This paper surveys recent developments in the sampling discretization of integral and uniform norms for functions in general finite-dimensional spaces. These results generalize the classical Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities for trigonometric and algebraic polynomials, which play a crucial role in Fourier analysis, interpolation, and approximation theory. We focus on the problem in the broad context of finite-dimensional subspaces, where norms defined by general probability measures are approximated by their discrete counterparts.
The primary emphasis is on results closely related to the authors' recent research. A key objective is to highlight the main ideas and techniques that form the foundation of the proofs in this area. This survey serves as a complement to three recently published survey papers on sampling discretization \cite{DPTT, KKLT, LMT}.
Discretization of the uniform norm of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace of continuous functions is studied. We pay special attention to the case of trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from an arbitrary finite set with fixed cardinality. We give two different proofs of the fact that for any $N$-dimensional subspace of the space of continuous functions it is sufficient to use $e^{CN}$ sample points for an accurate upper bound for the uniform norm. Previous known results show that one cannot improve on the exponential growth of the number of sampling points for a good disc…
The paper is devoted to discretization of integral norms of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace. We use recent general results on sampling discretization to derive a new Marcinkiewicz type discretization theorem for the multivariate trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from the hyperbolic crosses. It is shown that recently developed techniques allow us to improve the known results in this direction.
For a subspace $X$ of functions from $L_2$ we consider the minimal number $m$ of nodes necessary for the exact discretization of the $L_2$-norm of the functions in $X$. We construct a subspace such that for any exact discretization with $m$ nodes there is at least one negative weight.

We consider infinitely dimensional classes of functions and instead of the relative error setting, which was used in previous papers on the integral norm discretization, we consider the absolute error setting. We demonstrate how known results from two areas of research -- supervised learning theory and numerical integration -- can be used in sampling discretization of the square norm on different function classes. We prove a general result, which shows that the sequence of entropy numbers of a function class in the uniform norm dominates, in a certain sense, the sequence of errors of sampling …
In this work, we propose a new quasi-optimal test norm for a discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) discretization of the ultra-weak formulation of the convection-diffusion equation. We prove theoretically that the proposed test norm leads to bounds between the target norm and the energy norm induced by the test norm which are robust with respect to the diffusion parameter in the solution and gradient components and have favorable scalings in the trace components. We conclude with numerical experiments to confirm our theoretical results.
The paper addresses the problem of sampling discretization of integral norms of elements of finite-dimensional subspaces satisfying some conditions. We prove sampling discretization results under two standard kinds of assumptions -- conditions on the entropy numbers and conditions in terms of the Nikol'skii-type inequalities. We prove some upper bounds on the number of sample points sufficient for good discretization and show that these upper bounds are sharp in a certain sense. Then we apply our general conditional results to subspaces with special structures, namely, subspaces with the tenso…
We consider the reaction diffusion problem and present efficient ways to discretize and precondition in the singular perturbed case when the reaction term dominates the equation. Using the concepts of optimal test norm and saddle point reformulation, we provide efficient discretization processes for uniform and non-uniform meshes. We present a preconditioning strategy that works for a large range of the perturbation parameter. Numerical examples to illustrate the efficiency of the method are included for a problem on the unit square.

The aim of this paper is to formulate and analyze numerical discretizations of charged-particle dynamics (CPD) in a strong nonuniform magnetic field. A strategy is firstly performed for the two dimensional CPD to construct the semi-discretization and full-discretization which have optimal accuracy. This accuracy is improved in the position and in the velocity when the strength of the magnetic field becomes stronger. This is a better feature than the usual so called "uniformly accurate methods". To obtain this refined accuracy, some reformulations of the problem and two-scale exponential integr…

We prove a sampling discretization theorem for the square norm of functions from a finite dimensional subspace satisfying Nikol'skii's inequality with an upper bound on the number of sampling points of the order of the dimension of the subspace
The paper is devoted to discretization of integral norms of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace. Even though this problem is extremely important in applications, its systematic study has begun recently. In this paper we obtain a conditional theorem for all integral norms $L_q$, $1\le q<\infty$, which is an extension of known results for $q=1$. To discretize the integral norms successfully, we introduce a new technique, which is a combination of probabilistic technique with results on the entropy numbers in the uniform norm. As an application of the general conditional theorem, w…
We establish improved uniform error bounds on time-splitting methods for the long-time dynamics of the Dirac equation with small electromagnetic potentials characterized by a dimensionless parameter $\varepsilon\in (0, 1]$ representing the amplitude of the potentials. We begin with a semi-discritization of the Dirac equation in time by a time-splitting method, and then followed by a full-discretization in space by the Fourier pseudospectral method. Employing the unitary flow property of the second-order time-splitting method for the Dirac equation, we prove uniform error bounds at $C(t)τ^2$ an…

In this paper we study $L_2$-norm sampling discretization and sampling recovery of complex-valued functions in RKHS on $D \subset \R^d$ based on random function samples. We only assume the finite trace of the kernel (Hilbert-Schmidt embedding into $L_2$) and provide several concrete estimates with precise constants for the corresponding worst-case errors. In general, our analysis does not need any additional assumptions and also includes the case of non-Mercer kernels and also non-separable RKHS. The fail probability is controlled and decays polynomially in $n$, the number of samples. Under th…
An improved uniform error bound at $O\left(h^m+\varepsilon^2 τ^2\right)$ is established in $H^{α/2}$-norm for the long-time dynamics of the nonlinear space fractional Klein-Gordon equation (NSFKGE). A second-order exponential wave integrator (EWI) method is used to semi-discretize NSFKGE in time and the Fourier spectral method in space is applied to derive the full-discretization scheme. Regularity compensation oscillation (RCO) technique is employed to prove the improved uniform error bounds at $O\left(\varepsilon^2 τ^2\right)$ in temporal semi-discretization and $O\left(h^m+\varepsilon^2 τ^2…
We propose a new three-dimensional formulation based on the mixed Tangential-Displacement Normal-Normal-Stress (TDNNS) method for elasticity. In elastic TDNNS elements, the tangential component of the displacement field and the normal component of the stress vector are degrees of freedom and continuous across inter-element interfaces. TDNNS finite elements have been shown to be locking-free with respect to shear locking in thin elements, which makes them suitable for the discretization of laminates or macro-fibre composites. In the current paper, we extend the formulation to piezoelectric mate…
In this paper, uniformly unconditionally stable first and second order finite difference schemes are developed for kinetic transport equations in the diffusive scaling. We first derive an approximate evolution equation for the macroscopic density, from the formal solution of the distribution function, which is then discretized by following characteristics for the transport part with a backward finite difference semi-Lagrangian approach, while the diffusive part is discretized implicitly. After the macroscopic density is available, the distribution function can be efficiently solved even with a…
We establish improved uniform error bounds on time-splitting methods for the long-time dynamics of the nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation (NKGE) with weak cubic nonlinearity, whose strength is characterized by $\varepsilon^2$ with $0 < \varepsilon \leq 1$ a dimensionless parameter. Actually, when $0 < \varepsilon \ll 1$, the NKGE with $O(\varepsilon^2)$ nonlinearity and $O(1)$ initial data is equivalent to that with $O(1)$ nonlinearity and small initial data of which the amplitude is at $O(\varepsilon)$. We begin with a semi-discretization of the NKGE by the second-order time-splitting method, a…
The time discretization of stochastic spectral fractional wave equation is studied by using the difference methods. Firstly, we exploit rectangle formula to get a low order time discretization, whose the strong convergence order is smaller than $1$ in the sense of mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Meanwhile, by modifying the low order method with trapezoidal rule, the convergence rate is improved at expenses of requiring some extra temporal regularity to the solution. The modified scheme has superlinear convergence rate under the mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Several numerical experiments are provided to co…
The aim of this paper is to apply a high-order discontinuous-in-time scheme to second-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). We first discretize the PDEs in time while keeping the spatial differential operators undiscretized. The well-posedness of this semi-discrete scheme is analyzed and a priori error estimates are derived in the energy norm. We then combine this $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin method for temporal discretization with an $H^1$-conforming finite element approximation for the spatial variables to construct a fully discrete scheme. A prior error estimates ar…
The balancing domain decomposition methods (BDDC) are originally introduced for symmetric positive definite systems and have been extended to the nonsymmetric positive definite system from the linear finite element discretization of advection-diffusion equations. In this paper, the convergence of the GMRES method is analyzed for the BDDC preconditioned linear system from advection-diffusion equations with the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization. Compared to the finite element discretizations, several additional norms for the numerical trace have to be used and the equivale…
