The time discretization of stochastic spectral fractional wave equation is studied by using the difference methods. Firstly, we exploit rectangle formula to get a low order time discretization, whose the strong convergence order is smaller than $1$ in the sense of mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Meanwhile, by modifying the low order method with trapezoidal rule, the convergence rate is improved at expenses of requiring some extra temporal regularity to the solution. The modified scheme has superlinear convergence rate under the mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Several numerical experiments are provided to confirm the theoretical error estimates.
This paper studies the convergence of a spatial semi-discretization for a backward semilinear stochastic parabolic equation. The filtration is general, and the spatial semi-discretization uses the standard continuous piecewise linear element method. Firstly, higher regularity of the solution to the continuous equation is derived. Secondly, the first-order spatial accuracy is derived for the spatial semi-discretization. Thirdly, an application of the theoretical result to a stochastic linear quadratic control problem is presented.
In this paper, a higher-order time-discretization scheme is proposed, where the iterates approximate the solution of the stochastic semilinear wave equation driven by multiplicative noise with general drift and diffusion. We employ a variational method for its error analysis and prove an improved convergence order of 3/2 for the approximates of the solution. The core of the analysis is Holder continuity in time and moment bounds for the solutions of the continuous and the discrete problem. Computational experiments are also presented.
Full moment error estimates in strong norms for numerical approximations of stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise, Part I: time discretization
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of a general second order semilinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by multiplicative and additive noise. Our main interest is on such SPDEs where the nonlinear part is stronger than the linear part also called stochastic reactive dominated transport equations. Most numerical techniques, including current stochastic exponential integrators lose their good stability properties on such equations. Using finite element for space discretization, we propose a new scheme appropriated on such equations, called stochastic ex…
This paper analyzes a discretization of a stochastic parabolic optimal control problem, where the diffusion term contains the control variable. With rough data, the convergence of the discretization is derived. In addition, a Monte-Carlo method is presented.
This paper proposes a fully discrete method called the symplectic dG full discretization for stochastic Maxwell equations driven by additive noises, based on a stochastic symplectic method in time and a discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method with the upwind fluxes in space. A priori $H^k$-regularity ($k\in\{1,2\}$) estimates for the solution of stochastic Maxwell equations are presented, which have not been reported before to the best of our knowledge. These $H^k$-regularities are vital to make the assumptions of the mean-square convergence analysis on the initial fields, the noise and the medium …
Our study aims to specify the asymptotic error distribution in the discretization of a stochastic Volterra equation with a fractional kernel. It is well-known that for a standard stochastic differential equation, the discretization error, normalized with its rate of convergence $1/\sqrt{n}$, converges in law to the solution of a certain linear equation. Similarly to this, we show that a suitably normalized discretization error of the Volterra equation converges in law to the solution of a certain linear Volterra equation with the same fractional kernel.
We consider the time discretization of fractional stochastic wave equation with Gaussian noise, which is negatively correlated. Major obstacles to design and analyze time discretization of stochastic wave equation come from the approximation of stochastic convolution with respect to fractional Brownian motion. Firstly, we discuss the smoothing properties of stochastic convolution by using integration by parts and covariance function of fractional Brownian motion. Then the regularity estimates of the mild solution of fractional stochastic wave equation are obtained. Next, we design the time dis…
A discretization of an optimal control problem of a stochastic parabolic equation driven by multiplicative noise is analyzed. The state equation is discretized by the continuous piecewise linear element method in space and by the backward Euler scheme in time. The convergence rate $ O(τ^{1/2} + h^2) $ is rigorously derived.
We introduce a time-implicit, finite-element based space-time discretization scheme for the backward stochastic heat equation, and for the forward-backward stochastic heat equation from stochastic optimal control, and prove strong rates of convergence. The fully discrete version of the forward-backward stochastic heat equation is then used within a gradient descent algorithm to approximately solve the linear-quadratic control problem for the stochastic heat equation driven by additive noise.
This paper studies the convergence of three temporal semi-discretizations for a backward semilinear stochastic evolution equation. For general terminal value and general coefficient with Lipschitz continuity, the convergence of the first two temporal semi-discretizations is established, and an explicit convergence rate is derived for the third temporal semi-discretization. The third temporal semi-discretization is applied to a general stochastic linear quadratic control problem, and the convergence of a temporally semi-discrete approximation to the optimal control is established.
In this paper, we propose a new approach for the time-discretization of the incompressible stochastic Stokes equations with multiplicative noise. Our new strategy is based on the classical Milstein method from stochastic differential equations. We use the energy method for its error analysis and show a strong convergence order of at most $1$ for both velocity and pressure approximations. The proof is based on a new Hölder continuity estimate of the velocity solution. While the errors of the velocity approximation are estimated in the standard $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms, the pressure errors are car…
We propose a time-implicit, finite-element based space-time discretization of the necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem with the stochastic heat equation driven by linear noise of type $[X(t)+σ(t)]dW(t)$, and prove optimal convergence w.r.t. both, space and time discretization parameters. In particular, we employ the stochastic Riccati equation as a proper analytical tool to handle the linear noise, and thus extend the applicability of the earlier work [16], where the error analysis was restricted to additive noise.

Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…

A high-accuracy time discretization is discussed to numerically solve the nonlinear fractional diffusion equation forced by a space-time white noise. The main purpose of this paper is to improve the temporal convergence rate by modifying the semi-implicit Euler scheme. The solution of the equation is only Hölder continuous in time, which is disadvantageous to improve the temporal convergence rate. Firstly, the system is transformed into an equivalent form having better regularity than the original one in time. But the regularity of nonlinear term remains unchanged. Then, combining Lagrange mea…

This paper investigates the influences of standard numerical discretizations on hitting probabilities for linear stochastic parabolic system driven by space-time white noises. We establish lower and upper bounds for hitting probabilities of the associated numerical solutions of both temporal and spatial semi-discretizations in terms of Bessel-Riesz capacity and Hausdorff measure, respectively. Moreover, the critical dimensions of both temporal and spatial semi-discretizations turn out to be half of those of the exact solution. This reveals that for a large class of Borel sets $A$, the probabil…
Stochastic Galerkin finite element method (SGFEM) provides an efficient alternative to traditional sampling methods for the numerical solution of linear elliptic partial differential equations with parametric or random inputs. However, computing stochastic Galerkin approximations for a given problem requires the solution of large coupled systems of linear equations. Therefore, an effective and bespoke iterative solver is a key ingredient of any SGFEM implementation. In this paper, we analyze a class of truncation preconditioners for SGFEM. Extending the idea of the mean-based preconditioner, t…
Maxwell's equations are a system of partial differential equations that govern the laws of electromagnetic induction. We study a mimetic finite-difference (MFD) discretization of the equations which preserves important underlying physical properties. We show that, after mass-lumping and appropriate scaling, the MFD discretization is equivalent to a structure-preserving finite-element (FE) scheme. This allows for a transparent analysis of the MFD method using the FE framework, and provides an avenue for the construction of efficient and robust linear solvers for the discretized system. In parti…
We consider an initial and Dirichlet boundary value problem for a semilinear, two dimensional heat equation over a rectangular domain. The problem is discretized in time by a version of the Relaxation Scheme proposed by C. Besse (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I, vol. 326 (1998)) for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and in space by a standard second order finite difference method. The proposed method is unconditionally well-posed and its convergence is established by proving an optimal second order error estimate allowing a mild mesh condition to hold.
This paper aims to investigate the numerical approximation of a general second order parabolic stochastic partial differential equation(SPDE) driven by multiplicative and additive noise. Our main interest is on such SPDEs where the nonlinear part is stronger than the linear part, usually called stochastic dominated transport equations. Most standard numerical schemes lose their good stability properties on such equations, including the current linear implicit Euler method. We discretise the SPDE in space by the finite element method and propose a new scheme in time appropriate for such equatio…
Motivated by fractional derivative models in viscoelasticity, a class of semilinear stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations, and their deterministic counterparts, are considered. A generalized exponential Euler method, named here as the Mittag-Leffler Euler integrator, is used for the temporal discretization, while the spatial discretization is performed by the spectral Galerkin method. The temporal rate of strong convergence is found to be (almost) twice compared to when the backward Euler method is used together with a convolution quadrature for time discretization. Numerical expe…
In this article, we consider the stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation driven by space-time white noise. We discretize this equation by using a spatial spectral Galerkin method and a temporal accelerated implicit Euler method. The optimal regularity properties and uniform moment bounds of the exact and numerical solutions are shown. Then we prove that the proposed numerical method is strongly convergent with the sharp convergence rate in a negative Sobolev space. By using an interpolation approach, we deduce the spatial optimal convergence rate and the temporal super-convergence rate of the propo…
Stochastic evolution equations with compensated Poisson noise are considered in the variational approach with monotone and coercive coefficients. Here the Poisson noise is assumed to be time-homogeneous with $σ$-finite intensity measure on a metric space. By using finite element methods and Galerkin approximations, some explicit and implicit discretizations for this equation are presented and their convergence is proved. Polynomial growth condition and linear growth condition are assumed on the drift operator, respectively for the implicit and explicit schemes.

We consider a numerical approximation of a linear quadratic control problem constrained by the stochastic heat equation with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. This involves a combination of distributed and boundary control, as well as both distributed and boundary noise. We apply the finite element method for the spatial discretization and the linear implicit Euler method for the temporal discretization. Due to the low regularity induced by the boundary noise, convergence orders above 1/2 in space and 1/4 in time cannot be expected. We prove such optimal convergence orders for our f…
Maximal parabolic $L^p$-regularity of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface is shown by pulling back the problem to the initial surface and studying the maximal $L^p$-regularity on a fixed surface. By freezing the coefficients in the parabolic equations at a fixed time and utilizing a perturbation argument around the freezed time, it is shown that backward difference time discretizations of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface along characteristic trajectories can preserve maximal $L^p$-regularity in the discrete setting. The result is applied to prove the stability an…
We propose and analyze a finite-difference discretization of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. It is known that if the discretization is made with respect to an underlying periodic lattice of spacing $δ$, the discretized functionals $Γ$-converge to the Mumford-Shah functional only if $δ\ll\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon$ being the elliptic approximation parameter of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. Discretizing with respect to stationary, ergodic and isotropic random lattices we prove this $Γ$-convergence result also for $δ\sim\varepsilon$, a regime at which the discretization with respect to …
We prove that the implicit time Euler scheme coupled with finite elements space discretization for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus subject to a random perturbation converges in $L^2(Ω)$, and describe the rate of convergence for an $H^1$-valued initial condition. This refines previous results which only established the convergence in probability of these numerical approximations. Using exponential moment estimates of the solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations and convergence of a localized scheme, we can prove strong convergence of this space-time approximation. The spee…
We consider energy stable summation by parts finite difference methods (SBP-FD) for the homogeneous and piecewise homogeneous dynamic beam equation (DBE). Previously the constant coefficient problem has been solved with SBP-FD together with penalty terms (SBP-SAT) to impose boundary conditions. In this work we revisit this problem and compare SBP-SAT to the projection method (SBP-P). We also consider the DBE with discontinuous coefficients and present novel SBP-SAT, SBP-P and hybrid SBP-SAT-P discretizations for imposing interface conditions. Numerical experiments show that all methods conside…
The paper describes the construction of entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin difference (DGD) discretizations for hyperbolic conservation laws on unstructured grids. The construction takes advantage of existing theory for entropy-stable summation-by-parts (SBP) discretizations. In particular, the paper shows how DGD discretizations -- both linear and nonlinear -- can be constructed by defining the SBP trial and test functions in terms of interpolated DGD degrees of freedom. In the case of entropy-stable discretizations, the entropy variables rather than the conservative variables must be inte…
Long-time dynamics of stochastic wave equation with dissipative damping and its full discretization: exponential ergodicity and strong law of large numbers
In Becker and Jentzen (2019) and Becker et al. (2017), an explicit temporal semi-discretization scheme and a space-time full-discretization scheme were, respectively, introduced and analyzed for the additive noise-driven stochastic Allen-Cahn type equations, with strong convergence rates recovered. The present work aims to propose a different explicit full-discrete scheme to numerically solve the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with cubic nonlinearity, perturbed by additive space-time white noise. The approximation is easily implementable, performing the spatial discretization by a spectral Gal…
