The density of primes $p$ such that the class number $h$ of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ is divisible by $2^k$ is conjectured to be $2^{-k}$ for all positive integers $k$. The conjecture is true for $1\leq k\leq 3$ but still open for $k\geq 4$. For primes $p$ of the form $p = a^2 + c^4$ with $c$ even, we describe the 8-Hilbert class field of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ in terms of $a$ and $c$. We then adapt a theorem of Friedlander and Iwaniec to show that there are infinitely many primes $p$ for which $h$ is divisible by $16$, and also infinitely many primes $p$ for which $h$ is divisible by $8$ but not by $16$.
We construct a new infinite family of pairs of imaginary cyclic fields of degree $(p-1)/2$ explicitly with both class numbers divisible by a given prime number $p$. For the proof, we use the fundamental unit of $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{p})$, certain units which are roots of a parametric quartic polynomial, the Kummer theory, the Gauss sums and the Jacobi sums, linear recurrence sequences, a consequence of the Weil conjecture and a result of Lenstra which is a generalization of Artin conjecture on primitive roots. Our result is based on the famous Scholz' results on pairs of quadratic fields $\mathbb Q…
Let $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 3$ be odd integers, and let $m\geq 0$ be any integer. For a prime number $\ell$, we prove that the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\ell^{2m}-2k^n})$ is either divisible by $n$ or by a specific divisor of $n$. Applying this result, we construct an infinite family of certain tuples of imaginary quadratic fields of the form $$\left(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{4d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+16}), \cdots, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4^t}) \right)$$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $1\leq 4^t\leq 2|d|…
For a given odd positive integer $n$ and an odd prime $p$, we construct an infinite family of quadruples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+4})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+4p^2})$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that the class number of each of them is divisible by $n$. Subsequently, we show that there is an infinite family of quintuples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+4})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+36})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+100})$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ whose class numb…
For any odd prime $p,$ we construct an infinite family of pairs of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}),\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ whose class numbers are both divisible by $p.$ One of our theorems settles Iizuka's conjecture for the case $n=1$ and $p >2.$
We obtain new lower bounds for the number of Fourier coefficients of a weakly holomorphic modular form of half-integral weight not divisible by some prime $\ell$. Among the applications of this we show that there are $\gg \sqrt{X}/\log \log X$ integers $n \leq X$ for which the partition function $p(n)$ is not divisible by $\ell$, and that there are $\gg \sqrt{X}/\log \log X$ values of $n \leq X$ for which $c(n)$, the $n$th Fourier coefficient of the $j$-invariant, is odd.
For fixed $q\in\{3,7,11,19, 43,67,163\}$, we consider the density of primes $p$ congruent to $1$ modulo $4$ such that the class group of the number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-qp})$ has order divisible by $16$. We show that this density is equal to $1/8$, in line with a more general conjecture of Gerth. Vinogradov's method is the key analytic tool for our work.
Let $k \geq 1$ be a cube-free integer with $k \equiv 1 \pmod {9}$ and $\gcd(k, 7\cdot 571)=1$. In this paper, we prove the existence of infinitely many triples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+k^2})$ with $d \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that the class number of each of them is divisible by $3$. This affirmatively answers a weaker version of a conjecture of Iizuka \cite{iizuka-jnt}.
For a positive integer $n$ let $\mathfrak{P}_n=\prod_{s_p(n)\ge p} p,$ where $p$ runs over all primes and $s_p(n)$ is the sum of the base $p$ digits of $n$. For all $n$ we prove that $\mathfrak{P}_n$ is divisible by all "small" primes with at most one exception. We also show that $\mathfrak{P}_n$ is large, has many prime factors exceeding $\sqrt{n}$, with the largest one exceeding $n^{20/37}$. We establish Kellner's conjecture, which says that the number of prime factors exceeding $\sqrt{n}$ grows asymptotically as $κ\sqrt{n}/\log n$ for some constant $κ$ with $κ=2$. Further, we compare the si…
For primes $p$, we study the maximal possible size of a $p$-core $p'$-partition (a partition with no hook lengths or parts divisible by $p$). McDowell recently proved that the maximum is attained by a unique partition, say $Λ_p$. Using his graph theoretic description of $Λ_p$, we prove for $p > 10^6$ that \[\frac{1}{24}p^6 - p^5\sqrt{p} < |Λ_p| < \frac{1}{24}p^6 - \frac{1}{200}p^5\sqrt{p},\] which shows that $|Λ_p| \sim p^6/24$ as $p \to \infty$.
Let $d$ be a positive square-free integer $\equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ such that there is no invariant of the ideal class group $\mathbb{Q}\lbrack \sqrt{-d}\rbrack$ which is divisible by $4$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of immersed totally geodesic surfaces in $Γ_{-d}\backslash \mathbb{H}^3$ having area less than $X$.
All the periodic points of a certain algebraic function related to the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$ are determined. They turn out to be $0, \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}$, and the conjugates over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the values $r(w_d/5)$, where $w_d$ is one of a specific set of algebraic integers, divisible by the square of a prime divisor of 5, in the field $K_d=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$, as $-d$ ranges over all negative quadratic discriminants for which $\left(\frac{-d}{5}\right) = +1$. This yields new insights on class numbers of orders in the fields $K_d$. Conjecture 1 of Part I is prov…
Let $q$ be a prime. We classify the odd primes $p\neq q$ such that the equation $x^2\equiv q\pmod{p}$ has a solution, concretely, we find a subgroup $\mathbb{L}_{4q}$ of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{U}_{4q}$ of integers relatively prime with $4q$ (modulo $4q$) such that $x^2\equiv q\pmod{p}$ has a solution iff $p\equiv c\pmod{4q}$ for some $c\in\mathbb{L}_{4q}$. Moreover, $\mathbb{L}_{4q}$ is the only subgroup of $\mathbb{U}_{4q}$ of half order containing $-1$. Considering the ring $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$, for any odd prime $p$ it is known that the equation $x^2\equiv 2\pmod{p}$ has a solu…
For a finite group $G$, let $K(G)$ denote the field generated over $\mathbb{Q}$ by its character values. For $n>24$, G. R. Robinson and J. G. Thompson proved that $$K(A_n)=\mathbb{Q}\left (\{ \sqrt{p^*} \ : \ p\leq n \ {\text{ an odd prime with } p\neq n-2}\}\right),$$ where $p^*:=(-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}p$. Confirming a speculation of Thompson, we show that arbitrary suitable multiquadratic fields are similarly generated by the values of $A_n$-characters restricted to elements whose orders are only divisible by ramified primes. To be more precise, we say that a $π$-number is a positive integer wh…

Let $D$ be a subset of a finite commutative ring $R$ with identity. Let $f(x)\in R[x]$ be a polynomial of positive degree $d$. For integer $0\leq k \leq |D|$, we study the number $N_f(D,k,b)$ of $k$-subsets $S\subseteq D$ such that \begin{align*} \sum_{x\in S} f(x)=b. \end{align*} In this paper, we establish several asymptotic formulas for $N_f(D,k, b)$, depending on the nature of the ring $R$ and $f$. For $R=\mathbb{Z}_n$, let $p=p(n)$ be the smallest prime divisor of $n$, $|D|=n-c \geq C_dn p^{-\frac 1d }+c$ and $f(x)=a_dx^d +\cdots +a_0\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ with $(a_d, \dots, a_1, n)=1$. Then …
