Trilayer graphene in the fractional Quantum Hall Effect regime displays a set of unique interaction-induced transitions that can be tuned entirely by the applied bias voltage. These transitions occur near the anti-crossing points of two Landau levels. In a large magnetic field ($> 8$ T) the electron-electron interactions close the anti-crossing gap, resulting in some unusual transitions between different Landau levels. For the filling factor $ν=\frac23$, these transitions are accompanied by a change of spin polarization of the ground state. For a small Zeeman energy, this provides an unique opportunity to control the spin polarization of the ground state by fine tuning the bias voltage.
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of valley populations in the valence bands of trilayer WSe$_2$. Shubnikov$-$de Haas oscillations show that trilayer holes populate two distinct subbands associated with the $K$ and $Γ$ valleys, with effective masses 0.5$m_e$ and $1.2m_e$, respectively; $m_e$ is the bare electron mass. At a fixed total hole density, an applied transverse electric field transfers holes from $Γ$ orbitals to $K$ orbitals. We are able to explain this behavior in terms of the larger layer polarizability of the $K$ orbital subband.
Trilayer graphene is receiving an increasing level of attention due to its stacking--dependent magnetoelectric and optoelectric properties, and its more robust ferromagnetism relative to monolayer and bilayer variants. Additionally, rhombohedral stacked trilayer graphene presents the possibility of easily opening a gap via either an external electric field perpendicular to the layers, or via the application of external strain. In this paper, we consider an external electric field to open a bandgap in rhombohedral trilayer graphene and study the excitonic optical response of the system. This is…
Understanding and tuning correlated states is of great interest and significance to modern condensed matter physics. The recent discovery of unconventional superconductivity and Mott-like insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) presents a unique platform to study correlation phenomena, in which the Coulomb energy dominates over the quenched kinetic energy as a result of hybridized flat bands. Extending this approach to the case of twisted multilayer graphene would allow even higher control over the band structure because of the reduced symmetry of the system. Here, we …
We study a single electron transistor (SET) based upon a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot doped with a single Mn ion. We present evidence that this system behaves like a quantum nanomagnet whose total spin and magnetic anisotropy depend dramatically both on the number of carriers and their orbital nature. Thereby, the magnetic properties of the nanomagnet can be controlled electrically. Conversely, the electrical properties of this SET depend on the quantum state of the Mn spin, giving rise to spin-dependent charging energies and hysteresis in the Coulomb blockade oscillations of the linear con…
We construct a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of three graphene layers stacked with alternating twisting angles $\pmθ$. At the average twist angle $θ\sim 1.56^{\circ}$, a theoretically predicted magic angle for the formation of flat electron bands, narrow conduction and valence moiré bands appear together with a linearly dispersing Dirac band. Upon doping the half-filled moiré valence band with holes, or the half-filled moiré conduction band with electrons, displacement field tunable superconductivity emerges, reaching a maximum critical temperature of 2.1 K at optimal doping and dis…
Twisted van der Waals materials have been shown to host a variety of tunable electronic structures. Here we put forward twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) as a platform to emulate heavy fermion physics. We demonstrate that TTG hosts extended and localized modes with an electronic structure that can be controlled by interlayer bias. In the presence of interactions, the existence of localized modes leads to the development of local moments, which are Kondo coupled to coexisting extended states. By electrically controlling the effective exchange between local moments, the system can be driven from a…
Mott insulator plays a central role in strongly correlated physics, where the repulsive Coulomb interaction dominates over the electron kinetic energy and leads to insulating states with one electron occupying each unit cell. Doped Mott insulator is often described by the Hubbard model3, which can give rise to other correlated phenomena such as unusual magnetism and even high-temperature superconductivity. A tunable Mott insulator, where the competition between the Coulomb interaction and the kinetic energy can be varied in situ, can provide an invaluable model system for the study of Mott phy…
Moiré superlattices have recently emerged as a novel platform where correlated physics and superconductivity can be studied with unprecedented tunability. Although correlated effects have been observed in several other moiré systems, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) remains the only one where robust superconductivity has been reproducibly measured. Here we realize a new moiré superconductor, mirror symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) with dramatically richer tunability in electronic structure and superconducting properties. Hall effect and quantum oscillations m…

Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable …
Twisted graphene bilayers provide a versatile platform to engineer metamaterials with novel emergent properties by exploiting the resulting geometric moiré superlattice. Such superlattices are known to host bulk valley currents at tiny angles ($α\approx 0.3 ^\circ$) and flat bands at magic angles ($α\approx 1^\circ$). We show that tuning the twist angle to $α^*\approx 0.8^\circ$ generates flat bands away from charge neutrality with a triangular superlattice periodicity. When doped with $\pm 6$ electrons per moiré cell, these bands are half-filled and electronic interactions produce a symmetry-…
Understanding the mechanism of high temperature (high Tc) superconductivity is a central problem in condensed matter physics. It is often speculated that high Tc superconductivity arises from a doped Mott insulator as described by the Hubbard model. An exact solution of the Hubbard model, however, is extremely challenging due to the strong electron-electron correlation. Therefore, it is highly desirable to experimentally study a model Hubbard system in which the unconventional superconductivity can be continuously tuned by varying the Hubbard parameters. Here we report signatures of tunable su…
We study a quantum dot coupled to two edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator through electron tunnelings in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbital interaction induced by an external electric field. We show that if the electron interactions on the edge states are repulsive, there are two possible phases, depending on the Luttinger liquid parameter $K$. For $1/2<K<1$, the low-temperature physics is controlled by a previously identified two-channel Kondo fixed point. For the edge states with even stronger repulsive interactions, i.e. $1/4<K<1/2$, the system reaches another phase at low tempe…

Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…
We study theoretically a moiré superlattice geometry consisting of mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene surrounded by identical transition metal dichalcogenide layers. We show that this setup allows to switch on/off and control the spin-orbit splitting of the Fermi surfaces via application of a perpendicular displacement field $D_0$, and explore two manifestations of this control: first, we compute the evolution of superconducting pairing with $D_0$; this features a complex admixture of singlet and triplet pairing and, depending on the pairing state in the parent trilayer system, phase t…
Recent realizations of intrinsic magnetic order in truly two-dimensional materials have opened new avenues in the fundamental knowledge and spintronic applications. Here we develop an anisotropic Heisenberg model with relativistic exchange interactions that are obtained from the first-principles calculations. We demonstrate the crucial importance of magnetic interactions beyond the first-neighbour to qualitatively and quantitatively reproduce the experimental results. Once we ascertain the predictive capacity of the model for chromium trihalides and CrGeTe$_3$, we investigate the feasibility o…
We engineer quantum anomalous Hall effect in silicene via doping 3d transition metals. We show that there exists a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect in Vanadium doped silicene using both analytical model and Wannier interpolation. We also predict the quantum valley Hall effect and electrically tunable topological states could be realized in certain transition metal doped silicene where the energy band inversion occurs. Our finding provides new scheme for the realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect and platform for electrically controllable topological states.
A concept of an electrically tunable resonance detector of THz-frequency signals based on antiferromagnetic/heavy metal (AFM/HM) hetero-structure is proposed. The conversion of a THz-frequency input signal into DC voltage is done using the inverse spin Hall effect in an (AFM/HM) bilayer. An additional bias DC current in the HM layer can be used to vary the effective anisotropy of the AFM, and, therefore, to tune the AFMR frequency. The proposed AFM/HM hetero-structure works as a resonance-type quadratic detector which can be tuned by the bias current in the range of at least 10 percent of the …
The helimagnetic order describes a non-collinear spin texture of antiferromagnets, arising from competing exchange interactions. Although collinear antiferromagnets are elemental building blocks of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, the potential of implementing spintronic functionality in non-collinear antiferromagnets has not been clarified thus far. Here, we propose an AFM helimagnet of EuCo2As2 as a novel single-phase spintronic material that exhibits a remarkable sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The contrast in the AMR arises from two electrically distinctive magnet…
In the quantum anomalous Hall effect, chiral edge modes are expected to conduct spin polarized current without dissipation and thus hold great promise for future electronics and spintronics with low energy consumption. However, spin polarization of chiral edge modes has never been established in experiments. In this work, we theoretically study spin polarization of chiral edge modes in the quantum anomalous Hall effect, based on both the effective model and more realistic tight-binding model constructed from the first principles calculations. We find that spin polarization can be manipulated b…
The interest in two-dimensional and layered materials continues to expand, driven by the compelling properties of individual atomic layers that can be stacked and/or twisted into synthetic heterostructures. The plethora of electronic properties as well as the emergence of many different quasiparticles, including plasmons, polaritons, trions and excitons with large, tunable binding energies that all can be controlled and modulated through electrical means has given rise to many device applications. In addition, these materials exhibit both room-temperature spin and valley polarization, magnetis…
Motivated by the recently experimental reported signatures of the tunable Mott insulating state and superconductivity in an ABC graphene trilayer superlattice, we investigate the charge compressibility, the spin correlation, and the superconducting instability within the Hubbard model on a three-layer honeycomb lattice. It is found that an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator emerges beyond a critical $U_c$ at half-filling, and the electronic correlation drives a $d+id$ superconducting pairing to be dominant over other pairing patterns in a wide doped region. The effective pairing inte…
The capability to switch electrically between superconducting and insulating states of matter represents a novel paradigm in the state-of-the-art engineering of correlated electronic systems. An exciting possibility is to turn on superconductivity in a topologically non-trivial insulator, which provides a route to search for non-Abelian topological states. However, existing demonstrations of superconductor-insulator switches have involved only topologically trivial systems, and even those are rare due to the stringent requirement to tune the carrier density over a wide range. Here we report re…
