For a square-free integer $t$, Byeon \cite{byeon} proved the existence of infinitely many pairs of quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{tD})$ with $D > 0$ such that the class numbers of all of them are indivisible by $3$. In the same spirit, we prove that for a given integer $t \geq 1$ with $t \equiv 0 \pmod {4}$, a positive proportion of fundamental discriminants $D > 0$ exist for which the class numbers of both the real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D + t})$ are indivisible by $3$. This also addresses the complement of a weak form of a conjecture of Iizuka in \cite{iizuka}. As an application of our main result, we obtain that for any integer $t \geq 1$ with $t \equiv 0 \pmod{12}$, there are infinitely many pairs of real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D + t})$ such that the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants associated with the basic $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$-extensions of both $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D + t})$ are $0$. For $p = 3$, this supports Greenberg's conjecture which asserts that $λ_{p}(K) = 0$ for any prime number $p$ and any totally real number field $K$.
We quantify a recent theorem of Wiles on class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields by proving an estimate for the number of negative fundamental discriminants down to -X whose class numbers are indivisible by a given prime and whose imaginary quadratic fields satisfy any given set of local conditions. This estimate matches the best results in the direction of the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for the number of imaginary quadratic fields with class number indivisible by a given prime. This general result is applied to study rank 0 twists of certain elliptic curves.
For certain elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with multiplicative reduction at a prime $p\geq 5$, we prove the $p$-indivisibility of the derived Heegner classes defined with respect to an imaginary quadratic field $K$, as conjectured by Kolyvagin. The conditions on $E$ include that $E[p]$ be irreducible and not finite at $p$ and that $p$ split in the imaginary quadratic field $K$, along with certain $p$-indivisibility conditions on various Tamagawa factors. The proof extends the arguments of the second author for the case where $E$ has good ordinary reduction at~$p$.
It is known that infinitely many number fields and function fields of any degree $m$ have class number divisible by a given integer $n$. However, significantly less is known about the indivisibility of class numbers of such fields. While it's known that there exist infinitely many quadratic number fields with class number indivisible by a given prime, the fields are not constructed explicitly, and nothing appears to be known for higher degree extensions. In \cite{Pacelli-Rosen}, Pacelli and Rosen explicitly constructed an infinite class of function fields of any degree $m$, $3 \nmid m$, over $…
We prove that a pair of integral quadratic forms in 5 or more variables will simultaneously represent "almost all" pairs of integers that satisfy the necessary local conditions, provided that the forms satisfy a suitable nonsingularity condition. In particular such forms simultaneously attain prime values if the obvious local conditions hold. The proof uses the circle method, and in particular pioneers a two-dimensional version of a Kloosterman refinement.
Let $ξ, ζ$ be quadratic real numbers in distinct quadratic fields. We establish the existence of effectively computable, positive real numbers $τ$ and $c$, such that, for every integer $q$ with $q > c$ we have $$ \max\{\|q ξ\|, \|q ζ\| \} > q^{-1 + τ}, $$ where $\| \cdot \|$ denotes the distance to the nearest integer.
Kaplansky [2003] proved a theorem on the simultaneous representation of a prime $p$ by two different principal binary quadratic forms. Later, Brink found five more like theorems and claimed that there were no others. By putting Kaplansky-like theorems into the context of threefield identities after Andrews, Dyson, and Hickerson, we find that there are at least two similar results not on Brink's list. We also show how such theorems are related to results of Muskat on binary quadratic forms
Let $k \geq 1$ be a cube-free integer with $k \equiv 1 \pmod {9}$ and $\gcd(k, 7\cdot 571)=1$. In this paper, we prove the existence of infinitely many triples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+k^2})$ with $d \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that the class number of each of them is divisible by $3$. This affirmatively answers a weaker version of a conjecture of Iizuka \cite{iizuka-jnt}.
The system of equations \[ u_1p_1^2 + \ldots + u_sp_s^2 = 0 \] \[ v_1p_1^3 + \ldots + v_sp_s^3 = 0 \] has prime solutions $(p_1, \ldots, p_s)$ for $s \geq 12$, assuming that the system has solutions modulo each prime $p$. This is proved via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, building on Wooley's work on the corresponding system over the integers and recent results on Vinogradov's mean value theorem. Additionally, a set of sufficient conditions for local solvability is given: If both equations are solvable modulo 2, the quadratic equation is solvable modulo 3, and for each prime $p$ at least 7…
For suitable pairs of diagonal quadratic forms in 8 variables we use the circle method to investigate the density of simultaneous integer solutions and relate this to the problem of estimating linear correlations among sums of two squares.
There are abundant results on Diophantine approximation over fields of positive characteristic (see the survey papers [13, 25]), but there is very little information about simultaneous approximation. In this paper, we develop a technique of \geometry of numbers" in positive characteristic, so that we may generalize some of the classical results on simultaneous approximation to the case of function fields. More precisely, we approximate a finite set of Laurent series by rational functions with a common denominator. In particular, the lower bound results we obtain may be regarded as a high dimen…
In this paper we establish three results on small-height zeros of quadratic polynomials over $\overline{\mathbb Q}$. For a single quadratic form in $N \geq 2$ variables on a subspace of $\overline{\mathbb Q}^N$, we prove an upper bound on the height of a smallest nontrivial zero outside of an algebraic set under the assumption that such a zero exists. For a system of $k$ quadratic forms on an $L$-dimensional subspace of $\overline{\mathbb Q}^N$, $N \geq L \geq \frac{k(k+1)}{2}+1$, we prove existence of a nontrivial simultaneous small-height zero. For a system of one or two inhomogeneous quadra…
We verify a conjecture of Emil Artin, for the case of a Cubic and Quadratic form over any $p$-adic field, provided the cardinality of the residue class field exceeds 293. That is any Cubic and Quadratic form with at least 14 variables has a non-trivial $p$-adic zero, with the aforementioned condition on the residue class field. A crucial step in the proof, involves generalizing a $p$-adic minimization procedure due to W. M. Schmidt to hold for systems of forms of arbitrary degrees.
Every quadratic form represents 0; therefore, if we take any number of quadratic forms and ask which integers are simultaneously represented by all members of the collection, we are guaranteed a nonempty set. But when is that set more than just the "trivial" 0? We address this question in the case of integral, positive- definite, reduced, binary quadratic forms. For forms of the same discriminant, we can use the structure of the underlying class group. If, however, the forms have different discriminants, we must apply class field theory.
Given a pair of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ whose $j$-invariants are not simultaneously 0 or 1728, Kuwata and Wang proved the existence of infinitely many square-free rationals $d$ such that the $d$-quadratic twists of $E_1$ and $E_2$ are both of positive rank. We construct infinite families of pairs of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that for each pair there exist infinitely many square-free rationals $d$ for which the $d$-quadratic twists of $E_1$ and $E_2$ are both of rank at least 2.
In 1969, H. Davenport and W. Schmidt established a measure of simultaneous approximation for a real number ξand its square by rational numbers with the same denominator, assuming only that ξis not rational nor quadratic over Q. Here, we show by an example, that this measure is optimal. We also indicate several properties of the numbers for which this measure is optimal, in particular with respect to approximation by algebraic integers of degree at most three.
Let $F_1,\dotsc,F_R$ be quadratic forms with integer coefficients in $n$ variables. When $n\geq 9R$ and the variety $V(F_1,\dotsc,F_R)$ is a smooth complete intersection, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of integer points in an expanding box at which these forms simultaneously vanish, which in particular implies the Hasse principle for $V(F_1,\dotsc,F_R)$. Previous work in this direction required $n$ to grow at least quadratically with $R$. We give a similar result for $R$ forms of degree $d$, conditional on an upper bound for the number of solutions to an auxiliary inequality. In…
Kaplansky conjectured that if two positive-definite real ternary quadratic forms have perfectly identical representations over $\mathbb{Z}$, they are constant multiples of regular forms, or is included in either of two families parametrized by $\mathbb{R}^2$ (so called, hexagonal and rhombohedral families). Our results aim to clarify the limitations imposed to such a pair by computational and theoretical approaches. Firstly, the result of an exhaustive search for such pairs of integral quadratic forms is presented, in order to provide a concrete version of the Kaplansky conjecture. The obtaine…
In the paper "On the interpolation of integer-valued polynomials" (Journal of Number Theory 133 (2013), pp. 4224--4232.) V. Volkov and F. Petrov consider the problem of existence of the so-called $n$-universal sets (related to simultaneous $p$-orderings of Bhargava) in the ring of Gaussian integers. We extend their results to arbitrary imaginary quadratic number fields and prove an existence theorem that provides a strong counterexample to a conjecture of Volkov-Petrov on minimal cardinality of $n$-universal sets. Along the way, we discover a link with Euler-Kronecker constants and prove a low…
We prove the existence of S-integral solutions of simultaneous diophantine inequalities for pairs (Q,L) involving one quadratic form and one linear form satisfying some arithmetico-geometric conditions. The proof uses strong approximation in algebraic groups and Ratner's topological rigidity of unipotent actions on homogeneous spaces.
The Mordell-Weil groups $E(\mathbb{Q})$ of elliptic curves influence the structures of their quadratic twists $E_{-D}(\mathbb{Q})$ and the ideal class groups $\mathrm{CL}(-D)$ of imaginary quadratic fields. For appropriate $(u,v) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$, we define a family of homomorphisms $Φ_{u,v}: E(\mathbb{Q}) \rightarrow \mathrm{CL}(-D)$ for particular negative fundamental discriminants $-D:=-D_E(u,v)$, which we use to simultaneously address questions related to lower bounds for class numbers, the structures of class groups, and ranks of quadratic twists. Specifically, given an elliptic curve $E…
Let $S$ be the collection of quadratic polynomial maps, and degree $2$-rational maps whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to $C_2$ defined over the rational field. Assuming standard conjectures of Poonen and Manes on the period length of a periodic point under the action of a map in $S$, we give a complete description of triples $(f_1,f_2,p)$ such that $p$ is a rational periodic point for both $f_i\in S$, $i=1,2$. We also show that no more than three quadratic polynomial maps can possess a common periodic point over the rational field. In addition, under these hypotheses we show that two n…
Let X^d(N) be the quadratic twist of the modular curve X_0(N) through the Atkin-Lehner involution w_N and a quadratic extension Q(\sqrt{d})/Q. The points of X^d(N)(Q) are precisely the Q(\sqrt{d})-rational points of X_0(N) that are fixed by σcomposition w_N, where σis the generator of Gal(Q(\sqrt{d})/Q).Ellenberg asked the following question: For which d and N does X^d(N) have rational points over every completion of Q? Given (N,d,p) we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Q_p-rational point on X^d(N), whenever p is not simultaneously ramified in Q(\sqrt{d}) and Q(\s…
