The paper addresses the problem of sampling discretization of integral norms of elements of finite-dimensional subspaces satisfying some conditions. We prove sampling discretization results under two standard kinds of assumptions -- conditions on the entropy numbers and conditions in terms of the Nikol'skii-type inequalities. We prove some upper bounds on the number of sample points sufficient for good discretization and show that these upper bounds are sharp in a certain sense. Then we apply our general conditional results to subspaces with special structures, namely, subspaces with the tensor product structure. We demonstrate that applications of results based on the Nikol'skii-type inequalities provide somewhat better results than applications of results based on the entropy numbers conditions. Finally, we apply discretization results to the problem of sampling recovery.
We prove a sampling discretization theorem for the square norm of functions from a finite dimensional subspace satisfying Nikol'skii's inequality with an upper bound on the number of sampling points of the order of the dimension of the subspace
The paper is devoted to discretization of integral norms of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace. We use recent general results on sampling discretization to derive a new Marcinkiewicz type discretization theorem for the multivariate trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from the hyperbolic crosses. It is shown that recently developed techniques allow us to improve the known results in this direction.
Let $X_N$ be an $N$-dimensional subspace of $L_2$ functions on a probability space $(Ω, μ)$ spanned by a uniformly bounded Riesz basis $Φ_N$. Given an integer $1\leq v\leq N$ and an exponent $1\leq q\leq 2$, we obtain universal discretization for integral norms $L_q(Ω,μ)$ of functions from the collection of all subspaces of $X_N$ spanned by $v$ elements of $Φ_N$ with the number $m$ of required points satisfying $m\ll v(\log N)^2(\log v)^2$. This last bound on $m$ is much better than previously known bounds which are quadratic in $v$. Our proof uses a conditional theorem on universal sampling d…
Discretization of the uniform norm of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace of continuous functions is studied. We pay special attention to the case of trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from an arbitrary finite set with fixed cardinality. We give two different proofs of the fact that for any $N$-dimensional subspace of the space of continuous functions it is sufficient to use $e^{CN}$ sample points for an accurate upper bound for the uniform norm. Previous known results show that one cannot improve on the exponential growth of the number of sampling points for a good disc…
We consider infinitely dimensional classes of functions and instead of the relative error setting, which was used in previous papers on the integral norm discretization, we consider the absolute error setting. We demonstrate how known results from two areas of research -- supervised learning theory and numerical integration -- can be used in sampling discretization of the square norm on different function classes. We prove a general result, which shows that the sequence of entropy numbers of a function class in the uniform norm dominates, in a certain sense, the sequence of errors of sampling …
The paper is devoted to discretization of integral norms of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace. Even though this problem is extremely important in applications, its systematic study has begun recently. In this paper we obtain a conditional theorem for all integral norms $L_q$, $1\le q<\infty$, which is an extension of known results for $q=1$. To discretize the integral norms successfully, we introduce a new technique, which is a combination of probabilistic technique with results on the entropy numbers in the uniform norm. As an application of the general conditional theorem, w…
This paper is devoted to the question of constructing a higher order Faber spline basis for the sampling discretization of functions with higher regularity than Lipschitz. The basis constructed in this paper has similar properties as the piecewise linear classical Faber-Schauder basis except for the compactness of the support. Although the new basis functions are supported on the real line they are very well localized (exponentially decaying) and the main parts are concentrated on a segment. This construction gives a complete answer to Problem 3.13 in Triebel's monograph (see References [47]) …
For a subspace $X$ of functions from $L_2$ we consider the minimal number $m$ of nodes necessary for the exact discretization of the $L_2$-norm of the functions in $X$. We construct a subspace such that for any exact discretization with $m$ nodes there is at least one negative weight.
In this paper we study $L_2$-norm sampling discretization and sampling recovery of complex-valued functions in RKHS on $D \subset \R^d$ based on random function samples. We only assume the finite trace of the kernel (Hilbert-Schmidt embedding into $L_2$) and provide several concrete estimates with precise constants for the corresponding worst-case errors. In general, our analysis does not need any additional assumptions and also includes the case of non-Mercer kernels and also non-separable RKHS. The fail probability is controlled and decays polynomially in $n$, the number of samples. Under th…
For the multivariate trigonometric polynomials we study convolution with the corresponding the de la Vallee Poussin kernel from the point of view of discretization. In other words, we replace the normalized Lebesgue measure by a discrete measure in such a way, which preserves the convolution properties and provides sampling discretization of integral norms. We prove that in the two-variate case the Fibonacci point sets provide an ideal (in the sense of order) solution. We also show that the Korobov point sets provide a suboptimal (up to logarithmic factors) solution for an arbitrary number of …
In this work, we propose a new quasi-optimal test norm for a discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) discretization of the ultra-weak formulation of the convection-diffusion equation. We prove theoretically that the proposed test norm leads to bounds between the target norm and the energy norm induced by the test norm which are robust with respect to the diffusion parameter in the solution and gradient components and have favorable scalings in the trace components. We conclude with numerical experiments to confirm our theoretical results.
Full moment error estimates in strong norms for numerical approximations of stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise, Part I: time discretization
The time discretization of stochastic spectral fractional wave equation is studied by using the difference methods. Firstly, we exploit rectangle formula to get a low order time discretization, whose the strong convergence order is smaller than $1$ in the sense of mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Meanwhile, by modifying the low order method with trapezoidal rule, the convergence rate is improved at expenses of requiring some extra temporal regularity to the solution. The modified scheme has superlinear convergence rate under the mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Several numerical experiments are provided to co…
The aim of this paper is to apply a high-order discontinuous-in-time scheme to second-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). We first discretize the PDEs in time while keeping the spatial differential operators undiscretized. The well-posedness of this semi-discrete scheme is analyzed and a priori error estimates are derived in the energy norm. We then combine this $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin method for temporal discretization with an $H^1$-conforming finite element approximation for the spatial variables to construct a fully discrete scheme. A prior error estimates ar…
The balancing domain decomposition methods (BDDC) are originally introduced for symmetric positive definite systems and have been extended to the nonsymmetric positive definite system from the linear finite element discretization of advection-diffusion equations. In this paper, the convergence of the GMRES method is analyzed for the BDDC preconditioned linear system from advection-diffusion equations with the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization. Compared to the finite element discretizations, several additional norms for the numerical trace have to be used and the equivale…
Guaranteed, locally space-time efficient, and polynomial-degree robust a posteriori error estimates for high-order discretizations of parabolic problems
We consider a minimal residual discretization of a simultaneous space-time variational formulation of parabolic evolution equations. Under the usual `LBB' stability condition on pairs of trial- and test spaces we show quasi-optimality of the numerical approximations without assuming symmetry of the spatial part of the differential operator. Under a stronger LBB condition we show error estimates in an energy-norm which are independent of this spatial differential operator.
In this paper, we propose a new approach for the time-discretization of the incompressible stochastic Stokes equations with multiplicative noise. Our new strategy is based on the classical Milstein method from stochastic differential equations. We use the energy method for its error analysis and show a strong convergence order of at most $1$ for both velocity and pressure approximations. The proof is based on a new Hölder continuity estimate of the velocity solution. While the errors of the velocity approximation are estimated in the standard $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms, the pressure errors are car…
Maximal parabolic $L^p$-regularity of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface is shown by pulling back the problem to the initial surface and studying the maximal $L^p$-regularity on a fixed surface. By freezing the coefficients in the parabolic equations at a fixed time and utilizing a perturbation argument around the freezed time, it is shown that backward difference time discretizations of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface along characteristic trajectories can preserve maximal $L^p$-regularity in the discrete setting. The result is applied to prove the stability an…
We consider the system of partial differential equations stemming from the time discretization of the two-field formulation of the Biot's model with the backward Euler scheme. A typical difficulty encountered in the space discretization of this problem is the robustness with respect to various material parameters. We deal with this issue by observing that the problem is uniformly stable, irrespective of all parameters, in a suitable nonsymmetric variational setting. Guided by this result, we design a novel nonconforming discretization, which employs Crouzeix-Raviart and discontinuous elements.…
We consider the reaction diffusion problem and present efficient ways to discretize and precondition in the singular perturbed case when the reaction term dominates the equation. Using the concepts of optimal test norm and saddle point reformulation, we provide efficient discretization processes for uniform and non-uniform meshes. We present a preconditioning strategy that works for a large range of the perturbation parameter. Numerical examples to illustrate the efficiency of the method are included for a problem on the unit square.
We present recent finite element numerical results on a model convection-diffusion problem in the singular perturbed case when the convection term dominates the problem. We compare the standard Galerkin discretization using the linear element with a saddle point least square discretization that uses quadratic test functions, trying to control and explain the non-physical oscillations of the discrete solutions. We also relate the up-winding Petrov-Galerkin method and the stream-line diffusion discretization method, by emphasizing the resulting linear systems and by comparing appropriate error n…
