Classical orthogonal polynomials have widespread applications including in numerical integration, solving differential equations, and interpolation. Changing basis between classical orthogonal polynomials can affect the convergence, accuracy, and stability of solutions.
We provide a general method for changing basis between any pair of classical orthogonal polynomials by using algebraic expressions called coefficient functions that evaluate to connection coefficients. The method builds directly on previous work on the change of basis groupoid. The scope has fifteen kinds of classical orthogonal polynomials including the classes of Jacobi, Gegenbauer and generalized Laguerre polynomials.
The method involves the mappings to and from the monomials for these polynomial bases. Sixteen coefficient functions appear to be new for polynomials that do not have definite parity. We derive the remainder from seven sources in the literature. We give a complete summary of thirty coefficient functions.
This enables change of basis to be defined algebraically and uniformly between any pair of classical orthogonal polynomial bases by using a vector dot product to compose two coefficient functions to give a third.
A definition of Jacobi polynomials uses a basis of shifted monomials. We find a key new mapping between the monomials and Jacobi polynomials by using a general mapping between shifted monomials and monomials. It yields new mappings for the Chebyshev polynomials of the third and fourth kinds and their shifted versions.
Mehler-Heine asymptotics describe the behavior of orthogonal polynomials near the edges of the interval where the orthogonality measure is supported. For Jacobi polynomials and Laguerre polynomials this asymptotic behavior near the hard edge involves Bessel functions $J_α$. We show that the asymptotic behavior near the endpoint of the interval of (one of) the measures for multiple orthogonal polynomials involves a generalization of the Bessel function. The multiple orthogonal polynomials considered are Jacobi-Angelesco polynomials, Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials, multiple Laguerre polynomials, mul…
In this paper Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the simplex is presented. A new family of multivariate orthogonal functions is obtained by using the Parseval's identity and several recurrence relations are derived.
Orthogonal polynomials and multiple orthogonal polynomials are interesting special functions because there is a beautiful theory for them, with many examples and useful applications in mathematical physics, numerical analysis, statistics and probability and many other disciplines. In these notes we give an introduction to the use of orthogonal polynomials in random matrix theory, we explain the notion of multiple orthogonal polynomials, and we show the link with certain non-linear difference and differential equations known as Painlevé equations.
The purpose of this paper is to find the characterization of the Sheffer polynomial sets satisfying the d-orthogonality conditions. The generating function form of these polynomial sets is given in Theorem 2.2. As applications of the Theorem 2.2, we revisit the d-orthogonal polynomial sets exist in the literature and discover new d-orthogonal polynomial sets. Moreover, we obtain the d-dimensional functional vector ensuring the d-orthogonality of these new polynomial sets.
We study two families of orthogonal polynomials. The first is a finite family related to the Askey-Wilson polynomials but the orthogonality is on the real line. A limiting case of this family is an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials whose moment problem is indeterminate. We provide several orthogonality measures for the infinite family and derive their Plancherel-Rotach asymptotics.
The study of $-1$ orthogonal polynomials viewed as $q =-1$ limits of the $q$-orthogonal polynomials is pursued. This paper present the continuous polynomials part of the $-1$ analog of the $q$-Askey scheme. A compendium of the properties of all the continuous $-1$ hypergeometric polynomials and their connections is provided.
We give a survey of the connection between orthogonal polynomials, Toda lattices and related lattices, and Painlevé equations (discrete and continuous).
Classical orthogonal polynomial systems of Jacobi, Hermite and Laguerre have the property that the polynomials of each system are eigenfunctions of a second order ordinary differential operator. According to a famous theorem by Bochner they are the only systems on the real line with this property. Similar results hold for the discrete orthogonal polynomials. In a recent paper we introduced a natural class of polynomial systems whose members are the eigenfunctions of a differential operator of higher order and which are orthogonal with respect to d measures, rather than one. These polynomial sy…
Morales-Mendoza et al. present in 2013 a new class of discrete orthogonal polynomials. They use these polynomials to design an unbiased FIR filter. In their paper they make the statement that a representation of the polynomials via hypergeometric functions is unknown. However Shakibaei Asli et al. found in 2017 a $_3F_2$ hypergeometric function representation. In this paper it is shown that the "new" orthogonal polynomials belong to the class of the Hahn polynomials. The transfer function of the unbiased FIR filter has been determined. In the second part, an orthogonal unbiased FIR filter is d…
Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball are obtained. By using Parseval's identity, a new family of multivariate orthogonal functions are introduced. The results are expressed in terms of the continuous Hahn polynomials.
In this contribution, discrete semiclassical orthogonal polynomials of class $s\leq2$ are studied. By considering all possible solutions of the Pearson equation, we obtain the canonical families in each class. We also consider limit relations between these and other families of orthogonal polynomials.
We describe bivariate polynomial sequences orthogonal to a symmetric weight function in terms of several bivariate polynomial sequences orthogonal with respect to Christoffel transformations of the initial weight under a quadratic transformation. We analyze the construction of a symmetric bivariate orthogonal polynomial sequence from a given one, orthogonal to a weight function defined on the positive plane. In this description plays an important role a sort of Backlund type matrix transformations for the involved three term matrix coefficients. We take as a case study relations between symmet…
We give a remarkable additional orthogonality property of the classical Legendre polynomials on the real interval $[-1,1]$: polynomials up to degree $n$ from this family are mutually orthogonal under the arcsine measure weighted by the degree-$n$ normalized Christoffel function.
We introduce a new family of orthogonal polynomials on the disk that has emerged in the context of wave propagation in layered media. Unlike known examples, the polynomials are orthogonal with respect to a measure all of whose even moments are infinite.
This paper derives sparse recurrence relations between orthogonal polynomials on a triangle and their partial derivatives, which are analogous to recurrence relations for Jacobi polynomials. We derive these recurrences in a systematic fashion by introducing ladder operators that map an orthogonal polynomial to another by incrementing or decrementing its associated parameters by one.
We present determinantal formulas for families of exceptional $X_m$-Laguerre and exceptional $X_m$-Jacobi polynomials and also for exceptional $X_2$-Hermite polynomials. The formulas resemble Vandermonde determinants and use the zeros of the classical orthogonal polynomials.
Orthogonal polynomials and the Fourier orthogonal series on a cone of revolution in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ are studied. It is shown that orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $(1-t)^γ(t^2-\|x\|^2)^{μ-\frac12}$ on the cone $\mathbb{V}^{d+1} = \{(x,t): \|x\| \le t \le 1\}$ are eigenfunctions of a second order differential operator, with eigenvalues depending only on the degree of the polynomials, and the reproducing kernels of these polynomials satisfy a closed formula that has a one-dimensional chacteristic. The latter leads to a convolution structure on the cone, which is then…
A new method of composition orthogonality is introduced. It is applied to generate new sequences of orthogonal polynomials and functions. In particular, classical orthogonal polynomials are interpreted in the sense of composition orthogonality. Finally, new sequences of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $x^αρ^2_ν(x), ρ_ν(x)= 2 x^{ν/2} K_ν(2\sqrt x),\ x >0, ν\ge 0, α> -1$, where $K_ν(z)$ is the modified Bessel function or Macdonald function, are investigated. Differential properties, recurrence relations, explicit representations, generating functions and Rodrigues-type…
We use connection relations and series rearrangement to generalize generating functions for several higher continuous orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme, namely the Wilson, continuous dual Hahn, continuous Hahn, and Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. We also determine corresponding definite integrals using the orthogonality relations for these polynomials.
The purpose of this note is to extend in a simple and unified way some results on orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $$\frac{|T_m(x)|^p}{\sqrt{1-x^2}}\;,\quad-1<x<1\;,$$ where $T_m$ is the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind of degree $m$ and $p>-1$.
We present a method to obtain weight functions associated with linear and quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional of the orthogonal polynomial sequences in the Askey scheme, with the exception of the Jacobi, Bessel, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials.
A generic differential operator on the vectorial space of polynomial functions was presented in a recent work and applied in the study of differential relations fulfilled by polynomial sequences either orthogonal or 2-orthogonal. Using the techniques therein developed, we prove an identity fulfilled by different differential operators and apply it in a systematic approach to the problem of finding polynomial eigenfunctions, assuming that those polynomials constitute a 2-orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, we analyse a third order differential operator that does not increase the degr…
The purpose of this work is to analyse a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which includes an additional term on the sphere. First, we will get connection formulas relating classical multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the ball with our family of orthogonal polynomials. Then, using the representation of these polynomials in terms of spherical harmonics, algebraic and differential properties will be deduced.
The polynomials $p_n$ orthogonal on the interval $[-1,1],$ normalized by $p_n(1)=1,$ satisfy Turán's inequality if $p_n^2(x)-p_{n-1}(x)p_{n+1}(x)\ge 0$ for $n\ge 1$ and for all $x$ in the interval of orthogonality. We give a general criterion for orthogonal polynomials to satisfy Turán's inequality. This extends essentially the results of \cite{szw}. In particular the results can be applied to many classes of orthogonal polynomials, by inspecting their recurrence relation.
We develop a theory of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the Sierpiński gasket ($SG$). These orthogonal polynomials arise through the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalisation process applied on the set of monomials on $SG$ using several notions of a Sobolev inner products. After establishing some recurrence relations for these orthogonal polynomials, we give estimates for their $L^2$, $L^\infty$ and Sobolev norms, and study their asymptotic behaviour. Finally, we study the properties of zero sets of polynomials and develop fast computational tools to explore applications to quadrature and interpolation.
We investigate the interlacing of zeros of polynomials of different degrees within the sequences of $q$-Laguerre polynomials $\left\{\tilde{L}_n^{(δ)}(z;q)\right\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ characterized by $δ\in(-2,-1).$ The interlacing of zeros of quasi-orthogonal polynomials $\tilde{L}_n^{(δ)}(z;q)$ with those of the orthogonal polynomials $\tilde{L}_m^{(δ+t)}(z;q), m,n\in\mathbb{N}, t\in\{1,2\}$ is also considered. New bounds for the least zero of the (order $1$) quasi-orthogonal $q$-Laguerre polynomials are derived.
