We study local-global principles for torsors under reductive linear algebraic groups over semi-global fields; i.e., over one variable function fields over complete discretely valued fields. We provide conditions on the group and the semiglobal field under which the local-global principle holds, and we compute the obstruction to the local-global principle in certain classes of examples. Using our description of the obstruction, we give the first example of a semisimple simply connected group over a semi-global field where the local-global principle fails. Our methods include patching and R-equivalence.
Let $K$ be a global field of positive characteristic. We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle, to weak approximation and to strong approximation are the only ones for homogeneous spaces of reductive groups with reductive stabilizers. The methods involve abelianization techniques and arithmetic duality theorems for complexes of tori over K.
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, and let G be an algebraic reductive complex group. We define the notion of principal G-sheaf, that generalises the notion of principal G-bundle. Then we define a notion of semistability, and construct the projective moduli space of semistable principal G-sheaves on X. This is a natural compactification of the moduli space of principal G-bundles. This is the announcement note presented by the second author in the conference held at Catania (11-13 April 2001), dedicated to the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.
Let R be a semi-local regular domain containing an infinite perfect field k, and let K be the field of fractions of R. Let G be a reductive semi-simple simply connected R-group scheme such that each of its R-indecomposable factors is isotropic. We prove that for any Noetherian affine scheme A over k, the kernel of the map of etale cohomology sets H^1(A\times_k R,G)-> H^1(A\times_ k K,G), induced by the inclusion of R into K, is trivial. If R is the semi-local ring of several points on a k-smooth scheme, then it suffices to require that k is infinite and keep the same assumption concerning G.
A linear algebraic group G defined over a field k is called special if every G-torsor over every field extension of k is trivial. In 1958 Grothendieck classified special groups in the case where the base field is algebraically closed. In this paper we describe the derived subgroup and the coradical of a special reductive group over an arbitrary field k. We also classify special semisimple groups, special reductive groups of inner type and special quasisplit reductive groups over an arbitrary field k.
In this article, a logahoric Higgs torsor is defined as a parahoric torsor with a logarithmic Higgs field. For a connected complex reductive group $G$, we introduce a notion of stability for logahoric $\mathcal{G}_{\boldsymbolθ}$-Higgs torsors on a smooth algebraic curve $X$, where $\mathcal{G}_{\boldsymbolθ}$ is a parahoric group scheme on $X$. In the case when the group $G$ is the general linear group ${\rm GL}_n$, we show that the stability condition of a parahoric torsor is equivalent to the stability of a parabolic bundle. A correspondence between semistable logahoric $\mathcal{G}_{\bolds…
We study equivariant projective compactifications of reductive groups obtained by closing the image of a group in the space of operators of a projective representation. We describe the structure and the mutual position of their orbits under the action of the doubled group by left/right multiplications, the local structure in a neighborhood of a closed orbit, and obtain some conditions of normality and smoothness of a compactification. Our methods of research use the theory of equivariant embeddings of spherical homogeneous spaces and of reductive algebraic semigroups.
For a reductive group scheme $G$ over a semilocal Dedekind ring $R$ with total ring of fractions $K$, we prove that no nontrivial $G$-torsor trivializes over $K$. This generalizes a result of Nisnevich-Tits, who settled the case when $R$ is local. Their result, in turn, is a special case of a conjecture of Grothendieck-Serre that predicts the same over any regular local ring. With a patching technique and weak approximation in the style of Harder, we reduce to the case when $R$ is a complete discrete valuation ring. Afterwards, we consider Levi subgroups to reduce to the case when $G$ is semis…
In a series of papers [Pan0], [Pan1], [Pan2], [Pan3] we give a detailed and better structured proof of the Grothendieck--Serre's conjecture for semi-local regular rings containing a finite field. The outline of the proof is the same as in [P1],[P2],[P3]. If the semi-local regular ring contains an infinite field, then the conjecture is proved in [FP]. Thus the conjecture is true for regular local rings containing a field. The present paper is the one [Pan1] in that new series. Theorem 1.1 is one of the main result of the paper. It is also one of the key steps in the proof of the Grothendieck--S…
Based on the work of Conrad-Gabber-Prasad, the paper deals with the geometry of particular pseudo-semisimple groups, namely those which can be written as quotient of Weil restriction of semisimple groups. We establish that these groups are retract rational when their are split, and give results on their Picard groups.
For a reductive group scheme over a regular semi-local ring, we prove an equivarinat version of the Gersten conjecture. We draw some interesting consequences for the representation rings of such reductive group schemes. We also prove the rigidity for the equivariant K-theory of reductive group schemes over a henselian local ring. This is then used to compute the equivariant K-theory of algebraically closed fields.
Let $R$ be a regular semilocal integral domain containing an infinite field $k$. Let $f\in R$ be an element such that for all maximal ideals $\mathfrak m$ of $R$ we have $f\notin\mathfrak m^2$. Let $\mathbf G$ be a reductive group scheme over $R$. Under an isotropy assumption on $\mathbf G$ we show that a $\mathbf G$-torsor over the localization $R_f$ is trivial, provided it is rationally trivial. We show that it is not true without the isotropy assumption. Finally, if $\mathbf G$ is a commutative group scheme of multiplicative type and the regular semilocal ring contains a field of characteri…
We extend the methods of geometric invariant theory to actions of non--reductive groups in the case of homomorphisms between decomposable sheaves whose automorphism groups are non--reductive. Given a linearization of the natural action of the group $\Aut(E)\times\Aut(F)$ on Hom(E,F), a homomorphism is called stable if its orbit with respect to the unipotent radical is contained in the stable locus with respect to the natural reductive subgroup of the automorphism group. We encounter effective numerical conditions for a linearization such that the corresponding open set of semi-stable homomorph…
We study linear actions of algebraic groups on smooth projective varieties X. A guiding goal for us is to understand the cohomology of "quotients" under such actions, by generalizing (from reductive to non-reductive group actions) existing methods involving Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). We concentrate on actions of unipotent groups H, and define sets of stable points X^s and semistable points X^{ss}, often explicitly computable via the methods of reductive GIT, which reduce to the standard definitions due to Mumford in the case of reductive actions. We compare these with definiti…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a perfect field $k$. We study a certain normal reductive monoid $\overline M$ associated to a parabolic $k$-subgroup $P$ of $G$. The group of units of $\overline M$ is the Levi factor $M$ of $P$. We show that $\overline M$ is a retract of the affine closure of the quasi-affine variety $G/U(P)$. Fixing a parabolic $P^-$ opposite to $P$, we prove that the affine closure of $G/U(P)$ is a retract of the affine closure of the boundary degeneration $(G \times G)/(P \times_M P^-)$. Using idempotents, we relate $\overline M$ to the Vinberg semigroup of $G$. …
In this paper we study the extension of structure group of principal bundles with a reductive algebraic group as structure group on smooth projective varieties defined over algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Our main result is to show that given a representation ρ of a reductive algebraic group G, there exists an integer t such that any semistable G-bundle whose first t frobenius pullbacks are semistable induces a semistable vector bundle on extension of structure group via ρ. Moreover we quantify the number of such frobenius pullbacks required.
In this semi-expository paper we review the notion of a spherical space. In particular we present some recent results of Wedhorn on the classification of spherical spaces over arbitrary fields. As an application, we introduce and classify reductive monoid spaces over an arbitrary field.
The goal of this paper is to extend the standard invariant-theoretic design, well-developed in the reductive case, to the setting of representation of certain non-reductive groups. This concerns the following notions and results: the existence of generic stabilisers and generic isotropy groups for finite-dimensional representations; structure of the fields and algebras of invariants; quotient morphisms and structure of their fibres. One of the main tools for obtaining non-reductive Lie algebras is the semi-direct product construction. We observe that there are surprisingly many non-reductive L…
Let k be a field of characteristic 0. Let G be a reductive group over the ring of Laurent polynomials R=k[x_1^{\pm 1},...,x_n^{\pm 1}]. We prove that G has isotropic rank >=1 over R iff it has isotropic rank >=1 over the field of fractions k(x_1,...,x_n) of R, and if this is the case, then the natural map H^1_{et}(R,G)\to H^1_{\et}(k(x_1,...,x_n),G) has trivial kernel, and G is loop reductive, i.e. contains a maximal R-torus. In particular, we settle in positive the conjecture of V. Chernousov, P. Gille, and A. Pianzola that H^1_{Zar}(R,G)=* for such groups G. We also deduce that if G is a red…
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group---possibly non-connected---over a field $k$ and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. If $G= GL_n$ then there is a degeneration process for obtaining from $H$ a completely reducible subgroup $H'$ of $G$; one takes a limit of $H$ along a cocharacter of $G$ in an appropriate sense. We generalise this idea to arbitrary reductive $G$ using the notion of $G$-complete reducibility and results from geometric invariant theory over non-algebraically closed fields due to the authors and Herpel. Our construction produces a $G$-completely reducible subgroup $H'$ of $G$, uniq…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic not $2$. We give a positive answer to Serre's injectivity question for any smooth connected reductive $k$-group whose Dynkin diagram contains connected components only of type $A_n$, $B_n$ or $C_n$. We do this by relating Serre's question to the norm principles proved by Barquero and Merkurjev. We give a scalar obstruction defined up to spinor norms whose vanishing will imply the norm principle for the non-trialitarian $D_{n}$ case and yield a positive answer to Serre's question for connected reductive $k$-groups whose Dynkin diagrams contain components of …
We show that for a reductive group $G$ over a field $k$ the $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of the variety of maximal tori in $G$ is an invertible element of the Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}(k)$, settling the weak form of a conjecture by Fabien Morel. As an application we obtain a generalized splitting principle which allows one to reduce the structure group of a Nisnevich locally trivial $G$-torsor to the normalizer of a maximal torus.
The motivation of this work is to construct an analog of compactified moduli of abelian varieties and toric pairs in the case of non-commutative algebraic group G. We introduce a class of "stable reductive varieties" which contain connected reductive groups and their equivariant compactifications, and is closed under flat reduced degenerations. We classify them all, describe their degenerations, and establish a connection between these varieties and "reductive semigroups" which we also define. Finally, we construct a Hilbert scheme of embedded G-varieties by applying and generalizing a constru…
Let k be an infinite field. Let R be the semi-local ring of a finite family of closed points on a k-smooth affine irreducible variety, let K be the fraction field of R, and let G be a reductive simple simply connected R-group scheme isotropic over R. We prove that for any Noetherian k-algebra A, the map of etale cohomology sets H^1(A\otimes_k R,G)-> H^1(A\otimes_ k K,G), induced by the inclusion of R into K, has trivial kernel. This implies the Serre-Grothendieck conjecture for such groups G. The main theorem for A=k and some other results of the present paper are used significantly in arXiv:1…
We introduce the notion of a quasi-connected reductive group over an arbitrary field to be an almost direct product of a connected semisimple group and a quasi-torus (a smooth group of multiplicative type). We show that a linear algebraic group is quasi-connected reductive if and only if it is isomorphic to a smooth normal subgroup of a connected reductive group.
We give another proof that a reductive algebraic group is geometrically reductive. We show that a quotient of the semi-stable locus (by a linear action of a reductive algebraic group on a projective scheme) exists, and from this Haboush's Theorem (Mumford's Conjecture) follows.
Let $G$ be a complex reductive algebraic group, $g$ its Lie algebra and $h$ a reductive subalgebra of $g$, $n$ a positive integer. Consider the diagonal actions $G:g^n, N_G(h):h^n$. We study a relation between the algebra $C[h^n]^{N_G(h)}$ and its subalgebra consisting of restrictions to $h^n$ of elements of $C[g^n]^G$.
We give a systematic treatment of the stability theory for action of a real reductive Lie group G on a topological space. More precisely, we introduce an abstract setting for actions of non-compact real reductive Lie groups on topological spaces that admit functions similar to the Kempf-Ness function. The point of this construction is that one can characterize stability, semi-stability and polystability of a point by numerical criteria, that is in terms of a function called maximal weight. We apply this setting to the actions of a real non-compact reductive Lie group G on a real compact subman…
The aim of this paper is to give a proof of the restriction theorems for principal bundles with a reductive algebraic group as structure group in arbitrary characteristic. Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over any field $k=\bar{k}$, let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over $k$, let $H$ be a very ample line bundle on $X$ and let $E$ be a semistable (resp. stable) principal $G$-bundle on $X$ w.r.t. $H$. The main result of this paper is that the restriction of $E$ to a general smooth curve which is a complete intersection of ample hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degree's is again semi…
We generalize results of P. Schneider and U. Stuhler for GL_l+1 to a reductive algebraic group G defined and split over a non-archimedean local field K. Following their lines, we prove that the generalized Steinberg representations of G with coefficients in any abelian group are cyclic. When G is semi-simple of adjoint type, we give an expression of these representations, whenever it is possible and in particular for those that are of maximal degree, in terms of the parahoric subgroups of G.
We consider the conjugation-action of an arbitrary upper-block parabolic subgroup of ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbf{C})$, especially of the Borel subgroup $B$ and of the standard unipotent subgroup $U$ of the latter on the nilpotent cone of complex nilpotent matrices. We obtain generic normal forms of the orbits and describe generating (semi-) invariants for the Borel semi-invariant ring as well as for the $U$-invariant ring. The latter is described in more detail in terms of algebraic quotients by a special toric variety closely related. The study of a GIT-quotient for the Borel-action is initiated.
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study certain irreducible perverse l-adic sheaves on a reductive group G over a finite field (we call them gamma-sheaves). One can construct such a sheaf starting with (almost) every finite-dimensional representation of the Langlands dual group. We present conjecture connecting the above sheaves with generalized gamma-functions introduced in our previous paper. We also conjecture that the convolution functor with the above sheaves enjoys certain nice properties (in particular, we compute the convolution of a gamma-sheaf with a character sheaf). We …
A proof of Grothendieck--Serre conjecture on principal bundles over a semi-local regular ring containing an infinite field is given in [FP] recently. That proof is based significantly on Theorem 1.0.1 stated below in the Introduction and proven in the present preprint. Theorem 1.0.1 itself is a consequence of two purity theorems (Theorems A and 10.0.30) proven below in the present preprint. The geometric part of a new preprint [PSV] and the main result of an article [C-T-S] are used significantly in proofs of those two purity theorems. One of that purity result looks as follows. Let O be a sem…
We study the Newton stratification of the adjoint quotient of a connected split reductive group G with simply connected derived group over the field F of formal Laurent series in one variable over the field of complex numbers. Our main result describes the centralizer of a regular semisimple element in G(F) whose image in the adjoint quotient lies in a certain generic subset of a given Newton stratum. Other noteworthy results include analogues of some results of Springer on regular elements of finite reflection groups, as well as a geometric construction of a well known homomorphism from the f…
Let $U$ be a regular connected affine semi-local scheme over a field $k$. Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme over $U$. Assuming that $G$ has an appropriate parabolic subgroup scheme, we prove the following statement. Given an affine $k$-scheme $W$, a principal $G$-bundle over $W\times_kU$ is trivial if it is trivial over the generic fiber of the projection $W\times_kU\to U$. We also simplify the proof of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture: let $U$ be a regular connected affine semi-local scheme over a field $k$. Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme over $U$. A principal $G$-bundle over $U$ is t…
We study the semi-decomposable invariants of a split semisimple group and their extension to a split reductive group by using the torsion in the codimension $2$ Chow groups of a product of Severi-Brauer varieties. In particular, for any $n\geq 2$ we completely determine the degree $3$ invariants of a split semisimple group, the quotient of $(\operatorname{\mathbf{SL}}_{2})^{n}$ by its maximal central subgroup, as well as of the corresponding split reductive group. We also provide an example illustrating that a modification of our method can be applied to find the semi-decomposable invariants o…
By a quasi-connected reductive group (a term of Labesse) over an arbitrary field we mean an almost direct product of a connected semisimple group and a quasi-torus (a smooth group of multiplicative type). We show that a linear algebraic group is quasi-connected reductive if and only if it is isomorphic to a smooth normal subgroup of a connected reductive group. We compute the first Galois cohomology set H^1(R,G) of a quasi-connected reductive group G over the field R of real numbers in terms of a certain action of a subgroup of the Weyl group on the Galois cohomology of a fundamental quasi-tor…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$, and let $Γ$ be a cocompact lattice in $G$. We prove that any invariant bundle on $G/Γ$ is semistable.
We carry an intrinsic approach to the study of the connectedness of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_G$ of $G$-Higgs bundles, over a compact Riemann surface, when $G$ is a complex reductive (not necessarily connected) Lie group. We prove that the number of connected components of $\mathcal{M}_G$ is indexed by the corresponding topological invariants. In particular, this gives an alternative proof of the counting by J. Li of the number of connected components of the moduli space of flat $G$-connections in the case in which $G$ is connected and semisimple.
Let R be a semi-local Dedekind domain and let K be the field of fractions of R. Let G be a reductive semisimple simply connected R-group scheme such that every semisimple normal R-subgroup scheme of G contains a split R-torus G_m. We prove that the kernel of the map H^1_et(R,G)-> H^1_et(K,G) induced by the inclusion of R into K, is trivial. This result partially extends a theorem of Nisnevich.
Let G be a connected reductive group. The late Ramanathan gave a notion of (semi)stable principal G-bundle on a complex projective curve and constructed a projective moduli space of such objects. We generalize Ramanathan's notion and construction to the case of higher dimension, allowing also objects which we call semistable principal G-sheaves.
When the action of a reductive group on a projective variety has a suitable linearisation, Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT) can be used to construct and study an associated quotient variety. In this article we describe how Mumford's GIT can be extended effectively to suitable actions of linear algebraic groups which are not necessarily reductive, with the extra data of a graded linearisation for the action. Any linearisation in the traditional sense for a reductive group action induces a graded linearisation in a natural way. The classical examples of moduli spaces which can be const…
We show that the moduli space of semistable G-bundles on an elliptic curve for a reductive group G is isomorphic to a power of the elliptic curve modulo a certain Weyl group which depend on the topological type of the bundle. This generalises a result of Laszlo to arbitrary connected components and recovers the global description of the moduli space due to Friedman--Morgan--Witten and Schweigert. The proof is entirely in the realm of algebraic geometry and works in arbitrary characteristic.
Let G be a semisimple complex algebraic group, and H a wonderful subgroup of G. We prove several results relating the subgroup H to the properties of a combinatorial invariant S of G/H, called its spherical system. It is also possible to consider a spherical system S as a datum defined by purely combinatorial axioms, and under certain circumstances our results prove the existence of a wonderful subgroup H associated to S. As a byproduct, we reduce for any group G the proof of the classification of wonderful G-varieties, known as the Luna conjecture, to its verification on a small family of cas…
We survey recent work, published since 2015, on equivariant Oka theory. The main results described in the survey are as follows. Homotopy principles for equivariant isomorphisms of Stein manifolds on which a reductive complex Lie group $G$ acts. Applications to the linearisation problem. A parametric Oka principle for sections of a bundle $E$ of homogeneous spaces for a group bundle $\mathscr G$, all over a reduced Stein space $X$ with compatible actions of a reductive complex group on $E$, $\mathscr G$, and $X$. Application to the classification of generalised principal bundles with a group a…
Let G be a split reductive group. We introduce the moduli problem of "bundle chains" parametrizing framed principal G-bundles on chains of lines. Any fan supported in a Weyl chamber determines a stability condition on bundle chains. Its moduli stack provides an equivariant toroidal compactification of G. All toric orbifolds may be thus obtained. Moreover, we get a canonical compactification of any semisimple G, which agrees with the wonderful compactification in the adjoint case, but which in other cases is an orbifold. Finally, we describe the connections with Losev-Manin's spaces of weighted…
