This paper is concerned with reconstruction issue of some typical inverse problems and consists of three parts. First a framework of the enclosure method for an inverse source problem governed by the Helmholtz equation at a fixed wave number in three dimensions is introduced. It is based on the nonvanishing of the coefficient of the leading profile of an oscillatory integral over a domain having a conical singularity. Second an explicit formula of the coefficient for a domain having a circular cone singularity and its implication under the framework are given. Third, an application under the framework to an inverse obstacle problem governed by an inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation at a fixed wave number in three dimensions is given.
We consider an inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation in a bounded domain. The problem is to reconstruct the shape of the support of a source term from the Cauchy data on the boundary of the solution of the governing equation. We prove that if the shape is a polygon, one can calculate its support function from such data. An application to the inverse boundary value problem is also included.
In this paper, we study the performance of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) from time-harmonic Cauchy data via conditional well-posedness driven iterative regularization. The Cauchy data can be obtained with dual sensors measuring the pressure and the normal velocity. We define a novel misfit functional which, adapted to the Cauchy data, allows the independent location of experimental and computational sources. The conditional well-posedness is obtained for a hierarchy of subspaces in which the inverse problem with partial data is Lipschitz stable. Here, these subspaces yield piecewise linear rep…
For the isotropic Lamé system, we prove in dimensions three or larger that both Lamé coefficients are uniquely recovered from partial Cauchy data on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary provided that the coefficient $μ$ is a priori close to a constant.
We construct solutions to p-Laplace type equations in unbounded Lipschitz domains in the plane with prescribed boundary data in appropriate fractional Sobolev spaces. Our approach builds on a Cauchy integral representation formula for solutions.
We study the Cauchy problem for Fokker--Planck--Kolmogorov equations with unbounded and degenerate coefficients. Sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of solutions are indicated.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for multidimensional elliptic equations in a cylindrical domain. The method of spectral expansion in eigenfunctions of the Cauchy problem for equations with deviating argument establishes a criterion of the strong solvability of the considered elliptic Cauchy problem. It is shown that the ill-posedness of the elliptic Cauchy problem is equivalent to the existence of an isolated point of the continuous spectrum for a self-adjoint operator with deviating argument.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the wave equation in $Ω\times{\mathbb R}$ with data given on some part of the boundary $\partialΩ\times{\mathbb R}$. We provide a reconstruction algorithm for this problem based on analytic expressions. Our result is applicable to the problem of determining nonstationary wave field arising in geophysics, photoacoustic tomography, tsunami wave source recovery.
A numerical method for the computation of the magnetic flux in the vacuum surrounding the plasma in a Tokamak is investigated. It is based on the formulation of a Cauchy problem which is solved through the minimization of an energy error functional. Several numerical experiments are conducted which show the efficiency of the method.
The subject of the paper is the Cauchy problem for the wave equation in a space-time cylinder $Ω\times{\mathbb R}$, $Ω\subset{\mathbb R}^2$, with the data on the surface $\partialΩ\times I$, where $I$ is a finite time interval. The algorithm for solving the Cauchy problem with the data on $S\times I$, $S\subset\partialΩ$, was obtained previously. Here we adapt this algorithm to the special case $S=\partialΩ$ and show that in this situation, the solution is determined with higher stability in comparison with the case $S\subsetneqq\partialΩ$.
We consider the problem of recovering the coefficient σ(x) of the elliptic equation \grad \cdot(σ\grad u)=0 in a body from measurements of the Cauchy data on possibly very small subsets of its surface. We give a constructive proof of a uniqueness result by Kenig, Sjöstrand, and Uhlmann. We construct a uniquely specified family of solutions such that their traces on the boundary can be calculated by solving an integral equation which involves only the given partial Cauchy data. The construction entails a new family of Green's functions for the Laplacian, and corresponding single layer potential…
We consider an inverse problem for electrically conductive material occupying a domain $Ω$ in $\Bbb R^2$. Let $γ$ be the conductivity of $Ω$, and $D$ a subdomain of $Ω$. We assume that $γ$ is a positive constant $k$ on $D$, $k\not=1$ and is $1$ on $Ω\setminus D$; both $D$ and $k$ are unknown. The problem is to find a reconstruction formula of $D$ from the Cauchy data on $\partialΩ$ of a non-constant solution $u$ of the equation $\nabla\cdotγ\nabla u=0$ in $Ω$. We prove that if $D$ is known to be a convex polygon such that $\text{diam}\,D<\text{dist}\,(D,\partialΩ)$, there are two formulae for …
In this paper we consider the problem of analytical continuation of solutions to the system of thermoelasticity in a bounded domain from their values and values of their strains on a part of the boundary of this domain, i.e., the Cauchy problem.
Tomographic image reconstruction is well understood if the specimen being studied is stationary during data acquisition. However, if this specimen changes during the measuring process, standard reconstruction techniques can lead to severe motion artefacts in the computed images. Solving a dynamic reconstruction problem therefore requires to model and incorporate suitable information on the dynamics in the reconstruction step to compensate for the motion. Many dynamic processes can be described by partial differential equations which thus could serve as additional information for the purpose of…
We consider the nonstationary linearized Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain and first we prove a Carleman estimate with a regular weight function. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to a lateral Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes equations and prove the Hölder stability in determining the velocity and pressure field in an interior domain.
Via Carleman estimates we prove uniqueness and continuous dependence results for lateral Cauchy problems for linear integro-differential parabolic equations without initial conditions. The additional information supplied prescribes the conormal derivative of the temperature on a relatively open subset of the lateral boundary of the space-time domain.
In this short paper we prove a global logarithmic stability of the Cauchy problem for H 2-solutions of an anisotropic elliptic equation in a Lip-schitz domain. The result we obtained is based on tools borrowed from the existing technics to establish stability estimate for the Cauchy problem [4] (see also [1]) combined with tools we already used in [6] to study an inverse medium problem.
This paper develops an abstract theory for subdifferential operators to give existence and uniqueness of solutions to the initial-boundary problem (P) for the nonlinear diffusion equation in an unbounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\in{\mathbb N}$), written as \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + (-Δ+1)β(u) = g \quad \mbox{in}\ Ω\times(0, T), \] which represents the porous media, the fast diffusion equations, etc., where $β$ is a single-valued maximal monotone function on $\mathbb{R}$, and $T>0$. Existence and uniqueness for (P) were directly proved under a growth condition for $β$ even tho…
In a fractional Cauchy problem, the usual first order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative. The fractional derivative models time delays in a diffusion process. The order of the fractional derivative can be distributed over the unit interval, to model a mixture of delay sources. In this paper, we provide explicit strong solutions and stochastic analogues for distributed-order fractional Cauchy problems on bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Stochastic solutions are constructed using a non-Markovian time change of a killed Markov process generated by a uniforml…
The uniqueness of parabolic Cauchy problems is nowadays a classical problem and since Hadamard \cite{Ha} these kind of problems are known to be ill-posed and even severely ill-posed. Until now there are only few partial results concerning the quantification of the stability for parabolic Cauchy problems. In the present article, we bring the complete answer to this issue, provided that the space domain has finite diameter with respect to the geodesic distance and assuming that solutions are sufficiently smooth.
Fractional Cauchy problems replace the usual first-order time derivative by a fractional derivative. This paper develops classical solutions and stochastic analogues for fractional Cauchy problems in a bounded domain $D\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Stochastic solutions are constructed via an inverse stable subordinator whose scaling index corresponds to the order of the fractional time derivative. Dirichlet problems corresponding to iterated Brownian motion in a bounded domain are then solved by establishing a correspondence with the case of a half-derivative in time…
This article is devoted to the Cauchy problem for the 2D gravity-capillary water waves in fluid domains with general bottoms. We prove that the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces is uniquely solvable for data $\frac{1}{4}$ derivatives less regular than the energy threshold (obtained by Alazard-Burq-Zuily), which corresponds to the gain of Holder regularity of the semiclassical Strichartz estimate for the fully nonlinear system. To obtain this result, we establish global, quantitative results for the paracomposition theory of Alinhac.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz equation with a domain in R^d, d>2 with N cylindrical outlets to infinity with bounded inclusions in R^{d-1}. Cauchy data are prescribed on the boundary of the bounded domains and the aim is to find solution on the unbounded part of the boundary. In 1989, Kozlov and Maz'ya proposed an alternating iterative method for solving Cauchy problems associated with elliptic,self-adjoint and positive-definite operators in bounded domains. Different variants of this method for solving Cauchy problems associated with Helmholtz-type operators exists. We cons…
We prove the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem on torus to an eletromagnetoelastic system. The physical model consists of three coupled partial differential equations, one of them is a hyperbolic equation describing the elastic medium and two other ones form a parabolic system, which comes from Maxwell's equations. Experimental measurements suggest that the elastic medium has a periodic structure, moreover with finite number of discontinuities on the fundamental domain. Thus we have study in this paper the problem which we have defined as periodically Cauchy diffraction problem.
Although there are many results on the global solvability and the precise description of the large time behaviors of solutions to the initial-boundary value problems of the one-dimensional viscous radiative and reactive gas in bounded domain with two typical types of boundary conditions, no result is available up to now for the corresponding problems in unbounded domain. This paper focuses on the Cauchy problem of such a system with prescribed large initial data and the main purpose is to construct its global smooth non-vacuum solutions around a non-vacuum constant equilibrium state and to stu…
We consider time-changed Brownian motions on random Koch (pre-fractal and fractal) domains where the time change is given by the inverse to a subordinator. In particular, we study the fractional Cauchy problem with Robin condition on the pre-fractal boundary obtaining asymptotic results for the corresponding fractional diffusions with Robin, Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the fractal domain.
We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for semilinear wave equations in a three space dimensional domain exterior to a bounded and non-trapping obstacle. We obtain a detailed estimate for the lower bound of the lifespan of classical solutions when the size of initial data tends to zero, in a similar spirit to that of the works of John and Hörmander where the Cauchy problem was treated. We show that our estimate is sharp at least for some special case.
We consider an isotropic elastic medium occupying a bounded domain D whose density and Lamé parameters are piecewise smooth. In the elastic wave initial value inverse problem, we are given the solution operator for the elastic wave equation, but only outside the domain D and only for initial data supported outside D, and we study the recovery of the density and Lamé parameters. For known density, results have recently been obtained using the scattering control method to recover wave speeds. Here, we extend this result to include the recovery of the density in addition to the Lamé parameters un…
This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of two-dimensional (2D) full compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ with zero density at infinity. By spatial weighted energy method, we derive the local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the initial density and the initial magnetic field decay not too slowly at infinity. Note that the initial temperature does not need to decay slowly at infinity. In particular, vacuum states at both the interior domain and the far field are allowed.
We consider the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional (1D) barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and large external force. Under a general assumption on the density-dependent viscosity, we prove that the Cauchy problem admits a unique global strong (classical) solution for the large initial data with vacuum. Moreover, the density is proved to be bounded from above time-independently. As a consequence, we obtain the large time behavior of the solution without external forces.
In this paper we will show the duality between the range test (RT) and no-response test (NRT) for the inverse boundary value problem for the Laplace equation in $Ω\setminus\overline D$ with an obstacle $D\SubsetΩ$ whose boundary $\partial D$ is visible from the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ and a measurement is given as a set of Cauchy data on $\partialΩ$. Here the Cauchy data is given by a unique solution $u$ of the boundary value problem for the Laplace equation in $Ω\setminus\overline D$ with homogeneous and inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on $\partial D$ and $\partialΩ$, respectiv…
Ultrasound modulation of electrical or optical properties of materials offers the possibility to devise hybrid imaging techniques that combine the high electrical or optical contrast observed in many settings of interest with the high resolution of ultrasound. Mathematically, these modalities require that we reconstruct a diffusion coefficient $σ(x)$ for $x\in X$, a bounded domain in $\Rm^n$, from knowledge of $σ(x)|\nabla u|^2(x)$ for $x\in X$, where $u$ is the solution to the elliptic equation $-\nabla\cdotσ\nabla u=0$ in $X$ with $u=f$ on $\partial X$. This inverse problem may be recast as …
In this paper, we considered the problem of analytical continuation of the solution of the system equations of the moment theory of elasticity in spacious bounded domain from its values and values of its strains on part of the boundary of this domain, i.e., the Cauchy's problem.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for gravity water waves, in a domain with a flat bottom and in arbitrary space dimension. We prove that if the data are of size $\varepsilon$ in a space of analytic functions which have a holomorphic extension in a strip of size $σ$, then the solution exists up to a time of size $C/\varepsilon$ in a space of analytic functions having at time $t$ a holomorphic extension in a strip of size $σ- C'\varepsilon t$.
In a fractional Cauchy problem, the usual first order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative. This problem was first considered by \citet{nigmatullin}, and \citet{zaslavsky} in $\mathbb R^d$ for modeling some physical phenomena. The fractional derivative models time delays in a diffusion process. We will give a survey of the recent results on the fractional Cauchy problem and its generalizations on bounded domains $D\subset \rd$ obtained in \citet{m-n-v-aop, mnv-2}. We also study the solutions of fractional Cauchy problem where the first time derivative is replaced with an infi…
We study the homogeneous Cauchy-Dirichlet Problem (CDP) for a nonlinear and nonlocal diffusion equation of singular type of the form $\partial_t u =-\mathcal{L} u^m$ posed on a bounded Euclidean domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary and $N\ge 1$. The linear diffusion operator $\mathcal{L}$ is a sub-Markovian operator, allowed to be of nonlocal type, while the nonlinearity is of singular type, namely $u^m=|u|^{m-1}u$ with $0<m<1$. The prototype equation is the Fractional Fast Diffusion Equation (FFDE), when $\mathcal{L}$ is one of the three possible Dirichlet Fractional Laplacians …
We study global-in-time well-posedness and the behaviour and of the solution to Cauchy problem in the classical Keller-Segel system with logistic term \begin{equation*} \left. \aligned \partial_tn-Δn=&-χ\nabla\cdot(n\nabla c)+\la n-μn^2 τ\partial_tc-Δc=&-c+n \endaligned \right\}\quad\text{in}\,\,\,\RR^d\times\RR^+, \end{equation*} where $d\ge 1$, $τ,\, χ,\, μ>0$ and $λ\ge 0$. It's inspired by a previous result \cite[M. Winkler, Commun. Part. Diff. Eq., 35 (2010), 1516-1537]{Win10}, where the global-in-time boundedness of the above Keller-Segel system in smooth \emph{bounded }convex domains is …
We study the Cauchy problem of a $3\times 3$ system of conservation laws modeling two--phase flow of polymer flooding in rough porous media with possibly discontinuous permeability function. The system loses strict hyperbolicity in some regions of the domain where the eigenvalues of different families coincide, and BV estimates are not available in general. For a suitable $2\times 2$ system, a singular change of variable introduced by Temple could be effective to control the total variation. An extension of this technique can be applied to a $3\times 3$ system only under strict hypotheses on t…
We have obtained the explicit versions and precisions for the Hodge-Riemann decomposition of formes on affine algebraic curve V. The main application consists in the construction of Faddeev-Green function for Laplacian on V. Basing on this [HM](arXiv:0804.3951 and J.Geom.Anal., 2008,18), we extended from the case X in C to the case of bordered Riemann surface X in V the R.Novikov (1988) scheme for the effective reconstruction of conductivity function sigma on X through Dirichlet-to-Neumann mapping on bX for solutions of d(sigma d^cU)=0. In Sec.4 we give a correction of the paper [HM].
In this paper, we will discuss the use of a Sampling Method to reconstruct impenetrable inclusions from Electrostatic Cauchy data. We consider the case of a perfectly conducting and impedance inclusion. In either case, we show that the Dirichlet to Neumann mapping can be used to reconstruct impenetrable sub-regions via a sampling method. We also propose a non-iterative method based on boundary integral equations to reconstruct the impedance parameter using the reconstructed boundary of the inclusion from the knowledge of multiple Cauchy pairs which can be computed from Dirichlet to Neumann map…
In this paper we present time-dependent perturbations of second-order non-autonomous abstract Cauchy problems associated to a family of operators with constant domain. We make use of the equivalence to a first-order non-autonomous abstract Cauchy problem in a product space, which we elaborate in full detail. As an application we provide a perturbed non-autonomous wave equation.
We prove the existence and a new representation formula for the gradient of the semigroup associated to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck in a bounded convex domain in d dimensions.
The abstract elliptic and parabolic equations on exterior domain are considered. The equations have top-order variable coefficients. The separability properties of boundary value problems for elliptic equation and well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for parabolic equations are established. In application, the well-posedness of Wentzell-Robin type mixed probem for parabolic equation, Cauchy problem for anisotropic parabolic equations and system of parabolic equations are derived

We consider the asymptotic behavior of nonlinear nonlocal flows $u_t+(-\La)^{1/2}u=0$ to find the geometric property of the solutions in nonlinear eigenvalue problem: (-\La)^{1/2}\vp=λ\vp posed in a strictly convex domain $Ω\subset\R^n$ with $\vp>0$ in $Ω$ and $\vp=0$ on $\R^n\bsΩ$. This is corresponding to an eigenvalue problem for Cauchy process. The concavity of $\vp$ is well known for the dimension $n=1$. In this paper, we will show $\vp^{-\frac{2}{n+1}}$ is convex. Moreover, the eventual power-convexity of the parabolic flows is also proved. In the final section, We extend geometric resul…
