the asymptotic behavior of these equivariants to the conformal barycenter of the measure of maximal entropy. We also give a complete description of these objects for rational maps of degree $d=1$. The constructions in this article are based on work of Rumely in the context of rational maps over non-…
We consider fiber-preserving complex dynamics on fiber bundles whose fibers are Riemann spheres and whose base spaces are compact metric spaces. In this context, without any assumption on (semi-)hyperbolicity, we show that the fiberwise Julia sets are uniformly perfect. From this result, we show that, for any semigroup $G$ generated by a compact family of rational maps on the Riemann sphere of degree two or greater, the Julia set of any subsemigroup of $G$ is uniformly perfect. We define the semi-hyperbolicity of dynamics on fiber bundles and show that, if the dynamics on a fiber bundle is sem…
One of the conspicuous features of real slices of bicritical rational maps is the existence of Tricorn-type hyperbolic components. Such a hyperbolic component is called invisible if the non-bifurcating sub-arcs on its boundary do not intersect the closure of any other hyperbolic component. Numerical evidence suggests an abundance of invisible Tricorn-type components in real slices of bicritical rational maps. In this paper, we study two different families of real bicritical maps and characterize invisible Tricorn-type components in terms of suitable topological properties in the dynamical plan…
For a contractive iterated function system (IFS), it is known that there is a natural hyperbolic graph structure (augmented tree) on the symbolic space of the IFS that reflects the relationship among neighboring cells, and its hyperbolic boundary with the Gromov metric is Hölder equivalent to the attractor $K$. This setup was taken up to study the probabilistic potential theory on $K$, and the bi-Lipschitz equivalence on $K$. In this paper, we formulate a broad class of hyperbolic graphs, called expansive hyperbolic graphs, to capture the most essential properties from the augmented trees and …
Consider the iteration of an invertible matrix on the projective space: are the Morse components normally hyperbolic? As far as we know, this was only stablished when the matrix is diagonalizable over the complex numbers. In this article we prove that this is true in the far more general context of an arbitrary element of a semisimple Lie group acting on its generalized flag manifolds: the so called translations on flag manifolds. This context encompasses the iteration of an invertible non-diagonazible matrix on the real or complex projective space, the classical flag manifolds of real or comp…
Let $Λ$ be a quasi-projective variety and assume that, either $Λ$ is a subvariety of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d$ rational maps, or $Λ$ parametrizes an algebraic family $(f_λ)_{λ\inΛ}$ of degree $d$ rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We prove the equidistribution of parameters having $p$ distinct neutral cycles towards the $p$-th bifurcation current letting the periods of the cycles go to $\infty$, with an exponential speed of convergence. We deduce several fundamental consequences of this result on equidistribution and counting of hyperbolic components. A key step of the proof…
We show some level-2 large deviation principles for rational maps satisfying a strong form of non-uniform hyperbolicity, called "Topological Collet-Eckmann". More precisely, we prove a large deviation principle for the distribution of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. For this purpose we show that each H{ö}lder continuous potential admits a unique equilibrium state, and that the pressure function can be characterized in terms of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. Then we use a variant of a general result of Kifer.
We study skew-product dynamics for a large class of finitely-generated semi--hyperbolic semigroups of rational maps acting on the Riemann sphere, which generalizes both the theory of iteration of a single rational map of a single complex variable complex/holomorphic dynamics) and the theory of countable alphabet conformal iterated function systems (CIFSs). We construct the thermodynamic formalism for such dynamical systems and geometric potentials by developing the notion of nice families that extend to the case of our highly disconnected skew product phase space the powerful notion of nice se…
In this paper, we construct geometrically finite rational maps with buried critical points on the boundaries of some hyperbolic components by using the pinching and plumbing deformations.
We discuss analogues of the prime number theorem for a hyperbolic rational map f of degree at least two on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, we provide counting estimates for the number of primitive periodic orbits of f ordered by their multiplier, and also obtain equidistribution of the associated holonomies; both estimates have power savings error terms. Our counting and equidistribution results will follow from a study of dynamical zeta functions that have been twisted by characters of $S^1$. We will show that these zeta functions are non-vanishing on a half plane $\Re(s) > δ- ε$, where $…
It is a theorem of Denker and Urbański ('91) that if $T:\mathbb C\to\mathbb C$ is a rational map of degree at least two and if $ϕ:\mathbb C\to\mathbb R$ is Hölder continuous and satisfies the "thermodynamic expanding" condition $P(T,ϕ) > \sup(ϕ)$, then there exists exactly one equilibrium state $μ$ for $T$ and $ϕ$, and furthermore $(\mathbb C,T,μ)$ is metrically exact. We extend these results to the case of a holomorphic random dynamical system on $\mathbb C$, using the concepts of relative pressure and relative entropy of such a system, and the variational principle of Bogenschütz ('92/'93). …
Let $f:\widehat{\mathbb{C}}\rightarrow \widehat{\mathbb{C}}$ be a hyperbolic rational map of degree $d \geq 2$, and let $J \subset \mathbb{C}$ be its Julia set. We prove that $J$ always has positive Fourier dimension. The case where $J$ is included in a circle follows from a recent work of Sahlsten and Stevens, see arXiv:2009.01703. In the case where $J$ is not included in a circle, we prove that a large family of probability measures supported on $J$ exhibit polynomial Fourier decay: our result applies in particular to the measure of maximal entropy and to the conformal measure.
We prove: If $f(z)$ is a critically finite rational map which has exactly two critical points and which is not conjugate to a polynomial, then the boundary of every Fatou component of $f$ is a Jordan curve. If $f(z)$ is a hyperbolic critically finite rational map all of whose postcritical points are periodic, then there exists a cycle of Fatou components whose boundaries are Jordan curves. We give examples of critically finite hyperbolic rational maps $f$ with the property that on the closure of a Fatou component $Ω$ satisfying $f(Ω)=Ω$, $f|_{\bdry Ω}$ is not topologically conjugate to the dyn…
We show that Fatou components of a semi-hyperbolic rational map are John domains and that the converse does not hold. This generalizes a famous result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz. We show that a connected Julia set is locally connected for a large class of non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps. This class is more general than semi-hyperbolicity and includes Collet-Eckmann and Topological Collet-Eckmann maps and maps verifying a summability condition (as considered by Graczyk and Smirnov).
In this article we show that for every collection $\mathcal{C}$ of an even number of polynomials, all of the same degree $d>2$ and in general position, there exist two hyperbolic $3$-orbifolds $M_1$ and $M_2$ with a Möbius morphism $α:M_1\rightarrow M_2$ such that the restriction of $α$ to the boundaries $\partial M_1$ and $\partial M_2$ forms a collection of maps $Q$ in the same conformal Hurwitz class of the initial collection $\mathcal{C}$. Also, we discuss the relationship between conformal Hurwitz classes of rational maps and classes of continuous isomorphisms of sandwich products on the …
Let f be a dominant rational map of P^k such that there exists s <k, with lambda_s(f)>lambda_l(f) for all l. Under mild hypotheses, we show that, for A outside a pluripolar set of the group of automorphisms of P^k, the map f o A admits a hyperbolic measure of maximal entropy log(lambda_s(f)) with explicit bounds on the Lyapunov exponents. In particular, the result is true for polynomial maps hence for the homogeneous extension of f to P^{k+1}. This provides many examples where non uniform hyperbolic dynamics is established. One of the key tools is to approximate the graph of a meromorphic func…
In the early 1980's Thurston gave a topological characterization of rational maps whose critical points have finite iterated orbits (\cite{Th,DH1}): given a topological branched covering $F$ of the two sphere with finite critical orbits, if $F$ has no Thurston obstructions then $F$ possesses an invariant complex structure (up to isotopy), and is combinatorially equivalent to a rational map. We extend this theory to the setting of rational maps with infinite critical orbits, assuming a certain kind of hyperbolicity. Our study includes also holomorphic dynamical systems that arise as coverings o…
A construction is given of Markov partitions for some rational maps, which persist over regions of parameter space, not confined to single hyperbolic components. The set on which the Markov partition exists, and its boundary, are analysed.
This paper describes new results on the growth and zeros of the Ruelle zeta function for the Julia set of a hyperbolic rational map. It is shown that the zeta function is bounded by $\exp(C_K |s|^δ)$ in strips $|\Re s| \leq K$, where $δ$ is the dimension of the Julia set. This leads to bounds on the number of zeros in strips (interpreted as the Pollicott-Ruelle resonances of this dynamical system). An upper bound on the number of zeros in polynomial regions $\{|\Re s | \leq |\Im s|^α\}$ is given, followed by weaker lower bound estimates in strips $\{\Re s > -C, |\Im s|\leq r\}$, and logarithmi…
The iteration of rational maps is well-understood in dimension 1 but less so in higher dimensions. We study some maps on spaces of matrices which present a weak complexity with respect to the ring structure. First we give some properties of certain rational maps; the simplest example is the rational map which sends the matrix $\mathrm{M}$ onto $\mathrm{M}^2$ for which we exhibit some dynamical properties. Finally we deal with some small perturbations of this map.
We characterize two of the most studied non-uniform hyperbolicity conditions for rational maps, semi-hyperbolicity and the topological Collet-Eckmann condition, in terms of the maximal entropy measure. Using the same tools in the proof of these results we give an extension of a result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz, that semi-hyperbolicity characterizes those polynomial maps whose basin of attraction of infinity is a John domain, to rational maps having a completely invariant attracting basin.
In this paper we investigate the perturbation properties of rational Misiurewicz maps, when the Julia set is the whole sphere (the other case is treated in [1]). In particular, we show that if f is a Misiurewicz map and not a flexible Lattes map, then we can find a hyperbolic map arbitrarily close to f.
In this article, we consider hyperbolic rational maps restricted on thier Julia sets and study about the recurrence rate of typical orbits in arbitrarily small neighbourhoods around them and their relationship to the Hausdorff dimension of such small neighbourhoods.
In 1985 D.Sullivan had introduced a dictionary between two domains of complex dynamics: iterations of rational functions on the Riemann sphere and Kleinian groups. The latters are discrete subgroups of the group of conformal automorphisms of the Riemann sphere. This dictionary motivated many remarkable results in both domains, starting from the famous Sullivan's no wandering domain theorem in the theory of iterations of rational functions. One of the principal objects used in the study of Kleinian groups is the hyperbolic 3- manifold associated to a Kleinian group, which is the quotient of its…
This paper attempts to describe some of the results obtained in the iteration theory of transcendental meromorphic functions, not excluding the case of entire functions. The reader is not expected to be familiar with the iteration theory of rational functions. On the other hand, some aspects where the transcendental case is analogous to the rational case are treated rather briefly here. For example, we introduce the different types of components of the Fatou set that occur in the iteration of rational functions but omit a detailed description of these types. Instead, we concentrate on the type…
Let $Rat_d$ denote the space of holomorphic self-maps of ${\bf P}^1$ of degree $d\geq 2$, and $μ_f$ the measure of maximal entropy for $f\in Rat_d$. The map of measures $f\mapstoμ_f$ is known to be continuous on $Rat_d$, and it is shown here to extend continuously to the boundary of $Rat_d$ in $\bar{Rat}_d \simeq {\bf P}^{2d+1}$, except along a locus $I(d)$ of codimension $d+1$. The set $I(d)$ is also the indeterminacy locus of the iterate map $f\mapsto f^n$ for every $n\geq 2$. The limiting measures are given explicitly, away from $I(d)$. The degenerations of rational maps are also described …
For Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps, we prove that they are quasisymmetrically equivalent to standard Cantor circles (i.e., connected components are round circles). This gives a quasisymmetric uniformization of all Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps. By analyzing the combinatorial information of the rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, we give a computational formula of the number of the Cantor circle hyperbolic components in the moduli space of rational maps for any fixed degree. We calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of the Julia sets which…
We describe an algorithm for distinguishing hyperbolic components in the parameter space of quadratic rational maps with a periodic critical point. We then illustrate computer images of the hyperbolic components of the parameter spaces V1 - V4, which were produced using our algorithm. We also resolve the singularities of the projective closure of V5 by blowups, giving an alternative proof that as an algebraic curve, the geometric genus of V5 is 1. This explains why we are unable to produce an image for V5.
We consider the dynamics of semi-hyperbolic semigroups generated by finitely many rational maps on the Riemann sphere. Assuming that the nice open set condition holds it is proved that there exists a geometric measure on the Julia set with exponent $h$ equal to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. Both $h$-dimensional Hausdorff and packing measures are finite and positive on the Julia set and are mutually equivalent with Radon-Nikodym derivatives uniformly separated from zero and infinity. All three fractal dimensions, Hausdorff, packing and box counting are equal. It is also proved that …
We introduce a geometric condition of Bloch type which guarantees that a subset of a bounded convex domain in several complex variables is degenerate with respect to every iterated function system. Furthermore we discuss the relations of such a Bloch type condition with the analogous hyperbolic Lipschitz condition.
This research report outlines work, partially joint with Jeremy Kahn and Kevin Pilgrim, which gives parallel theories of elastic graphs and conformal surfaces with boundary. One one hand, this lets us tell when one rubber band network is looser than another, and on the other hand tell when one conformal surface embeds in another. We apply this to give a new characterization of hyperbolic critically finite rational maps among branched self-coverings of the sphere, by a positive criterion: a branched covering is equivalent to a hyperbolic rational map if and only if there is an elastic graph wit…
We introduce a new technique for proving the classical Stable Manifold theorem for hyperbolic fixed points. This method is much more geometrical than the standard approaches which rely on abstract fixed point theorems. It is based on the convergence of a canonical sequence of ``finite time local stable manifolds'' which are related to the dynamics of a finite number of iterations.
We show that the dynamical degree of an (i.i.d) random sequence of dominant, rational self-maps on projective space is almost surely constant. We then apply this result to height growth and height counting problems in random orbits.
