Maxwell's equations are a system of partial differential equations that govern the laws of electromagnetic induction. We study a mimetic finite-difference (MFD) discretization of the equations which preserves important underlying physical properties. We show that, after mass-lumping and appropriate scaling, the MFD discretization is equivalent to a structure-preserving finite-element (FE) scheme. This allows for a transparent analysis of the MFD method using the FE framework, and provides an avenue for the construction of efficient and robust linear solvers for the discretized system. In particular, block preconditioners designed for FE formulations can be applied to the MFD system in a straightforward fashion. We present numerical tests which verify the accuracy of the MFD scheme and confirm the robustness of the preconditioners.
We introduce a mimetic dual-field discretization which conserves mass, kinetic energy and helicity for three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The discretization makes use of a conservative dual-field mixed weak formulation where two evolution equations of velocity are employed and dual representations of the solution are sought for each variable. A temporal discretization, which staggers the evolution equations and handles the nonlinearity such that the resulting discrete algebraic systems are linear and decoupled, is constructed. The spatial discretization is mimetic in the…
This paper is part of a program to combine a staggered time and staggered spatial discretization of continuum wave equations so that important properties of the continuum that are proved using vector calculus can be proven in an analogous way for the discretized system. The spatial discretizations are second order accurate and mimetic. The time discretizations second are order accurate explicit leapfrog schemes. The discretizations have a conserved quantity that guarantees stability for a reasonable constraint on the time step. The conserved quantities are closely related to the energy for the…

A mimetic spectral element discretization, utilizing a novel Galerkin projection Hodge star operator, of the macroscopic Maxwell equations in Hamiltonian form is presented. The idea of splitting purely topological and metric dependent quantities is natural in the Hamiltonian modeling framework as the Poisson bracket is metric free with the Hamiltonian containing all metric information. This idea may be incorporated into the mimetic spectral element method by directly discretizing the Poincaré duality structure. This "split exterior calculus mimetic spectral element method" yields spatially dis…
A framework for exponential time discretization of the multilayer rotating shallow water equations is developed in combination with a mimetic discretization in space. The method is based on a combination of existing exponential time differencing (ETD) methods and a careful choice of approximate Jacobians. The discrete Hamiltonian structure and conservation properties of the model are taken into account, in order to ensure stability of the method for large time steps and simulation horizons. In the case of many layers, further efficiency can be gained by a layer reduction which is based on the …
We present a hybrid mimetic finite-difference and virtual element formulation for coupled single-phase poromechanics on unstructured meshes. The key advantage of the scheme is that it is convergent on complex meshes containing highly distorted cells with arbitrary shapes. We use a local pressure-jump stabilization method based on unstructured macro-elements to prevent the development of spurious pressure modes in incompressible problems approaching undrained conditions. A scalable linear solution strategy is obtained using a block-triangular preconditioner designed specifically for the saddle-…
A model of the three-dimensional rotating compressible Euler equations on the cubed sphere is presented. The model uses a mixed mimetic spectral element discretization which allows for the exact exchanges of kinetic, internal and potential energy via the compatibility properties of the chosen function spaces. A Strang carryover dimensional splitting procedure is used, with the horizontal dynamics solved explicitly and the vertical dynamics solved implicitly so as to avoid the CFL restriction of the vertical sound waves. The function spaces used to represent the horizontal dynamics are disconti…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…
The focus of this study is the construction and numerical validation of parallel block preconditioners for low order virtual element discretizations of the three-dimensional Maxwell equations. The virtual element method (VEM) is a recent technology for the numerical approximation of partial differential equations (PDEs), that generalizes finite elements to polytopal computational grids. So far, VEM has been extended to several problems described by PDEs, and recently also to the time-dependent Maxwell equations. When the time discretization of PDEs is performed implicitly, at each time-step a …
We derive a formulation of the nonhydrostatic equations in spherical geometry with a Lorenz staggered vertical discretization. The combination conserves a discrete energy in exact time integration when coupled with a mimetic horizontal discretization. The formulation is a version of Dubos and Tort (2014) rewritten in terms of primitive variables. It is valid for terrain following mass or height coordinates and for both Eulerian or vertically Lagrangian discretizations. The discretization relies on an extension to Simmons and Burridge (1981) vertical differencing which we show obeys a discrete …
This paper proposes a fully discrete method called the symplectic dG full discretization for stochastic Maxwell equations driven by additive noises, based on a stochastic symplectic method in time and a discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method with the upwind fluxes in space. A priori $H^k$-regularity ($k\in\{1,2\}$) estimates for the solution of stochastic Maxwell equations are presented, which have not been reported before to the best of our knowledge. These $H^k$-regularities are vital to make the assumptions of the mean-square convergence analysis on the initial fields, the noise and the medium …
We consider finite element discretizations of Maxwell's equations coupled with a non-local hydrodynamic Drude model that accurately accounts for electron motions in metallic nanostructures. Specifically, we focus on a posteriori error estimation and mesh adaptivity, which is of particular interest since the electromagnetic field usually exhibits strongly localized features near the interface between metals and their surrounding media. We propose a novel residual-based error estimator that is shown to be reliable and efficient. We also present a set of numerical examples where the estimator dri…
We consider residual-based a posteriori error estimators for Galerkin-type discretizations of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. We focus on configurations where the frequency is high, or close to a resonance frequency, and derive reliability and efficiency estimates. In contrast to previous related works, our estimates are frequency-explicit. In particular, our key contribution is to show that even if the constants appearing in the reliability and efficiency estimates may blow up on coarse meshes, they become independent of the frequency for sufficiently refined meshes. Such results were prev…
Force-free plasmas are a good approximation where the plasma pressure is tiny compared with the magnetic pressure, which is the case during the cold vertical displacement event (VDE) of a major disruption in a tokamak. On time scales long compared with the transit time of Alfven waves, the evolution of a force-free plasma is most efficiently described by the quasi-static magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, which ignores the plasma inertia. Here we consider a regularized quasi-static MHD model for force-free plasmas in tokamak disruptions and propose a mimetic finite difference (MFD) algorithm. Th…
We present a novel postprocessing technique for a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of time-dependent Maxwell's equations that we couple with an explicit Runge-Kutta time-marching scheme. The postprocessed electromagnetic field converges one order faster than the unprocessed solution in the H(curl)-norm. The proposed approach is local, in the sense that the enhanced solution is computed independently in each cell of the computational mesh, and at each time step of interest. As a result, it is inexpensive to compute, especially if the region of interest is localized, either in time or …

Fourier spectral discretizations belong to the most straightforward methods for solving the unmagnetized Vlasov--Poisson system in low dimensions. In this article, this highly accurate approach is extended two the four-dimensional magnetized Vlasov--Poisson system with new splitting methods suited for strong magnetic fields. Consequently, a comparison to the asymptotic fluid model is provided at the example of a turbulent Kelvin--Helmholtz instability. For the three dimensional electromagnetic Vlasov--Maxwell system different novel charge conserving implementations of a Hamiltonian splitting a…
This paper discusses energy-conserving time-discretizations for finite element particle-in-cell discretizations of the Vlasov--Maxwell system. A geometric spatially discrete system can be obtained using a standard particle-in-cell discretization of the particle distribution and compatible finite element spaces for the fields to discretize the Poisson bracket of the Vlasov--Maxwell model (see Kraus et al., J Plasma Phys 83, 2017). In this paper, we derive energy-conserving time-discretizations based on the discrete gradient method applied to an antisymmetric splitting of the Poisson matrix. Fir…
We present a comprehensive workflow to simulate single-phase flow and transport in fractured porous media using the discrete fracture matrix approach. The workflow has three primary parts: (1) a method for conforming mesh generation of and around a three-dimensional fracture network, (2) the discretization of the governing equations using a second-order mimetic finite difference method, and (3) implementation of numerical methods for high-performance computing environments. A method to create a conforming Delaunay tetrahedralization of the volume surrounding the fracture network, where the tri…

This paper considers weak Galerkin finite element approximations for a quasistatic Maxwell viscoelastic model. The spatial discretization uses piecewise polynomials of degree $k \ (k\geq 1)$ for the stress approximation, degree $k+1$ for the velocity approximation, and degree $k$ for the numerical trace of velocity on the inter-element boundaries. The temporal discretization in the fully discrete method adopts a backward Euler difference scheme. We show the existence and uniqueness of the semi-discrete and fully discrete solutions, and derive optimal a priori error estimates. Numerical example…
We investigate structure-preserving finite element discretizations of the steady-state Stefan--Maxwell diffusion problem which governs diffusion within a phase consisting of multiple species. An approach inspired by augmented Lagrangian methods allows us to construct a symmetric positive definite augmented Onsager transport matrix, which in turn leads to an effective numerical algorithm. We prove inf-sup conditions for the continuous and discrete linearized systems and obtain error estimates for a phase consisting of an arbitrary number of species. The discretization preserves the thermodynami…
This paper is devoted to the complete convergence study of the finite-element approximation of Maxwell's equations in the case where the magnetic permeability is constant. Standard linear finite elements for the space discretization are combined with a well-known explicit finite-difference scheme for the time discretization. The analysis applies to the particular case where the dielectric permittivity has a constant value outside a sub-domain, whose closure does not intersect the boundary of the problem-definition domain. Optimal convergence results are established in natural norms under reaso…
We study the conservation properties of the Hermite-discontinuous Galerkin (Hermite-DG) approximation of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. In this semi-discrete formulation, the total mass is preserved independently for every plasma species. Further, an energy invariant exists if central numerical fluxes are used in the DG approximation of Maxwell's equations, while a dissipative term is present when upwind fluxes are employed. In general, traditional temporal integrators might fail to preserve invariants associated with conservation laws during the time evolution. Hence, we analyze the capability…
We present a low order virtual element discretization for time dependent Maxwell's equations, which allow for the use of general polyhedral meshes. Both the semi- and fully-discrete schemes are considered. We derive optimal a priori estimates and validate them on a set of numerical experiments. As pivot results, we discuss some novel inequalities for de Rahm sequences of nodal, edge, and face virtual element spaces.
Energy conserving particle-in-cell schemes are constructed for a class of reduced relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations of laser-plasma interaction. Discrete Poisson equation is also satisfied by the numerical solution. Specifically, distribution function is discretized using particle-in-cell method, discretization of electromagnetic fields is done using compatible finite element method in the framework of finite element of exterior calculus, and time discretization used is based on discrete gradient method combined with Poisson splitting. Numerical experiments of parametric instability are d…
We study the systematic numerical approximation of Maxwell's equations in dispersive media. Two discretization strategies are considered, one based on a traditional leapfrog time integration method and the other based on convolution quadrature. The two schemes are proven to be equivalent and to preserve the underlying energy-dissipation structure of the problem. The second approach, however, is independent of the number of internal states and allows to handle rather general dispersive materials. Using ideas of fast-and-oblivious convolution quadrature, the method can be implemented efficiently…
We present two strategies for designing passivity preserving higher order discretization methods for Maxwell's equations in nonlinear Kerr-type media. Both approaches are based on variational approximation schemes in space and time. This allows to rigorously prove energy conservation or dissipation, and thus passivity, on the fully discrete level. For linear media, the proposed methods coincide with certain combinations of mixed finite element and implicit Runge-Kutta schemes. The order optimal convergence rates, which can thus be expected for linear problems, are also observed for nonlinear p…
