Cavity ring-down spectroscopy is a ubiquitous optical method used to study light-matter interactions with high resolution, sensitivity and accuracy. However, it has never been performed with the multiplexing advantages of direct frequency comb spectroscopy without sacrificing orders of magnitude of resolution. We present dual-comb cavity ring-down spectroscopy (DC-CRDS) based on the parallel heterodyne detection of ring-down signals with a local oscillator comb to yield absorption and dispersion spectra. These spectra are obtained from widths and positions of cavity modes. We present two approaches which leverage the dynamic cavity response to coherently or randomly driven changes in the amplitude or frequency of the probe field. Both techniques yield accurate spectra of methane - an important greenhouse gas and breath biomarker. The high sensitivity and accuracy of broadband DC-CRDS, shows promise for applications like studies of the structure and dynamics of large molecules, multispecies trace gas detection and isotopic composition.
We demonstrate broadband and sensitive cavity ring-down spectroscopy using a near infrared frequency comb and a time-resolved Fourier transform spectrometer. The cavity decays are measured simultaneously and spectrally sorted, leading to purely exponential decays for each spectral element. The absorption spectra of atmospheric water and carbon dioxide are retrieved and demonstrate the high frequency resolution and absorption precision of the technique. The experimental apparatus, the measurement concept and the data treatment are described. The technique benefits from the advantages of cavity …
We present a new cavity-based polarimetric scheme for highly sensitive and time-resolved measurements of birefringence and dichroism, linear and circular, that employs rapidly-pulsed single-frequency CW laser sources and extends current cavity-based spectropolarimetric techniques. We demonstrate how the use of a CW laser source allows for gains in spectral resolution, signal intensity and data acquisition rate compared to traditional pulsed-based cavity ring-down polarimetry (CRDP). We discuss a particular CW-CRDP modality that is different from intensity-based cavity-enhanced polarimetric sch…

We report Doppler-free two-photon absorption of N$_2$O at $λ$ = 4.53 $μ$m, measured by cavity ring-down spectroscopy. High power was achieved by optical self-locking of a quantum cascade laser to a linear resonator of finesse $F$ = 22730, and accurate laser detuning over a 400 MHz range was measured relative to an optical frequency comb. At a sample pressure of p = 0.13 kPa, we report a large two-photon cross-section of $σ_{13}^{(2)}$ = 8.0 $\times$ 10$^{-41}$ cm$^4$ s molecule$^{-1}$ for the $Q$(18) rovibrational transition at a resonant frequency of $ν_0$ = 66179400.8 MHz.
Microresonators (MRs) are key components in integrated optics. As a result, the estimation of their energy storage capacity as measured by the quality factor (Q) is crucial. However, in MR with high/ultra-high Q, the surface-wall roughness dominates the intrinsic Q and generates a coupling between counter-propagating modes. This splits the usual sharp single resonance and makes difficult the use of classical methods to assess Q. Here, we theoretically show that an interferometric excitation can be exploited in a Cavity Ring-Down (CRD) method to measure the ultimate Q of a MR. In fact, under su…
It is shown that a broad class of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) problems - which consider the resonant propagation of a single photon interacting with quantum emitters (QEs), such as atoms, quantum dots, or vacancy centers - can be solved directly without application of the second quantization formalism. In the developed approach, the Hamiltonian is expressed through the ket-bra products of collective (photon + cavities + QEs) states. Consequently, the S-matrix of input-output problems is determined exactly by the Mahaux-Weidenmüller formula, which dramatically simplifies the analysis o…
Liquid phase sensing applications at 1550~nm are highly desirable due to widely available off-the-shelf components. Generally, liquids at 1550~nm induce a high absorption loss that limits the overall sensor's sensitivity and detection limit. One solution is to use an active fiber loop in conjunction with cavity ring down spectroscopy to overcome these absorption losses. However, the amplifier inside the fiber loop suffers from inherent gain fluctuations that limit the sensing system's overall performance. Here, we provide a novel sensor using the wavelength-scanned phase shift-cavity ring down…
We present a cryogenic setup where an optical Fabry-Perot resonator is coupled to a single-mode optical fiber with coupling efficiency above 90% at mK temperatures without realignment during cooling down. The setup is prealigned at room temperature to compensate for the thermal contraction and change of the refractive index of the optical components during cooling down. The high coupling efficiency is achieved by keeping the setup rotation-symmetric around the optical axis. The majority of the setup components are made of Invar (FeNi36) which minimizes the thermal contraction. High coupling ef…
We describe the cavity-enhancement of frequency combs over a wide tuning range of 450-700 nm (> 7900 cm$^{-1}$), covering nearly the entire visible spectrum. Tunable visible frequency combs from a synchronously-pumped optical parametric oscillator are coupled into a 4-mirror, dispersion-managed cavity with a finesse of 600 to 1400. An intracavity absorption path length enhancement greater than 190 is obtained over the entire tuning range, while preserving intracavity spectral bandwidths capable of supporting sub-200 fs pulse durations. These tunable cavity-enhanced frequency combs can find man…
We study a periodically driven qubit coupled to a quantized cavity mode. Despite its apparent simplicity, this system supports a rich variety of exotic phenomena, such as topological frequency conversion as recently discovered in [Martin et al, PRX 7, 041008 (2017)]. Here we report on a qualitatively different phenomenon that occurs in this platform, where the cavity mode's oscillations lock their frequency to a rational fraction $r/q$ of the driving frequency $Ω$. This phenomenon, which we term quantum frequency locking, is characterized by the emergence of $q$-tuplets of stationary (Floquet)…
Electro-optic frequency combs were employed to rapidly interrogate an optomechanical sensor, demonstrating spectral resolution substantially exceeding that possible with a mode-locked frequency comb. Frequency combs were generated using an integrated-circuit-based direct digital synthesizer and utilized in a self-heterodyne configuration. Unlike approaches based upon laser locking or sweeping, the present approach allows rapid, parallel measurements of full optical cavity modes, large dynamic range of sensor displacement, and acquisition across a wide frequency range between DC and 500 kHz. In…
We proposed a refractive index (RI) sensing method with temperature compensation by using an optical frequency comb (OFC) sensing cavity employing a multimode-interference (MMI) fiber, namely, the MMI-OFC sensing cavity. The MMI-OFC sensing cavity enables simultaneous measurement of material-dependent RI and sample temperature by decoding from the comb spacing frequency shift and the wavelength shift of the OFC. We realized the simultaneous and continuous measurement of RI-related concentration of a liquid sample and its temperature with precisions of 1.6*10^-4 RIU and 0.08 degree. The propose…
Ultracompact nonlinear optical devices utilizing two-dimensional (2D) materials and nanostructures are emerging as important elements of photonic circuits. Integration of the nonlinear material into a subwavelength cavity or waveguide leads to a strong Purcell enhancement of the nonlinear processes and compensates for a small interaction volume. The generic feature of such devices which makes them especially challenging for analysis is strong dissipation of both the nonlinear polarization and highly confined modes of a subwavelength cavity. Here we solve a quantum-electrodynamic problem of the…

High-resolution spectra of two gravimetric mixtures of CH$_3$OH-in-air with nominal mole fractions of 202.2 $μ$mol/mol and 45.89 $μ$mol/mol, respectively, were recorded at pressures between 0.8 kPa and 102 kPa and at a temperature of 298 K. Covering the experimental wavenumber range of 4990 cm$^{-1}$ to 5010 cm$^{-1}$ in increments of 0.0067 cm$^{-1}$ and with an instrument linewidth of 30 kHz…
Quantitative modeling of complex molecular response in coherent cavity-enhanced dual-comb spectroscopy
Mode-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is an emerging spectroscopic tool with the potential to simultaneously achieve a broad spectral coverage and ultrahigh spectral resolution in terahertz (THz) spectroscopy. However, the need for two independently stabilized ultrafast lasers significantly hampers the potential application of DCS techniques. In this article, we demonstrate mode-resolved DCS in the THz region based on a free-running single-cavity dual-comb fiber laser with adaptive sampling. Low-pressure spectroscopy of acetonitrile gas with absorption features approaching the Doppler lim…
Cavity optomechanics has become a powerful tool to manipulate mechanical motion via optical fields. When driving an optomechanical cavity with blue-detuned laser the mechanical motion is amplified, ultimately resulting in phonon lasing. In this work, we show that a silicon optomechanical crystal cavity can be used as an optoelectronic oscillator when driven to the phonon lasing condition. To this end, we use an optomechanical cavity designed to have a breathing-like mechanical mode vibrating at $Ω_{m}/2π=$3.897 GHz in a full phononic bandgap. Our measurements show that the first harmonic displ…
Temporal cavity solitons in ring microresonators provide broad and controllable generation of frequency combs with applications in frequency standards and precise atomic clocks. Three level media in the Λ configuration inside microresonators displaying electromagnetically induced transparency can be used for the generation of temporal cavity solitons and frequency combs in the presence of anomalous dispersion and two external driving fields close to resonance. Here, domain walls separating regions of two dark states due to quantum interference correspond to realizations of stimulated Raman adi…
We demonstrate dual-comb generation from an all-polarization-maintaining dual-color ytterbium (Yb) fiber laser. Two pulse trains with center wavelengths at 1030 nm and 1060 nm respectively are generated within the same laser cavity with a repetition rate around 77 MHz. Dual-color operation is induced using a tunable mechanical spectral filter, which cuts the gain spectrum into two spectral regions that can be independently mode-locked. Spectral overlap of the two pulse trains is achieved outside the laser cavity by amplifying the 1030-nm pulses and broadening them in a nonlinear fiber. Spatial…
We study the effect of degenerate parametric down-conversion (DPDC) in an ensemble of two-level quantum emitters (QEs) coupled via near-field interactions to a single surface plasmon (SP) mode of a nonlinear plasmonic cavity. For this purpose, we develop a quantum driven-dissipative model capturing non-equilibrium dynamics of the system in which incoherently pumped QEs have transition frequency tuned near the second-harmonic response of the SPs. Considering the strong coupling regime, i.e., the SP-QE interaction rate exceeds system dissipation rates, we find a critical SP-QE coupling attribute…
Chi-3 micro resonators have enabled compact and portable frequency comb generation, but require sophisticated dispersion control. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach using a chi-2 sheet cavity, where the dispersion requirement is relaxed by cavity phase matching. 21.2 THz broadband comb generation is achieved with uniform line spacing of 133.0 GHz, despite a relatively large dispersion of 275.4 fs^2/mm around 1064nm. With 22.6 % high slope efficiency and 14.9 kW peak power handling, this chi-2 comb can be further stabilized for navigation, telecommunication, astronomy, and spectroscopy…
Single-cavity dual-comb lasers are a new class of ultrafast lasers which have a wide possible application space including pump-probe sampling, optical ranging, and gas absorption spectroscopy. However, to this date laser cavity multiplexing usually came to the trade-off in laser performance or relative timing noise suppression. We present a new method for multiplexing a single laser cavity to support a pair of noise-correlated modes. These modes share all intracavity components and take a near-common path, but do not overlap on any active elements. We implement the method with an 80-MHz laser …
The field of micro-cavity based frequency combs, or 'micro-combs'[1,2], has recently witnessed many fundamental breakthroughs[3-19] enabled by the discovery of temporal cavity-solitons, self-localised waves sustained by a background of radiation usually containing 95% of the total power[20]. Simple methods for their efficient generation and control are currently researched to finally establish micro-combs as out-of-the-lab widespread tools[21]. Here we demonstrate micro-comb laser cavity-solitons, an intrinsically highly-efficient, background free class of solitary waves. Laser cavity-solitons…

Also, the polarization dynamics of a dual-frequency comb generated from a single mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser are experimentally studied. The obtained results will extend the application to areas such as polarization spectroscopy and dual-comb-based polarimetry.
