It is well known that spectral Turán type problem is one of the most classical {problems} in graph theory. In this paper, we consider the spectral Turán type problem. Let $G$ be a graph and let $\mathcal{G}$ be a set of graphs, we say $G$ is \textit{$\mathcal{G}$-free} if $G$ does not contain any element of $\mathcal{G}$ as a subgraph. Denote by $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ the largest and the second largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$ of $G,$ respectively. In this paper we focus on the characterization of graphs without short odd cycles according to the adjacency eigenvalues of the graphs. Firstly, an upper bound on $λ_1^{2k}+λ_2^{2k}$ of $n$-vertex $\{C_3,C_5,\ldots,C_{2k+1}\}$-free graphs is established, where $k$ is a positive integer. All the corresponding extremal graphs are identified. Secondly, a sufficient condition for non-bipartite graphs containing an odd cycle of length at most $2k+1$ in terms of its spectral radius is given. At last, we characterize the unique graph having the maximum spectral radius among the set of $n$-vertex non-bipartite graphs with odd girth at least $2k+3,$ which solves an open problem proposed by Lin, Ning and Wu [Eigenvalues and triangles in graphs, Combin. Probab. Comput. 30 (2) (2021) 258-270].
The anti-adjacency matrix of a graph is constructed from the distance matrix of a graph by keeping each row and each column only the largest distances. This matrix can be interpreted as the opposite of the adjacency matrix, which is instead constructed from the distance matrix of a graph by keeping in each row and each column only the distances equal to 1. The (anti-)adjacency eigenvalues of a graph are those of its (anti-)adjacency matrix. Employing a novel technique introduced by Haemers [Spectral characterization of mixed extensions of small graphs, Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 2760--2764], we…
Let $NPO(k)$ be the smallest number $n$ such that the adjacency matrix of any undirected graph with $n$ vertices or more has at least $k$ nonpositive eigenvalues. We show that $NPO(k)$ is well-defined and prove that the values of $NPO(k)$ for $k=1,2,3,4,5$ are $1,3,6,10,16$ respectively. In addition, we prove that for all $k \geq 5$, $R(k,k+1) \ge NPO(k) > T_k$, in which $R(k,k+1)$ is the Ramsey number for $k$ and $k+1$, and $T_k$ is the $k^{th}$ triangular number. This implies new lower bounds for eigenvalues of Laplacian matrices: the $k$-th largest eigenvalue is bounded from below by the $N…
Let $G$ be a connected hypergraph with even uniformity, which contains cut vertices. Then $G$ is the coalescence of two nontrivial connected sub-hypergraphs (called branches) at a cut vertex. Let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ refers to the least real eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with a real eigenvector. In this paper we obtain a perturbation result on the least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ when a branch of $G$ attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex, and characterize the unique hypergraph whose least H…
A complex unit gain graph is a simple graph in which each orientation of an edge is given a complex number with modulus 1 and its inverse is assigned to the opposite orientation of the edge. In this article, first we establish bounds for the eigenvalues of the complex unit gain graphs. Then we study some of the properties of the adjacency matrix of complex unit gain graph in connection with the characteristic and the permanental polynomials. Then we establish spectral properties of the adjacency matrices of complex unit gain graphs. In particular, using Perron-Frobenius theory, we establish a …
We determine all graphs for which the adjacency matrix has at most two eigenvalues (multiplicities included) not equal to $-2$, or $0$, and determine which of these graphs are determined by their adjacency spectrum.
A certain signed adjacency matrix of the hypercube, which Hao Huang used last year to resolve the sensitivity conjecture, is closely related to the unique, 4-cycle free, 2-fold cover of the hypercube. We develop a framework in which this connection is a natural first example of the relationship between group labeled adjacency matrices with few eigenvalues, and combinatorially interesting covering graphs. In particular, we define a two-eigenvalue cover to be a covering graph whose adjacency spectra differs (as a multiset) from that of the graph it covers by exactly two eigenvalues. We show that…
We define a q-analog of the adjacency matrix of the n-cube, determine its eigenvalues and write down a canonical eigenbasis. We give a weighted count of the number of rooted spanning trees in the q-analog of the n-cube. Remarks on the previous version: The q-analog of the Kac matrix appears in Terwilliger's classification of Leonard pairs and as such its eigenvalues and eigenvectors were known. Reference added to Terwilliger's papers and also to a paper of Johnson. Title changed to reflect this.
We give an $O(n)$ time and space algorithm for constructing a diagonal matrix congruent to A+xI, where A is the adjacency matrix of a cograph and $x\in \mathbb{R}$. Applications include determining the number of eigenvalues of a cograph's adjacency matrix that lie in any interval, obtaining a formula for the inertia of a cograph, and exhibiting infinitely many pairs of equienergetic cographs with integer energy.
In this paper, we discuss various connections between the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph and its structure. There are several techniques for obtaining upper bounds on the smallest eigenvalue, and some of them are based on Rayleigh quotients, Cauchy interlacing using induced subgraphs, and Haemers interlacing with vertex partitions and quotient matrices. In this paper, we are interested in obtaining lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalue. Motivated by results on line graphs and generalized line graphs, we show how graph decompositions can be used to obtain such lower b…
In this article we investigate normalized adjacency eigenvalues (simply normalized eigenvalues) and normalized adjacency energy of connected threshold graphs. A threshold graph can always be represented as a unique binary string. Certain eigenvalues are obtained directly from its binary representation and the rest of the eigenvalues are evaluated from its normalized equitable partition matrix. Finally, we characterize threshold graphs with at most five distinct eigenvalues.
In order to investigate the non-odd-bipartiteness of even uniform hypergraphs, starting from a simple graph $G$, we construct a generalized power of $G$, denoted by $G^{k,s}$, which is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into a $k$-set and each edge into a $(k-2s)$-set, where $s \le k/2$. When $s < k/2$, $G^{k,s}$ is always odd-bipartite. We show that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite if and only if $G$ is non-bipartite, and find that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ has the same adjacency (respectively, signless Laplacian) spectral radius as $G$. So the results involving the adjacency or si…
The traditional adjacency matrix of a mixed graph is not symmetric in general, hence its eigenvalues may be not real. To overcome this obstacle, several authors have recently defined and studied various Hermitian adjacency matrices of digraphs or mixed graphs. In this work we unify previous work and offer a new perspective on the subject by introducing the concept of monographs. Moreover, we consider questions of cospectrality.
The generalized power of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $G^{k,s}$, is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into an $s$-set and each edge into a $k$-set, where $1 \le s \le \frac{k}{2}$. When $s < \frac{k}{2}$, $G^{k,s}$ is always odd-bipartite. It is known that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite if and only if $G$ is non-bipartite, and $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ has the same adjacency (respectively, signless Laplacian) spectral radius as $G$. In this paper, we prove that, regardless of multiplicities, the $H$-spectrum of $\A(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})$ (respectively, $\Q(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})$) con…
In this paper, we discuss the adjacency matrices of finite undirected simple graphs over a finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. We apply symmetric (row and column) elementary transformations to the adjacency matrix over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in order to get a direct sum decomposition by other adjacency matrices. In this paper, we give a complete description of the direct sum decomposition of the adjacency matrix of any graph over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for any odd prime $p$. Our key tool is quadratic residues of $\mathbb{F}_p$.
This paper deals with adjacency matrices of signed cycle graphs and chemical descriptors based on them. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrices are calculated and their efficacy in classifying different signed cycles is determined. The efficacy of some numerical indices is also examined.
New criteria for which Cayley graphs of cyclic groups of any order can be completely determined--up to isomorphism--by the eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices is presented. Secondly, a new construction for pairs of nonisomorphic Cayley graphs of cyclic groups with the same list of eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices will be presented.
We give inequalities relating the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix and the Laplacian of a graph, and its minimum and maximum degrees. The results are applied to derive new conditions for quasi-randomness of graphs.
In this paper, we define and obtain several properties of the (adjacency) energy of a hypergraph. In particular, bounds for this energy are obtained as functions of structural and spectral parameters, such as Zagreb index and spectral radius. We also study how the energy of a hypergraph varies when a vertex/edge is removed or when an edge is divied. In addition, we solved the extremal problem energy for the class of hyperstars, and show that the energy of a hypergraph is never an odd number.
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with domination number $γ(G)$. Wang, Yan, Fang, Geng and Tian [Linear Algebra Appl. 607 (2020), 307-318] showed that for any Laplacian eigenvalue $λ$ of $G$ with multiplicity $m_G(λ)$, it holds that $γ(G)\leq n-m_G(λ)$. Using techniques from the theory of star sets, in this work we prove that the same bound holds when $λ$ is an arbitrary adjacency eigenvalue of a non-regular graph, and we characterize the cases of equality. Moreover, we show a result that gives a relationship between start sets and the $p$-domination number, and we apply it to extend t…
For every real $0\leq α\leq 1$, Nikiforov defined the $A_α$-matrix of a graph $G$ as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$, where $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ are the adjacency matrix and the degree diagonal matrix of a graph $G$, respectively. The eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ are called the $A_α$-eigenvalues of $G$. Let $S_k(A_α(G))$ be the sum of $k$ largest $A_α$-eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we present several upper and lower bounds on $S_k(A_α(G))$ and characterize the extremal graphs for certain cases, which can be regard as a common generalization of the sum of $k$ largest eigenvalues of adjacency matrix and s…
Let $G$ be a connected non-odd-bipartite hypergraph with even uniformity. The least H-eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian tensor of $G$ is simply called the least eigenvalue of $G$ and the corresponding H-eigenvectors are called the first eigenvectors of $G$. In this paper we give some numerical and structural properties about the first eigenvectors of $G$ which contains an odd-bipartite branch, and investigate how the least eigenvalue of $G$ changes when an odd-bipartite branch attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex. We characterize the hypergraph(s) whose least eigenvalue att…
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. The adjacency and Laplacian eigenvalues of an oriented hypergraph are studied. Eigenvalue bounds for both the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph which depend on structural parameters of the oriented hypergraph are found. An oriented hypergraph and its incidence dual are shown to have the same nonzero Laplacian eigenvalues. A family of oriented hypergraphs with uniformally labeled incidences is also studied. This family provides a hypergraphic generalization of the s…
The $α$-Hermitian adjacency matrix $H_α$ of a mixed graph $X$ has been recently introduced. It is a generalization of the adjacency matrix of unoriented graphs. In this paper, we consider a special case of the complex number $α$. This enables us to define an incidence matrix of mixed graphs. Consequently, we define a generalization of line graphs as well as a generalization of the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of graphs. We then study the spectral properties of the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of a mixed graph. Lastly, we characterize when the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix o…
A mixed graph is called \emph{second kind hermitian integral}(or \emph{HS-integral}) if the eigenvalues of its Hermitian-adjacency matrix of second kind are integers. A mixed graph is called \emph{Eisenstein integral} if the eigenvalues of its (0, 1)-adjacency matrix are Eisenstein integers. We characterize the set $S$ for which a mixed circulant graph $\text{Circ}(\mathbb{Z}_n, S)$ is HS-integral. We also show that a mixed circulant graph is Eisenstein integral if and only if it is HS-integral. Further, the eigenvalues and the HS-eigenvalues of some oriented circulant graphs are expressed in …
A graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix consist entirely of integers. Recently, Csikvari proved the existence of integral trees of any even diameter. In the odd case, integral trees have been constructed with diameter at most 7. In this paper, we show that for every odd integer n > 1, there are infinitely many integral trees of diameter n.
In this paper we study the local law for eigenvalues of large random regular bipartite graphs with degree growing arbitrarily fast. We prove that the empirical spectral distribution of the adjacency matrix converges to a scaled down copy of the Marchenko - Pastur distribution on intervals of short length.
For a given complex square matrix $A$ with constant row sum, we establish two new eigenvalue inclusion sets. Using these bounds, first we derive bounds for the second largest and smallest eigenvalues of adjacency matrices of $k$-regular graphs. Then, we establish some bounds for the second largest and the smallest eigenvalues of the normalized adjacency matrices of graphs and the second smallest eigenvalue and the largest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrices of graphs. Sharpness of these bounds are verified by examples.
This paper deals with the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices of threshold graphs for which $-1$ and $0$ are considered as trivial eigenvalues. We show that threshold graphs have no non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $\left[(-1-\sqrt{2})/2,\,(-1+\sqrt{2})/2\right]$. This confirms a conjecture by Aguilar, Lee, Piato, and Schweitzer (2018).
In this article we examine the adjacency and Laplacian matrices and their eigenvalues and energies of the general product (non-complete extended $p$-sum, or NEPS) of signed graphs. We express the adjacency matrix of the product in terms of the Kronecker matrix product and the eigenvalues and energy of the product in terms of those of the factor signed graphs. For the Cartesian product we characterize balance and compute expressions for the Laplacian eigenvalues and Laplacian energy. We give exact results for those signed planar, cylindrical and toroidal grids which are Cartesian products of si…
Let $τ(G)$ and $κ'(G)$ denote the edge-connectivity and the spanning tree packing number of a graph $G$, respectively. Proving a conjecture initiated by Cioaba and Wong, Liu et al. in 2014 showed that for any simple graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ\ge 2k \ge 4$, if the second largest adjacency eigenvalue of $G$ satisfies $λ_2(G) < δ- \frac{2k-1}{δ+1}$, then $τ(G) \ge k$. Similar results involving the Laplacian eigenvalues and the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ are also obtained. In this paper, we find a function $f(δ, k, g)$ such that for every graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ\ge 2k \ge…
Let $G$ be a simple graph and $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of $G$. The matrix $S(G) = J -I -2A(G)$ is called the Seidel matrix of $G$, where $I$ is an identity matrix and $J$ is a square matrix all of whose entries are equal to 1. Clearly, if $G$ is a graph of order $n$ with no isolated vertex, then the Seidel matrix of $G$ is also the adjacency matrix of a signed complete graph $K_n$ whose negative edges induce $G$. In this paper, we study the Seidel eigenvalues of the complete multipartite graph $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ and investigate its Seidel characteristic polynomial. We show that if ther…
We complete the determination of the signed graphs for which the adjacency matrix has all but at most two eigenvalues equal to $\pm 1$. The unsigned graphs and the disconnected, the bipartite and the complete signed graphs with this property have already been determined in two earlier papers. Here we deal with the remaining cases.
We present progress on the problem of asymptotically describing the adjacency eigenvalues of random and complete uniform hypergraphs. There is a natural conjecture arising from analogy with random matrix theory that connects these spectra to that of the all-ones hypermatrix. Several of the ingredients along a possible path to this conjecture are established, and may be of independent interest in spectral hypergraph/hypermatrix theory. In particular, we provide a bound on the spectral radius of the symmetric Bernoulli hyperensemble, and show that the spectrum of the complete \(k\)-uniform hyper…
The paper gives a thorough introduction to spectra of digraphs via its Hermitian adjacency matrix. This matrix is indexed by the vertices of the digraph, and the entry corresponding to an arc from $x$ to $y$ is equal to the complex unity $i$ (and its symmetric entry is $-i$) if the reverse arc $yx$ is not present. We also allow arcs in both directions and unoriented edges, in which case we use $1$ as the entry. This allows to use the definition also for mixed graphs. This matrix has many nice properties; it has real eigenvalues and the interlacing theorem holds for a digraph and its induced su…
One of the best known results in spectral graph theory is the following lower bound on the chromatic number due to Alan Hoffman, where mu_1 and mu_n are respectively the maximum and minimum eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix: chi >= 1 + mu_1 / (- mu_n). We recently generalised this bound to include all eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. In this paper, we further generalize these results to include all eigenvalues of the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices. The various known bounds are also unified by considering the normalized adjacency matrix, and examples are cited for wh…
Let $Γ$ denote an undirected, connected, regular graph with vertex set $X$, adjacency matrix $A$, and ${d+1}$ distinct eigenvalues. Let ${\mathcal A}={\mathcal A}(Γ)$ denote the subalgebra of Mat$_X({\mathbb C})$ generated by $A$. We refer to ${\mathcal A}$ as the {\it adjacency algebra} of $Γ$. In this paper we investigate algebraic and combinatorial structure of $Γ$ for which the adjacency algebra ${\mathcal A}$ is closed under Hadamard multiplication. In particular, under this simple assumption, we show the following: (i) ${\mathcal A}$ has a standard basis $\{I,F_1,\ldots,F_d\}$; (ii) for …
An odd $[1,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for each vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is odd and $1\le d_H(v) \le b$. Let $λ_3(G)$ be the third largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. For positive integers $r \ge 3$ and even $n$, Lu, Wu, and Yang [10] proved a lower bound for $λ_3(G)$ in an $n$-vertex $r$-regular graph $G$ to gurantee the existence of an odd $[1,b]$-factor in $G$. In this paper, we improve the bound; it is sharp for every $r$.
The eccentricity (anti-adjacency) matrix $\varepsilon(G)$ of a graph $G$ is obtained from the distance matrix by retaining the eccentricities in each row and each column. This matrix is first defined in 2018 by Wang et al. \cite{1}. In this paper we have characterized the graphs which have at most one (hence exactly) positive eigenvalue of $\varepsilon(G)$.
We present the first steps towards the determination of the signed graphs for which the adjacency matrix has all but at most two eigenvalues equal to 1 or -1. Here we deal with the disconnected, the bipartite and the complete signed graphs. In addition, we present many examples which cannot be obtained from an unsigned graph or its negative by switching.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a uniform hypergraph. Let $\mathcal{A(H)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(H)}$ be the adjacency tensor and the signless Laplacian tensor of $\mathcal{H}$, respectively. In this note we prove several bounds for the spectral radius of $\mathcal{A(H)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(H)}$ in terms of the degrees of vertices of $\mathcal{H}.$
The purpose of this article is to improve existing lower bounds on the chromatic number chi. Let mu_1,...,mu_n be the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix sorted in non-increasing order. First, we prove the lower bound chi >= 1 + max_m {sum_{i=1}^m mu_i / - sum_{i=1}^m mu_{n-i+1}} for m=1,...,n-1. This generalizes the Hoffman lower bound which only involves the maximum and minimum eigenvalues, i.e., the case $m=1$. We provide several examples for which the new bound exceeds the {\sc Hoffman} lower bound. Second, we conjecture the lower bound chi >= 1 + S^+ / S^-, where S^+ and S^- are the sums …
For a graph $G$, let $L(G)$ and $Q(G)$ be the Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices of $G$, respectively, and $τ(G)$ be the number of spanning trees of $G$. We prove that if $G$ has an odd number of vertices and $τ(G)$ is not divisible by $4$, then (i) $L(G)$ has no even integer eigenvalue, (ii) $Q(G)$ has no integer eigenvalue $λ\equiv2\pmod4$, and (iii) $Q(G)$ has at most one eigenvalue $λ\equiv0\pmod4$ and such an eigenvalue is simple. As a consequence, we extend previous results by Gutman and Sciriha and by Bapat on the nullity of adjacency matrices of the line graphs. We also show tha…
Let $n$ be any positive integer and let $F_n$ be the friendship (or Dutch windmill) graph with $2n+1$ vertices and $3n$ edges. Here we study graphs with the same adjacency spectrum as the $F_n$. Two graphs are called cospectral if the eigenvalues multiset of their adjacency matrices are the same. Let $G$ be a graph cospectral with $F_n$. Here we prove that if $G$ has no cycle of length 4 or 5, then $G\cong F_n$. Moreover if $G$ is connected and planar then $G\cong F_n$. All but one of connected components of $G$ are isomorphic to $K_2$. The complement $\bar{F_n}$ of the friendship graph is det…
Let $(G,w)$ be a weighted graph with a weight-function $w: E(G)\to \mathbb R\backslash\{0\}$. A weighted graph $(G,w)$ is invertible to a new weighted graph if its adjacency matrix is invertible. A graph inverse has combinatorial interest and can be applied to bound median eigenvalues of a graph such as have physical meanings in Quatumn Chemistry. In this paper, we characterize the inverse of a weighted graph based on its Sachs subgraphs that are spanning subgraphs with only $K_2$ or cycles (or loops) as components. The characterization can be used to find the inverse of a weighted graph based…
