We extend results on robust exponential mixing for geometric Lorenz attractors, with a dense orbit and a unique singularity, to singular-hyperbolic attracting sets with any number of (either Lorenz- or non-Lorenz-like) singularities and finitely many ergodic physical/SRB invariant probability measures, whose basins cover a full Lebesgue measure subset of the trapping region of the attracting set. We obtain exponential mixing for any physical probability measure supported in the trapping region and also exponential convergence to equilibrium, for a $C^2$ open subset of vector fields in any $d$-dimensional compact manifold ($d\ge3$).
There exists a $C^2$-open and $C^1$-dense subset of vector fields exhibiting singular-hyperbolic attracting sets (with codimension-two stable bundle), in any $d$-dimensional compact manifold ($d\ge3$), which mix exponentiallu with respect to any physical/SRB invariant probability measure. More precisely, we show that given any connected singular-hyperbolic attracting set for a $C^2$-vector field $X$, there exists a $C^1$-close multiple of $X$ of class $C^2$, generating a topologically equivalent flow, which is robustly exponentially mixing with respect to any physical measure for all vector fi…
We show that a sectional-hyperbolic attracting set for a Hölder-$C^1$ vector field admits finitely many physical/SRB measures whose ergodic basins cover Lebesgue almost all points of the basin of topological attraction. In addition, these physical measures depend continuously on the flow in the $C^1$ topology, that is, sectional-hyperbolic attracting sets are statistically stable. To prove these results we show that each central-unstable disk in a neighborhood of this class of attracting sets is eventually expanded to contain a ball whose inner radius is uniformly bounded away from zero.
We consider a dynamical system which has the hyperbolic structure along an attracting invariant manifold $M$. The problem is whether every motion starting in a neighborhood of $M$ possesses an asymptotic phase, i.e. eventually approaches a particular motion on $M$. Earlier, positive solutions to the problem were obtained under the condition that the decay rate of solutions toward the manifold exceeds the decay rate of the solutions within the manifold. We show that in our case the above condition is not necessary. To prove that a neighborhood of $M$ is filled with motions for each of which the…
We numerically study quasiperiodic normally hyperbolic attracting invariant circles that appear for certain parameter values in a family of three-dimensional Henon-like maps. These parameter values make up contour segments in the parameter space where the invariant circles have constant irrational rotation number. At the edges of these segments we find a breakdown of the hyperbolicity of the invariant circle. We observe the collision and loss of smoothness of two of the invariant Lyapunov bundles while the Lyapunov exponents all remain distinct. This is very similar to the breakdown of quasipe…
We obtain a exponential large deviation upper bound for continuous observables on suspension semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base transformation with non-flat singularities and/or discontinuities, where the roof function defining the suspension behaves like the logarithm of the distance to the singular/discontinuous set of the base map. To obtain this upper bound, we show that the base transformation exhibits exponential slow recurrence to the singular set. The results are applied to semiflows modeling singular-hyperbolic attracting sets of $C^2$ vector fields. As corollary of the met…
In this paper, plane polynomial systems having a singular point attracting all orbits in positive time are classified up to topological equivalence. This is done by assigning a combinatorial invariant to the system (a so-called "feasible set" consisting of finitely many vectors with components in the set $\{n/3: n=0,1,2,\ldots\}$), so that two such systems are equivalent if and only if (after appropriately fixing an orientation in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and a heteroclinic separatrix) they have the same feasible set. In fact, this classification is achieved in the more general setting of continuous flo…
Hyperbolic Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs) are locally most repelling or most attracting material surfaces in a finite-time dynamical system. To identify both types of hyperbolic LCSs at the same time instance, the standard practice has been to compute repelling LCSs from future data and attracting LCSs from past data. This approach tacitly assumes that coherent structures in the flow are fundamentally recurrent, and hence gives inconsistent results for temporally aperiodic systems. Here we resolve this inconsistency by showing how both repelling and attracting LCSs are computable at the…
Recent advances enable the simultaneous computation of both attracting and repelling families of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) at the same initial or final time of interest. Obtaining LCS positions at intermediate times, however, has been problematic, because either the repelling or the attracting family is unstable with respect to numerical advection in a given time direction. Here we develop a new approach to compute arbitrary positions of hyperbolic LCS in a numerically robust fashion. Our approach only involves the advection of attracting material surfaces, thereby providing accurat…
We present criteria for statistical stability of attracting sets for vector fields using dynamical conditions on the corresponding generated flows. These conditions are easily verified for all singular-hyperbolic attracting sets of $C^2$ vector fields using known results, providing robust examples of statistically stable singular attracting sets (encompassing in particular the Lorenz and geometrical Lorenz attractors). These conditions are shown to hold also on the persistent but non-robust family of contracting Lorenz flows (also known as Rovella attractors), providing examples of statistical…
In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in \cite{LSvS1} to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcat…
Let f be a non-invertible holomorphic endomorphism of P^k having an attracting set A. We show that, under some natural assumptions, A supports a unique invariant positive closed current τ, of the right bidegree and of mass 1. Moreover, if R is a current supported in a small neighborhood of A then its push-forwards by f^n converge to τexponentially fast. We also prove that the equilibrium measure on A is hyperbolic.
In this paper we address the existence and ergodicity of non-hyperbolic attracting sets for a certain class of smooth endomorphisms on the solid torus. Such systems allow a formulation as a skew product system defined by planar diffeomorphisms have contraction on average which forced by any expanding circle map. These attractors are invariant graphs of upper semicontinuous maps which support exactly one $SRB$ measure. In our approach, these skew product systems arising from iterated function systems generated by a finitely many weak contractive diffeomorphisms. Under some conditions including …
Bautista and Morales proved the existence of periodic orbits in singular-hyperbolic attracting sets(*). In this paper, we extend their result to singular-hyperbolic Lyapunov stable sets. ((*)"Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets", Moscow Mathematical Journal, 6 (2006), 265-297)
We consider both hyperbolic sets and partially hyperbolic sets attracting a set of points with positive volume in a Riemannian manifold. We obtain several results on the topological structure of such sets for diffeomorphisms whose differentiability is bigger than one. We show in particular that there are no partially hyperbolic horseshoes with positive volume for such diffeomorphisms. We also give a description of the limit set of almost every point belonging to a hyperbolic set or a partially hyperbolic set with positive volume.
In hyperbolic dynamics, a well-known result is: every hyperbolic Lyapunov stable set, is attracting; it's natural to wonder if this result is maintained in the sectional-hyperbolic dynamics. This question is still open, although some partial results have been presented. We will prove that all sectional-hyperbolic transitive Lyapunov stable set of codimension one of a vector field X over a compact manifold, with unique singularity Lorenz-like, which is of boundary-type, is an attractor of X.
We study the laminarity of the Green current of endomorphisms of $P^2C$ near hyperbolic measures of saddle type. When these measures are supported by attracting sets, we prove that the Green current is laminar in the basin of attraction and we obtain new ergodic properties. This generalizes some results of Bedford and Jonsson on regular polynomial mappings in $C^2$.
A {\em singular hyperbolic set} is a partially hyperbolic set with singularities (all hyperbolic) and volume expanding central direction \cite{MPP1}. We study connected, singular-hyperbolic, attracting sets with dense closed orbits {\em and only one singularity}. These sets are shown to be transitive for most $C^r$ flows in the Baire's second category sence. In general these sets are shown to be either transitive or the union of two homoclinic classes. In the later case we prove the existence of finitely many homoclinic classes. Our results generalize for singular-hyperbolic systems a well kno…
We consider families of systems of two-dimensional ordinary differential equations with the origin $0$ as a non-hyperbolic equilibrium. For any number $s \in (-\infty, +\infty)$ we show that it is possible to choose a parameter in these equations such that the stability index $σ(0)$ is precisely $σ(0)=s$. In contrast to that, for a hyperbolic equilibrium $x$ it is known that either $σ(x)=-\infty$ or $σ(x)=+\infty$. Furthermore, we discuss a system with an equilibrium that is locally unstable but globally attracting, highlighting some subtle differences between the local and non-local stability…
Singular hyperbolicity is a weakened form of hyperbolicity that has been introduced for vector fields in order to allow non-isolated singularities inside the non-wandering set. A typical example of a singular hyperbolic set is the Lorenz attractor. However, in contrast to uniform hyperbolicity, singular hyperbolicity does not immediately imply robust topological properties, such as the transitivity. In this paper, we prove that open and densely inside the space of $C^1$ vector fields of a compact manifold, any singular hyperbolic attractors is robustly transitive.
We prove that every singular hyperbolic chain transitive set with a singularity does not admit the shadowing property. Using this result we show that if a star flow has the shadowing property on its chain recurrent set then it satisfies Axiom A and the no-cycle conditions; and that if a multisingular hyperbolic set has the shadowing property then it is hyperbolic.
The coexistence of singularities and regular orbits in chain transitive sets has been a major obstacle in understanding the hyperbolic/partial hyperbolic nature of robust dynamics. Notably, the vector fields with all periodic orbits robustly hyperbolic (star flows), are hyperbolic in absence of singularities. Morales, Pacifico and Pujals proposed a partial hyperbolicity called "singular hyperbolicity" that characterizes an open and dense subset of three dimensional star flows. In higher dimensions, Bonatti and da Luz characterize an open and dense set of star vector fields by multi-singular hy…
An {\em attractor} is a transitive set of a flow to which all positive orbit close to it converges. An attractor is {\em singular-hyperbolic} if it has singularities (all hyperbolic) and is partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction \cite{MPP}. The geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{GW} is an example of a singular-hyperbolic attractor with topological dimension $\geq 2$. We shall prove that {\em all} singular-hyperbolic attractors on compact 3-manifolds have topological dimension $\geq 2$. The proof uses the methods in \cite{MP}.
A {\em singular hyperbolic attractor} for flows is a partially hyperbolic attractor with singularities (hyperbolic ones) and volume expanding central direction \cite{mpp1}. The geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{gw} is an example of a singular hyperbolic attractor. In this paper we study the perturbations of singular hyperbolic attractors for three-dimensional flows. It is proved that any attractor obtained from such perturbations contains a singularity. So, there is an upper bound for the number of attractors obtained from such perturbations. Furthermore, every three-dimensional flow $C^r$ clos…
An attractor $Λ$ for a 3-vector field $X$ is singular-hyperbolic if all its singularities are hyperbolic and it is partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction. We prove that $C^{1+α}$ singular-hyperbolic attractors, for some $α>0$, always have zero volume, thus extending an analogous result for uniformly hyperbolic attractors. The same result holds for a class of higher dimensional singular attractors. Moreover, we prove that if $Λ$ is a singular-hyperbolic attractor for $X$ then either it has zero volume or $X$ is an Anosov flow. We also present examples of $C^1$ singular-hyp…
It is given notions of singular hyperbolicity and sectional Lyapunov exponents of orders beyond the classical ones, namely, other dimensions besides the dimension 2 and the full dimension of the central subbundle of the singular hyperbolic set. It is obtained a characterization of dominated splittings, partial and singular hyperbolicity in this broad sense, by using Lyapunov exponents and the notion of infinitesimal Lyapunov functions. Furthermore, it is given alternative requirements to obtain singular hyperbolicity. As an application we obtain some results related to singular hyperbolic sets…
We prove for a generic star vector field $X$ that, if for every chain recurrent class $C$ of $X$ all singularities in $C$ have the same index, then the chain recurrent set of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. We also prove that every Lyapunov stable chain recurrent class of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. As a corollary, we prove that the chain recurrent set of a generic 4-dimensional star flow is singular hyperbolic.
Singular and sectional hyperbolic sets are the objects of the extension of the classical Smale Hyperbolic Theory to flows having invariant sets with singularities accumulated by regular orbits within the set. It is by now well-known that (partially) hyperbolic sets admit adapted metrics. We show the existence of singular adapted metrics for any singular hyperbolic set with respect to a $C^{1}$ vector field on finite dimensional compact manifolds. Moreover, we obtain 2-sectional adapted metrics for certain open classes of 2-sectional hyperbolic sets and also for any hyperbolic set.
For diffeomorphisms or for non-singular flows, there are many results relating properties persistent under C1 perturbations and global structures for the dynamics ( such as hyperbolicity, partial hyperbolicity, dominated splitting). However, a difículty appears when a robust property of a flow holds on a set containing recurrent orbits accumulating a singular point. In [BdL] with Christan Bonatti we propose a a general procedure for adapting the usual hyperbolic structures to the singularities. In this paper, using this tool, we recover the results in [BDP] for flows, showing that robustly cha…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the SRB measure for singular partially hyperbolic flow in dimension $d\ge 3$. The proof does not use Poincaré sectional maps, but uses basic properties of thermodynamic formalism.
Homoclinic tangencies and singular hyperbolicity are involved in the Palis conjecture for vector fields. Typical three dimensional vector fields are well understood by recent works. We study the dynamics of higher dimensional vector fields that are away from homoclinic tangencies. More precisely, we prove that for \emph{any} dimensional vector field that is away from homoclinic tangencies, all singularities contained in its robustly transitive singular set are all hyperbolic and have the same index. Moreover, the robustly transitive set is {$C^1$-generically }partially hyperbolic if the vector…
We study the omega-limit sets $ω_X(x)$ in an isolating block $U$ of a singular-hyperbolic attractor for three-dimensional vector fields $X$. We prove that for every vector field $Y$ close to $X$ the set $ \{x\in U:ω_Y(x)$ contains a singularity$\}$ is {\em residual} in $U$. This is used to prove the persistence of singular-hyperbolic attractors with only one singularity as chain-transitive Lyapunov stable sets. These results generalize well known properties of the geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{gw} and the example in \cite{mpu}.
In the paper, we show that for a generic $C^1$ vector field $X$ on a closed three dimensional manifold $M$, any isolated transitive set of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. It is a partial answer of the conjecture in \cite{MP}.
We prove that any vector field on a three-dimensional compact manifold can be approximated in the C1-topology by one which is singular hyperbolic or by one which exhibits a homoclinic tangency associated to a regular hyperbolic periodic orbit. This answers a conjecture by Palis. During the proof we obtain several other results with independent interest: a compactification of the rescaled sectional Poincaré flow and a generalization of Mañé-Pujals-Sambarino theorem for three-dimensional C2 vector fields with singularities.
In hyperbolic dynamics, a well-known result is that every hyperbolic attracting set, have a finite pseudo-orbit tracing property (FPOTP). It's natural to wonder if this result is maintained in the sectional-hyperbolic dynamics; Komuro in [Lorenz attractors do not have the pseudo-orbit tracing property], provides a negative answer for this question, by proving that the geometric Lorenz Attractor doesn't have a FPOTP. In this paper, we generalized the result of Komuro, we prove that every codimension one sectional-hyperbolic attractor set with a unique singularity Lorenz-like, which is of bounda…
We prove that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits for any Hölder continuous potential $V$ at most one equilibrium state for $V$ among regular measures. We give a condition on $V$ which ensures that no singularity can be an equilibrium state. Thus, for these $V$'s, there exists a unique equilibrium state and it is a regular measure. Applying this for $V\equiv 0$, we show that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits a unique measure of maximal entropy.
A vector field X is called a star flow if every periodic orbit, of any vector field C1-close to X, is hyperbolic. It is known that the chain recurrence classes of a generic star flow X on a 3 or 4 manifold are either hyperbolic or singular hyperbolic (see [MPP] for 3-manifolds and [GLW] on 4-manifolds). As it is defined, the notion of singular hyperbolicity forces the singularities in the same class to have the same index. However, in higher dimension (i.e $\geq 5$) \cite{BdL} shows that singularities of different indices may be robustly in the same chain recurrence class of a star flow. There…
For a partially hyperbolic splitting a $C^1$ vector field $X$ on a $m$-manifold $M$, we obtain singular hyperbolicity whether $E$ is one-dimensional subspace, based on the idea of cross products. We show the existence of adapted metrics for singular hyperbolic set if it has a partially hyperbolic splitting $T_ΓM = E \oplus F$, where $F$ is a volume expanding subbundle, $E$ is an uniformly contracted and one-dimensional subbundle. Theses results extend previous ones from the first author and V. Araújo.
It is known that nonuniformly hyperbolic maps admitting singularities have at most countably many ergodic Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measures. These maps include the Belykh attractor, the geometric Lorenz attractor, and more general Lorenz-type systems. In this paper, we establish easily verifiable sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the number of ergodic SRB measures is at most finite, and provide examples and nonexamples showing that the conditions are necessary in general.
Over the last 10 years or so, advanced statistical properties, including exponential decay of correlations, have been established for certain classes of singular hyperbolic flows in three dimensions. The results apply in particular to the classical Lorenz attractor. However, many of the proofs rely heavily on the smoothness of the stable foliation for the flow. In this paper, we show that many statistical properties hold for singular hyperbolic flows with no smoothness assumption on the stable foliation. These properties include existence of SRB measures, central limit theorems and associated …
We construct a model complete and o-minimal expansion of the field of real numbers such that, for any planar analytic vector field X and any isolated, non-resonant hyperbolic singularity p of X, a transition map for X at p is definable in this structure. This structure also defines all convergent generalized power series with natural support and is polynomially bounded.
We construct Markov partitions for non-invertible and/or singular nonuniformly hyperbolic systems defined on higher dimensional Riemannian manifolds. The generality of the setup covers classical examples not treated so far, such as geodesic flows in closed manifolds, multidimensional billiard maps, and Viana maps, and includes all the recent results of the literature. We also provide a wealth of applications.
We prove that a singular-hyperbolic attractor of a 3-dimensional flow is chaotic, in two strong different senses. Firstly, the flow is expansive: if two points remain close for all times, possibly with time reparametrization, then their orbits coincide. Secondly, there exists a physical (or Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measure supported on the attractor whose ergodic basin covers a full Lebesgue (volume) measure subset of the topological basin of attraction. Moreover this measure has absolutely continuous conditional measures along the center-unstable direction, is a $u$-Gibbs state and an equilibrium …
We generalize the notion of cusp excursion of geodesic rays by introducing for any $k \geq 1$ the $k^{th}$ excursion in the cusps of a hyperbolic $N$-manifold of finite volume. We show that on one hand, this excursion is at most linear for geodesics that are generic with respect to the hitting measure of a random walk. On the other hand, for $k = N-1$, the $k^{th}$ excursion is superlinear for geodesics that are generic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We use this to show that the hitting measure and the Lebesgue measure on the boundary of hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^N$ for any $N \geq 2…
We prove that for any holomorphic map, and any bounded orbit which does not accumulate to a singular set or to an attracting cycle, its lower Lyapunov exponent is non-negative. The same result holds for unbounded orbits, for maps with a bounded singular set. Furthermore, the orbit may accumulate to infinity or to a singular set, as long as it is slow enough.
