High Q optical resonators are a key component for ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, frequency stabilization, precision spectroscopy and quantum applications. Integration of these resonators in a photonic waveguide wafer-scale platform is key to reducing their cost, size and power as well as sensitivity to environmental disturbances. However, to date, the intrinsic Q of integrated all-waveguide resonators has been relegated to below 150 Million. Here, we report an all-waveguide Si3N4 resonator with an intrinsic Q of 422 Million and a 3.4 Billion absorption loss limited Q. The resonator has a 453 kHz intrinsic linewidth and 906 kHz loaded linewidth, with a finesse of 3005. The corresponding linear loss of 0.060 dB/m is the lowest reported to date for an all-waveguide design with deposited upper cladding oxide. These are the highest intrinsic and absorption loss limited Q factors and lowest linewidth reported to date for a photonic integrated all-waveguide resonator. This level of performance is achieved through a careful reduction of scattering and absorption loss components. We quantify, simulate and measure the various loss contributions including scattering and absorption including surface-state dangling bonds that we believe are responsible in part for absorption. In addition to the ultra-high Q and narrow linewidth, the resonator has a large optical mode area and volume, both critical for ultra-low laser linewidths and ultra-stable, ultra-low frequency noise reference cavities. These results demonstrate the performance of bulk optic and etched resonators can be realized in a photonic integrated solution, paving the way towards photonic integration compatible Billion Q cavities for precision scientific systems and applications such as nonlinear optics, atomic clocks, quantum photonics and high-capacity fiber communications systems on-chip.
We demonstrate two ways of obtaining sub-natural linewidth for probe absorption through room-temperature Rb vapor. Both techniques use a control laser that drives the transition from a different ground state. The coherent drive splits the excited state into two dressed states (Autler-Townes doublet), which have asymmetric linewidths when the control laser is detuned from resonance. In the first technique, the laser has a large detuning of 1.18 GHz to reduce the linewidth to 5.1 MHz from the Doppler width of 560 MHz. In the second technique, we use a counter-propagating pump beam to eliminate t…
We report on two ultrastable lasers each stabilized to independent silicon Fabry-Pérot cavities operated at 124 K. The fractional frequency instability of each laser is completely determined by the fundamental thermal Brownian noise of the mirror coatings with a flicker noise floor of $4 \times 10^{-17}$ for integration times between 0.8 s and a few tens of seconds. We rigorously treat the notorious divergencies encountered with the associated flicker frequency noise and derive methods to relate this noise to observable and practically relevant linewidths and coherence times. The individual la…
Highly coherent optical sources are a key element in several fields of physics, in particular in time frequency metrology. Over the past decennia, there has been particular efforts in developing such sources to the expense of sophisticated laser systems and relatively smart electronics. We propose here a new general principle of a self-adaptive oscillator where the intricate operation of a 100-m-long active optical resonator and a standard semiconductor laser offers a very high spectral purity and can be tailored to any wavelength. Single frequency operation of this self-adaptive photonic osci…
State-of-the-art optical oscillators based on lasers frequency stabilized to high finesse optical cavities are limited by thermal noise that causes fluctuations of the cavity length. Thermal noise represents a fundamental limit to the stability of an optical interferometer and plays a key role in modern optical metrology. We demonstrate a novel design to reduce the thermal noise limit for optical cavities by an order of magnitude and present an experimental realization of this new cavity system, demonstrating the most stable oscillator of any kind to date. The cavity spacer and the mirror subs…
We studied the optical properties of a resonantly excited trivalent Er ensemble in Si accessed via in situ single photon detection. A novel approach which avoids nanofabrication on the sample is introduced, resulting in a highly efficient detection of 70 excitation frequencies, of which 63 resonances have not been observed in literature. The center frequencies and optical lifetimes of all resonances have been extracted, showing that 5% of the resonances are within 1 GHz of our electrically detected resonances and that the optical lifetimes range from 0.5 ms up to 1.5 ms. We observed inhomogene…
We present a simple method for narrowing the intrinsic Lorentzian linewidth of a commercial ultraviolet grating extended-cavity diode laser (TOPTICA DL Pro) using weak optical feedback from a long external cavity. We achieve a suppression in frequency noise spectral density of 20 dB measured at frequencies around 1 MHz, corresponding to the narrowing of the intrinsic Lorentzian linewidth from 200 kHz to 2 kHz. The system is suitable for experiments requiring a tunable ultraviolet laser with narrow linewidth and low high-frequency noise, such as precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and quant…
Narrow-linewidth lasers are important to many applications spanning precision metrology to sensing systems. Characterization of these lasers requires precise measurements of their frequency noise spectra. Here we demonstrate a correlated self-heterodyne (COSH) method capable of measuring frequency noise as low as 0.01 Hz$^2$/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency. The measurement setup is characterized by both commercial and lab-built lasers, and features low optical power requirements, fast acquisition time and high intensity noise rejection.

Near transform-limited single photon sources are required for perfect photon indistinguishability in quantum networks. Having such sources in nanodiamonds is particularly important since it can enable engineering hybrid quantum photonic systems. In this letter, we report the generation of optically stable, nearly transform-limited single silicon vacancy emitters in nanodiamonds. Lines as narrow as 325 MHz are reported, which is comparable to the lifetime limited linewidth. Moreover, the emitters exhibit minimal spectrum diffusion and absolute photostability, even if pumped well above saturatio…
We demonstrate a monolithic optical whispering gallery mode resonator fabricated with barium fluoride (BaF$_2$) with an ultra-high quality ($Q$) factor above $10^9$ at $1550$ nm, and measured with both the linewidth and cavity-ring-down methods. Vertical scanning optical profilometry shows that the root mean square surface roughness of $2$ nm is achieved for our mm-size disk. To the best of our knowledge, we show for the first time that one billion $Q$-factor is achievable by precision polishing in relatively soft crystals with mohs hardness of ~$3$. We show that complex thermo-optical dynamic…
Ultra-narrow optical spectral features resulting from highly dispersive light-matter interactions are essential for a broad range of applications such as spectroscopy, slow-light, and high-precision sensing. Features approaching sub-MHz, or equivalently, Q-factors approaching ~1 billion and beyond, are challenging to obtain in solid-state systems, ultimately limited by loss. We present a novel approach to achieve tunable sub-MHz spectral features, at room temperature, without resonators. We exploit gain-enhanced polarization pulling in a twisted birefringent medium where polarization eigenmode…
We propose and demonstrate a high performance four-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), enabled by a figure-8 compound-ring-cavity (F8-CRC) filter for single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) selection and a polarization-managed four-channel filter (PM-FCF) for defining four lasing wavelengths. We introduce a novel methodology utilizing signal-flow graph combined with Mason's rule to analyze a CRC filter in general and apply it to obtain the important design parameters for the F8-CRC filter used in this paper. By combining the functions of the F8-CRC filter and the PM-FCF filter assisted by the e…
We generate 555.8nm light with sub-MHz linewidth through the use of laser injection-locking of a semiconductor diode at 1111.6nm, followed by frequency doubling in a resonant cavity. The integrity of the injection lock is investigated by studying an offset-beat signal between slave and master lasers, by performing spectroscopy on the $(6s)^{2}$ $^{1}S_{0}-\,(6s6p)$ $^{3}P_{1}$ transition in magneto-optically trapped ytterbium, and by demonstrating additional laser cooling of $^{171}$Yb with the 555.8nm light. For the $^{1}S_{0}-$ $^{3}P_{1}$ spectroscopy, we confirm the linear dependence betwe…
Integrating solid-state quantum emitters with photonic circuits is essential for realizing large-scale quantum photonic processors. Negatively charged tin-vacancy (SnV$^-$) centers in diamond have emerged as promising candidates for quantum emitters because of their excellent optical and spin properties including narrow-linewidth emission and long spin coherence times. SnV$^-$ centers need to be incorporated in optical waveguides for efficient on-chip routing of the photons they generate. However, such integration has yet to be realized. In this Letter, we demonstrate the coupling of SnV$^-$ c…
Nanodiamonds (NDs) hosting optically active defects are an important technical material for applications in quantum sensing, biological imaging, and quantum optics. The negatively charged silicon vacancy (SiV) defect is known to fluoresce in molecular sized NDs (1 to 6 nm) and its spectral properties depend on the quality of the surrounding host lattice. This defect is therefore a good probe to investigate the material properties of small NDs. Here we report unprecedented narrow optical transitions for SiV colour centers hosted in nanodiamonds produced using a novel high-pressure high-temperat…
Semiconductor mode-locked lasers can be used in a variety of applications ranging from multi-carrier sources for WDM communication systems to time base references for metrology. Their packaging in compact chip- or module-level systems remains however burdened by their strong sensitivity to back-reflections, quickly destroying the coherence of the mode-locking. Here, we investigate the stabilization of mode-locked lasers directly edge coupled to a silicon photonic integrated circuit, with the objective of moving isolators downstream to the output of the photonic circuit. A 2.77 kHz 3 dB RF line…
Planar nanophotonic structures enable broadband, near-unity coupling of emission from quantum dots embedded within, thereby realizing ideal singe-photon sources. The efficiency and coherence of the single-photon source is limited by charge noise, which results in the broadening of the emission spectrum. We report suppression of the noise by fabricating photonic crystal waveguides in a gallium arsenide membrane containing quantum dots embedded in a $p$-$i$-$n$ diode. Local electrical contacts in the vicinity of the waveguides minimize the leakage current and allow fast electrical control ($\appr…
Phase noise or frequency noise is a key metrics to evaluate the short term stability of a laser. This property is of a great interest for the applications but delicate to characterize, especially for narrow line-width lasers. In this letter, we demonstrate a digital cross correlation scheme to characterize the absolute phase noise of sub-hertz line-width lasers. Three 1,542 nm ultra-stable lasers are used in this approach. For each measurement two lasers act as references to characterize a third one. Phase noise power spectral density from 0.5 Hz to 0.8 MHz Fourier frequencies can be derived f…
Single defect centers in layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are promising candidates as single photon sources for quantum optics and nanophotonics applications. However, until today spectral instability hinders many applications. Here, we perform resonant excitation measurements and observe Fourier-Transform limited (FL) linewidths down to $\approx 50$ MHz. We investigate optical properties of more than 600 quantum emitters (QE) in hBN. The QEs exhibit narrow zero-phonon lines (ZPL) distributed over a spectral range from 580 nm to 800 nm and with dipole-like emission with high polarization …
A high-performance S-band single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring cavity laser based on a depressed cladding EDF is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. We combine a double-ring passive resonator (DR-PR) and a length of unpumped polarization maintaining (PM) EDF in the laser cavity to achieve the SLM lasing without mode hopping. The DR-PR, composed of two efficient dual-coupler fiber rings, is utilized to expand the free spectral range of the EDF ring cavity laser and to eliminate the dense longitudinal modes greatly. The PM EDF, insusceptible to random change ind…
Laser stabilization sits at the heart of many precision scientific experiments and applications, including quantum information science, metrology and atomic timekeeping. These systems narrow the laser linewidth and stabilize the carrier by use of Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking to a table-scale, ultra-high quality factor (Q), vacuum spaced Fabry-Perot reference cavity. Integrating these cavities, to bring characteristics of PDH stabilization to the chip-scale, is critical to reduce their size, cost, and weight, and enable a wide range of portable and system-on-chip applications. We report a si…
Lasers with hertz-level linewidths on timescales up to seconds are critical for precision metrology, timekeeping, and manipulation of quantum systems. Such frequency stability typically relies on bulk-optic lasers and reference cavities, where increased size is leveraged to improve noise performance, but with the trade-off of cost, hand assembly, and limited application environments. On the other hand, planar waveguide lasers and cavities exploit the benefits of CMOS scalability but are fundamentally limited from achieving hertz-level linewidths at longer times by stochastic noise and thermal …
The mechanisms responsible for ultraviolet to mid-infrared light generation in sodium vapours two-photon excited with continuous-wave sub-100 mW power resonant laser radiation are elucidated from orbital angular momentum transfer of the applied light to the generated fields. The measured 9.5 MHz-wide spectral linewidth of the light at 819.7 nm generated by four-wave mixing, sets an upper limit to the linewidth of two fields resulting from amplified spontaneous emission at 2338 nm and 9093 nm on population inverted transitions. Understanding details of this new-field generation is central to ap…
We demonstrate a narrow-linewidth 780 nm laser system with up to 40 W power and a frequency modulation bandwidth of 230 MHz. Efficient overlap on nonlinear optical elements combines two pairs of phase-locked frequency components into a single beam. Serrodyne modulation with a high-quality sawtooth waveform is used to perform frequency shifts with > 96.5 % efficiency over tens of MHz. This system enables next-generation atom interferometry by delivering simultaneous, Stark-shift-compensated dual beam splitters while minimizing spontaneous emission.
The resonance frequency of an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity is extremely important in its various applications. Many efforts have been made to fine tune this parameter. Here, we report the design and implementation of a function resonance tuner of an optical microcavity with resolution about 650 kHz (7 pm @ 1450 nm band), 20% of the optical WGM linewidth. A piezoelectric nano-positioner is used to mechanically compress the microsphere in its axial direction. The ultrafine frequency tuning is achieved benefitting from the much less changes in the axial direction than equator…
We report ultra-stable locking of a commercially available extended cavity diode laser to a vibration-insensitive high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity. A servo bandwidth of 2 MHz is demonstrated. The absolute stability of the diode laser after locking is measured with a three-cornered-hat method. The resulting Allan deviation reaches a level of $2.95\times10^{-15}$ at 1 s, corresponding to only 0.93 Hz linewidth, even without vibration isolation of the reference cavity.
The controlled creation of defect center---nanocavity systems is one of the outstanding challenges for efficiently interfacing spin quantum memories with photons for photon-based entanglement operations in a quantum network. Here, we demonstrate direct, maskless creation of atom-like single silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond nanostructures via focused ion beam implantation with $\sim 32$ nm lateral precision and $< 50$ nm positioning accuracy relative to a nanocavity. Moreover, we determine the Si+ ion to SiV center conversion yield to $\sim 2.5\%$ and observe a 10-fold conversion yield …
Solid state quantum emitters are a mainstay of quantum nanophotonics as integrated single photon sources (SPS) and optical nanoprobes. Integrating such emitters with active nanophotonic elements is desirable in order to attain efficient control of their optical properties but typically degrades the photostability of the emitter itself. Here, we demonstrate a tuneable hybrid device that integrates lifetime-limited single emitters (linewidth : 40 MHz) and 2D materials at sub-wavelength separation without degradation of the emission properties. Our device s nanoscale dimensions enable ultra-broad…
