Let $N(X)$ be the number of integral zeros $(x_1,\dots,x_6)\in [-X,X]^6$ of $\sum_{1\le i\le 6} x_i^3$. Works of Hooley and Heath-Brown imply $N(X)\ll_εX^{3+ε}$, if one assumes automorphy and GRH for certain Hasse--Weil $L$-functions. Assuming instead a natural large sieve inequality, we recover the same bound on $N(X)$. This is part of a more general statement, for diagonal cubic forms in $\geq 4$ variables, where we allow approximations to Hasse--Weil $L$-functions.
Motivated by a desire to understand the distribution of roots of cubic congruences, we re-derive a parametrization of roots $ν\pmod m$ of $X^3 \equiv 2 \pmod m$ found by Hooley. Although this parametrization does not lead us here to anything towards proving equidistribution of the sequence $\fracν{m} \pmod 1$, we are able to prove spacing results, and then a large sieve type inequality, which we view as analogous to the large sieve inequality for roots of quadratic congruences found by Fouvry and Iwaniec in their proof that there are infinitely many primes of the form $n^2 + p^2$. The parametr…
We show that for an irreducible cubic $f\in\mathbb Z[x]$ and a full norm form $\mathbf N(x_1,\ldots,x_k)$ for a number field $K/\mathbb Q$ satisfying certain hypotheses the variety $f(t)=\mathbf N(x_1,\ldots,x_k)\ne 0$ satisfies the Hasse principle. Our proof uses sieve methods.
We investigate the density of rational points on the Fermat cubic surface and the Cayley cubic surface whose coordinates have few prime factors. The key tools used are the weighted sieve, the circle method and universal torsors.
Employing Brüdern's and Wooley's new complification method, we establish an asymptotic Hasse principle for the number of solutions to a system of r_3 cubic and r_2 quadratic diagonal forms, when the number of cubic equations is at least double the number of quadratic forms. The number of variables required is lower than in earlier work. In particular, we achieve essentially square root cancellation for systems of one quadratic and arbitrarily many cubic equations.
We establish the non-singular Hasse Principle for pairs of diagonal quartic equations in 22 or more variables. Our methods involve the estimation of a certain entangled two-dimensional 21st moment of quartic smooth Weyl sums via a novel cubic moment of Fourier coefficients.
By means of the Hardy-Littlewood method, we apply a new mean value theorem for exponential sums to confirm the truth, over the rational numbers, of the Hasse principle for pairs of diagonal cubic forms in thirteen or more variables.
We establish the Hasse Principle for systems of r simultaneous diagonal cubic equations whenever the number of variables exceeds 6r and the associated coefficient matrix contains no singular r x r submatrix, thereby achieving the theoretical limit of the circle method for such systems.
A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals whose space diagonal is also integer. The existence of such cuboids is neither proved, nor disproved. A rational perfect cuboid is a natural companion of a perfect cuboid absolutely equivalent to the latter one. Its edges and face diagonals are rational numbers, while its space diagonal is equal to unity. Recently, based on a symmetry reduction, it was shown that edges of a rational perfect cuboid are roots of a certain cubic equation with rational coefficients depending on two rational parameters. F…
We are concerned with finding explicit generators of the Brauer group of diagonal cubic surfaces in terms of norm residue symbols, which was originally studied by Manin. We introduce the notion of uniform generators and find that the Brauer group of some classes of diagonal cubic surfaces have uniform generators. However, we also prove that the Brauer group of general diagonal cubic surfaces do not have such ones. This reveals that a result of Manin for certain diagonal cubic surfaces cannot be generalized in some sense.
Given a non-singular diagonal cubic hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ with $\mathrm{char} (\mathbb{F}_q)\neq 3$, we show that the number of rational points of height at most $|P|$ is $O(|P|^{3+\varepsilon})$ for $n=6$ and $O(\lvert P \rvert^{2+\varepsilon})$ for $n=4$. In fact, if $n=4$ and $\mathrm{char}(\mathbb{F}_q) >3$ we prove that the number of rational points away from any rational line contained in $X$ is bounded by $O(|P|^{3/2+\varepsilon})$. From the result in $6$ variables we deduce weak approximation for diagonal cubic hypersurfaces for $n\geq 7$ over $…
For $s=3,4$, we prove the existence of arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive integers none of which is a sum of $s$ nonnegative $s$-th powers. More generally, we study the existence of gaps between the values $\leq N$ of diagonal forms of degree $s$ in $s$ variables with positive integer coefficients. We find: (1) gaps of size $O\left(\frac{\sqrt {\log N}}{(\log \log N)^2}\right)$ when $s=3$; (2) gaps of size $O\left(\frac{\log\log\log N}{\log\log\log\log N}\right)$ if $s=4$ and the form, up to permutation of the variables, is not equal to $a (c_1x_1)^4+b (c_2 x_2)^4+4 a (c_3x_3)^4+4b(c_4x…
The system of equations \[ u_1p_1^2 + \ldots + u_sp_s^2 = 0 \] \[ v_1p_1^3 + \ldots + v_sp_s^3 = 0 \] has prime solutions $(p_1, \ldots, p_s)$ for $s \geq 12$, assuming that the system has solutions modulo each prime $p$. This is proved via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, building on Wooley's work on the corresponding system over the integers and recent results on Vinogradov's mean value theorem. Additionally, a set of sufficient conditions for local solvability is given: If both equations are solvable modulo 2, the quadratic equation is solvable modulo 3, and for each prime $p$ at least 7…
Let a1,..., a9 be non-zero integers and n any integer. Suppose that a1 + ... + a9 = n (mod 2) and (ai, aj) = 1 for 1 <= i < j <= 9. We will prove that (i) if not all of the aj's are of the same sign, then the cubic diagonal equation a1p1^3 + ... + a9p9^3 = n has prime solutions satisfying pj << n^{1/3} + max{|aj|}^{20+ e}; and (ii) if all aj are positive and n >> max{|aj|}^{61+e}, then the cubic diagonal equation a1p1^3 + ... + a9p9^3 = n is soluble in primes pj. This result is motivated from the analogous result for quadratic diagonal equations by S.K.K. Choi and J. Liu. To prove the results …
We consider diagonal cubic surfaces defined by an equation of the form ax^3+by^3+cz^3+dt^3 = 0. Numerically, one can find all rational points of height < B for B in the range of up to 100 000, thanks to a program due to D. J. Bernstein. On the other hand, there are precise conjectures concerning the constants in the asymptotics of rational points of bounded height due to Manin, Batyrev and the authors. Changing the coefficients one can obtain cubic surfaces with rank of the Picard group varying between 1 and 4. We check that numerical data are compatible with the above conjectures. In a previo…
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Finding such a cuboid is equivalent to finding a perfect cuboid with all integer edges and diagonals, which is an old unsolved problem. Recently, based on a symmetry approach, it was shown that edges and face diagonals of rational perfect cuboid are roots of two cubic equations whose coefficients depend on two rational parameters. Six special cases where these cubic equations are reducible have been already found. Two more possible c…
Let ${\mathbb F}_q$ be the finite field with $q=p^k$ elements with $p$ being a prime and $k$ be a positive integer. For any $y, z\in\mathbb{F}_q$, let $N_s(z)$ and $T_s(y)$ denote the numbers of zeros of $x_1^{3}+\cdots+x_s^3=z$ and $x_1^3+\cdots+x_{s-1}^3+yx_s^3=0$, respectively. Gauss proved that if $q=p, p\equiv1\pmod3$ and $y$ is non-cubic, then $T_3(y)=p^2+\frac{1}{2}(p-1)(-c+9d)$, where $c$ and $d$ are uniquely determined by $4p=c^2+27d^2,~c\equiv 1 \pmod 3$ except for the sign of $d$. In 1978, Chowla, Cowles and Cowles determined the sign of $d$ for the case of $2$ being a non-cubic ele…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of $q=p^k$ elements. For any $z\in \mathbb{F}_q$, let $A_n(z)$ and $B_n(z)$ denote the number of solutions of the equations $x_1^3+x_2^3+\cdots+x_n^3=z$ and $x_1^3+x_2^3+\cdots+x_n^3+zx_{n+1}^3=0$ respectively. Recently, using the generator of $\mathbb{F}^{\ast}_q$, Hong and Zhu gave the generating functions $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}A_n(z)x^n$ and $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}B_n(z)x^n$. In this paper, we give the generating functions $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}A_n(z)x^n$ and $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}B_n(z)x^n$ immediately by the coefficient $z$. Moreover, we gave the formulas of th…
For a binary quadratic form $Q$, we consider the action of $\mathrm{SO}_Q$ on a two-dimensional vector space. This representation yields perhaps the simplest nontrivial example of a prehomogeneous vector space that is not irreducible, and of a coregular space whose underlying group is not semisimple. We show that the nondegenerate integer orbits of this representation are in natural bijection with orders in cubic fields having a fixed "lattice shape". Moreover, this correspondence is discriminant-preserving: the value of the invariant polynomial of an element in this representation agrees with…
We investigate pairs of diagonal cubic equations with integral coefficients. For a class of such Diophantine systems with 11 or more variables, we are able to establish that the number of integral solutions in a large box is at least as large as the expected order of magnitude.

We prove that the ring of integers in the totally real cubic subfield $K^{(49)}$ of the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_7)$ has Pythagoras number equal to $4$. This is the smallest possible value for a totally real number field of odd degree. Moreover, we determine which numbers are sums of integral squares in this field, and use this knowledge to construct a diagonal universal quadratic form in five variables.
We apply a variant of the multigrade efficient congruencing method to estimate Vinogradov's integral of degree $3$ for moments of order $2s$, establishing strongly diagonal behaviour for $1\le s\le 6$. Consequently, the main conjecture is now known to hold for the first time in a case of degree exceeding $2$.

Following a strategy suggested by Michel--Venkatesh, we study the cubic moment of automorphic $L$-functions on $\operatorname{PGL}_2$ using regularized diagonal periods of products of Eisenstein series. Our main innovation is to produce vectors whose integral transforms achieve arbitrarily weighted moments. Applications include general Motohashi-type identities and Weyl-type subconvex bounds for some families of $L$-functions, extending some results of Conrey--Iwaniec and Petrow--Young to the number field setting. We deduce improved estimates for representation numbers of ternary quadratic for…
We show that if over some number field there exists a certain diagonal plane cubic curve that is locally solvable everywhere, but that does not have points over any cubic galois extension of the number field, then the algebraic part of the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for K3 surfaces.
Katz and Sarnak conjectured that the statistics of low-lying zeros of various family of $L$-functions matched with the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the random matrix theory. In this paper we confirm this statistic for a family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions matches up with corresponding statistic in the random unitary ensemble, in a range that includes the off-diagonal contribution. To estimate the $n$-level density of zeros of the $L$-functions, we use the asymptotic large sieve method developed by Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan. For the random matrix side, a formula from Conrey…
For a set of integers $A$, we consider $R(A)=\{a/b: a, b\in A, b\neq 0\}$. It is an open problem to study the denseness of $R(A)$ in the $p$-adic numbers when $A$ is the set of nonzero values attained by an integral form. This problem has been answered for quadratic forms. Very recently, Antony and Barman have studied this problem for the diagonal binary cubic forms $ax^3+by^3$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers. In this article, we study this problem for diagonal forms. We extend the results of Antony and Barman to the diagonal binary forms $ax^n+by^n$ for all $n\geq 3$. We also study $p$-adic d…
The distribution of intersections in $\mathrm{SL}(3, \mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathrm{SL}(3, \mathbb{R})$ and lattices related to roots of cubic congruences
In this paper, we study the diagonal restrictions of certain Hilbert theta series for a totally real field $F$, and prove that they span the corresponding space of elliptic modular forms when the $F$ is quadratic or cubic. Furthermore, we give evidence of this phenomenon when $F$ is quartic, quintic and sextic.
We prove that almost any pair of real numbers a,b, satisfies the following inhomogeneous uniform version of Littlewood's conjecture: (*) forall x,y in R, liminf_{|n|\to\infty} |n|<na - x> <nb - y> = 0, where <-> denotes the distance from the nearest integer. The existence of even a single pair that satisfies (*), solves a problem of Cassels from the 50's. We then prove that if 1,a,b span a totally real number field, then a,b, satisfy (*). It is further shown that if 1,a,b, are linearly dependent over Q, a,b cannot satisfy (*). The results are then applied to give examples of irregular orbit cl…
