In a context of non-uniformly expanding maps, possibly with the presence of a critical set, we prove the existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for hyperbolic potentials. Moreover, the equilibrium states are expanding measures. This generalizes a result due to Ramos and Viana, where analytical methods are used for maps with no critical sets. The strategy here consists in using a finite number of inducing schemes with a Markov structure in infinitely many symbols to code the dynamics, to obtain an equilibrium state for the associated symbolic dynamics and then projecting it to obtain an equilibrium state for the original map. We apply our results to the important class of multidimensional Viana maps.
We construct inducing schemes for general multi-dimensional piecewise expanding maps where the base transformation is Gibbs-Markov and the return times have exponential tails. Such structures are a crucial tool in proving statistical properties of dynamical systems with some hyperbolicity.
We introduce a class of continuous maps $f$ of a compact topological space $X$ admitting inducing schemes of hyperbolic type and describe the associated tower constructions. We then establish a thermodynamic formalism, i.e., we describe a class of real-valued potential functions $φ$ on $X$ such that $f$ possess a unique equilibrium measure $μ_φ$, associated to each $φ$, which minimizes the free energy among the measures that are liftable to the tower. We also describe some ergodic properties of equilibrium measures including decay of correlations and the central limit theorem. We then study th…
We address the problem of existence and uniqueness (finite- ness) of ergodic equilibrium states for a natural class of partially hyperbolic dynamics homotopic to Anosov. We propose to study the disintegration of equilibrium states along central foliation as a tool to develop the theory of equilibrium states for partially hyperbolic dynamics.
We introduce a class of continuous maps f of a compact metric space I admitting inducing schemes and describe the tower constructions associated with them. We then establish a thermodynamical formalism, i.e., describe a class of real-valued potential functions ϕon I which admit unique equilibrium measures μ_ϕminimizing the free energy for a certain class of measures. We also describe ergodic properties of equilibrium measures including decay of correlation and the Central Limit Theorem. Our results apply in particular to some one-dimensional unimodal and multimodal maps as well as to multidime…
We prove that for a wide family of non-uniformly hyperbolic maps and hyperbolic potentials we have equilibrium stability, i.e. the equilibrium states depend continuously on the dynamics and the potential. For this we deduce that the topological pressure is continuous as a function of the dynamics and the potential. We also prove the existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for non-uniformly hyperbolic skew products and hyperbolic Hölder continuous potentials. Finally we show that these equilibrium states vary continuously in the weak$^\ast$ topology within such systems.
We consider continuous maps $f:X\to X$ on compact metric spaces admitting inducing schemes of hyperbolic type introduced in [15] as well as the induced maps $\tilde{f}:\tilde{X}\to\tilde{X}$ and the associated tower maps $\hat{f}:\hat{X} \to \hat {X}$. For a certain class of potential functions $φ$ on $X$, which includes all Hölder continuous functions, we establish thermodynamic formalism for each of the above three systems and we describe some relations between the corresponding equilibrium measures. Furthermore we study ergodic properties of these equilibrium measures including the Bernoull…
We prove that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits for any Hölder continuous potential $V$ at most one equilibrium state for $V$ among regular measures. We give a condition on $V$ which ensures that no singularity can be an equilibrium state. Thus, for these $V$'s, there exists a unique equilibrium state and it is a regular measure. Applying this for $V\equiv 0$, we show that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits a unique measure of maximal entropy.
We prove that a class of partially hyperbolic attractors introduced by Castro and Nascimento have unique equilibrium states for natural classes of potentials. We also show if the attractors are $C^2$ and have invariant stable and centerunstable foliations, then there is a unique equilibrium state for the geometric potential and its 1-parameter family. We do this by applying general techniques developed by Climenhaga and Thompson.
In this paper, we study ergodic features of invariant measures for the partially hyperbolic horseshoe at the boundary of uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms constructed in \cite{DHRS07}. Despite the fact that the non-wandering set is a horseshoe, it contains intervals. We prove that every recurrent point has non-zero Lyapunov exponents and all ergodic invariant measures are hyperbolic. As a consequence, we obtain the existence of equilibrium measures for any continuous potential. We also obtain an example of a family of $C^\infty$ potentials with phase transition.
We prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for a family of partially hyperbolic systems, with respect to Holder continuous potentials with small variation. The family comes from the projection, on the center-unstable direction, of a family of partially hyperbolic horseshoes introduced in [Díaz,L., Horita,V., Rios, I., Sambarino, M., Destroying horseshoes via heterodimensional cycles: generating bifurcations inside homoclinic classes, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, 2009]. For the original three dimensional system, we consider potentials with small variation, constant on loca…
We derive some statistical properties for equilibrium states of partially hyperbolic horseshoes. We define a projection map associated to the horseshoe and prove a spectral gap for its transfer operator acting on the space of Hölder continuous observables. From this we deduce an exponential decay of correlations and a central limit theorem. We finally extend these results to the horseshoe.
In this paper we consider horseshoes containing an orbit of homoclinic tangency accumulated by periodic points. We prove a version of the Invariant Manifolds Theorem, construct finite Markov partitions and use them to prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states associated to Hölder continuous potentials.
The classical theorem of Moser, on the existence of a normal form in the neighbourhood of a hyperbolic equilibrium, is extended to a class of real-analytic Hamiltonians with aperiodically time-dependent perturbations. A stronger result is obtained in the case in which the perturbing function exhibits a time decay.
There is a wealth of results in the literature on the thermodynamic formalism for potentials that are, in some sense, "hyperbolic". We show that for a sufficiently regular one-dimensional map satisfying a weak hyperbolicity assumption, every Holder continuous potential is hyperbolic. A sample consequence is the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic on the space of Holder continuous functions. Another consequence is that every Holder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure has exponential decay of correlations.
We study the thermodynamic formalism of sufficiently regular interval maps for Holder continuous potentials. We show that for a hyperbolic potential there is a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure is exponentially mixing. Moreover, we show the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic at such a potential.
We consider a wide family of non-uniformly expanding maps and hyperbolic Hölder continuous potentials. We prove that the unique equilibrium state associated to each element of this family is given by the eigenfunction of the transfer operator and the eigenmeasure of the dual operator (both having the spectral radius as eigenvalue). We show that the transfer operator has the spectral gap property in some space of Hölder continuous observables and from this we obtain an exponential decay of correlations and a central limit theorem for the equilibrium state. Moreover, we establish the analyticity…
For a smooth map f of a compact interval I admitting an inducing scheme we establish a thermodynamical formalism, i.e., describe a class of real-valued potential functions $ϕ$ on I which admit a unique equilibrium measure $μ_ϕ$. Our results apply to unimodal maps corresponding to a positive Lebesgue measure set of parameters in a one-parameter transverse family.
$M$ is a Riemannian, boundaryless, and compact manifold with $\dim M\geq 2$, and $f$ is a $C^{1+β}$ ($β>0$) diffeomorphism of $M$. $φ$ is a Hölder continuous potential on $M$. We construct an invariant and absolutely continuous family of measures (with transformation relations defined by $φ$), which sit on local unstable leaves. We present two main applications. First, given an ergodic homoclinic class $H_χ(p)$, we prove that $φ$ admits a local equilibrium state on $H_χ(p)$ if and only if $φ$ is "recurrent on $H_χ(p)$" (a condition tested by counting periodic points), and one of the leaf measu…
The transfer operator corresponding to a uniformly expanding map enjoys good spectral properties. Here it is verified that coupling yields explicit estimates that depend continuously on the expansion and distortion constants of the map. For nonuniformly expanding maps with a uniformly expanding induced map, we obtain explicit estimates for mixing rates (exponential, stretched exponential, polynomial) that again depend continuously on the constants for the induced map together with data associated to the inducing time. Finally, for nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations, we obtain the correspo…
Unstable pressure and u-equilibrium states are introduced and investigated for a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphsim $f$. We define the u-pressure $P^u(f, φ)$ of $f$ at a continuous function $φ$ via the dynamics of $f$ on local unstable leaves. A variational principle for unstable pressure $P^u(f, φ)$, which states that $P^u(f, φ)$ is the supremum of the sum of the unstable entropy and the integral of $φ$ taken over all invariant measures, is obtained. U-equilibrium states at which the supremum in the variational principle attains and their relation to Gibbs u-states are studied. Differentiabi…
We study thermodynamic formalism for topologically transitive partially hyperbolic systems in which the center-stable bundle satisfies a bounded expansion property, and show that every potential function satisfying the Bowen property has a unique equilibrium measure. Our method is to use tools from geometric measure theory to construct a suitable family of reference measures on unstable leaves as a dynamical analogue of Hausdorff measure, and then show that the averaged pushforwards of these measures converge to a measure that has the Gibbs property and is the unique equilibrium measure.
We consider a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps from the unit square to itself preserving a contracting foliation and inducing a piecewise expanding quotient map, with infinite derivative (like the first return maps of Lorenz like flows). We show how the physical measure of those systems can be rigorously approximated with an explicitly given bound on the error, with respect to the Wasserstein distance. We apply this to the rigorous computation of the dimension of the measure. We present a rigorous implementation of the algorithms using interval arithmetics, and the result of the computation …
We consider families of systems of two-dimensional ordinary differential equations with the origin $0$ as a non-hyperbolic equilibrium. For any number $s \in (-\infty, +\infty)$ we show that it is possible to choose a parameter in these equations such that the stability index $σ(0)$ is precisely $σ(0)=s$. In contrast to that, for a hyperbolic equilibrium $x$ it is known that either $σ(x)=-\infty$ or $σ(x)=+\infty$. Furthermore, we discuss a system with an equilibrium that is locally unstable but globally attracting, highlighting some subtle differences between the local and non-local stability…
We consider a general relation between fixed point stability of suitably perturbed transfer operators and convergence to equilibrium (a notion which is strictly related to decay of correlations). We apply this relation to deterministic perturbations of a class of (piecewise) partially hyperbolic skew products whose behavior on the preserved fibration is dominated by the expansion of the base map. In particular we apply the results to power law mixing toral extensions. It turns out that in this case, the dependence of the physical measure on small deterministic perturbations, in a suitable anis…
We consider a Hamiltonian system which has an elliptic-hyperbolic equilibrium with a homoclinic loop. We identify the set of orbits which are homoclinic to the center manifold of the equilibrium via a Lyapunov- Schmidt reduction procedure. This leads to the study of a singularity which inherits certain structure from the Hamiltonian nature of the system. Under non-degeneracy assumptions, we classify the possible Morse indices of this singularity, permitting a local description of the set of homoclinic orbits. We also consider the case of time-reversible Hamiltonian systems.
Consider a rational map $f$ of degree at least 2 acting on its Julia set $J(f)$, a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ: J(f)\rightarrow \R$ and the pressure $P(f,ϕ). In the case where $\sup_{J(f)}ϕ<P(f,phi)$, the uniqueness and stochastic properties of the corresponding equilibrium states have been extensively studied. In this paper we characterize those potentials $ϕ$ for which this property is satisfied for some iterate of $f$, in terms of the expanding properties of the corresponding equilibrium states. A direct consequence of this result is that for a nonuniformly hyperbolic rational map every …
We prove an abstract result establishing that one can obtain the convergence of Rare Events Point Processes counting the number of orbital visits to a sequence of shrinking target sets from the convergence of corresponding point processes for some induced system and matching shadowing shrinking sets inside the base of the inducing scheme. We apply this result to prove a dichotomy for two classes of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps: Misiurewicz quadratic maps and doubly intermittent maps. The dichotomy holds in the sense that the shrinking target sets may accumulate in any individual poin…
We study decay of correlations, the asymptotic distribution of hitting times and fluctuations of the return times for a robust class of multidimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic transformations. Oliveira and Viana [15] proved that there is a unique equilibrium state for a large class of non- uniformly expanding transformations and Holder continuous potentials with small variation. For an open class of potentials with small variation, we prove quasi-compactness of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator in a space $V_θ$ of functions with essential bounded variation that strictly contain Holder con…
Consider a topologically exact $C^3$ interval map without non-flat critical points. Following the works we did in \cite{LiRiv12two}, we give two equivalent characterizations of hyperbolic Hölder continuous potential in terms of the Lyapunov exponents and the measure-theoretic entropies of equilibrium states for those potentials.
Given a multimodal interval map $f:I \to I$ and a Hölder potential $ϕ:I \to \mathbb{R}$, we study the dimension spectrum for equilibrium states of $ϕ$. The main tool here is inducing schemes, used to overcome the presence of critical points. The key issue is to show that enough points are `seen' by a class of inducing schemes. We also compute the Lyapunov spectrum. We obtain the strongest results when $f$ is a Collet-Eckmann map, but our analysis also holds for maps satisfying much weaker growth conditions.
A classical result in thermodynamic formalism is that for uniformly hyperbolic systems, every Hölder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state. One proof of this fact is due to Rufus Bowen and uses the fact that such systems satisfy expansivity and specification properties. In these notes, we survey recent progress that uses generalizations of these properties to extend Bowen's arguments beyond uniform hyperbolicity, including applications to partially hyperbolic systems and geodesic flows beyond negative curvature. We include a new criterion for uniqueness of equilibrium states for …
We consider the thermodynamic formalism of a complex rational map $f$ of degree at least two, viewed as a dynamical system acting on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, for a real parameter $t$ we study the (non-)existence of equilibrium states of $f$ for the potential $-t \ln |f'|$, and the analytic dependence on $t$ of the corresponding pressure function. We give a fairly complete description of the thermodynamic formalism of a rational map that is "expanding away from critical points" and that has arbitrarily small "nice sets" with some additional properties. Our results apply in particular…
In the context of smooth interval maps, we study an inducing scheme approach to prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for potentials $ϕ$ with he `bounded range' condition $\sup ϕ- \inf ϕ< \htop$, first used by Hofbauer and Keller. We compare our results to Hofbauer and Keller's use of Perron-Frobenius operators. We demonstrate that this `bounded range' condition on the potential is important even if the potential is Hölder continuous. We also prove analyticity of the pressure in this context.
We investigate a class of area preserving non-uniformly hyperbolic maps of the two torus. First we establish some results on the regularity of the invariant foliations, then we use this knowledge to estimate the rate of mixing.
We investigate the dynamics of semigroups of rational maps on the Riemann sphere. To establish a fractal theory of the Julia sets of infinitely generated semigroups of rational maps, we introduce a new class of semigroups which we call nicely expanding rational semigroups. More precisely, we prove Bowen's formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the pre-Julia sets, which we also introduce in this paper. We apply our results to the study of the Julia sets of non-hyperbolic rational semigroups. For these results, we do not assume the cone condition, which has been assumed in the study of infinite …
This survey describes the recent advances in the construction of Markov partitions for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems. One important feature of this development comes from a finer theory of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, which we also describe. The Markov partition defines a symbolic extension that is finite-to-one and onto a non-uniformly hyperbolic locus, and this provides dynamical and statistical consequences such as estimates on the number of closed orbits and properties of equilibrium measures. The class of systems includes diffeomorphisms, flows, and maps with singularities.
For a rational map $f$ and a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ$ satisfying $$ \supϕ< P(f,ϕ)$$ the uniqueness and stochastic properties of the corresponding equilibrium states have been extensively studied. For a given rational map $f$, in this paper we characterize those Hölder continuous potentials $ϕ$ for which this property is satisfied for some iterate of $f$.

Using an approach due to Bowen, Franco showed that continuous expansive flows with specification have unique equilibrium states for potentials with the Bowen property. We show that this conclusion remains true using weaker non-uniform versions of specification, expansivity, and the Bowen property. We also establish a corresponding result for homeomorphisms. In the homeomorphism case, we obtain the upper bound from the level-2 large deviations principle for the unique equilibrium state. The theory presented in this paper provides the basis for an ongoing program to develop the thermodynamic for…
We extend results on robust exponential mixing for geometric Lorenz attractors, with a dense orbit and a unique singularity, to singular-hyperbolic attracting sets with any number of (either Lorenz- or non-Lorenz-like) singularities and finitely many ergodic physical/SRB invariant probability measures, whose basins cover a full Lebesgue measure subset of the trapping region of the attracting set. We obtain exponential mixing for any physical probability measure supported in the trapping region and also exponential convergence to equilibrium, for a $C^2$ open subset of vector fields in any $d$-…
In this work we address the problem of existence and uniqueness (finiteness) of ergodic equilibrium states for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms isotopic to Anosov on $\mathbb{T}^4$, with 2-dimensional center foliation. To do so we propose to study the disintegration of measures along 1-dimensional subfoliations of the center bundle. Moreover, we obtain a more general result characterizing the disintegration of ergodic measures in our context.
