For an odd prime $p$ and polynomial $P(T)$, we consider the extension $F$ of $k={\mathbb F}_p(T)$ defined by adjoining a root of $x^p+Tx-P(T)$. Such a field is a function field analogue of the number field ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt[p]{n})$. We prove two theorems about the Galois closure $L$ of $F$: that its degree-0 divisor class group is $A^{p-1}$ for some group $A$, and that its class number is the $(p-1)$-st power of the class number of $F$, in analogy with results of R. Schoof and T. Honda for number fields.

We prove a conjecture of Northshield by determining the maximal order of his analogue of Stern's sequence for $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$. In particular, if $b$ is Northshield's analogue, we prove that $$\limsup_{n\to\infty}\frac{2b(n)}{(2n)^{\log_3 (\sqrt{2}+1)}}=1.$$
Michael Knapp, in a previous work, conjectured that every additive sextic form over $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})$ in seven variables has a nontrivial zero. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is true, establishing that $Γ^*(6, \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1})) = Γ^*(6, \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})) = 7 $.
Let $S= \{ a_{1}, a_{2}, \dots, a_{n} \}$ be a finite set of non-zero integers. In \cite{KBAM21}, Karthick Babu and Anirban Mukhopadhyay calculated the explicit structure of the Galois group of multi-quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a_{1}}, \sqrt{a_{2}}, \dots, \sqrt{a_{n}})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. For a positive integer $d \geq 3$, $ζ_{d}$ denotes the primitive $d$-th root of unity. In this paper, we calculate the explicit structure of the Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a_{1}}, \sqrt{a_{2}}, \dots, \sqrt{a_{n}}, ζ_{d})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of its action on $ζ_{d}$ and $\sqrt{a_{i}}$ fo…
We use Borcherds products and their restrictions to Hirzebruch-Zagier curves to determine generators and relations for the graded rings of Hilbert modular forms for the fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{29})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{37})$. These seem to be the first cases where the graded ring can be computed despite obstructions to the existence of Borcherds products with arbitrary divisors.
For any odd prime $p,$ we construct an infinite family of pairs of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}),\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ whose class numbers are both divisible by $p.$ One of our theorems settles Iizuka's conjecture for the case $n=1$ and $p >2.$
Let $d \in \{-4, -8, 8\}$. We study the $8$-part of the narrow class group in the thin families of quadratic number fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{dpq})$, where $p\equiv q \equiv 1\bmod 4$ are prime numbers, and we prove new lower bounds for the proportion of narrow class groups in these families that have an element of order $8$. In the course of our proof, we prove a general double-oscillation estimate for the quadratic residue symbol in quadratic number fields.
We prove Fermat's Last Theorem over ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{17})$ for prime exponents $p \ge 5$ in certain congruence classes modulo $48$ by using a combination of the modular method and Brauer-Manin obstructions explicitly given by quadratic reciprocity constraints. The reciprocity constraint used to treat the case of ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{5})$ is a generalization to a real quadratic base field of the one used by Chen-Siksek. For the case of ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{17})$, this is insufficient, and we generalize a reciprocity constraint of Bennett-Chen-Dahmen-Yazdani using Hilbe…
The unit group and the 2-class number of some fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{pq}, \sqrt{ps})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{pq}, \sqrt{ps}, \sqrt{-\ell})$
The classical Grunwald--Wang theorem is an example of a local--global (or Hasse) principle stating that except in some special cases which are precisely determined, an element $m$ in a number field $\mathbb{K}$ is an $a$-th power in $\mathbb{K}$ if and only if it is an $a$-th power in the completion $\mathbb{K}_{v}$ for all but finitely many primes $v$ of $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we prove a Carlitz module analogue of the Grunwald--Wang theorem.
For a prime $p>3$, let $D$ be the discriminant of an imaginary quadratic order with $|D|< \frac{4}{\sqrt{3}}\sqrt{p}$. We research the solutions of the class polynomial $H_D(X)$ mod $p$ in $\mathbb{F}_p$ if $D$ is not a quadratic residue in $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also discuss the common roots of different class polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_p$. As a result, we get a deterministic algorithm (Algorithm 3) for computing the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$. The time complexity of Algorithm 3 is $O(p^{3/4+ε})$.
We compute an equation for a modular abelian surface $A$ that has everywhere good reduction over the quadratic field $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{61})$ and that does not admit a principal polarization over $K$.
We determine the $3$-class groups of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p})$ and $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p},\sqrt{-3})$ when $p\equiv 4,7\bmod 9$ is a prime and $3$ is a cubic modulo $p$. This confirms a conjecture made by Barrucand-Cohn, and proves the last remaining case of a conjecture of Lemmermeyer on the $3$-class group of $K$.
We show that the Diophantine pair $\{1, 3\}$ can not be extended to a Diophantine quintuple in $\mathbb{Z}\left[\sqrt{-2}\right]$. This result completes the work of the first author and establishes non-extensibility of the Diophantine pair $\{1, 3\}$ to a Diophantine quintuple in $\mathbb{Z}\left[\sqrt{-d}\right]$ for all $d\in \mathbb{N}$.
We investigate the class number one problem for a parametric family of real quadratic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}( \sqrt{m^2+4r})$ for certain positive integers $m$ and $r$.
Recently, a density result for the $16$-rank of $\text{Cl}(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p}))$ was established when $p$ varies among the prime numbers, assuming a short character sum conjecture. In this paper we prove the same density result unconditionally.
We study the capitulation of $2$-ideal classes of an infinite family of imaginary bicyclic biquadratic number fields consisting of fields $\mathbf{k} =\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p_1p_2q}, i)$, where $i=\sqrt{-1}$ and $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv-q\equiv1 \pmod 4$ are different primes. For each of the three quadratic extensions $\mathbf{K}/\mathbf{k}$ inside the absolute genus field $\mathbf{k}^{(*)}$ of $\mathbf{k}$, we compute the capitulation kernel of $\mathbf{K}/\mathbf{k}$. Then we deduce that each strongly ambiguous class of $\mathbf{k}/\mathbb{Q}(i)$ capitulates already in $\mathbf{k}^{(*)}$, which is sm…
We solve unconditionally the class number one problem for the $2$-parameter family of real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ with square-free discriminant $d=(an)^2+4a$ for positive odd integers $a$ and $n$.
For a given odd positive integer $n$ and an odd prime $p$, we construct an infinite family of quadruples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+4})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+4p^2})$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that the class number of each of them is divisible by $n$. Subsequently, we show that there is an infinite family of quintuples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+4})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+36})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+100})$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ whose class numb…
We use Vinogradov's method to prove equidistribution of a spin symbol governing the $16$-rank of class groups of quadratic number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2p})$, where $p \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ is a prime.
We determine the minimal number of variables $Γ^*(d, K)$ which guarantees a nontrivial solution for every additive form of degree $d=2m$, $m$ odd, $m \ge 3$ over the six ramified quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_2$. We prove that if $K$ is one of $\{\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{10}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-10})\}$, $Γ^*(d,K) = \frac{3}{2}d$, and if $K$ is one of $\{\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})\}$, $Γ^*(d,K) = d+1$. The case $d=6$ was previously known.
Let $\mathrm{k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{d},ζ_3)$, with $d$ a cube-free positive integer. Let $C_{\mathrm{k},3}$ be the $3$-component of the class group of $\mathrm{k}$. By the aid of genus theory, arithmetic proprieties of the pure cubic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{d})$ and some results on the $3$-class group $C_{\mathrm{k},3}$, we are moving towards the determination of all integers $d$ such that $C_{\mathrm{k},3} \simeq \mathbb{Z}/9\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$.
Let $d$ be a square-free integer, $\mathbf{k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt d,\,i)$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$. Let $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ be the Hilbert $2$-class field of $\mathbf{k}$, $\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}$ be the Hilbert $2$-class field of $\mathbf{k}_1^{(2)}$ and $G=\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}/\mathbf{k})$ be the Galois group of $\mathbf{k}_2^{(2)}/\mathbf{k}$. Our goal is to give necessary and sufficient conditions to have $G$ metacyclic in the case where $d=pq$, with $p$ and $q$ are primes such that $p\equiv 1\pmod 8$ and $q\equiv 5\pmod 8$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 8$ and $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$.
We prove results towards classifying the possible torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, where $0<d<100$ is a square-free integer, and obtain a complete classification for 49 out of 60 such fields. Over the remaining 11 quadratic fields, we cannot rule out the possibility of the group $\mathbb{Z}/16\mathbb{Z}$ appearing as a torsion group of an elliptic curve.
In 1971, Ruzsa conjectured that if $f:\ \mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}$ with $f(n+k)\equiv f(n)$ mod $k$ for every $n,k\in\mathbb{N}$ and $f(n)=O(θ^n)$ with $θ<e$ then $f$ is a polynomial. In this paper, we investigate the analogous problem for the ring of polynomials over a finite field.
For a prime $p\equiv 3$ $(\text{mod }4)$, let $h(-8p)$ and $h(8p)$ be the class numbers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2p})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2p})$, respectively. Let $Ψ(ξ)$ be the Hirzebruch sum of a quadratic irrational $ξ$. We show that $h(-8p)\equiv h(8p)\Big(Ψ(2\sqrt{2p})/3-Ψ\big((1+\sqrt{2p})/2\big)/3\Big)$ $(\text{mod }16)$. Also, we show that $h(-8p)\equiv 2h(8p)Ψ(2\sqrt{2p})/3$ $(\text{mod }8)$ if $p\equiv 3$ $(\text{mod }8)$, and $h(-8p)\equiv \big(2h(8p)Ψ(2\sqrt{2p})/3\big)+4$ $(\text{mod }8)$ if $p\equiv 7$ $(\text{mod }8)$.
Let $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv -q\equiv1 \pmod4$ be different primes such that $\displaystyle\left(\frac{2}{p_1}\right)= \displaystyle\left(\frac{2}{p_2}\right)=\displaystyle\left(\frac{p_1}{q}\right)=\displaystyle\left(\frac{p_2}{q}\right)=-1$. Put $d=p_1p_2q$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$, then the bicyclic biquadratic field ${k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d},i)$ has an elementary abelian $2$-class group, $\mathbf{C}l_2(k)$, of rank $3$. In this paper, we study the principalization of the $2$-classes of ${k}$ in its fourteen unramified abelian extensions $\mathbb{K}_j$ and $\mathbb{L}_j$ within ${k}_2^{(1)}$, that is t…
We construct the sequences of Fibonacci and Lucas at any quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}\ )$ with $d>0$ square free, noting in general that the properties remain valid as those given by the classical sequences of Fibonacci and Lucas for the case $d = 5$, under the respective variants. For this construction, we use the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}\ )$ and then we observe the generalizations for any unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}\ )$ where, under certain conditions, some of this constructions correspond to $k$-Fibonacci sequence for some $k\in \mathbb{N}$. Of course, for both sequ…
Suppose that $θ$ is irrational. Then almost all elements $ν\in {\mathbb Z}[θ]$ that may be written as a $k$-fold product of the shifted integers $n+θ$ $(n\in {\mathbb N})$ are thus represented essentially uniquely.
In this paper we show the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for a certain elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[4]{5})$ is equivalent to the same conjecture for a certain pair of hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 over $\mathbb{Q}$. We numerically verify the conjecture for these hyperelliptic curves. Moreover, we explain the methods used to find this example, which turned out to be a bit more subtle than expected.
Let $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 3$ be odd integers, and let $m\geq 0$ be any integer. For a prime number $\ell$, we prove that the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\ell^{2m}-2k^n})$ is either divisible by $n$ or by a specific divisor of $n$. Applying this result, we construct an infinite family of certain tuples of imaginary quadratic fields of the form $$\left(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{4d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+16}), \cdots, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4^t}) \right)$$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $1\leq 4^t\leq 2|d|…
We study the algebras of symmetric Hilbert modular forms of even weight for $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, considering them as modular forms for the orthogonal group of the lattice with signature (2,2). Comparing the volume of the corresponding symmetric domain with the volume of the Jacobian of the generators of these algebras, we prove that for all d, except for d=2, 3, 5 these algebras can't be free.
For fixed $q\in\{3,7,11,19, 43,67,163\}$, we consider the density of primes $p$ congruent to $1$ modulo $4$ such that the class group of the number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-qp})$ has order divisible by $16$. We show that this density is equal to $1/8$, in line with a more general conjecture of Gerth. Vinogradov's method is the key analytic tool for our work.
Groups of order $4$ are isomorphic to either $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. We give certain sufficient conditions permitting to specify the structure of class groups of order $4$ in the family of real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}{(\sqrt{n^2+1})}$ as $n$ varies over positive integers. Further, we compute the values of Dedekind zeta function attached to these quadratic fields at the point $-1$. As a side result, we show that the size of the class group of this family could be made as large as possible by increasing the size of the number of di…
We prove that an additive form of degree $d=2m$, $m$ odd, $m\ge3$, over the unramified quadratic extension $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{5})$ has a nontrivial zero if the number of variables $s$ satisifies $s \ge 4d+1$. If $3 \nmid d$, then there exists a nontrivial zero if $s \ge \frac{3}{2}d + 1$, this bound being optimal. We give examples of forms in $3d$ variables without a nontrivial zero in case that $3 \mid d$.
We determine the minimal number of variables $Γ^*(d, K)$ which guarantees a nontrivial solution for every additive form of degree $d=4$ over the four ramified quadratic extensions $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{10}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-10}) $ of $\mathbb{Q}_2$. In all four fields, we prove that $Γ^*(4,K) = 11$. This is the first example of such a computation for a proper extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ where the degree is a power of $p$ greater than $p$.
The density of primes $p$ such that the class number $h$ of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ is divisible by $2^k$ is conjectured to be $2^{-k}$ for all positive integers $k$. The conjecture is true for $1\leq k\leq 3$ but still open for $k\geq 4$. For primes $p$ of the form $p = a^2 + c^4$ with $c$ even, we describe the 8-Hilbert class field of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ in terms of $a$ and $c$. We then adapt a theorem of Friedlander and Iwaniec to show that there are infinitely many primes $p$ for which $h$ is divisible by $16$, and also infinitely many primes $p$ for which $h$ is divisible by $8$ but n…
We use a variant of Vinogradov's method to show that the density of the set of prime numbers $p\equiv -1\bmod~4$ for which the class group of the imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-8p})$ has an element of order $16$ is equal to $1/16$, as predicted by the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics.
Let $p\equiv -q \equiv 5\pmod 8$ be two prime integers. In this paper, we investigate the unit groups of the fields $ L_1 =\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt 2, \sqrt{p}, \sqrt{q}, \sqrt{-1} )$ and $ L_1^+=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt 2, \sqrt{p}, \sqrt{q} )$. Furthermore , we give the second $ 2$-class groups of the subextensions of $L_1$ as well the $2$-class groups of the fields $ L_n =\mathbb{Q}( \sqrt{p}, \sqrt{q}, ζ_{2^{n+2}} )$ and their maximal real subfelds.
An interesting question, known as the Gaussian moat problem, asks whether it is possible to walk to infinity on Gaussian primes with steps of bounded length. Our work examines a similar situation in the real quadratic integer ring $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$ whose primes cluster near the asymptotes $y = \pm x/\sqrt{2}$ as compared to Gaussian primes, which cluster near the origin. We construct a probabilistic model of primes in $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$ by applying the prime number theorem and a combinatorial theorem for counting the number of lattice points whose absolute values of their norms are at…
Well-known results of Lagrange and Jacobi prove that the every $m \in \mathbb N$ can be expressed as a sum of four integer squares, and the number $r(m)$ of such representations can be given by an explicit formula in $m$. In this paper, we prove that the only real quadratic number field for which the sum of four squares is universal is $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{5})$. We provide explicit formulas for $r(m)$ for $K= \mathbb Q (\sqrt{2})$ and $K= \mathbb Q(\sqrt{5})$. We then consider the theta series of the sum of four squares over any real quadratic number field, providing explicit upper and lower bound…
The class number divisibility problem for number fields is one of the classical problems in algebraic number theory, which originated from Gauss' class number conjectures. The relation between the points on an elliptic curve and class number divisibility of a number field has been explored through the works of various mathematicians. Here, we explicitly construct an unramified abelian extension of a bi-quadratic field generated from points of a certain type of elliptic curve. Moreover, showing the $2$-Selmer rank of the said elliptic curve as $1$, we also construct an infinite family of bi-qua…
In this paper, we obtain a formula for the special value of Euler-Dirichlet $L$-function $L_E(s,χ)$ at $s=1$. This leads to another class number formula of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{m})^{+}$, the maximal real subfield of $m$th cyclotomic field. From this formula, we construct a new type of cyclotomic units in $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})$, which implies a similar Kummer's relation between the ideal class number of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})^{+}$ and the unit index.
For a square-free integer $t$, Byeon \cite{byeon} proved the existence of infinitely many pairs of quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{tD})$ with $D > 0$ such that the class numbers of all of them are indivisible by $3$. In the same spirit, we prove that for a given integer $t \geq 1$ with $t \equiv 0 \pmod {4}$, a positive proportion of fundamental discriminants $D > 0$ exist for which the class numbers of both the real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D + t})$ are indivisible by $3$. This also addresses the complement of a weak form of a…
We prove a new formula for the central value of the $L$-function $L(E_{D, α}, 1)$ corresponding to the family of sextic twists over $\mathbb{Q}[\sqrt{-3}]$ of elliptic curves $E_{D, α}: y^2=x^3+16D^2α^3$ for $D$ an integer and $α\in \mathbb{Q}[\sqrt{-3}]$. The formula generalizes the result of cubic twists over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Rodriguez-Villegas and Zagier for a prime $D \equiv 1 (9)$ and of Rosu for general $D$. For $α$ prime and all integers $D$, we also show that the expected value from the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group is an integer square …
In this article, we introduce a systematic and uniform construction of non-singular plane curves of odd degrees $n \geq 5$ which violate the local-global principle. Our construction works unconditionally for $n$ divisible by $p^2$ for some odd prime number $p$. Moreover, our construction also works for $n$ divisible by some $p \geq 5$ which satisfies a conjecture on $p$-adic properties of the fundamental units of $\mathbb{Q}(p^{1/3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}((2p)^{1/3})$. This conjecture is a natural cubic analogue of the classical Ankeny-Artin-Chowla-Mordell conjecture for $\mathbb{Q}(p^{1/2})$ and e…
In the integer case, the Smarandache function of a positive integer $n$ is defined to be the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $n$ divides the factorial $k!$. In this paper, we first define a natural order for polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and then define the Smarandache function of a non-zero polynomial $f \in \mathbb{F}_q[t]$, denoted by $S(f)$, to be the smallest polynomial $g$ such that $f$ divides the Carlitz factorial of $g$. In particular, we establish an analogue of a problem of Erd{\H o}s, which implies that for almost all polynomials $f$, $…
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, and let $\mathcal{O}$ be the ring of integers of $K$. The prime $2$ splits in $K$, say $2\mathcal{O} = \mathfrak{p} \mathfrak{p}^\ast$, and there is a unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$, which is unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$, and write $H_\infty = HK_\infty$. Let $M(H_\infty)$ be the maximal abelian $2$-extension of $H_\infty$, which is unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and put $X(H_\infty) = \mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\inf…
We show that for arithmetic weights with a fixed finite order character, the slopes of $U_p$ (for $p=2$) acting on overconvergent Hilbert modular forms of level $U_0(4)$ are independent of the (algebraic part of the) weight and can be obtained by a simple recipe from the classical slopes in parallel weight $3$.
It is shown that the number of irreducible quartic factors of the form $g(x) = x^4+ax^3+(11a+2)x^2-ax+1$ which divide the Hasse invariant of the Tate normal form $E_5$ in characteristic $l$ is a simple linear function of the class number $h(-5l)$ of the field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-5l})$, when $l \equiv 2,3$ modulo $5$. A similar result holds for irreducible quadratic factors of $g(x)$, when $l \equiv 1, 4$ modulo $5$. This implies a formula for the number of linear factors over $\mathbb{F}_p$ of the supersingular polynomial $ss_p^{(5*)}(x)$ corresponding to the Fricke group $Γ_0^*(5)$.
In the article [PV] a general procedure to study solutions of the equations $x^4-dy^2=z^p$ was presented for negative values of $d$. The purpose of the resent article is to extend our previous results to positive values of $d$. On doing so, we give a description of the extension $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d},\sqrtε)/\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ (where $ε$ is a fundamental unit) needed to prove the existence of a Hecke character over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ with prescribed local conditions. We also extend some "large image" results due to Ellenberg regarding images of Galois representations coming from $\mathbb…
