Narrow-linewidth light sources are essential for both fundamental research and various technological applications, yet they are challenging to generate directly due to instabilities in active laser cavities and the misalignment between closely spaced resonator modes and broad gain bandwidth. In this study, we demonstrate the direct generation of low-noise light from an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). By minimizing the delay in the optoelectronic link and employing a high-quality optical resonator, an OEO can simultaneously generate both a low-phase-noise optical oscillation that is resilient to phase fluctuations of its pump laser, and a radio frequency (RF) oscillation that captures these fluctuations. We leverage these RF-domain fluctuations to implement a high-performance feedback loop, which stabilizes the pump laser and significantly enhances the performance of optical oscillation. This approach achieves an outstanding phase noise level of -100 dBc/Hz at a 1 kHz offset and an integrated linewidth as narrow as 0.23 Hz. The integration of optoelectronic oscillation and feedback loop provides significant broadband noise suppression compared to conventional schemes for generating narrow-linewidth light, paving the way for developments in fields such as coherent optical communications, atomic spectroscopy, metrology, and quantum optics.
We demonstrate a combination of optical and electronic feedback that significantly narrows the linewidth of distributed Bragg reflector lasers (DBRs). We use optical feedback from a long external fiber path to reduce the high-frequency noise of the laser. An electro-optic modulator placed inside the optical feedback path allows us to apply electronic feedback to the laser frequency with very large bandwidth, enabling robust and stable locking to a reference cavity that suppresses low-frequency components of laser noise. The combination of optical and electronic feedback allows us to significan…
We demonstrate that the implementation of phase-locked loop forbidding multimode operation of a long Brillouin resonator also leads to a dramatic reduction of the optical phase noise of the pump itself. In the case of a continuous Er,Yb:glass laser, a reduction by more than 90 dB at 100 Hz of the carrier is observed. This yields an optical linewidth estimated narrower than 2 Hz for the pump laser. The method being independent of the laser wavelength, it can be applied to almost any laser.
The optoelectronic oscillator is a delay line oscillator that leverages optical fiber technology to realize the large delay required for low phase noise systems. Spurious sidemodes are an artifact of the delay line oscillator, yet treatments of injection locking of optoelectronic oscillators have relied on the application of classical injection locking theory valid only for single mode oscillators. The large delay contributed by the optical fiber delay line is accounted for by classical theory only in part through the quality factor Q that captures the round-trip group delay in a neighborhood …
We built a 1-watt cw singly resonant optical parametric oscillator operating at an idler wavelength of 1.65~$μ$m for application to quantum interfaces. The non resonant idler is frequency stabilized by side-fringe locking on a relatively high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity, and the influence of intensity noise is carefully analyzed. A relative linewidth down to the sub-kHz level (about 30 Hz over 2 s) is achieved. A very good long term stability is obtained for both frequency and intensity.
An optoelectronic oscillator exhibiting a large delay in its feedback loop is studied both experimentally and theoretically. We show that multiple square-wave oscillations may coexist for the same values of the parameters (multirhythmicity). Depending on the sign of the phase shift, these regimes admit either periods close to an integer fraction of the delay or periods close to an odd integer fraction of twice the delay. These periodic solutions emerge from successive Hopf bifurcation points and stabilize at a finite amplitude following a scenario similar to Eckhaus instability in spatially ex…
We introduce a stochastic model for the determination of phase noise in optoelectronic oscillators. After a short overview of the main results for the phase diffusion approach in autonomous oscillators, an extension is proposed for the case of optoelectronic oscillators where the microwave is a limit-cycle originated from a bifurcation induced by nonlinearity and time-delay. This Langevin approach based on stochastic calculus is also successfully confronted with experimental measurements.
The optoelectronic fiber delay line microwave oscillator offers attractive and large potential for numerous applications in high speed fiber optics communication, space, and radar systems. Its relevant features are very low phase noise and wide-range tunability, while operating at frequencies of tens of GHz. We consider the contribution of the DFB laser to the oscillator phase noise. Low frequency spectra of wavelength fluctuation and RIN are measured and analyzed. As a conclusion, the oscillator phase noise can be improved by proper choice of optic and optoelectronic components.

Controlled transitions between a hierarchy of n-scroll attractors are investigated in a nonlinear optoelectronic oscillator. Using the system's feedback strength as a control parameter, it is shown experimentally the transition from Van der Pol-like attractors to 6-scroll, but in general, this scheme can produce an arbitrary number of scrolls. The complexity of every state is characterized by Lyapunov exponents and autocorrelation coefficients.
We stabilize the idler frequency of a singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator directly to the resonance of a mid-infrared Fabry-Pérot reference cavity. This is accomplished by the Pound-Drever-Hall locking scheme, controlling either the pump laser or the resonant signal frequency. A residual relative frequency noise power spectral density below 10$^3$ Hz$^2$/Hz is reached, with a Gaussian linewidth of 920 Hz over 100 ms, which demonstrates the potential for reaching spectral purity down to the Hz level by locking the optical parametric oscillator against a mid-infrared cavity with state-…
We report the first experimental demonstration of multi-cavity optoelectronic oscillators where the different cavities are hosted in a single multicore fiber. Different configurations are implemented on the same 20-m 7-core fiber link, exploiting both unbalanced dual-cavity operation (loop lengths are a multiple of a reference value) and multi-cavity Vernier operation (loop lengths are slightly different).
Highly coherent optical sources are a key element in several fields of physics, in particular in time frequency metrology. Over the past decennia, there has been particular efforts in developing such sources to the expense of sophisticated laser systems and relatively smart electronics. We propose here a new general principle of a self-adaptive oscillator where the intricate operation of a 100-m-long active optical resonator and a standard semiconductor laser offers a very high spectral purity and can be tailored to any wavelength. Single frequency operation of this self-adaptive photonic osci…
Narrow linewidth lasers and optical frequency combs generated with mode-locked lasers revolutionized optical frequency metrology. The advent of soliton Kerr frequency combs in compact crystalline or integrated ring optical microresonators opens new horizons for applications. These combs, as was naturally assumed, however, require narrow-linewidth single-frequency pump lasers. We demonstrate that a regular multi-frequency Fabry-Perot laser diode self-injection locked to an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator can be first efficiently transformed to a single-frequency ultra-narro…
Delay line oscillators based on photonic components, such as the optoelectronic oscillator (OEO), offer the potential for realization of phase noise levels orders of magnitude lower than achievable by conventional microwave sources. Fibre optic-based delay lines can realize the large delay required for low phase noise systems whilst simultaneously achieving insertion loss levels that can be compensated by available microwave and photonic amplification technologies. However, the long fibre is vulnerable to environmental perturbations such as mechanical vibrations and variations in ambient tempe…
Optoelectronic down-conversion of a THz optical beatnote to a RF intermediate frequency is performed with a standard Mach-Zehnder modulator followed by a zero dispersion-slope fiber. The two interleaved optical spectra obtained by four-wave mixing are shown to contain more than 75 harmonics enabling to conveniently recover the phase noise of a beatnote at 770 GHz at around 500 MHz. This four-wave mixing down-conversion technique is implemented in a two-frequency solid-state laser in order to directly phase-lock its 168 GHz beatnote to a 10 MHz local oscillator.
Absolute distance measurement (ADM) over a long range has been studied intensely over the last several decades, due to its important applications in large-scale manufacturing and outer space explorations [1-5]. Traditional absolute distance measurements utilize detection of time-of-flight information, detection of phase shift, or a combination of the two [6-17]. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for high-precision ADM over a long range based on frequency detection by using two optoelectronic oscillators (OEO) to convert distance information to frequency information. By taking advantage …
A continuously tunable titanium:sapphire (Ti:Sa) laser self-seeded by an extended grating cavity was demonstrated and characterized. By inserting a partially reflecting mirror inside the cavity of a classic single-cavity grating laser, two oscillators are created: a broadband power oscillator, and a narrowband oscillator with a prism beam expander and a diffraction grating in Littrow configuration. By coupling the grating cavity oscillation into the power oscillator, a power-enhanced narrow-linewidth laser oscillation is achieved. Compared to the classic grating laser, this simple modification…
We present the setup and test of a transportable clock laser at 698 nm for a strontium lattice clock. A master-slave diode laser system is stabilized to a rigidly mounted optical reference cavity. The setup was transported by truck over 400 km from Braunschweig to Düsseldorf, where the cavity-stabilized laser was compared to a stationary clock laser for the interrogation of ytterbium (578 nm). Only minor realignments were necessary after the transport. The lasers were compared by a Ti:Sapphire frequency comb used as a transfer oscillator. The thus generated virtual beat showed a combined linew…

The OPO is based on a periodically-poled lithium-niobate crystal and features a specially designed intracavity etalon which permits its continuous tuning and stable operation at any desired wavelength in a wide operation range. We demonstrate Doppler-free spectroscopy on a rovibrational transition of methane at 3.39 um.
Si photonics has an immense potential for the development of compact and low-loss opto-electronic oscillators (OEO), with applications in radar and wireless communications. However, current Si OEO have shown a limited performance. Si OEO relying on direct conversion of intensity modulated signals into the microwave domain yield a limited tunability. Wider tunability has been shown by indirect phase-modulation to intensity-modulation conversion, requiring precise control of the phase-modulation. Here, we propose a new approach enabling Si OEOs with wide tunability and direct intensity-modulatio…
We present an experimental study of optical frequency comb generation based on cascaded quadratic nonlinearities inside a continuous-wave-pumped optical parametric oscillator. We demonstrate comb states which produce narrow-linewidth intermode beat note signals, and we verify the mode spacing uniformity of the comb at the Hz level. We also show that spectral quality of the comb can be improved by modulating the parametric gain at a frequency that corresponds to the comb mode spacing. We have reached a high average output power of over 4 W in the near-infrared region, at ~2 μm.
We report on the setup and characterization of a 698 nm master-slave diode laser system to probe the 1S0-3P0 clock transition of strontium atoms confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice. A linewidth in the order of around 100 Hz of the laser system has been measured with respect to an ultrastable 657 nm diode laser with 1 Hz linewidth using a femtosecond fiber comb as transfer oscillator. The laser has been used to measure the magnetically induced 1S0-3P0 clock transition in 88Sr where a linewidth of 165 Hz has been observed. The transfer oscillator method provides a virtual beat signal b…
We report a multi-channel optical frequency synthesizer developed to generate extremely stable continuous wave lasers directly out of the optical comb of an Er-doped fiber oscillator. Being stabilized to a high-finesse cavity with a fractional frequency stability of $3.8\times10^{-15}$ at 0.1 s, the comb-rooted synthesizer produces multiple optical frequencies of ultra-narrow linewidth of 1.0 Hz at 1 s concurrently with an output power of tens of mW per each channel. Diode-based stimulated emission by injection locking is a key mechanism that allows comb frequency modes to sprout up with suffi…
The plane-wave dynamics of 3*omega => (2*omega, omega) subharmonic optical parametric oscillators containing a second harmonic generator of the idler wave omega is analyzed analytically by using the meanfield approximation and numerically by taking into account the field propagation inside the media. The resonant Chi(2):Chi(2) cascaded second-order nonlinearities induce a mutual injection-locking of the signal and idler waves that leads to coherent self phase-locking of the pump and subharmonic waves, freezing the phase diffusion noise. In case of signal-and-idler resonant devices, largely det…
State-of-the-art optical oscillators based on lasers frequency stabilized to high finesse optical cavities are limited by thermal noise that causes fluctuations of the cavity length. Thermal noise represents a fundamental limit to the stability of an optical interferometer and plays a key role in modern optical metrology. We demonstrate a novel design to reduce the thermal noise limit for optical cavities by an order of magnitude and present an experimental realization of this new cavity system, demonstrating the most stable oscillator of any kind to date. The cavity spacer and the mirror subs…
We experimentally investigate the RF linewidth and timing jitter over a wide range of delay tuning in a self-mode-locked two-section quantum dash lasers emitting at ~ 1.55 micron and operating at ~ 21 GHz repetition rate subject to single and dual optical feedback into gain section. Various feedback conditions are investigated and optimum levels determined for narrowest linewidth and reduced timing jitter for both single and dual loop configurations. We demonstrate that dual loop feedback, with the shorter feedback cavity tuned to be fully resonant, followed by fine tuning of the phase of the …
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic inorganic perovskite (HOIP) semiconductors have attracted widespread attention as a platform of next generation optoelectronic devices benefiting from their naturally occurring and tunable multiple quantum-well like (QW) structures, which enable a wide range of physical properties. Determining the intrinsic optical/electronic properties of 2D HOIPs is extremely important for further utility in photonic and optoelectronics devices. Here, we obtain the optical dielectric functions, complex refractive indices, and complex optical conductivities of both Ruddlesd…
Self-injection locking is a dynamic phenomenon representing stabilization of the emission frequency of an oscillator with a passive cavity enabling frequency filtered coherent feedback to the oscillator cavity. For instance, self-injection locking of a semiconductor laser to a high-quality-factor (high-Q) whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator can result in multiple orders of magnitude reduction of the laser linewidth. The phenomenon was broadly studied in experiments, but its detailed theoretical model allowing improving the stabilization performance does not exist. In this paper we dev…
Lasers with hertz-level linewidths on timescales up to seconds are critical for precision metrology, timekeeping, and manipulation of quantum systems. Such frequency stability typically relies on bulk-optic lasers and reference cavities, where increased size is leveraged to improve noise performance, but with the trade-off of cost, hand assembly, and limited application environments. On the other hand, planar waveguide lasers and cavities exploit the benefits of CMOS scalability but are fundamentally limited from achieving hertz-level linewidths at longer times by stochastic noise and thermal …
Rayleigh scattering generates intensity noise close to an optical carrier that propagates in a single-mode optical fiber. This noise degrades the performance of optoelectronic oscillators and RF-photonic links. When using a broad linewidth laser, we previously found that the intensity noise power scales linearly with optical power and fiber length, which is consistent with guided entropy mode Rayleigh scattering (GEMRS), a third order nonlinear scattering process, in the spontaneous limit. In this work, we show that this behavior changes significantly with the use of a narrow linewidth laser. …
In this letter, we derive a fully-stabilized narrow-linewidth optical frequency comb (OFC) reference to a kilometer-long fiber delay line for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The 1537-nm comb modes and 1566-nm comb modes in the OFC are phase-locked to the fiber delay line with 40-kHz locking bandwidth. From out-of-loop measurement, the 1542-nm comb mode has residual phase noise of 925 mrad (integrated from 10 MHz to 1 kHz), fractional frequency stability of 9.13*10(-13) at 12.8 ms average time and 580 Hz linewidth. The linewidth has been compressed by a factor of ~ 170 compared to…
In this work we show a strategy for synchronization of three optoelectronic oscillators (OEO) operating in chaotic regime. Two applications of synchronized OEOs in secure communications are considered. In the first one the OEO is used to produce a pseudo-random bit sequence. The second application is an optical setup for secure transmission of sampled analog signals. Using numerical simulations, we calculated the bit error rate taking into account parameter mismatch noise and Gaussian noise in the input optical power. The conditions for error rate of up to 15% during key generation are shown.
We investigate the prospect of achieving negative permittivity and permeability at optical frequencies in a dielectric crystal containing stoichiometric rare-earth ions. We derive the necessary transition linewidth, ion density and electric and magnetic oscillator strengths using a simplified model of non-interacting dipoles. We identify Erbium crystals in a magnetically ordered phase as the most promising material to meet these conditions, and describe initial optical measurements of two potential candidates, \ercl{} and ${}^7$\lierf{}, which display linewidths of 3~GHz and 250~MHz, respectiv…
In this paper, we propose a scheme of active ion optical clock with detailed pumping method, lasing states, output power, linewidth and light shift. Using 171Yb+ ions in a Paul Trap we propose to utilize a Fabry-Perot resonator to realize lasing of active optical frequency standards. The quantum-limited linewidth of active 171Yb+ ion optical clock is narrower than 1 mHz. Based on the mechanism and advantages of active optical clock at ion optical clock transition frequency, this new laser light source as a stable local oscillator, will be beneficial to the single-ion optical clock, which curre…
Atmospheric turbulence generally limits free-space optical (FSO) communications, and this problem is severely exacerbated when implementing highly sensitive and spectrally efficient coherent detection. Specifically, turbulence induces power coupling from the transmitted Gaussian mode to higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes, resulting in a significant decrease of the power that mixes with a single-mode local oscillator (LO). Instead, we transmit a frequency-offset Gaussian pilot tone along with the data signal, such that both experience similar turbulence and modal power coupling. Subseque…
Angle-independent, narrowband emission is required for many optoelectronic devices, ranging from high-definition displays to sensors. However, emerging materials for electroluminescent devices, such as organics and perovskites, show spectrally broad emission due to intrinsic disorder. Coupling this emission to an optical resonance reduces the linewidth, but at the cost of inheriting the severe angular dispersion of the resonator. Strongly coupling a dispersionless exciton state to a narrowband optical microcavity could overcome this issue; however, electrically pumped emission from the resulti…
We studied the injection-locking properties of a resonant-tunneling-diode terahertz oscillator in the small-signal injection regime with a frequency-stabilized continuous THz wave. The linewidth of the emission spectrum dramatically decreased to less than 120 mHz (HWHM) from 4.4 MHz in the free running state as a result of the injection locking. We experimentally determined the amplitude of injection voltage at the antenna caused by the injected THz wave. The locking range was proportional to the injection amplitude and consistent with Adler's model. As increasing the injection amplitude, we o…
Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) have been widely used for decades as tunable, narrow linewidth, and coherent light sources for reaching long wavelengths and are attractive for applications such as quantum random number generation and Ising machines. To date, waveguide-based OPOs have suffered from relatively high thresholds on the order of hundreds of milliwatts. With the advance in integrated photonic techniques demonstrated by high-efficiency second harmonic generation in aluminum nitride (AlN) photonic microring resonators, highly compact and nanophotonic implementation of parametric …
We report on the injection locking of an optically levitated nanomechanical oscillator (a silica nanosphere) to resonant intensity modulations of an external optical signal. We explore the characteristic features of injection locking in this system, e.g. the phase pull-in effect and the injection-induced reduction of the oscillation linewidth. Our measurements are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and deepen the analogy of injection locking in levitated optomechanical systems to that in optical systems (lasers). By measuring the force noise of our feedback cooled free-running osci…
An opto-electronic radio-frequency oscillator that is based on forward scattering by the guided acoustic modes of a standard single-mode optical fiber is proposed and demonstrated. An optical pump wave is used to stimulate narrowband, resonant guided acoustic modes, which introduce phase modulation to a co-propagating optical probe wave. The phase modulation is converted to an intensity signal at the output of a Sagnac interferometer loop. The intensity waveform is detected, amplified and driven back to modulate the optical pump. Oscillations are achieved at a frequency of 319 MHz, which match…
