Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the antiferromagnetic phase transition that is induced by the Zeeman field in a disordered interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. At a fixed interaction strength $U$, the antiferromagnetic correlation is enhanced as the magnetic filed increases, and when the magnetic field is larger than a $B_{c}(U)$, the antiferromagnetic correlation shall be suppressed by the increased magnetic field. The impact of Zeeman field $B$, Coulomb repulsion $U$ and disorder $Δ$ is not isolated. The intensity of magnetic field effect on the antiferromagnetic correlation shall be strongly suppressed by disorder. Differently, it will be promoted by weak interaction, but when $U$ becomes larger than $U_{c}=4.5$, the increased interaction will suppress the intensity of this effect, and here $U_{c}=4.5$ coincides with the critical strength inducing the metal-Mott insulator transition in clean system. Moreover, at a fixed magnetic field $B$, strong interaction shall suppress the antiferromagnetic phase rather than promote it.
The thermoelectric effect in a two-dimensional (2D) massless Dirac fermion (DF) system at the quantum limit is discussed to verify the prediction of high-performance thermopower in an organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3. Because of relatively large Zeeman splitting in α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, the boundless increase of thermopower at high magnetic fields, predicted without the Zeeman effect, is hardly expected, whereas there appears to be a broad local maximum. This is characteristic of 2D DF systems with Zeeman splitting and is recognized in the previous experiment. In contrast to 3D Dirac/Weyl semimeta…
The effect of a Zeeman magnetic field coupled to the spin of the electrons on the conducting properties of the disordered Hubbard model is studied. Using the Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method, the temperature- and magnetic-field- dependent conductivity is calculated,as well as the degree of spin polarization. We find that the Zeeman magnetic field suppresses the metallic behavior present for certain values of interaction- and disorder- strength, and is able to induce a metal-insulator transition at a critical field strength. It is argued that the qualitative features of magnetoconductance…
The magnetic field dependence of electronic transport, magnetic, and elastic properties in single crystals of PbTe were investigated in high magnetic fields up to 55 T. The magnetoresistance, magnetization, ultrasonic attenuation, and sound velocity showed clear quantum oscillations with pronounced Zeeman-splitting, which causes a large second harmonic in the frequency spectra. The ratio of the Zeeman to the cyclotron energy, which is regarded as an index of `Diracness' [H. Hayasaka and Y. Fuseya, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter \textbf{28,} 31LT01 (2016).], was determined to be 0.52 and 0.57 in sam…
We study interacting Dirac quasiparticles in disordered graphene and find that an interplay between the unscreened Coulomb interactions and pseudo-relativistic quasiparticle kinematics can be best revealed in the ballistic regime, whereas in the diffusive limit the behavior is qualitatively (albeit, not quantitatively) similar to that of the ordinary 2DEG with parabolic dispersion. We calculate the quasiparticle width and density of states that can be probed by photoemission, tunneling, and magnetization measurements.
We investigate metal-insulator transitions on an interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The interplay between Coulomb repulsion, disorder and magnetic fields, drives the otherwise semi-metallic regime to insulating phases exhibiting different characters. In particular, with the focus on the transport mechanisms, we uncover that their combination exhibits dichotomic effects. On the one hand, the critical Zeeman field $B_c$, responsible for triggering the band-insulating phase due to spin-polarization on the carriers, is largely reduced…
Recent experiments on bismuth have uncovered remarkably rich magnetization structure at fields well beyond the regime in which all carriers are expected to reside in the lowest Landau level. Motivated by these findings, we start from a microscopic tight-binding model and derive a low-energy Hamiltonian for the holes and three Dirac electrons pockets in bismuth. We find that an unconventional electron Zeeman effect, overlooked previously, suppresses the quantum limit for the electrons dramatically, giving rise to the observed anomalous magnetization structure. We further study interaction effec…
Spin-spin correlation function response in the low electronic density regime and externally applied electric field is evaluated for 2D metallic crystals under Rashba-type coupling, fixed number of particles and two-fold energy band structure. Intrinsic Zeeman-like effect on electron spin polarization, density of states, Fermi surface topology and transverse magnetic susceptibility are analyzed in the zero temperature limit. A possible magnetic state for Dirac electrons depending on the zero field band gap magnitude under this conditions is found.
In this paper we present a method to compute the exact density of states induced by $N$ non magnetic impurities in a system of two dimensional Dirac fermions in the unitarity limit. We review the case of the $π$-flux phase of the Heisenberg model and also treat the disordered d-wave superconductor. In both case we find additional states in the gap with $δρ(ω) \simeq n_i/ |ω(\ln^2 |ω/Δ_0| + (π/2)^2)|$.
We study the dc conductivity of a weakly disordered 2d Dirac electron gas with two bands and two spectral nodes, employing a field theoretical version of the Kubo--Greenwood conductivity formula. In this paper we are concerned with the question how the internode scattering affects the conductivity. We use and compare two established techniques for treating the disorder scattering: The perturbation theory, there ladder and maximally crossed diagrams are summed up, and the functional integral approach. Both turn out to be entirely equivalent. For a large number of random potential configurations…
We present a renormalization group analysis of the disorder effects on the low-energy behaviors of twodimensional tilted Dirac-fermion systems, in which the fermions have two distinct orbitals unrelated by any symmetry. Four types of disordered potential, two interorbital and two intraorbital, are considered. If there is only one type of interorbital disorder, the fermion-disorder scattering induces logarithmic or power-law corrections to the fermion density of states and specific heat. In contrast, the intraorbital disorder can turn the system into a strongly disordered phase. In this disorde…
We investigate disorder effects on Landau levels in Dirac electron systems with the use of a non-Hermitian quasiparticle Hamiltonian formalism. This formalism reveals that spin-dependent scattering rates induce the spectrum collapse of Landau levels, i.e., the disappearance of the energy gaps between n-th and -n-th levels under a finite external magnetic field. The spectrum collapse occurs in both weak and strong magnetic field regimes, thus showing a reentrant behavior. Particularly, in the strong magnetic field regime, in contrast to naive expectation, the increase of a magnetic field stabil…
Disordered 2D chiral fermions provide an effective description of several materials including graphene and topological insulators. While previous analysis considered delta correlated disorder and no ultraviolet cut-offs, we consider here the effect of short range correlated disorder and the presence of a momentum cut-off, providing a more realistic description of condensed matter models. We show that the density of states is anomalous with a critical exponent function of the disorder and that conductivity is universal only when the ultraviolet cut-off is removed, as consequence of the supersym…
Mirror symmetric surfaces of a topological crystalline insulator host even number of Dirac surface states. A surface Zeeman field generically gaps these states leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect. Varying the direction of Zeeman field induces transitions between different surface insulating states with any two Chern numbers between -4 and 4. In the crystal frame the phase boundaries occur for field orientations which are great circles with (111)-like normals on a sphere.
We numerically study the effect of short ranged potential disorder on massless noninteracting three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl fermions, with a focus on the question of the proposed quantum critical point separating the semimetal and diffusive metal phases. We determine the properties of the eigenstates of the disordered Dirac Hamiltonian ($H$) and exactly calculate the density of states (DOS) near zero energy, using a combination of Lanczos on $H^2$ and the kernel polynomial method on $H$. We establish the existence of two distinct types of low energy eigenstates contributing to the disordere…
Inelastic neutron scattering reveals a broad continuum of excitations in Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of which indicate a continuous distribution of quenched transverse fields ($Δ$) acting on the non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ crystal field ground state doublets. Spin-ice correlations are apparent within 0.2 meV of the Zeeman energy. A random phase approximation provides an excellent account of the data with a transverse field distribution $ρ(Δ)\propto (Δ^2+Γ^2)^{-1}$ where $ Γ=0.27(1)$ meV. Established during high temperature synthesis due to an underlying structura…
We study the electronic properties of actual-size graphene nanoribbons subjected to substitutional disorder particularly with regard to the experimentally observed metal-insulator transition. Calculating the local, mean and typical density of states, as well as the time-evolution of the particle density we comment on a possible disorder-induced localisation of charge carriers at and close to the Dirac point within a percolation transition scenario.
System of Dirac fermions with random-varying mass is studied in detail. We reformulate the system by transfer-matrix formalism. Eigenvalues and wave functions are obtained numerically for various configurations of random telegraphic mass m(x). Localized and extended states are identified. For quasi-periodic m(x), low-energy wave functions are also quasi-periodic and extended, though we are not imposing the periodic boundary condition on wave function. On increasing the randomness of the varying mass, states lose periodicity and most of them tend to localize. At the band center or the low-energ…
The Zeeman effect describes the energy change of an atomic quantum state in magnetic field. The magnitude and the direction of this change depend on the dimensionless Lande g-factor. In quantum solids, the response of the Bloch electron states to the magnetic field also exhibits the Zeeman effect with an effective g-factor that was theoretically predicted to be dependent on the momentum. While typically negligible in many ordinary solids, the momentum-dependent variation of the g-factor is theorized to be substantially enhanced in many topological and magnetic systems. However, the momentum-de…
We theoretically study dilute superfluidity of spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions and synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a one-dimensional lattice. Employing a combination of density matrix renormalization group and quantum field theoretical techniques we demonstrate the appearance of a robust superfluid spin-liquid phase in which the spin-sector of this spinor Bose-Einstein condensate remains quantum disordered even after introducing quadratic Zeeman and helical magnetic fields. Despite remaining disordered, the presence of these symmetry breaking fields lifts the perfect s…
We study three-dimensional Dirac fermions with weak finite-range scalar potential disorder. In the clean system, the density of states vanishes quadratically at the Dirac point. Disorder is known to be perturbatively irrelevant, and previous theoretical work has assumed that the Dirac semimetal phase, characterized by a vanishing density of states, survives at weak disorder, with a finite disorder phase transition to a diffusive metal with a non-vanishing density of states. In this paper we show that nonperturbative effects from rare regions, which are missed by conventional disorder-averaged …
The influence of weak disorder on the superconductivity in ordinary metals can be formally described by the Abrikosov-Gorkov diagrammatic approach. The vertex correction is ignored in this approach because an inequality $k_F l \gg 1$, where $k_F$ is the Fermi momentum and $l$ mean free path, is satisfied in ordinary metals with a large Fermi surface. In a Dirac semimetal that has discrete Fermi points, this inequality may break down even for arbitrarily weak disorder since $k_F \rightarrow 0$, and thus the vertex correction could be important. We incorporate the vertex correction into the self…
We study the effect of quenched disorder on the semimetal-superconductor quantum phase transition in a model of two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with $N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions, using perturbative renormalization group methods at one-loop order in a double epsilon expansion. For $N\geq 2$ we find that the Harris-stable clean critical behavior gives way, past a certain critical disorder strength, to a finite-disorder critical point characterized by non-Gaussian critical exponents, a noninteger dynamic critical exponent $z>1$, and a finite Yukawa coupling between Dirac fermions a…
We study the vortex zero-energy bound states in presence of pairing among the low-energy Dirac fermions on the surface of a topological insulator. The pairing symmetries considered include the $s$-wave, $p$-wave, and, in particular, the mixed-parity symmetry, which arises in absence of the inversion symmetry on the surface. The zero-mode is analyzed within the generalized Jackiw-Rossi-Dirac Hamiltonian that contains a momentum-dependent mass-term, and includes the effects of the electromagnetic gauge field and the Zeeman coupling as well. At a finite chemical potential, as long as the spectrum…
We study the quantum phase diagram of a three dimensional non-interacting Dirac semimetal in the presence of either quenched axial or scalar potential disorder, by calculating the average and the typical density of states as well as the inverse participation ratio using numerically exact methods. We show that as a function of the disorder strength a half-filled (i.e. undoped) Dirac semimetal displays three distinct ground states, namely an incompressible semimetal, a compressible diffusive metal, and a localized Anderson insulator, in stark contrast to a conventional dirty metal that only supp…
We study a three-dimensional chiral second order topological insulator (SOTI) subject to a magnetic field. Via its gauge field, the applied magnetic field influences the electronic motion on the lattice, and via the Zeeman effect, the field influences the electronic spin. We compare two approaches to the problem: an effective surface theory, and a full lattice calculation. The surface theory predicts a massive Dirac spectrum on each of the gapped surfaces, giving rise to Landau levels once the surfaces are pierced by magnetic flux. The surface theory qualitatively agrees with our lattice calcu…
We study the low-energy density of states of Dirac fermions in disordered d-wave superconductor. At zero energy, a finite density of states is obtained via the mechanism of dynamical mass generation in an effective (1+1)-dimensional relativistic field theory.
In two-dimensional Dirac semimetals, Cooper pairing instability occurs only when the attractive interaction strength $|u|$ is larger than some critical value $|u_{c}|$ because the density of states vanishes at Dirac points. Disorders enhance the low-energy density of states but meanwhile shorten the lifetime of fermions, which tend to promote and suppress superconductivity, respectively. To determine which of the two competing effects wins, we study the interplay of Cooper pairing interaction and disorder scattering by means of renormalization group method. We consider three types of disorders…
We investigate the spin-ordered states in multilayer massless Dirac fermion systems under magnetic fields, in which the intralayer interaction is ferromagnetic owing to the exchange interaction, while the interlayer interaction is antiferromagnetic arising from the interlayer hopping and the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The possible spin-ordered states are examined within the mean field theory, and we apply it to alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. In the weak interlayer coupling regime the system exhibits a ferromagnetically spin-ordered stat…
We investigate the effect of the interlayer spin-flip tunneling for the interlayer magnetoresistance under magnetic fields in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. The mean field of the spin-flip correlation associated with the interlayer Coulomb interaction enables the interlayer spin-flip tunneling. Assuming the non-vertical interlayer spin-flip tunneling, we calculate the interlayer magnetoresistance using the Kubo formula. The crossover magnetic field, at which the interlayer magnetoresistance changes from positive to negative is shifted b…
We study the properties of the avoided or hidden quantum critical point (AQCP) in three dimensional Dirac and Weyl semi-metals in the presence of short range potential disorder. By computing the averaged density of states (along with its second and fourth derivative at zero energy) with the kernel polynomial method (KPM) we systematically tune the effective length scale that eventually rounds out the transition and leads to an AQCP. We show how to determine the strength of the avoidance, establishing that it is not controlled by the long wavelength component of the disorder. Instead, the amoun…
We study the superconducting instability in disordered non-centrosymmetric monolayers with intrinsic Ising spin-orbit coupling (SOC) subjected to an in-plane Zeeman magnetic field. The pairing interaction contains the channels allowed by crystal symmetry, such that in general, the pairing state is a mixture of singlet and triplet Cooper pairs. The joint action of SOC and Zeeman field selects a specific in-plane $\mathbf{d}$-vector triplet component to couple with the singlets, which gains robustness against disorder through the coupling. The out-of-plane $\mathbf{d}$-vector component, that in …
We identify three-dimensional higher-order superconductors characterized by the coexistence of one-dimensional Majorana hinge states and gapless surface sates. We show how such superconductors can be obtained starting from the model of a spinful quadrupolar semimetal with two orbitals and adding an s-wave superconducting pairing term. By considering all the possible s-wave pairings satisfying Fermi-Dirac statistics we obtain six different superconducting models. We find that for two of these models a flat-band of hinge Majorana states coexist with surface states, and that these models have a n…
We numerically study the interplay between superconductivity and disorder on the graphene honeycomb lattice with on-site Hubbard attractive interactions U using a spatially inhomogeneous self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) approach. In the absence of disorder there are two phases at charge neutrality. Below a critical value Uc for attractive interactions there is a Dirac semimetal phase and above it there is a superconducting phase. We add scalar potential disorder to the system, while remaining at charge neutrality on average. Numerical solution of the BdG equations suggests that while…
We study the effect of disorder on massless, spinful Dirac fermions in two spatial dimensions with attractive interactions, and show that the combination of disorder and attractive interactions is deadly to the Dirac semimetal phase. First, we derive the zero temperature phase diagram of a clean Dirac fermion system with tunable doping level (μ) and attraction strength (g). We show that it contains two phases: a superconductor and a Dirac semimetal. Then, we show that arbitrarily weak disorder destroys the Dirac semimetal, turning it into a superconductor. We discuss the strength of the superc…
When light is incident on a medium with spatially disordered index of refraction, interference effects lead to near-perfect reflection when the number of dielectric interfaces is large, so that the medium becomes a "transparent mirror." We investigate the analog of this effect for electrons in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), for which local fluctuations of the twist angle give rise to a spatially random Fermi velocity. In a description that includes only spatial variation of Fermi velocity, we derive the incident-angle-dependent localization length for the case of quasi-one-dimensional disorde…
Recently, a concept of orthogonal metal has been introduced to reinterpret the disordered state of slave-spin representation in the Hubbard model as an exotic gapped metallic state. We have extended this concept to study the slave-spin representation of Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice.[Phys. Rev. B \textbf{86}, 165134 (2012)] It is found that a novel gapped metallic state coined orthogonal Dirac semimetal is identified. Such state corresponds to the disordered phase of slave-spin and has the same thermal-dynamical and transport properties as Dirac semimetal but its singe-particle excita…
Trilayer graphene in the fractional Quantum Hall Effect regime displays a set of unique interaction-induced transitions that can be tuned entirely by the applied bias voltage. These transitions occur near the anti-crossing points of two Landau levels. In a large magnetic field ($> 8$ T) the electron-electron interactions close the anti-crossing gap, resulting in some unusual transitions between different Landau levels. For the filling factor $ν=\frac23$, these transitions are accompanied by a change of spin polarization of the ground state. For a small Zeeman energy, this provides an unique op…
The ratio of the Zeeman splitting to the cyclotron energy ($M=ΔE_Z / \hbar ω_c$), which characterizes the relative strength of the spin-orbit interaction in crystals, is examined for the narrow gap IV-VI semiconductors PbTe, SnTe, and their alloy Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te on the basis of the multiband $k\cdot p$ theory. The inverse mass $α$, the g-factor $g$, and $M$ are calculated numerically by employing the relativistic empirical tight-binding band calculation. On the other hand, a simple but exact formula of $M$ is obtained for the six-band model based on the group theoretical analysis. It is sho…
The Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band. Its covariance is established with general proper and improper Lorentz transformations. In the non-relativistic limit, the kinetic and Zeeman energy terms of the Hamiltonian are both determined by the same three effective masses, and the quantum spin Hall effect is derived. This has important consequences for magnetic measurements of many classes of clean anisotropic semiconductors, metals, and superconductors. The Zeeman energy is vanishingly small for magnetic fields parallel to cle…
We theoretically study an ultra-cold gas of spin-1 polar bosons in a one dimensional continuum which are subject to linear and quadratic Zeeman fields and a Raman induced spin-orbit coupling. Concentrating on the regime in which the background fields can be treated perturbatively we analytically solve the model in its low-energy sector, i.e. we characterize the relevant phases and the quantum phase transitions between them. Depending on the sign of the effective quadratic Zeeman field $ε$, two superfluid phases with distinct nematic order appear. In addition, we uncover a spin-disordered super…
