Let $S= \{ a_{1}, a_{2}, \dots, a_{n} \}$ be a finite set of non-zero integers. In \cite{KBAM21}, Karthick Babu and Anirban Mukhopadhyay calculated the explicit structure of the Galois group of multi-quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a_{1}}, \sqrt{a_{2}}, \dots, \sqrt{a_{n}})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. For a positive integer $d \geq 3$, $ζ_{d}$ denotes the primitive $d$-th root of unity. In this paper, we calculate the explicit structure of the Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a_{1}}, \sqrt{a_{2}}, \dots, \sqrt{a_{n}}, ζ_{d})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of its action on $ζ_{d}$ and $\sqrt{a_{i}}$ for $1 \leq i \leq n$.
We define invariants $\operatorname{inv}_1,\dots,\operatorname{inv}_m$ of Galois extensions of number fields with a fixed Galois group. Then, we propose a heuristic in the spirit of Malle's conjecture which asymptotically predicts the number of extensions that satisfy $\operatorname{inv}_i\leq X_i$ for all $X_i$. The resulting conjecture is proved for abelian Galois groups. We also describe refined Artin conductors that carry essentially the same information as the invariants $\operatorname{inv}_1,\dots,\operatorname{inv}_m$.
We show that there are at most $O_{n,ε}(H^{n-2+\sqrt{2}+ε})$ monic integer polynomials of degree $n$ having height at most $H$ and Galois group different from the full symmetric group $S_n$, improving on the previous 1973 world record $O_{n}(H^{n-1/2}\log H)$.
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field of discriminant $d_K$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$. When $K$ is different from $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$, we consider a certain specific model for the elliptic curve $E_K$ with $j(E_K)=j(\mathcal{O}_K)$ which is defined over $\mathbb{Q}(j(E_K))$. In this paper, for each positive integer $N$ we compare the extension field of $\mathbb{Q}$ generated by the coordinates of $N$-torsion points on $E_K$ with the ray class field $K_{(N)}$ of $K$ modulo $N\mathcal{O}_K$. By using this result we investigate the image of a $p$-adic…
The $p$-group generation algorithm from computational group theory is used to obtain information about large quotients of the pro-2 group $G = \text{Gal} (k^{nr,2}/k)$ for $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ with $d = -445, -1015, -1595, -2379$. In each case we are able to narrow the identity of $G$ down to one of a finite number of explicitly given finite groups. From this follow several results regarding the corresponding 2-class tower. This is a revised version of ANT-0302.
The main purpose of this paper is to extend results on isomorphism types of the abelianized absolute Galois group $\mathcal G_K^{ab}$, where $K$ denotes imaginary quadratic field. In particular, we will show that if the class number $h_K$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ different from $\mathbb Q(i)$, $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-2})$ is a fixed prime number $p$ then there are only two isomorphism types of $\mathcal G_K^{ab}$ which could occur. For instance, this result implies that imaginary quadratic fields of the discriminant $D_K$ belonging to the set $\{-35, -51, -91, -115, -123, -187, -235,$ $ -…
We use Galois cohomology to study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbf{Q}(N^{1/p})$, where $N \equiv 1 \bmod{p}$ is prime. We prove a partial converse to a theorem of Calegari--Emerton, and provide a new explanation of the known counterexamples to the full converse of their result. In the case $p = 5$, we prove a complete characterization of the $5$-rank of the class group of $\mathbf{Q}(N^{1/5})$ in terms of whether or not $\prod_{k=1}^{(N-1)/2} k^{k}$ and $\frac{\sqrt{5} - 1}{2}$ are $5$th powers mod $N$.
Let $n\ge 3$ be an odd natural number. In 1738, Abraham de Moivre introduced a family of polynomials of degree $n$ with rational coefficients, all of which are solvable. So far, the Galois groups of these polynomials have been investigated only for prime numbers $n$ and under special assumptions. We describe the Galois groups for arbitrary odd $n\ge 3$ in the irreducible case, up to few exceptions. In addition, we express all zeros of such a polynomial as rational functions of three zeros, two of which are connected in a certain sense. These results are based on the reduction of the radical $$…
Barrucand and Cohn's theory of principal factorizations in pure cubic fields \(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{D})\) and their Galois closures \(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_3,\sqrt[3]{D})\) with \(3\) types is generalized to pure quintic fields \(L=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[5]{D})\) and pure metacyclic fields \(N=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_5,\sqrt[5]{D})\) with \(13\) possible types. The classification is based on the Galois cohomology of the unit group \(U_N\), viewed as a module over the automorphism group \(\mathrm{Gal}(N/K)\) of \(N\) over the cyclotomic field \(K=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_5)\), by making use of theorems by Hasse and Iwasawa on the He…
The power classes of a field are well-known for their ability to parameterize elementary $p$-abelian Galois extensions. These classical objects have recently been reexamined through the lens of their Galois module structure. Module decompositions have been computed in several cases, providing deep new insight into absolute Galois groups. The surprising result in each case is that there are far fewer isomorphism types of indecomposables than one would expect generically, with summands predominately free over associated quotient rings. Though non-free summands are the exception both in their for…
Let $d$ be a square-free integer, $\mathbf{k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt d,\,i)$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$. Let $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ be the Hilbert $2$-class field of $\mathbf{k}$, $\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}$ be the Hilbert $2$-class field of $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ and $G=\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}/\mathbf{k})$ be the Galois group of $\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}/\mathbf{k}$. Our goal is to give necessary and sufficient conditions to have $G$ metacyclic in the case where $d=pq$, with $p$ and $q$ are primes such that $p\equiv 1\pmod 8$ and $q\equiv 5\pmod 8$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 8$ and $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$.
Fix an integer $d>0$. In 2008, David and Weston showed that, on average, an elliptic curve over $\mathbf{Q}$ picks up a nontrivial $p$-torsion point defined over a finite extension $K$ of the $p$-adics of degree at most $d$ for only finitely many primes $p$. This paper proves an analogous averaging result for principally polarized abelian surfaces over $\mathbf{Q}$ with real multiplication by $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and a level-$\sqrt{5}$ structure. Furthermore, we indicate how the result on abelian surfaces with real multiplication by $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ relates to the deformation theory of…
Let $p_1 \equiv p_2 \equiv5\pmod8$ be different primes. Put $i=\sqrt{-1}$ and $d=2p_1p_2$, then the bicyclic biquadratic field $k=Q(\sqrt{d}, \sqrt{-1})$ has an elementary abelian 2-class group of rank $3$. In this paper we determine the nilpotency class, the coclass, the generators and the structure of the non-abelian Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(k_2^{(2)}/k)$ of the second Hilbert 2-class field $k_2^{(2)}$ of $k$. We study the capitulation problem of the 2-classes of $k$ in its seven unramified quadratic extensions $K_i$ and in its seven unramified bicyclic biquadratic extensions $L_i$.
Let $K$ be an algebraic number field with ring of integers $\Cal{O}_{K}$, $p>2$ be a rational prime and $G$ be the cyclic group of order $p $. Let $Λ$ denote the order $\Cal{O}_{K}[G].$ Let $Cl(Λ)$ denote the locally free class group of $Λ$ and $D(Λ)$ the kernel group, the subgroup of $Cl(Λ)$ consisting of classes that become trivial upon extension of scalars to the maximal order. If $p$ is unramified in $K$, then $D(Λ) = T(Λ)$, where $T(Λ)$ is the Swan subgroup of $Cl(Λ).$ This yields upper and lower bounds for $D(Λ)$. Let $R(Λ)$ denote the subgroup of $Cl(Λ)$ consisting of those classes real…
For an odd prime $p$ and polynomial $P(T)$, we consider the extension $F$ of $k={\mathbb F}_p(T)$ defined by adjoining a root of $x^p+Tx-P(T)$. Such a field is a function field analogue of the number field ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt[p]{n})$. We prove two theorems about the Galois closure $L$ of $F$: that its degree-0 divisor class group is $A^{p-1}$ for some group $A$, and that its class number is the $(p-1)$-st power of the class number of $F$, in analogy with results of R. Schoof and T. Honda for number fields.
We study totally positive, additively indecomposable integers in a real quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$. We estimate the size of the norm of an indecomposable integer by expressing it as a power series in $u_i^{-1}$, where $\sqrt D$ has the periodic continued fraction expansion $[u_0, u_1, u_2, \dots, u_{s-1}, 2u_0, u_1, u_2, \dots]$. This enables us to disprove a conjecture of Jang-Kim [JK] concerning the maximal size of the norm of an indecomposable integer.
We construct a random model to study the distribution of class numbers in special families of real quadratic fields $\mathbb Q(\sqrt d)$ arising from continued fractions. These families are obtained by considering periodic continued fraction expansions of the form $\sqrt {D(n)}=[f(n), [u_1, u_2, \dots, u_{s-1}, 2f(n)]]$ with fixed coefficients $u_1, \dots, u_{s-1}$ and generalize well-known families such as Chowla's $4n^2+1$, for which analogous results were recently proved by Dahl and Lamzouri.
In the article [PV] a general procedure to study solutions of the equations $x^4-dy^2=z^p$ was presented for negative values of $d$. The purpose of the resent article is to extend our previous results to positive values of $d$. On doing so, we give a description of the extension $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d},\sqrtε)/\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ (where $ε$ is a fundamental unit) needed to prove the existence of a Hecke character over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ with prescribed local conditions. We also extend some "large image" results due to Ellenberg regarding images of Galois representations coming from $\mathbb…
Given a set $S=\{x^2+c_1,\dots,x^2+c_s\}$ defined over a field and an infinite sequence $γ$ of elements of $S$, one can associate an arboreal representation to $γ$, generalizing the case of iterating a single polynomial. We study the probability that a random sequence $γ$ produces a ``large-image'' representation, meaning that infinitely many subquotients in the natural filtration are maximal. We prove that this probability is positive for most sets $S$ defined over $\mathbb{Z}[t]$, and we conjecture a similar positive-probability result for suitable sets over $\mathbb{Q}$. As an application o…
Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p\equiv 1$ mod $8$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$. Let $\mathbf{k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2p}, i)$, $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ be the Hilbert $2$-class field of $\mathbf{k}$, $\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}$ be the Hilbert $2$-class field of $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ and $G=\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}/\mathbf{k})$ be the Galois group of $\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}/\mathbf{k}$. Suppose that the $2$-part, $C_{\mathbf{k}, 2}$, of the class group of $\mathbf{k}$ is of type $(2, 4)$; then $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ contains six extensions $\mathbf{K_{i, j}}/\mathbf{k}$, $i=1, 2, 3$ and $j=2, 4$. Our goal is to st…
By making use of our generalization of Barrucand and Cohn's theory of principal factorizations in pure cubic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{D})$ and their Galois closures $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_3,\sqrt[3]{D})$ with 3 possible types to pure quintic fields $L=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[5]{D})$ and their pure metacyclic normal fields $N=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_5,\sqrt[5]{D})$ with 13 possible types, we compile an extensive database with arithmetical invariants of the 900 pairwise non-isomorphic fields $N$ having normalized radicands in the range $2\le D<10^3$. Our classification is based on the Galois cohomology of the unit grou…
Suppose $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_1\dotsm p_t})$ is an imaginary quadratic number field with distinct primes $p_1,\dots,p_{t}$, where $p_i\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ ($i=1,\dots,t-1$) and $p_t\equiv 3\pmod{4}$. We express the possible values of the 8-rank $r_8$ of the class group of $F$ in terms of a quadratic form $Q$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ which is defined by quartic symbols. In particular, we show that $r_8$ is bounded by the isotropy index of $Q$.
Let $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv -q\equiv1 \pmod4$ be different primes such that $\displaystyle\left(\frac{2}{p_1}\right)= \displaystyle\left(\frac{2}{p_2}\right)=\displaystyle\left(\frac{p_1}{q}\right)=\displaystyle\left(\frac{p_2}{q}\right)=-1$. Put $d=p_1p_2q$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$, then the bicyclic biquadratic field ${k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d},i)$ has an elementary abelian $2$-class group, $\mathbf{C}l_2(k)$, of rank $3$. In this paper, we study the principalization of the $2$-classes of ${k}$ in its fourteen unramified abelian extensions $\mathbb{K}_j$ and $\mathbb{L}_j$ within ${k}_2^{(1)}$, that is t…
The seminal papers in the field of root-discriminant bounds are those of Odlyzko and Martinet. Both papers include the question of whether the field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-5460})$ has finite or infinite $2$-class tower. This is a critical case that will either substantially lower the best known upper bound for lim inf of root-discriminants (if infinite) or else give a counter-example to what is often termed Martinet's conjecture or question (if finite). Using extensive computation and introducing some new techniques, we give strong evidence that the tower is in fact finite, establishing other prop…
Cyclic, ramified extensions $L/K$ of degree $p$ of local fields with residue characteristic $p$ are fairly well understood. Unless $\mbox{char}(K)=0$ and $L=K(\sqrt[p]{π_K})$ for some prime element $π_K\in K$, they are defined by an Artin-Schreier equation. Additionally, through the work of Ferton, Aiba, de Smit and Thomas, and others, much is known about their Galois module structure of ideals, the structure of each ideal $\mathfrak{P}_L^n$ as a module over its associated order $\mathfrak{A}_{K[G]}(n)=\{x\in K[G]:x\mathfrak{P}_L^n\subseteq \mathfrak{P}_L^n\}$ where $G=\mbox{Gal}(L/K)$. This p…
Given positive integers $j,k$, with $j\geq 2$, we show that there are positive integers $d,e$ such that $\sqrt{d}$ has continued fraction expansion $\sqrt{d}=[e,\overline{k,\dots,k,2e}]$, with period $j$, if and only if $k$ is even or $3\nmid j$, in which case we give closed formulae to find all such $d,e$ as well as the smallest solution in positive integers to the Fermat-Pell equation $X^2-dY^2=(-1)^j$.
For $x\geq 3$, we define $w(x)$ as the highest integer $w$ for which there exist integers $m, y\geq 1$ and $1\leq n_1<\dots<n_m\leq x$ such that $n_1\cdots n_m=y^w$. We show that \[w(x)=x\exp\big(-(\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{\log x\log\log x}\big).\]
Let $p$ be an odd prime, $N$ a square-free odd positive integer prime to $p$, $π$ a $p$-ordinary cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GSp}_4(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ of principal level $N$ and Iwahori level at $p$. Using a $p$-integral version of Rallis inner product formula and modularity theorems for $\mathrm{GSp}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{U}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$, we establish an identity between the $p$-part of the critical value at $1$ of the degree $5$ $L$-function of $π$ twisted by the non-trivial quadratic Dirichlet character $ξ$ associated to the exten…
Let p be a prime number and M a quadratic number field, M not equal to Q(\sqrt{p}) if p is congruent to 1 modulo 4. We will prove that for any positive integer d there exists a Galois extension F/Q with Galois group D_{2p} and an elliptic curve E/Q such that F contains M and the p-Selmer group of E/F has size at least p^d.
Recently, motivated by Stanley sequences, Kiss, S\' andor and Yang introduced a new type sequence: a sequence $A$ of nonnegative integers is called an $AP_k$ - covering sequence if there exists an integer $n_0$ such that if $n > n_0$, then there exist $a_1\in A, \dots , a_{k-1}\in A$, $a_1<a_2<\cdots <a_{k-1}<n$ such that $a_1, \dots , a_{k-1}, n$ form a $k$-term arithmetic progression. They prove that there exists an $AP_3$ - covering sequence $A$ such that $\limsup\limits_{n\to\infty}{A(n)}/{\sqrt n}\le 34$. In this note, we prove that there exists an $AP_3$ - covering sequence $A$ such that…
Using modularity, level lowering, and explicit computations with Hilbert modular forms, Galois representations and ray class groups, we show that for $3 \le d \le 23$ squarefree, $d \ne 5$, $17$, the Fermat equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$ has no non-trivial solutions over the quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for $n \ge 4$. Furthermore, we show for $d=17$ that the same holds for prime exponents $n \equiv 3$, $5 \pmod{8}$.
For an infinite family of monogenic trinomials $P(X) = X^3\pm 3rbX-b$ in $\mathbb{Z}\lbrack X\rbrack$, arithmetical invariants of the cubic number field $L = \mathbb{Q}(θ)$, generated by a zero $θ$ of $P(X)$, and of its Galois closure $N = L(\sqrt{d(L)})$ are determined. The conductor $f$ of the cyclic cubic relative extension $N/K$, where $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d(L)})$ denotes the unique quadratic subfield of $N$, is proved to be of the form $3^eb$ with $e\in\lbrace 1,2\rbrace$, which admits statements concerning primitive ambiguous principal ideals, lattice minima, and independent units in $L…
For every positive integer N and every $α\in [0,1)$, let $B(N, α)$ denote the probabilistic model in which a random set $A\subset \{1,\dots,N\}$ is constructed by choosing independently every element of $\{1,\dots,N\}$ with probability $α$. We prove that, as $N\longrightarrow +\infty$, for every $A$ in $B(N, α)$ we have $|AA|\ \sim |A|^2/2$ with probability $1-o(1)$, if and only if $$\frac{\log(α^2(\log N)^{\log 4-1})}{\sqrt{\log\log N}}\longrightarrow-\infty.$$ This improves a theorem of Cilleruelo, Ramana and Ramaré, who proved the above asymptotic between $|AA|$ and $|A|^2/2$ when $α=o(1/\s…
In 2016, in the work related to Galois representations, Greenberg conjectured the existence of multi-quadratic $p$-rational number fields of degree $2^{t}$ for any odd prime number $p$ and any integer $t \geq 1$. Using the criteria provided by him to check $p$-rationality for abelian number fields, certain infinite families of quadratic, biquadratic and triquadratic $p$-rational fields have been shown to exist in recent years. In this article, for any integer $k \geq 1$, we build upon the existing work and prove the existence of infinitely many prime numbers $p$ for which the imaginary quadrat…
Let $A = \{a_{1},a_{2},\dots{}\}$ $(a_{1} < a_{2} < \dots{})$ be an infinite sequence of nonnegative integers, and let $R_{A,2}(n)$ denote the number of solutions of $a_{x}+a_{y}=n$ $(a_{x},a_{y}\in A)$. P. Erdős, A. Sárközy and V. T. Sós proved that if $\lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{B(A,N)}{\sqrt{N}}=+\infty$ then $|Δ_{1}(R_{A,2}(n))|$ cannot be bounded, where $B(A,N)$ denotes the number of blocks formed by consecutive integers in $A$ up to $N$ and $Δ_{l}$ denotes the $l$-th difference. Their result was extended to $Δ_{l}(R_{A,2}(n))$ for any fixed $l\ge2$. In this paper we give further generalizati…
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field different from $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$. For a positive integer $N$, let $K_\mathfrak{n}$ be the ray class field of $K$ modulo $\mathfrak{n}=N\mathcal{O}_K$. By using the congruence subgroup $\pmΓ_1(N)$, we construct an extended form class group whose operation is basically the Dirichlet composition, and explicitly show that this group is isomorphic to the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(K_\mathfrak{n}/K)$. We also present algorithms to find all form classes and show how to multiply two form classes. As an application, we describe $…
For any prime $p$, let $y(p)$ denote the smallest integer $y$ such that every reduced residue class $\pmod p$ is represented by the product of some subset of $\{1,\dots,y\}$. It is easy to see that $y(p)$ is at least as large as the smallest quadratic nonresidue $\pmod p$; we prove that $y(p) \ll_\varepsilon p^{1/(4 \sqrt e)+\varepsilon}$, thus strengthening Burgess's classical result. This result is of intermediate strength between two other results, namely Burthe's proof that the multiplicative group $\pmod p$ is generated by the integers up to $O_\varepsilon(p^{1/(4 \sqrt e)+\varepsilon}$, …
For a finite group $G$, let $K(G)$ denote the field generated over $\mathbb{Q}$ by its character values. For $n>24$, G. R. Robinson and J. G. Thompson proved that $$K(A_n)=\mathbb{Q}\left (\{ \sqrt{p^*} \ : \ p\leq n \ {\text{ an odd prime with } p\neq n-2}\}\right),$$ where $p^*:=(-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}p$. Confirming a speculation of Thompson, we show that arbitrary suitable multiquadratic fields are similarly generated by the values of $A_n$-characters restricted to elements whose orders are only divisible by ramified primes. To be more precise, we say that a $π$-number is a positive integer wh…
A pro-$p$ group $G$ is called strongly Frattini-resistant if the function $H \mapsto Φ(H)$, from the poset of all closed subgroups of $G$ into itself, is a poset embedding. Frattini-resistant pro-$p$ groups appear naturally in Galois theory. Indeed, every maximal pro-$p$ Galois group over a field that contains a primitive $p$th root of unity (and also contains $\sqrt{-1}$ if $p=2$) is strongly Frattini-resistant. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be non-trivial pro-$p$ groups. We prove that $G_1 \times G_2$ is strongly Frattini-resistant if and only if one of the direct factors $G_1$ or $G_2$ is torsion-fre…
We investigate the isogeny graphs of supersingular elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ equipped with a $d$-isogeny to their Galois conjugate. These curves are interesting because they are, in a sense, a generalization of curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$, and there is an action of the ideal class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-dp})$ on the isogeny graphs. We investigate constructive and destructive aspects of these graphs in isogeny-based cryptography, including generalizations of the CSIDH cryptosystem and the Delfs-Galbraith algorithm.
