We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $δ'_s$ coupling of intensity $β\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}$ on the star graph $Γ$ consisting of $N$ half-lines. The nonlinearity has the form $g(u)=|u|^{p-1}u, p>1.$ In the first part of the paper, under certain restriction on $β$, we prove the existence of the ground state solution as a minimizer of the action functional $S_ω$ on the Nehari manifold. It appears that the family of critical points which contains a ground state consists of $N$ profiles (one symmetric and $N-1$ asymmetric). In particular, for the attractive $δ'_s$ coupling ($β<0$) and the frequency $ω$ above a certain threshold, we managed to specify the ground state.
The second part is devoted to the study of orbital instability of the critical points. We prove spectral instability of the critical points using Grillakis/Jones Instability Theorem. Then orbital instability for $p>2$ follows from the fact that data-solution mapping associated with the equation is of class $C^2$ in $H^1(Γ)$. Moreover, for $p>5$ we complete and concertize instability results showing strong instability (by blow up in finite time) for the particular critical points.
Motivated by NLS, We study a variational problem on hyperbolic space. In particular, we compute its minimum value and we show the minimizer does not exist
We analyze the stationary and traveling wave solutions to a family of degenerate dispersive equations of KdV and NLS-type. In stark contrast to the standard soliton solutions for non-degenerate KdV and NLS equations, the degeneracy of the elliptic operators studied here allows for compactly supported steady or traveling states. As we work in $1$ dimension, ODE methods apply, however the models considered have formally conserved Hamiltonian, Mass and Momentum functionals, which allow for variational analysis as well.
A nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with dispersion averaged nonlinearity of saturated type is considered. Such a nonlocal NLS is of integro-differential type and it arises naturally in modeling fiber-optics communication systems with periodically varying dispersion profile (dispersion management). The associated constrained variational principle is shown to posses a ground state solution by constructing a convergent minimizing sequence through the application of a method similar to the classical concentration compactness principle of Lions. One of the obstacles in applying this variational…
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with pure power nonlinearity on a general compact metric graph, and in particular its stationary solutions with fixed mass. Since the graph is compact, for every value of the mass there is a constant solution. Our scope is to analyze (in dependence of the mass) the variational properties of this solution, as a critical point of the energy functional: local and global minimality, and (orbital) stability. We consider both the subcritical regime and the critical one, in which the features of the graph become relevant. We describe how the above proper…
We consider the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential $iu_t = -Δu + a|x|^{-2}u + |u|^4u$ in three space dimensions. We prove global well-posedness and scattering for $a>-\frac14 +\frac1{25}$. We also carry out the variational analysis needed to treat the focusing case.
Combining the usual energy functional with a higher-order conserved quantity originating from integrability theory, we show that the black soliton is a local minimizer of a quantity that is conserved along the flow of the cubic defocusing NLS equation in one space dimension. This unconstrained variational characterization gives an elementary proof of the orbital stability of the black soliton with respect to perturbations in $H^2(\mathbb{R})$.
This paper is devoted to the existence of non-trivial bound states of prescribed mass for the mass-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact metric graphs. The investigation is based upon a general variational principle which combines the monotonicity trick and a min-max theorem with second order information, and upon the blow-up analysis of bound states with prescribed mass and bounded Morse index.
The paper is devoted to the study of a singularly perturbed fractional Schrödinger equations involving critical frequency and critical growth in the presence of a magnetic field. By using variational methods, we obtain the existence of mountain pass solutions $u_{\varepsilon}$ which tend to the trivial solution as $\varepsilon\rightarrow0$. Moreover, we get infinitely many solutions and sign-changing solutions for the problem in absence of magnetic effects under some extra assumptions.
We investigate the existence of ground states with fixed mass for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a pure power nonlinearity on periodic metric graphs. Within a variational framework, both the $L^2$-subcritical and critical regimes are studied. In the former case, we establish the existence of global minimizers of the NLS energy for every mass and every periodic graph. In the critical regime, a complete topological characterization is derived, providing conditions which allow or prevent ground states of a certain mass from existing. Besides, a rigorous notion of periodic graph is introd…
We study the nature of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation ground states on the product spaces $\R^n\times M^k$, where $M^k$ is a compact Riemannian manifold. We prove that for small $L^2$ masses the ground states coincide with the corresponding $\R^n$ ground states. We also prove that above a critical mass the ground states have nontrivial $M^k$ dependence. Finally, we address the Cauchy problem issue which transform the variational analysis to dynamical stability results.
We study strong instability (by blow-up) of the standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $δ$-interaction on a star graph $Γ$. The key ingredient is a novel variational technique applied to the standing wave solutions being minimizers of a specific variational problem. We also show well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem in the domain of the self-adjoint operator which defines $δ$-interaction. This permits to prove virial identity for the $H^1$- solutions to the Cauchy problem. We also prove certain strong instability results for the standing waves of the NLS-$δ'$ e…
This paper proves existence and stability results of solitary-wave solutions to coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with power-type nonlinearities arising in several models of modern physics. The existence of solitary waves is obtained by solving a variational problem subject to two independent constraints and using the concentration-compactness method. The set of minimizers is shown to be stable and further information about the structures of this set are given. The paper extends the results previously obtained by Cipolatti and Zumpichiatti, Nguyen and Wang, and Ohta.
In this paper we consider the logarithmic Schrödinger equation on a star graph. By using a compactness method, we construct a unique global solution of the associated Cauchy problem in a suitable functional framework. Then we show the existence of several families of standing waves. We also prove the existence of ground states as minimizers of the action on the Nehari manifold. Finally, we show that the ground states are orbitally stable via a variational approach.
We investigate the existence of stationary solutions for the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact metric graphs. In the L2-subcritical setting, we prove the existence of an infinite number of such solutions, for every value of the mass. In the critical regime, this infinity of solutions is established to exists if and only if the mass is lower or equal to a threshold value. Moreover, the relation between this threshold and the topology of the graph is characterized. The investigation is based on variational techniques and some new versions of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities.
In this work we deal with a following nonlinear Schrodinger equation in dimension greater or equal to 3, with a subcritical power-type nonlinearity and a positive potential satisfying a local condition. We prove the existence and concentration of nodal solutions which concentrate around a k - dimensional sphere of RN, where k is between 1 and N-1, as a parameter goes to 0. The radius of such sphere is related with the local minimum of a function which takes into account the potential. Variational methods are used together with the penalization technique in order to overcome the lack of compact…
We consider the existence of bound and ground states for a family of nonlinear elliptic systems in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which involves equations with critical power nonlinearities and Hardy-type singular potentials. The equations are coupled by what we call ``Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries'' non-symmetric terms, which arise in some phenomena of fluid mechanics. By means of variational methods, ground states are derived for several ranges of the positive coupling parameter $ν$. Moreover, by using min-max arguments, we seek bound states under some energy assumptions.
We consider the problem of uniqueness of ground states of prescribed mass for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Energy with power nonlinearity on noncompact metric graphs. We first establish that the Lagrange multiplier appearing in the NLS equation is constant on the set of ground states of mass $μ$, up to an at most countable set of masses. Then we apply this result to obtain uniqueness of ground states on two specific noncompact graphs. Finally we construct a graph that admits at least two ground states with the same mass having different Lagrange multipliers. Our proofs are based on careful variat…
We consider the radial energy-critical non-linear focusing Schrödinger equation in dimension N=3,4,5. An explicit stationnary solution, W, of this equation is known. In a previous work by C. Carlos and F. Merle, the energy E(W) has been shown to be a threshold for the dynamical behavior of solutions of the equation. In the present article, we study the dynamics at the critical level E(u)=E(W) and classify the corresponding solutions. This gives in particular a dynamical characterization of W.
We study the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a forth order dispersion term \[ Δ^2u-βΔu=g(u) \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^N \] in the positive and zero mass regimes: in the former, $N\geq 2$ and $β> -2\sqrt{m}$, where $m>0$ depends on $g$; in the latter, $N\geq 3$ and $β>0$. In either regimes, we find an infinite sequence of solutions under rather generic assumptions about $g$; if $N=2$ in the positive mass case, or $N=4$ in the zero mass case, we need to strengthen such assumptions. Our approach is variational.
We study the focusing energy-critical NLS \begin{align}\label{nls_abstract} i\partial_t u+Δ_{x,y} u=-|u|^{\frac{4}{d-1}} u\tag{NLS} \end{align} on the waveguide manifold $\mathbb{R}_x^d\times\mathbb{T}_y$ with $d\geq 2$. We reveal the somewhat counterintuitive phenomenon that despite the energy-criticality of the nonlinear potential, the long time dynamics of \eqref{nls_abstract} are purely determined by the semivirial-vanishing geometry which possesses an energy-subcritical characteristic. As a starting point, we consider a minimization problem $m_c$ defined on the semivirial-vanishing manifo…
We study solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with prescribed mass and Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions in the unitary ball. Such problem arises in the search of solitary wave solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity on bounded domains. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the existence of such solutions. Moreover, we show that standing waves associated to least energy solutions are always orbitally stable when the nonlinearity is L^2-critical and subcritical, while they are almost always stable in the L^2-s…
We consider a perturbed energy critical focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in three dimensions. We construct solitary wave solutions for focusing subcritical perturbations as well as defocusing supercritical perturbations. The construction relies on the resolvent expansion, which is singular due to the presence of a resonance. Specializing to pure power focusing subcritical perturbations we demonstrate, via variational arguments, and for a certain range of powers, the existence of a ground state solitary wave, which is then shown to be the previously constructed solution. Finally, we pres…
We study standing waves for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a star graph {$\mathcal{G}$} i.e. $N$ half-lines joined at a vertex. At the vertex an interaction occurs described by a boundary condition of delta type with strength $α\leqslant 0$. The nonlinearity is of focusing power type. The dynamics is given by an equation of the form $ i \frac{d}{dt}Ψ_t = H Ψ_t - | Ψ_t |^{2μ} Ψ_t $, where $H$ is the Hamiltonian operator which generates the linear Schrödinger dynamics. We show the existence of several families of standing waves for every sign of the coupling at the vertex for every $ω> \fra…
We consider the focussing energy-critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation: $$ iu_t + Δu + g|u|^2u = 0, u(0)= φ\in \dot{H}^1,\;\; 0 \le g_i \le |x|g \le g_s.$$ On the road map of Kenig-Merle \cite{km} we show the global well-posedness and scattering of radial solutions under energy condition $$E_g(φ) < E_g(Q),\;\;\mbox{and}\;\; g_s\|φ\|_{\dot{H}^1}^2 < \|Q\|_{\dot{H}^1}^2,$$ where $Q$ is the solution of $ΔQ + |x|^{-1}Q^3 = 0$, together with scaling condition $|g(x)| + |x||\nabla g(x)| \lesssim |x|^{-1}$, variational condition $g_s(2-g_i) \le 1$, and rigidity condition $-g(x) \le x\…
We study the focusing NLS \begin{align}\label{nls_abstract} i\partial_t u+Δ_{x,y} u=-|u|^αu\tag{NLS} \end{align} on the waveguide manifold $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{T}$ in the intercritical regime $α\in(\frac{4}{d},\frac{4}{d-1})$. By assuming that the \eqref{nls_abstract} is independent of $y$, it reduces to the focusing intercritical NLS on $\mathbb{R}^d$, which is known to have standing wave and finite time blow-up solutions. Naturally, we ask whether these special solutions with non-trivial $y$-dependence exist. In this paper we give an affirmative answer to this question. To that end, we…
We study the existence of positive solutions on $\R^{N+1}$ to semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu+u=f(u)$ where $N\geq 1$ and $f$ is modeled on the power case $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$. Denoting with $c$ the mountain pass level of $\f(u)=\tfrac 12\|u\|^{2}_{H^{1}(\R^{N})}-\int_{\R^{N}}F(u)\, dx$, $u\in H^{1}(\R^{N})$ ($F(s)=\int_{0}^{s}f(t)\, dt$), we show, via a new energy constrained variational argument, that for any $b\in [0,c)$ there exists a positive bounded solution $v_{b}\in C^{2}(\R^{N+1})$ such that $E_{v_{b}}(y)=\tfrac 12\|\partial_{y}v_{b}(\cdot,y)\|^{2}_{L^{2}(\R^{N})}-V(v_{b}(\cdot,y))=-b$…
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on a star graph $\mathcal{G}$. At the vertex an interaction occurs described by a boundary condition of delta type with strength $α\in \mathbb{R}$. We investigate an orbital instability of the standing waves $e^{iωt}\mathbfΦ(x)$ of NLS-$δ$ equation with attractive power nonlinearity on $\mathcal{G}$ when the profile $Φ(x)$ has mixed structure (i.e. has bumps and tails). In our approach we essentially use the extension theory of symmetric operators by Krein - von Neumann, and the analytic perturbations theory, avoiding the variational techniques…
We study the modulational stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger type. In particular, we prove that the characteristics of the quasi-linear system of equations resulting from a slow modulation approximation satisfy the same equation, up to a change in variables, as the normal form of the linearized spectrum crossing the origin. This normal form is taken from arXiv:1910.05392, where Leisman et al. compute the spectrum of the linearized operator near the origin via an analysis of Jordan chains. We derive the modulation equations using Whitham's form…
We consider the $L^2$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with the delta potential $$i\partial_tu +\partial^2_x u + μδu +|u|^{4}u=0, \, \, t\in \R, \, x\in \R , $$ where $ μ\in \R$, and $δ$ is the Dirac delta distribution at $x=0$. Local well-posedness theory together with sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and the conservation laws of mass and energy implies that the solution with mass less than $\|Q\|_{2}$ is global existence in $H^1(\R)$, where $Q$ is the ground state of the $L^2$-critical NLS without the delta potential (i.e. $μ=0$). We are interested in the dynamics of the sol…
We investigate the $L^2$-supercritical and $\dot{H}^1$-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^1$. In \cite{G1} and \cite{yuan}, the mass-energy quantity $M(Q)^{\frac{1-s_{c}}{s_{c}}}E(Q)$ has been shown to be a threshold for the dynamical behavior of solutions of the equation. In the present paper, we study the dynamics at the critical level $M(u)^{\frac{1-s_{c}}{s_{c}}}E(u)=M(Q)^{\frac{1-s_{c}}{s_{c}}}E(Q)$ and classify the corresponding solutions using modulation theory, non-trivially generalize the results obtained in \cite{holmer3} for the 3D cubic Schrödinger equation.
The uniqueness of the positive ground state solutions of fractional Shrodinger equations with a harmonic potential has not been covered by the breakthrough method developed in [1, 2]. It has remained an open question for years. [3] and [5] were quite recently able to prove the existence of the ground state solutions and to derive important properties but they failed to address the uniqueness. [3] left it as an open question, and [5] run numerical simulations that were in favor of the uniqueness. Very recently, the authors of this note developed a general and unified method to prove the uniquen…
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities, where the leading term is an intracritical focusing power-type nonlinearity, and the perturbation is given by a power-type defocusing one. We completely answer the question wether the ground state energy, which is a threshold between global existence and formation of singularities, is achieved. For any prescribed mass, for mass-supercritical or mass-critical defocusing perturbations, the ground state energy is achieved by a radially symmetric and decreasing solution to the associated stationary equation. For mass-subc…
The aim of this work is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the extension theory of symmetric operators in the investigation of the stability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with two types of non-linearities (power and logarithmic) and two types of point interactions ($δ$- and $δ'$-) on a star graph. Our approach allows us to overcome the use of variational techniques in the investigation of the Morse index for self-adjoint operators with non-standard boundary conditions which appear in the stability study. We also demonstrate how our method simplifies the proof of th…
We investigate the existence of ground states with prescribed mass for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $L^2$-critical power nonlinearity on noncompact quantum graphs. We prove that, unlike the case of the real line, for certain classes of graphs there exist ground states with negative energy for a whole interval of masses. A key role is played by a thorough analysis of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities and on estimates of the optimal constants. Most of the techniques are new and suited to the investigation of variational problems on metric graphs.
In this paper, we characterize a family of solitary waves for NLS with derivative (DNLS) by the structue analysis and the variational argument. Since (DNLS) doesn't enjoy the Galilean invariance any more, the structure analysis here is closely related with the nontrivial momentum and shows the equivalence of nontrivial solutions between the quasilinear and the semilinear equations. Firstly, for the subcritical parameters $4ω>c^2$ and the critical parameters $4ω=c^2, c>0$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solitary waves for (DNLS), up to the phase rotation and spatial translation sym…
We consider the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the circle. We prove that there exist solutions corresponding to an initial datum built on four Fourier modes which form a resonant set, which have a non trivial dynamic that involves periodic energy exchanges between the modes initially excited. It is noticeable that this nonlinear phenomena does not depend on the choice of the resonant set. The dynamical result is obtained by calculating a resonant normal form up to order 10 of the Hamiltonian of the quintic NLS and then by isolating an effective term of order 6. Notice that thi…
We extend our previous result on the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation to the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the focusing cubic nonlinearity in three dimensions, for radial data of energy at most slightly above that of the ground state. We prove that the initial data set splits into nine nonempty, pairwise disjoint regions which are characterized by the distinct behaviors of the solution for large time: blow-up, scattering to 0, or scattering to the family of ground states generated by the phase and scaling freedom. Solutions of this latter type form a smooth center-stable manifold, which c…
Selfdual variational principles are introduced in order to construct solutions for Hamiltonian and other dynamical systems which satisfy a variety of linear and nonlinear boundary conditions including many of the standard ones. These principles lead to new variational proofs of the existence of parabolic flows with prescribed initial conditions, as well as periodic, anti-periodic and skew-periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. They are based on the theory of anti-selfdual Lagrangians introduced and developed recently in [3], [4] and [5].
In \cite{duck-merle}, T. Duyckaerts and F. Merle studied the variational structure near the ground state solution $W$ of the energy critical NLS and classified the solutions with the threshold energy $E(W)$ in dimensions $d=3,4,5$ under the radial assumption. In this paper, we extend the results to all dimensions $d\ge 6$. The main issue in high dimensions is the non-Lipschitz continuity of the nonlinearity which we get around by making full use of the decay property of $W$.
