We show that derivation of Friedmann's equations from the Einstein-Hilbert action, paying attention to the requirements of isotropy and homogeneity during the variation, leads to a different interpretation of pressure than what is typically adopted. Our derivation follows if we assume that the unapproximated metric and Einstein tensor have convergent perturbation series representations on a sufficiently large Robertson-Walker coordinate patch. We find the source necessarily averages all pressures, everywhere, including the interiors of compact objects. We demonstrate that our considerations apply (on appropriately restricted spacetime domains) to the Kerr solution, the Schwarzschild constant-density sphere, and the static de-Sitter sphere. From conservation of stress-energy, it follows that material contributing to the averaged pressure must shift locally in energy. We show that these cosmological energy shifts are entirely negligible for non-relativistic material. In relativistic material, however, the effect can be significant. We comment on the implications of this study for the dark energy problem.
Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology is examined from the point of view of gravitoelectromagnetism, in the approximation of spacetime regions small in comparison with the Hubble radius. The usual Lorentz gauge is not appropriate for this situation, while the Painlevé-Gullstrand gauge is rather natural. Several non-trivial features and differences with respect to "standard" asymptotically flat gravitoelectromagnetism are discussed.
In this article, we study the equations driving the dynamics of a Bianchi-I universe described by holonomy corrected effective loop quantum cosmology. We derive the LQC-modified generalized Friedmann equation, which is used as a guide to find different types of solutions. It turns out that, in this framework, most solutions never reach the classical behavior.
A Friedmann like cosmological model in Einstein-Cartan framework is studied when the torsion function is assumed to be proportional to a single $ϕ(t)$ function coming just from the spin vector contribution of ordinary matter. By analysing four different types of torsion function written in terms of one, two and three free parameters, we found that a model with $ϕ(t)=- αH(t) \big({ρ_{m}(t)}/{ρ_{0c}}\big)^n$ is totally compatible with recent cosmological data, where $α$ and $n$ are free parameters to be constrained from observations, $ρ_m$ is the matter energy density and $ρ_{0c}$ the critical d…
The first-order loop quantum gravity correction of the simplest, classical general-relativistic Friedmann Hamiltonian constraint, emerging from a holomorphic spinfoam cosmological model peaked on homogeneous, isotropic geometries, is studied. The quantum Hamiltonian constraint, satisfied by the EPRL transition amplitude between the boundary cosmological coherent states, includes a contribution of the order of the Planck constant $\hbar$ that also appears in the corresponding semiclassical symplectic model. The analysis of this term gives a quantum-gravitational correction to the classical Frie…
In a previous paper we derived a post-Newtonian approximation to cosmology which, in contrast to former Newtonian and post-Newtonian cosmological theories, has a well-posed initial value problem. In this paper, this new post-Newtonian theory is compared with the fully general relativistic theory, in the context of the k = 0 Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmologies. It is found that the post-Newtonian theory reproduces the results of its general relativistic counterpart, whilst the Newtonian theory does not.
A string-inspired duality symmetry of the spatially flat Friedmann equations of general-relativistic cosmology is discussed and generalized, providing a map between exact solutions corresponding to different values of the barotropic index.
We present exact solutions to the Friedmann equation in standard cosmology in Weierstrass and Jacobi functions. The right hand side of the Friedmann equation describing various contributions of matter sources is considered in generic form. It is proved that the problem of integration of the Friedmann equation for simple EoS of medium is reduced to solving Abel integrals for algebraic functions.
In the context of Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation, the cosmological Friedmann equation which relates the expansion rate $H$ of the universe to the various fractions of energy density is analyzed rigorously. It is shown that Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation brings a negligible correction to the matter density component of Friedmann equation. Besides, in addition to $Ω_Λ$ and $Ω_{M}$ in standard Einstein cosmology, another density parameter, $Ω_{_Δ}$, is expected by the theory. This implies that if $Ω_{_Δ}$ is found to be nonzero, data will favor this model instead…
We propose and study a semi-classical cosmological system akin to the Newton-Schrödinger equation where matter field evolution is determined by time dependent Schrödinger equation. The resulting dynamics is one where the scale factor self-consistently informs the quantum evolution of the scalar field wave function via the Friedmann equation. We study various potentials, and show that for each case, inflation arises naturally, without fine-tuning, for arbitrary initial wave functions for the scalar field. Furthermore, due to zero-point quantum fluctuations of the scalar field, the equation of s…
An intrinsic time of homogeneous models is global. The Friedmann equation by its sense ties time intervals. Exact solutions of the Friedmann equation in Standard cosmology and Conformal cosmology are presented. Theoretical curves interpolated the Hubble diagram on latest supernovae are expressed in analytical form. The class of functions in which the concordance model is described is Weierstrass meromorphic functions. The Standard cosmological model and Conformal one fit the modern Hubble diagram equivalently. However, the physical interpretation of the modern data from concepts of the Conform…
We show that the dynamics of a spatially closed Friedmann - Robertson - Walker Universe conformally coupled to a real, free, massive scalar field, is chaotic, for large enough field amplitudes. We do so by proving that this system is integrable under the adiabatic approximation, but that the corresponding KAM tori break up when non adiabatic terms are considered. This finding is confirmed by numerical evaluation of the Lyapunov exponents associated with the system, among other criteria. Chaos sets strong limitations to our ability to predict the value of the field at the Big Crunch, from its g…
Elliptic functions are known to appear in many problems, applied and theoretical. However, a lesser known application is in the study of exact solutions to Einstein's gravitational field equations in a Friedmann-Robertson-Lemaitre-Walker (FRLW) cosmology. We will show explicitly how Jacobi and Weierstrass elliptic functions arise in this context, and will additionally show connections with theta functions.
We study the Lie point symmetries of Einstein's equations for the Friedmann-Roberstson-Walker Cosmology. They form either a two - dimensional or a three - dimensional solvable group depending on the form of the self interacting potential. Using the invariants of the group we reduce the second order system of differential equations into a first order system. Writing the action in terms of the proper time we study the point symmetries and the variational symmetries of the resulting equations.
A cosmological model in an Einstein-Cartan framework endowed with torsion is studied. For a torsion function assumed to be proportional to Hubble expansion function, namely $ϕ=-αH$, the contribution of torsion function as a dark matter component is studied in two different approaches. In the first one, the total matter energy density is altered by torsion coupling $α$, giving rise to an effective dark matter and cosmological constant terms that reproduce quite well the flat cosmic concordance model. In the second approach, starting with just standard baryonic matter plus a cosmological constan…
We derive the Friedmann-like equations in braneworld cosmology by imposing the first law of thermodynamics and Bekenstein's area-entropy formula on the apparent horizon of a Friedmann-Roberston-Walker universe in both Randall-Sundrum II gravity and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati gravity models. Israel's boundary condition plays an important role in our calculations in both cases, besides the first law of thermodynamics and Bekenstein's area-entropy formula. The results indicate that thermodynamics on the brane world knows the behaviors of gravity.
A unified framework for theories of modified gravity will be an essential tool for interpreting the forthcoming deluge of cosmological data. We present such a formalism, the Parameterized Post-Friedmann framework (PPF), which parameterizes the cosmological perturbation theory of a wide variety of modified gravity models. PPF is able to handle spin-0 degrees of freedom from new scalar, vector and tensor fields, meaning that it is not restricted to simple models based solely on cosmological scalar fields. A direct correspondence is maintained between the parameterization and the underlying space…
Motivated by the proposed time-delayed cosmology in the primordial inflationary era, we consider the application of the delayed Friedmann equation in the late-time Universe and explore some of its observable consequences. We study the background evolution predicted by the delayed Friedmann equation and determine the growth of Newtonian perturbations in this delayed background. We reveal smoking-gun imprints of time-delayed cosmology that can be traced to derivative discontinuities generic in delay differential equations. We show that a late-time cosmic delay is statistically consistent with Hu…
An intrinsic local time in Geometrodynamics is obtained with using a scaled Dirac's mapping. By addition of a background metric, one can construct a scalar field. It is suitable to play a role of intrinsic time. Cauchy problem was successfully solved in conformal variables because they are physical ones. First, the intrinsic time as a logarithm of determinant of spatial metric, was applied to a cosmological problem by Misner. A global time is exist under condition of constant mean curvature slicing of spacetime. A volume of hypersurface and the so-called mean York's time are canonical conjugat…
The Hubble tension cast a blight on the standard cosmology. As a possible attitude to the problem, the local variation of the expansion rate in an inhomogeneous cosmology has been proposed where the spatial averaging over a finite domain was introduced in order to construct local Friedmann spacetime. However, it is not clear that the concept of the spatial averaging itself is gauge invariant or not. Namely the conclusion obtained by the averaging in a particular gauge is physically meaningful or not. In this paper we address this question, namely the gauge invariance of the spatial averaging i…
Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) is a theory which renders the Big Bang initial singularity into a quantum bounce, by means of short range repulsive quantum effects at the Planck scale. In this work, we are interested in reproducing the effective Friedmann equation of LQC, by considering a generic $f(R,P,Q)$ theory of gravity, where $R=g^{μν}R_{μν}$ is the Ricci scalar, $P=R_{μν}R^{μν}$, and $Q=R_{αβμν}R^{αβμν}$ is the Kretschmann scalar. An order reduction technique allows us to work in $f(R,P,Q)$ theories which are perturbatively close to General Relativity, and to deduce a modified Friedmann eq…
This paper is devoted to the approach to gravity as a theory of a surface embedded in a flat ambient space. After the brief review of the properties of original theory by Regge and Teitelboim we concentrate on its field-theoretic reformulation, which we call splitting theory. In this theory embedded surfaces are defined through the constant value surfaces of some set of scalar fields in high-dimensional Minkowski space. We obtain an exact expressions for this scalar fields in the case of Friedmann universe. We also discuss the features of quantisation procedure for this field theory.
In this paper cosmological dynamics in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a perfect fluid source in arbitrary dimension is studied. A systematic analysis is performed for the case that the theory does not admit maximally symmetric solutions. Considering two independent scale factors, namely one for the three dimensional space and one for the extra dimensional space, is found that a regime exists where the two scale factors tend to a constant value via damped oscillations for not too negative pressure of the fluid, so that asymptotically the evolution of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Friedmann model …
We study the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model to investigate non-smooth curvatures associated with multiple discontinuities involved in the evolution of the universe, by exploiting Lorentzian warped product scheme. Introducing double discontinuities occurred at the radiation-matter and matter-lambda phase transitions, we also discuss non-smooth features of the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe.
It is shown that the tunneling effect in quantum cosmology is possible not only at the very beginning or the very end of the evolution, but also at the moment of maximum expansion of the universe. A positive curvature expanding Friedmann universe changes its state of evolution spontaneously and completely, {\it without} any changes in the matter content, avoiding recollapse, and falling into oscillations between the nonzero values of the scale factor. On the other hand, an oscillating nonsingular universe can tunnel spontaneously to a recollapsing regime. The probability of such kind of tunnel…
The problem of particle creation in cosmology concerning whether the results for the number of particles are infinite or finite is discussed for scalar and spinor particles in Friedmann expanding Universe. It is shown that the results are always finite if one puts in case of scalar particles creation a special term into the Lagrangian. Numerical estimates of the effect of particle creation are made. The role of creation of superheavy particles in cosmology is discussed.
The classical and quantum dynamics of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe with massless scalar and massive fermion matter field as a source is discussed in the framework of the Dirac generalized Hamiltonian formalism. The Hamiltonian reduction of this constrained system is realized for two cases of minimal and conformal coupling between gravity and matter. It is shown that in both cases for all values of curvature, of maximally symmetric space there exists a time independent reduced local Hamiltonian which describes the dynamics of the cosmic scale factor. The relevance of conformal time-l…
In this paper, we study $F(R)$ gravity by Hu-Sawicki model in Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. The Friedmann equations are calculated by modified gravity action, and then the obtained Friedmann equations are written in terms of standard Friedmann equations. Next behavior of bouncing cosmology is investigated in the modified gravity model, i.e., this behavior can solve problem of non-singular in standard Big Bang cosmology. We plot the cosmological parameters in terms of cosmic time and then bouncing condition is investigated. In what follows, we reconstruct the modified…
The dynamical behaviors of interacting dark energy in loop quantum cosmology are discussed in this paper. Based on defining three dimensionless variables, we simplify the equations of the fixed points. The fixed points for interacting dark energy can be determined by the Friedmann equation coupled with the dynamical equations {in Einstein cosmology}. But in loop quantum cosmology, besides the Friedmann equation, the conversation equation also give a constrain on the fixed points. The difference of stability properties for the fixed points in loop quantum cosmology and the ones in Einstein cosm…
Recently the so-called mimetic gravity approach has been used to obtain corrections to Friedmann equation of General Relativity similar to the ones present in loop quantum cosmology. In this paper, we propose an alternative way to derive this modified Friedmann equation via the so-called non-polynomial gravity approach, which consists in adding geometric non-polynomial higher derivative terms to Hilbert-Einstein action, which are nonetheless polynomials and lead to second order differential equation in Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Our explicit action turns out to be a realiz…
In the Friedmann Model of the universe, cosmologists assume that spacelike slices of the universe are Riemannian manifolds of constant sectional curvature. This assumption is justified via Schur's Theorem by stating that the spacelike universe is locally isotropic. Here we define a Riemannian manifold as almost locally isotropic in a sense which allows both weak gravitational lensing in all directions and strong gravitational lensing in localized angular regions at most points. We then prove that such a manifold is Gromov Hausdorff close to a length space $Y$ which is a collection of space for…
We investigate the cosmological aspects of the most general parity preserving Metric-Affine Gravity theory quadratic in torsion and non-metricity in the presence of a cosmological hyperfluid. The equations of motion are obtained by varying the action with respect to the metric and the independent affine connection. Subsequently, considering a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background, we derive the most general form of the modified Friedmann equations for the full quadratic theory. We then focus on a characteristic sub-case involving only two quadratic contributions given in terms of tors…
We disclose the effects of the entropic corrections to the Friedmann equations on the growth of perturbations in the early stages of the universe. We consider two types of corrections to the area law of entropy, known as Tsallis and Barrow entropies. Using these corrections to entropy, we derive the modified Friedmann equations and explore the growth of perturbations in a flat universe filled with dark matter (DM) and cosmological constant. We employ the spherically symmetric collapse formalism and work in the linear regime for the perturbations. Interestingly enough, we find out that the prof…
We study the evolution of a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime whose spatial sections have three-torus topology, coupled to a massless scalar field with small scalar perturbations within loop quantum cosmology. We consider a proposal for the effective dynamics based on a previous hybrid quantization completed by us. Consequently, we introduce a convenient gauge fixing and adopt reduced canonical variables adapted to that hybrid quantum description. Besides, we keep backreaction contributions on the background coming from terms quadratic in the perturbations in the action of the system. We car…
Despite all fundamental objections against Newtonian concepts in cosmology, the Friedmann equation derives from these in an astoundingly simple way through application of the shell theorem and conservation of Newtonian energy in an infinite universe. However, Friedmann universes in general posses a finite gravitational horizon, as a result of which the application of the shell theorem fails and the Newtonian derivation collapses. We show that in the presence of a gravitational horizon the Friedmann equation can be derived from a Machian definition of kinetic energy, without invoking the shell …
A late epoch cosmic acceleration may be naturally entangled with cosmic coincidence -- the observation that at the onset of acceleration the vacuum energy density fraction nearly coincides with the matter density fraction. In this Letter we show that this is indeed the case with the cosmology of a Friedmann-Lamaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) 3-brane in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We derive the four-dimensional effective action on a FLRW 3-brane, which helps define a general reduction formula, namely, $M_P^{2}=ρ_{b}/|Λ_5|$, where $M_{P}$ is the effective Planck mass, $Λ_5$ is the…
We develop approximation methods in the hybrid quantization of the Gowdy model with linear polarization and a massless scalar field, for the case of three-torus spatial topology. The loop quantization of the homogeneous gravitational sector of the Gowdy model (according to the improved dynamics prescription) and the presence of inhomogeneities lead to a very complicated Hamiltonian constraint. Therefore, the extraction of physical results calls for the introduction of well justified approximations. We first show how to approximate the homogeneous part of the Hamiltonian constraint, correspondi…
Considering Verlinde's entropic gravity proposal, we focus the effects of fermionic $q$ deformation on the Einstein's field equations and Friedmann equations. For this purpose, we represent the thermodynamical properties of the deformed fermion gas model in two-dimensional space. To describe the behavior of the quantum black holes, deformed Einstein field equations are derived with the help of deformed entropy function. Moreover, deformed Friedmann equations are investigated by using Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric. We also present the effective ones of the energy density, the pressure…
The theoretical and observational consequences of thermodynamics of open systems, which allow particle creation are investigated in modified $f(R,T)$ ($R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of energy-momentum tensor) theory of gravity within the framework of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker line element. A simplest particular model $f(R,T)=R+2f(T)$ and "gamma-law" equation of state $p=(γ-1)ρ$ are assumed to explore the role of particle creation in the early and late time evolution of the universe. A power-law expansion model is proposed for $0\leq γ\leq 2$ by considering the natural phe…
In this paper, we study the main cosmological properties of the classical Friedmann equations in the case of homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe and we also generalized the expression of the Friedmann equation in the case of Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). Considering the $M_{35}$-model, we found the solutions of the equations considered for two particular cases, i.e. $Q=0$ (i.e., the de Sitter solution) and $Q>0$. Moreover, we considered and studied two exact cosmological solutions of the $M_{35}$-model, in particular the power-law and the exponential ones. Futhermore,…
We study a Randall-Sundrum model modified by a Gauss-Bonnet interaction term. We consider, in particular, a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric on the brane and analyse the resulting cosmological scenario. It is shown that the usual Friedmann equations are recovered on the brane. The equation of state relating the enery density and the pressure is uniquely determined by the matching conditions. A cosmological solution with negative pressure is found.
We explore the quantum cosmology description of the de Sitter (dS) radiation and its backreaction to dS space, inherent in the wave function of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for pure gravity with a cosmological constant. We first investigate the quantum Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological model and then consider possible effects of inhomogeneities of the universe on the dS radiation. In both the cases we obtain the modified Friedmann equation, including the backreaction from spacetime fluctuations, and the quantum-corrected dS temperature. It is shown that the quantum correction inc…
The Wheeler-DeWitt equation is solved for the Bergmann-Wagoner scalar-tensor gravitational theory in the case of Friedmann-Robertson- Walker cosmological model. We present solutions for several cosmological functions: i) λ(ϕ)=0, ii) λ(ϕ)=3Λ_0ϕand iii) a more complex λ(ϕ), that depends on the choice of the coupling function, considering closed, flat and hyperbolic Friedmann universes (k=1, 0, -1). In the first two cases we show particular quantum wormhole solutions. Also, classical solutions are considered for some scalar-tensor theories, and we study the third quantization of some minisuperspa…
It has been known for some time that the cosmological Friedmann equation deduced from General Relativity can be also obtained within the Newtonian framework under certain assumptions. We use this result together with quantum corrections to the Newtonian potentials to derive a set a of quantum corrected Friedmann equations. We examine the behavior of the solutions of these modified cosmological equations paying special attention to the sign of the quantum corrections. We find different quantum effects crucially depending on this sign. One such a solution displays a qualitative resemblance to ot…
We extend various recent results regarding the derivation of effective cosmological Friedmann equations from the dynamics of group field theory (GFT). Restricting ourselves to a single GFT field mode (or fixed values of Peter-Weyl representation labels), we first consider dynamics given by a quadratic Hamiltonian, which takes the form of a squeezing operator, and then add a quartic interaction that can be seen as a toy model for interactions in full GFT. Our derivation of effective Friedmann equations does not require a mean-field approximation; we mostly follow a general approach in which the…
