Highly coherent optical sources are a key element in several fields of physics, in particular in time frequency metrology. Over the past decennia, there has been particular efforts in developing such sources to the expense of sophisticated laser systems and relatively smart electronics. We propose here a new general principle of a self-adaptive oscillator where the intricate operation of a 100-m-long active optical resonator and a standard semiconductor laser offers a very high spectral purity and can be tailored to any wavelength. Single frequency operation of this self-adaptive photonic oscillator is achieved without any servo locking or stabilization electronics. Free running operation leads to a Lorentzian linewidth of 40 mHz. The long-term drift of the optical frequency in the free running regime is within 10 MHz over hours. This principle applies to any wavelength attainable by laser diodes which opens tremendous opportunities in particular in applications where atomic or molecular transitions require precise wavelengths.
High Q optical resonators are a key component for ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, frequency stabilization, precision spectroscopy and quantum applications. Integration of these resonators in a photonic waveguide wafer-scale platform is key to reducing their cost, size and power as well as sensitivity to environmental disturbances. However, to date, the intrinsic Q of integrated all-waveguide resonators has been relegated to below 150 Million. Here, we report an all-waveguide Si3N4 resonator with an intrinsic Q of 422 Million and a 3.4 Billion absorption loss limited Q. The resonator has a 453 k…
We present the first demonstration of a narrow linewidth, waveguide-based Brillouin laser which is enabled by large Brillouin gain of a chalcogenide chip. The waveguides are equipped with vertical tapers for low loss coupling. Due to optical feedback for the Stokes wave, the lasing threshold is reduced to 360 mW, which is 5 times lower than the calculated single-pass Brillouin threshold for the same waveguide. The slope efficiency of the laser is found to be 30% and the linewidth of 100 kHz is measured using a self-heterodyne method.
Recent advances in the processing of thin-film LNOI have enabled low-loss photonic integrated circuits, modulators with improved half-wave voltage, electro-optic frequency combs and novel on-chip electro-optic devices, with applications ranging from 5G telecommunication and microwave photonics to microwave-to-optical quantum interfaces. Lithium niobate integrated photonic circuits could equally be the basis of integrated narrow-linewidth frequency-agile lasers. Pioneering work on polished lithium niobate crystal resonators has led to the development of electrically tunable narrow-linewidth las…

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) lasers, through their unique linewidth narrowing properties, are an ideal candidate to create highly-coherent waveguide integrated sources. In particular, cascaded-order Brillouin lasers show promise for multi-line emission, low-noise microwave generation and other optical comb applications. Photonic integration of these lasers can dramatically improve their stability to environme…

Already, meticulous design and construction of bench Fabry-Perot cavities has made possible dramatic achievements in active laser-linewidth reduction, predominantly for optical-atomic clocks. Yet there is increasing demand for miniaturized laser systems operating with high performance in ambient environments. Here, we report a compact and robust photonic-atomic laser comprising a 2.5 cm long, 20,000…
Silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides with ultra-low optical loss enable integrated photonic applications including low noise, narrow linewidth lasers, chip-scale nonlinear photonics, and microwave photonics. Lasers are key components to SiN photonic integrated circuits (PICs), but are difficult to fully integrate with low-index SiN waveguides due to their large mismatch with the high-index III-V gain materials. The recent demonstration of multilayer heterogeneous integration provides a practical solution and enabled the first-generation of lasers fully integrated with SiN waveguides. However a las…
We built a 1-watt cw singly resonant optical parametric oscillator operating at an idler wavelength of 1.65~$μ$m for application to quantum interfaces. The non resonant idler is frequency stabilized by side-fringe locking on a relatively high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity, and the influence of intensity noise is carefully analyzed. A relative linewidth down to the sub-kHz level (about 30 Hz over 2 s) is achieved. A very good long term stability is obtained for both frequency and intensity.
Silicon nitride (Si3N4), as a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) material, finds wide use in modern integrated circuit (IC) technology. The past decade has witnessed tremendous development of Si3N4 in photonic areas, with innovations in nonlinear photonics, optical sensing, etc. However, the lack of an integrated laser with high performance prohibits the large-scale integration of Si3N4 waveguides into complex photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here, we demonstrate a novel III-V/Si/Si3N4 structure to enable efficient electrically pumped lasing in a Si3N4 based laser external cavi…
We report an on-chip single mode microlaser with low-threshold fabricated on Erbium doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). The single mode laser emission at 1550.5 nm wavelength is generated in a coupled photonic molecule, which is facilitated by Vernier effect when pumping the photonic molecule at 970 nm. A threshold pump power as low as 200 uW is demonstrated thanks to the high quality factor above 10^6. Moreover, the linewidth of the microlaser reaches 4 kHz, which is the best result in LNOI microlasers. Such single mode micro-laser lithographically fabricated on chip is highly in deman…
Rare-earth ions are promising solid state systems to build light-matter interfaces at the quantum level. This relies on their potential to show narrow optical homogeneous linewidths or, equivalently, long-lived optical quantum states. In this letter, we report on europium molecular crystals that exhibit linewidths in the 10s of kHz range, orders of magnitude narrower than other molecular centers. We harness this property to demonstrate efficient optical spin initialization, coherent storage of light using an atomic frequency comb, and optical control of ion-ion interactions towards implementat…
Planar nanophotonic structures enable broadband, near-unity coupling of emission from quantum dots embedded within, thereby realizing ideal singe-photon sources. The efficiency and coherence of the single-photon source is limited by charge noise, which results in the broadening of the emission spectrum. We report suppression of the noise by fabricating photonic crystal waveguides in a gallium arsenide membrane containing quantum dots embedded in a $p$-$i$-$n$ diode. Local electrical contacts in the vicinity of the waveguides minimize the leakage current and allow fast electrical control ($\appr…
Laser stabilization sits at the heart of many precision scientific experiments and applications, including quantum information science, metrology and atomic timekeeping. These systems narrow the laser linewidth and stabilize the carrier by use of Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking to a table-scale, ultra-high quality factor (Q), vacuum spaced Fabry-Perot reference cavity. Integrating these cavities, to bring characteristics of PDH stabilization to the chip-scale, is critical to reduce their size, cost, and weight, and enable a wide range of portable and system-on-chip applications. We report a si…

We demonstrate a hybrid integrated and widely tunable diode laser with an intrinsic linewidth as narrow as 40 Hz, achieved with a single roundtrip through a low-loss feedback circuit that extends the cavity length to 0.5 meter on a chip. Employing solely dielectrics for single-roundtrip, single-mode resolved feedback filtering enables linewidth narrowing with increasing laser power, without limitations through nonlinear loss. We achieve single-frequency oscillation with up to 23 mW fiber coupled output power, 70-nm wide spectral coverage in the 1.55 $μ$m wavelength range with 3 mW output, and …
Near transform-limited single photon sources are required for perfect photon indistinguishability in quantum networks. Having such sources in nanodiamonds is particularly important since it can enable engineering hybrid quantum photonic systems. In this letter, we report the generation of optically stable, nearly transform-limited single silicon vacancy emitters in nanodiamonds. Lines as narrow as 325 MHz are reported, which is comparable to the lifetime limited linewidth. Moreover, the emitters exhibit minimal spectrum diffusion and absolute photostability, even if pumped well above saturatio…
Semiconductor mode-locked lasers can be used in a variety of applications ranging from multi-carrier sources for WDM communication systems to time base references for metrology. Their packaging in compact chip- or module-level systems remains however burdened by their strong sensitivity to back-reflections, quickly destroying the coherence of the mode-locking. Here, we investigate the stabilization of mode-locked lasers directly edge coupled to a silicon photonic integrated circuit, with the objective of moving isolators downstream to the output of the photonic circuit. A 2.77 kHz 3 dB RF line…
We stabilize the idler frequency of a singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator directly to the resonance of a mid-infrared Fabry-Pérot reference cavity. This is accomplished by the Pound-Drever-Hall locking scheme, controlling either the pump laser or the resonant signal frequency. A residual relative frequency noise power spectral density below 10$^3$ Hz$^2$/Hz is reached, with a Gaussian linewidth of 920 Hz over 100 ms, which demonstrates the potential for reaching spectral purity down to the Hz level by locking the optical parametric oscillator against a mid-infrared cavity with state-…
A photonic realization of the Dirac oscillator (DO), i.e. of the relativistic extension of the quantum harmonic oscillator, is proposed for light propagation in fiber Bragg gratings. Transmission spectra clearly show the existence of electron and positron bound states of the DO, corresponding to resonance modes above and below the Bragg frequency, as well as the asymmetry of the energy spectrum for electron and positron branches.
Integrating solid-state quantum emitters with photonic circuits is essential for realizing large-scale quantum photonic processors. Negatively charged tin-vacancy (SnV$^-$) centers in diamond have emerged as promising candidates for quantum emitters because of their excellent optical and spin properties including narrow-linewidth emission and long spin coherence times. SnV$^-$ centers need to be incorporated in optical waveguides for efficient on-chip routing of the photons they generate. However, such integration has yet to be realized. In this Letter, we demonstrate the coupling of SnV$^-$ c…
Low-noise lasers are of central importance in a wide variety of applications, including high spectral-efficiency coherent communication protocols, distributed fibre sensing, and long distance coherent LiDAR. In addition to low phase noise, frequency agility, that is, the ability to achieve high-bandwidth actuation of the laser frequency, is imperative for triangular chirping in frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) based ranging or any optical phase locking as routinely used in metrology. While integrated silicon-based lasers have experienced major advances and are now employed on a comme…
The interaction of optical and acoustic waves via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has recently reached on-chip platforms, which has opened new fields of applications ranging from integrated microwave photonics and on-chip narrow-linewidth lasers, to phonon-based optical delay and signal processing schemes. Since SBS is an effect that scales exponentially with interaction length, on-chip implementation on a short length scale is challenging, requiring carefully designed waveguides with optimized opto-acoustic overlap. In this work, we use the principle of Brillouin optical correlation dom…
We observe the weak coupling of lead sulphide nanocrystals to localized defect modes of 2-dimensional silicon nanocavities. Cavity resonances characterized with ensemble nanocrystals are verified with cold-cavity measurements using integrated waveguides. Polarization dependence of the cavity field modes is observed. The linewidths measured in coupling experiments are broadened in comparison to the cold-cavity characterization, partly due to large homogeneous linewidths of the nanocrystals. The calculated Purcell factor for a single exciton is 75, showing promise toward applications in single p…
Single defect centers in layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are promising candidates as single photon sources for quantum optics and nanophotonics applications. However, until today spectral instability hinders many applications. Here, we perform resonant excitation measurements and observe Fourier-Transform limited (FL) linewidths down to $\approx 50$ MHz. We investigate optical properties of more than 600 quantum emitters (QE) in hBN. The QEs exhibit narrow zero-phonon lines (ZPL) distributed over a spectral range from 580 nm to 800 nm and with dipole-like emission with high polarization …
We demonstrate fast (up to 20 GHz), low power (5 $μW$) modulation of photonic crystal (PC) cavities in GaAs containing InAs quantum dots. Rapid modulation through blue-shifting of the cavity resonance is achieved via free carrier injection by an above-band picosecond laser pulse. Slow tuning by several linewidths due to laser-induced heating is also demonstrated.

Combining optical gain in direct-bandgap III-V materials with tunable optical feedback offered by advanced photonic integrated circuits is key to chip-scale external-cavity lasers (ECL), offering wideband tunability along with low optical linewidths. External feedback circuits can be efficiently implemented using low-loss silicon nitride (Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$) waveguides, which do not suffer from two-photon absorption and can thus handle much higher power levels than conventional silicon photonics. However, co-integrating III-V-based gain elements with tunable external feedback circuits in chip-sca…
We investigate optical parametric oscillations through four-wave mixing in resonant cavities and photonic crystals. The theoretical analysis underlines the relevant features of the phenomenon and the role of the density of states. Using fully vectorial 3D time-domain simulations, including both dispersion and nonlinear polarization, for the first time we address this process in a face centered cubic lattice and in a photonic crystal slab. The results lead the way to the development of novel parametric sources in isotropic media.
We demonstrate a free running 10GHz microresonator-based RF photonic hyper-parametric oscillator characterized with phase noise better than -60dBc/Hz at 10Hz, -90dBc/Hz at 100Hz, and -150dBc/Hz at 10MHz. The device consumes less than 25mW of optical power. A correlation between the frequency of the continuous wave laser pumping the nonlinear resonator and the generated RF frequency is confirmed. The performance of the device is compared with the performance of a standard optical fiber based coupled opto-electronic oscillator of OEwaves.
We present the controllability capabilities for the limit cycles of an extremely tunable photonic oscillator, consisting of two coupled semiconductor lasers. We show that this system supports stable limit cycles with frequencies ranging from a few to more than a hundred GHz that are characterized by a widely varying degree of asymmetry between the oscillations of the two lasers. These dynamical features are directly controllable via differential pumping as well as optical frequency detuning of the two lasers, suggesting a multi-functional oscillator for chip-scale radio-frequency photonics app…
The synthesis of ultralow-noise microwaves is of both scientific and technological relevance for timing, metrology, communications and radio-astronomy. Here, a soliton microcomb with a 14 GHz repetition rate is generated with an ultra-stable pump laser and used to derive an ultralow-noise microwave reference signal, with an absolute phase noise level below -60 dBc/Hz a…

Narrow linewidth lasers and optical frequency combs generated with mode-locked lasers revolutionized optical frequency metrology. The advent of soliton Kerr frequency combs in compact crystalline or integrated ring optical microresonators opens new horizons for applications. These combs, as was naturally assumed, however, require narrow-linewidth single-frequency pump lasers. We demonstrate that a regular multi-frequency Fabry-Perot laser diode self-injection locked to an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator can be first efficiently transformed to a single-frequency ultra-narro…
We consider the properties of the small-signal modulation response of symmetry-breaking phase-locked states of twin coupled semiconductor lasers. The extended stability and the varying asymmetry of these modes allows for the introduction of a rich set of interesting modulation response features, such as sharp resonances and anti-resonance as well as efficient modulation at very high frequencies exceeding the free running relaxation frequencies by orders of magnitude.
The global structure of the Isochrons and the corresponding Phase Response Curves are, for the first time, investigated and numerically computed for the fundamental photonic oscillator consisted of an Optically Injected Laser. Their crucial role in the synchronization dynamics under a periodic modulation of the injection beam is shown, along with their capability for providing conditions for stable phase-locking and periodic outputs with discrete equidistant spectra in the form of frequency combs.
Synchronization in oscillatory systems is a frequent natural phenomenon and is becoming an important concept in modern physics. Nanomechanical resonators are ideal systems for studying synchronization due to their controllable oscillation properties and engineerable nonlinearities. Here we demonstrate synchronization of two nanomechanical oscillators via a photonic resonator, enabling optomechanical synchronization between mechanically isolated nanomechanical resonators. Optical backaction gives rise to both reactive and dissipative coupling of the mechanical resonators, leading to coherent os…
Modulated optical cavities have been proposed and demonstrated for applications in communications, laser frequency stabilization, microwave-to-optical conversion and frequency comb generation. However, most studies are restricted to the adiabatic regime, where either the maximum excursion of the modulation or the modulation frequency itself is below the linewidth of the cavity. Here, using a fiber ring resonator with an embedded electro-optic phase modulator, we investigate the nonadiabatic regime. By strongly driving the modulator at frequencies that are significantly smaller than the free-sp…
Transfer of amplitude and phase noise from a continuous wave optical pump to the repetition rate of a Kerr frequency comb is studied theoretically, with focus on generation of spectrally pure radio frequency (RF) signals via demodulation of the frequency comb on a fast photodiode. It is shown that both the high order chromatic dispersion of the resonator spectrum and frequency-dependent quality factor of the resonator modes facilitate the optical-to-RF noise conversion that limits spectral purity of the RF signal.
This paper describes the development of a photonic local oscillator (LO) source based on a 3-stage Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) device. The MZM laser synthesizer demonstrates the feasibility of providing the photonic reference LO for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array telescope located in Chile. This MZM approach to generating an LO by radio RF modulation of a monochromatic optical source provides the merits of wide frequency coverage of 4-130 GHz, tuning speed of about 0.2 seconds, and residual integrated phase noise performance of 0.3 degrees RMS at 100 GHz.
Microring optical modulators are being explored extensively for energy-efficient photonic communication networks in future high-performance computing systems and microprocessors, because they can significantly reduce the power consumption of optical transmitters via the resonant circulation of light. However, resonant modulators have traditionally suffered from a trade-off between their power consumption and maximum operation bit rate, which were thought to depend oppositely upon the cavity linewidth. Here, we break this linewidth limitation using a silicon microring. By controlling the rate a…

An optical technique based on stability transfer among modes of a monolithic optical microresonator is proposed for long therm frequency stabilization of a radiofrequency (RF) oscillator. We show that locking two resonator modes, characterized with dissimilar sensitivity in responding to an applied forcing function, to a master RF oscillator allows enhancing the long term stability of a slave RF oscillator locked to two resonator modes having nearly identical sensitivity. For instance, the stability of a 10 MHz master oscillator characterized with Allan deviation of 10^-7 at 10^4s can be incre…
