In this work we derive equivalence relations between mimetic finite difference schemes on simplicial grids and modified Nédélec-Raviart-Thomas finite element methods for model problems in $\mathbf{H}(\operatorname{\mathbf{curl}})$ and $H(\operatorname{div})$. This provides a simple and transparent way to analyze such mimetic finite difference discretizations using the well-known results from finite element theory. The finite element framework that we develop is also crucial for the design of efficient multigrid methods for mimetic finite difference discretizations, since it allows us to use canonical inter-grid transfer operators arising from the finite element framework. We provide special Local Fourier Analysis and numerical results to demonstrate the efficiency of such multigrid methods.
We introduce a mimetic dual-field discretization which conserves mass, kinetic energy and helicity for three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The discretization makes use of a conservative dual-field mixed weak formulation where two evolution equations of velocity are employed and dual representations of the solution are sought for each variable. A temporal discretization, which staggers the evolution equations and handles the nonlinearity such that the resulting discrete algebraic systems are linear and decoupled, is constructed. The spatial discretization is mimetic in the…
This paper is part of a program to combine a staggered time and staggered spatial discretization of continuum wave equations so that important properties of the continuum that are proved using vector calculus can be proven in an analogous way for the discretized system. The spatial discretizations are second order accurate and mimetic. The time discretizations second are order accurate explicit leapfrog schemes. The discretizations have a conserved quantity that guarantees stability for a reasonable constraint on the time step. The conserved quantities are closely related to the energy for the…
Maxwell's equations are a system of partial differential equations that govern the laws of electromagnetic induction. We study a mimetic finite-difference (MFD) discretization of the equations which preserves important underlying physical properties. We show that, after mass-lumping and appropriate scaling, the MFD discretization is equivalent to a structure-preserving finite-element (FE) scheme. This allows for a transparent analysis of the MFD method using the FE framework, and provides an avenue for the construction of efficient and robust linear solvers for the discretized system. In parti…

A mimetic spectral element discretization, utilizing a novel Galerkin projection Hodge star operator, of the macroscopic Maxwell equations in Hamiltonian form is presented. The idea of splitting purely topological and metric dependent quantities is natural in the Hamiltonian modeling framework as the Poisson bracket is metric free with the Hamiltonian containing all metric information. This idea may be incorporated into the mimetic spectral element method by directly discretizing the Poincaré duality structure. This "split exterior calculus mimetic spectral element method" yields spatially dis…
A framework for exponential time discretization of the multilayer rotating shallow water equations is developed in combination with a mimetic discretization in space. The method is based on a combination of existing exponential time differencing (ETD) methods and a careful choice of approximate Jacobians. The discrete Hamiltonian structure and conservation properties of the model are taken into account, in order to ensure stability of the method for large time steps and simulation horizons. In the case of many layers, further efficiency can be gained by a layer reduction which is based on the …
We present a hybrid mimetic finite-difference and virtual element formulation for coupled single-phase poromechanics on unstructured meshes. The key advantage of the scheme is that it is convergent on complex meshes containing highly distorted cells with arbitrary shapes. We use a local pressure-jump stabilization method based on unstructured macro-elements to prevent the development of spurious pressure modes in incompressible problems approaching undrained conditions. A scalable linear solution strategy is obtained using a block-triangular preconditioner designed specifically for the saddle-…
Numerical methods: mimetic finite differences and finite elements, are analyzed from a numerical point of view. It seeks to conclude on the efficiency, order of convergence and computational cost of these methods. The analysis is done in boundary value problems one-dimensional (convection-diffusion equation at steady) with different variations in the gradient, diffusion coefficient and convective velocity. Key Words: Mimetics methods, Finite Element methods, Finite differences methods, Conservative methods, Convergence.

A model of the three-dimensional rotating compressible Euler equations on the cubed sphere is presented. The model uses a mixed mimetic spectral element discretization which allows for the exact exchanges of kinetic, internal and potential energy via the compatibility properties of the chosen function spaces. A Strang carryover dimensional splitting procedure is used, with the horizontal dynamics solved explicitly and the vertical dynamics solved implicitly so as to avoid the CFL restriction of the vertical sound waves. The function spaces used to represent the horizontal dynamics are disconti…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…
Force-free plasmas are a good approximation where the plasma pressure is tiny compared with the magnetic pressure, which is the case during the cold vertical displacement event (VDE) of a major disruption in a tokamak. On time scales long compared with the transit time of Alfven waves, the evolution of a force-free plasma is most efficiently described by the quasi-static magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, which ignores the plasma inertia. Here we consider a regularized quasi-static MHD model for force-free plasmas in tokamak disruptions and propose a mimetic finite difference (MFD) algorithm. Th…

We present a comprehensive workflow to simulate single-phase flow and transport in fractured porous media using the discrete fracture matrix approach. The workflow has three primary parts: (1) a method for conforming mesh generation of and around a three-dimensional fracture network, (2) the discretization of the governing equations using a second-order mimetic finite difference method, and (3) implementation of numerical methods for high-performance computing environments. A method to create a conforming Delaunay tetrahedralization of the volume surrounding the fracture network, where the tri…

The time discretization of stochastic spectral fractional wave equation is studied by using the difference methods. Firstly, we exploit rectangle formula to get a low order time discretization, whose the strong convergence order is smaller than $1$ in the sense of mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Meanwhile, by modifying the low order method with trapezoidal rule, the convergence rate is improved at expenses of requiring some extra temporal regularity to the solution. The modified scheme has superlinear convergence rate under the mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Several numerical experiments are provided to co…
We consider an initial and Dirichlet boundary value problem for a semilinear, two dimensional heat equation over a rectangular domain. The problem is discretized in time by a version of the Relaxation Scheme proposed by C. Besse (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I, vol. 326 (1998)) for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and in space by a standard second order finite difference method. The proposed method is unconditionally well-posed and its convergence is established by proving an optimal second order error estimate allowing a mild mesh condition to hold.

Maximal parabolic $L^p$-regularity of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface is shown by pulling back the problem to the initial surface and studying the maximal $L^p$-regularity on a fixed surface. By freezing the coefficients in the parabolic equations at a fixed time and utilizing a perturbation argument around the freezed time, it is shown that backward difference time discretizations of linear parabolic equations on an evolving surface along characteristic trajectories can preserve maximal $L^p$-regularity in the discrete setting. The result is applied to prove the stability an…
We consider energy stable summation by parts finite difference methods (SBP-FD) for the homogeneous and piecewise homogeneous dynamic beam equation (DBE). Previously the constant coefficient problem has been solved with SBP-FD together with penalty terms (SBP-SAT) to impose boundary conditions. In this work we revisit this problem and compare SBP-SAT to the projection method (SBP-P). We also consider the DBE with discontinuous coefficients and present novel SBP-SAT, SBP-P and hybrid SBP-SAT-P discretizations for imposing interface conditions. Numerical experiments show that all methods conside…
The paper describes the construction of entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin difference (DGD) discretizations for hyperbolic conservation laws on unstructured grids. The construction takes advantage of existing theory for entropy-stable summation-by-parts (SBP) discretizations. In particular, the paper shows how DGD discretizations -- both linear and nonlinear -- can be constructed by defining the SBP trial and test functions in terms of interpolated DGD degrees of freedom. In the case of entropy-stable discretizations, the entropy variables rather than the conservative variables must be inte…
The scalar, one-dimensional advection equation and heat equation are considered. These equations are discretized in space, using a finite difference method satisfying summation-by-parts (SBP) properties. To impose the boundary conditions, we use a penalty method called simultaneous approximation term (SAT). Together, this gives rise to two semi-discrete schemes where the discretization matrices approximate the first and the second derivative operators, respectively. The discretization matrices depend on free parameters from the SAT treatment. We derive the inverses of the discretization matric…
We propose and analyze a finite-difference discretization of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. It is known that if the discretization is made with respect to an underlying periodic lattice of spacing $δ$, the discretized functionals $Γ$-converge to the Mumford-Shah functional only if $δ\ll\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon$ being the elliptic approximation parameter of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. Discretizing with respect to stationary, ergodic and isotropic random lattices we prove this $Γ$-convergence result also for $δ\sim\varepsilon$, a regime at which the discretization with respect to …
