We study the cohomology of the free loop space of $SU(n+1)/T^n$, the simplest example of a complete flag manifolds and an important homogeneous space. Through this enhanced analysis we reveal rich new combinatorial structures arising in the cohomology algebra of the free loop spaces. We build new theory to allow for the computation of $H^*(Λ(SU(n+1)/T^{n});\mathbb{Z})$, a significantly more complicated structure than other known examples. In addition to our theoretical results, we explicitly implement a novel integral Gröbner basis procedure for computation. This procedure is applicable to any Leray-Serre spectral sequence for which the cohomology of the base space is the quotient of a finitely generated polynomial algebra. The power of this procedure is illustrated by the explicit calculation of $H^*( Λ(SU(4)/T^3);\mathbb{Z})$. We also provide a python library with examples of all procedures used in the paper.
Given a simply connected space $X$ with the cohomology $H^*(X;{\mathbb Z}_2)$ to be polynomial, we calculate the loop cohomology algebra $H^*(ΩX;{\mathbb Z}_2)$ by means of the action of the Steenrod cohomology operation $Sq_1$ on $H^*(X;{\mathbb Z}_2).$ As a consequence we obtain that $H^*(ΩX;{\mathbb Z}_2)$ is the exterior algebra if and only if $Sq_1$ is multiplicatively decomposable on $H^{\ast}(X;{\mathbb Z}_2).$ The last statement in fact contains a converse of a theorem of A. Borel.
This note explores the interaction between cohomology operations in a generalized cohomology theory and a string topology loop coproduct dual to the Chas--Sullivan loop product. More precisely, we ask for a description for the failure of a given operation to commute with the loop coproduct, and will obtain a satisfactory answer in the case where the operation preserves both sums and products. Examples of such operations include the total Steenrod square in ordinary mod 2 cohomology and the Adams operations in K-theory.
We construct E-infinity cell algebra models for the cochain algebras of the free and based loop spaces on a simply-connected topological space. Techniques from rational homotopy theory are exploited throughout.
We construct a complex analytic version of an equivariant cohomology theory which appeared in a recent paper of Rezk, and which is roughly modeled on the Borel-equivariant cohomology of the double free loop space. The construction is defined on finite, torus-equivariant CW complexes and takes values in coherent holomorphic sheaves over the moduli stack of complex elliptic curves. Our methods involve an inverse limit construction over all finite dimensional subcomplexes of the double free loop space, following an analogous construction of Kitchloo for single free loop spaces. We show that, for …
Let X be a simply connected space and k a commutative ring. Goodwillie, Burghelea and Fiedorowiscz proved that the Hochschild cohomology of the singular chains on the pointed loop space HH^{*}S_*(ΩX) is isomorphic to the free loop space cohomology H^{*}(X^{S^{1}}). We proved that this isomorphism is compatible with both the cup product on HH^{*}S_*(ΩX) and on H^{*}(X^{S^{1}}). In particular, we explicit the algebra H^{*}(X^{S^{1}}) when X is a suspended space, a complex projective space or a finite CW-complex of dimension p such that \frac {1}{(p-1)!}\in k.
We apply the Transfer Algorithm introduced in arXiv:1106.5090 to transfer an A_\infty-algebra structure that cannot be computed using the classical Basic Perturbation Lemma. We construct a space X whose (base pointed) loop cohomology H = H^*(ΩX; Z_2) comes equipped with a nontrivial operation ω: H x H --> H x H.
For n>2, we prove the mod 2 cohomology of the finite Chevalley group Spin_n(F_q) is isomorphic to that of the classifying space of the loop group of the spin group Spin(n).
A complete flag manifold is the quotient of a Lie group by its maximal torus. The rank of a flag manifold is the dimension of the maximal torus of the Lie group. The rank 2 complete flag manifolds are $SU(3)/T^2$, $Sp(2)/T^2$, $Spin(4)/T^2$, $Spin(5)/T^2$ and $G_2/T^2$. In this paper we calculate the cohomology of the free loop space of rank 2 complete flag manifolds.
In this paper we identify conditions under which the cohomology $H^*(ΩMξ;\k)$ for the loop space $ΩMξ$ of the Thom space $Mξ$ of a spherical fibration $ξ\downarrow B$ can be a polynomial ring. We use the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence which has a particularly simple form when the Euler class $e(ξ)\in H^n(B;\k)$ vanishes, or equivalently when an orientation class for the Thom space has trivial square. As a consequence of our homological calculations we are able to show that the suspension spectrum $Σ^\inftyΩMξ$ has a local splitting replacing the James splitting of $ΣΩMξ$ when $Mξ$ is a susp…
We study natural subalgebras Ch_E(G) of group cohomology defined in terms of infinite loop spaces E and give representation theoretic descriptions of those based on QS^0 and the Johnson-Wilson theories E(n). We describe the subalgebras arising from the Brown-Peterson spectra BP and as a result give a simple reproof of Yagita's theorem that the image of BP^*(BG) in H^*(BG;F_p) is F-isomorphic to the whole cohomology ring; the same result is shown to hold with BP replaced by any complex oriented theory E with a map of ring spectra from E to HF_p which is non-trivial in homotopy. We also extend t…
We study the mod-2 cohomology spectral sequence arising from delooping the Bousfield-Kan cosimplicial space giving the 2-nilpotent completion of a connective spectrum $X$. Under good conditions its $E_{2}$-term is computable as certain non-abelian derived functors evaluated at $H^*(X)$ as a module over the Steenrod algebra, and it converges to the cohomology of $Ω^\infty X$. We provide general methods for computing the $E_{2}$-term, including the construction of a multiplicative spectral sequence of Serre type for cofibration sequences of simplicial commutative algebras. Some simple examples a…
`Loop-fusion cohomology' is defined on the continuous loop space of a manifold in terms of \vCech cochains satisfying two multiplicative conditions with respect to the fusion and figure-of-eight products on loops. The main result is that these cohomology groups, with coefficients in an abelian group, are isomorphic to those of the manifold and the transgression homomorphism factors through the isomorphism.
We show that Lupercio-Uribe-Xicoténcatl's orbifold loop product and coproduct can be described by a group cohomology class in some cases. By computing this cohomology class, we show that in some cases the orbifold loop product is trivial.
The class of loop spaces whose mod p cohomology is Noetherian is much larger than the class of p-compact groups (for which the mod p cohomology is required to be finite). It contains Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces such as the infinite complex projective space and 3-connected covers of compact Lie groups. We study the cohomology of the classifying space BX of such an object and prove it is as small as expected, that is, comparable to that of BCP^\infty. We also show that BX differs basically from the classifying space of a p-compact group in a single homotopy group. This applies in particular to 4-c…
We show that for topological groups and loop contractible coefficients the cohomology groups of continuous group cochains and of group cochains that are continuous on some identity neighbourhood are isomorphic. Moreover, we show a similar statement for compactly generated groups and Lie groups holds and apply our results to different concepts of group cohomology for finite-dimensional Lie groups.
The free loops space $ΛX$ of a space $X$ has become an important object of study particularly in the case when $X$ is a manifold. The study of free loop spaces is motivated in particular by two main examples. The first is their relation to geometrically distinct periodic geodesics on a manifold, originally studied by Gromoll and Meyer in $1969$. More recently the study of string topology and in particular the Chas-Sullivan loop product has been an active area of research. A complete flag manifold is the quotient of a Lie group by its maximal torus and is one of the nicer examples of a homogeneo…
Let $Λ(\mathbb{C}P^n)$ denote the free loop space of the complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P^n$, i. e. $\mathbb{C}P^n$ is the projective space of the vector space $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ of dimension $n+1$ over the complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$ and $Λ(\mathbb{C}P^n)$ is the function space $\mathrm{map}(S^1,\mathbb{C}P^n)$ of unbased maps from a circle $S^1$ into $\mathbb{C}P^n$ topologized with the compact open topology. In this note we show that despite the fact that the natural fibration $Ω(\mathbb{C}P^n)\hookrightarrow Λ(\mathbb{C}P^n)\stackrel{eval}{\longrightarrow}\mathbb{C}P^n$ has a cross s…
Let p, ell be distinct primes and let q be a power of p. Let G be a connected compact Lie group. We show that there exists an integer b such that the mod ell cohomology of the classifying space of a finite Chevalley group G(F_q) is isomorphic to the mod ell cohomology of the classifying space of the loop group LG for q=p^{ab}, a>0.
Let PSigma_n denote the group that can be thought of either as the group of motions of the trivial n-component link or the group of symmetric automorphisms of a free group of rank n. The integral cohomology ring of PSigma_n is determined, establishing a conjecture of Brownstein and Lee.
In 1994, Grojnowski gave a construction of an equivariant elliptic cohomology theory associated to an elliptic curve over the complex numbers. Grojnowski's construction has seen numerous applications in algebraic topology and geometric representation theory, however the construction is somewhat ad hoc and there has been significant interest in the question of its geometric interpretation. We show that there are two global models for Grojnowski's theory, which shed light on its geometric meaning. The first model is constructed as the Borel-equivariant cohomology of a double free loop space, and…
The goal of this article is to make explicit a structured complex whose homology computes the cohomology of the p-profinite completion of the n-fold loop space of a sphere of dimension d=n-m<n. This complex is defined purely algebraically, in terms of characteristic structures of E_n-operads. Our construction involves: the free complete algebra in one variable associated to any E_n-operad; and an element in this free complete algebra, which is associated to a morphism from the operad of L-infinity algebras to an operadic suspension of our E_n-operad. We deduce our main theorem from: a connecti…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of free involutions on some Wall manifolds and we compute the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the correspondent orbit space.
Let $e: N^n \rightarrow M^m $ be an embedding into a compact manifold $M$. We study the relationship between the homology of the free loop space $LM$ on $M$ and of the space $L_NM$ of loops of $M$ based in $N$ and define a shriek map $ e_{!}: H_*( LM, \mathbb{Q}) \rightarrow H_*( L_NM, \mathbb{Q})$ using Hochschild cohomology and study its properties. We also extend a result of Félix on the injectivity of the induced map $ \mathrm{aut}_1M \rightarrow \mathrm{map}(N, M; f ) $ on rational homotopy groups when $M$ and $N$ have the same dimension and $ f: N\rightarrow M $ is a map of non zero degr…
Let X be a finitistic space with non-trivial cohomology groups H^in(X;Z)=Z with generators v_i, where i = 0, 1, 2, 3. We say that X has cohomology type (a, b) if v_1^2 = av_2 and v_1v_2 = bv_3 . In this note, we determine the mod 2 cohomology ring of the orbit space X/G of a free action of G = Z_2 on X, where both a and b are even. In this case, we observed that there is no equivariant map S^m --> X for m > 3n, where S^m has the antipodal action. Moreover, it is shown that G can not act freely on space X which is of cohomology type (a, b) where a is odd and b is even. We also obtain the mod 2 …
This paper gives the cohomology classification of finitistic spaces X equipped with free actions of the group G = S3 and the orbit space X/G is the integral or mod 2 cohomology quaternion projective space HPn. We have proved that X is the integral or mod 2 cohomology (4n+3)-sphere or the product of 3-sphere and quaternion projective space HPn. Similar results for G = S1 actions are also discussed.
A gauge group is the topological group of automorphisms of a principal bundle. We compute the integral cohomology ring of the classifying spaces of gauge groups of principal U(n)-bundles over the 2-sphere by generalizing the operation for free loop spaces, called the free double suspension.
Let $G = \ZZ_p$, $p$ an odd prime, act freely on a finite-dimensional CW-complex $X$ with mod $p$ cohomology isomorphic to that of a lens space $L^{2m-1} (p;q_1,...,q_m)$. In this paper, we determine the mod $p$ cohomology ring of the orbit space $X/G$, when $p^2\nmid m$.
In this paper we give a method to construct moment-angle manifolds whose cohomologies are not torsion free. We also give method to describe the corresponding simplicial sphere by its non-faces.
Let $X$ be a simply connected space and $\Bbb K$ be any field. The normalized singular cochains $N^*(X; {\Bbb K})$ admit a natural strongly homotopy commutative algebra structure, which induces a natural product on the Hochschild homology $HH_* N^*X$ of the space $X$. We prove that, endowed with this product, $HH_*N^*X$ is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of the free loop space of $X$ with coefficients in $\Bbb K$. We also show how to construct a simpler Hochschild complex which allows direct computation.
In this paper we construct twisted Real quasi-elliptic cohomology as the twisted KR-theory of loop groupoids. The theory systematically incorporates loop rotation and reflection. After establishing basic properties of the theory, we construct twisted elliptic Pontryagin characters and, without twists, Real analogues of the string power operation of quasi-elliptic cohomology. We also explore the relation of the theory to the Tate curve.
Let G be a compact, connected and simply connected Lie group, and ΩG the space of the loops in G based at the identity. This note shows a way to compute the cohomology of the total space of a principal ΩG-bundle over a manifold M, from the cohomology of G, the differential forms on M and the characteristic classes of the bundle. The equivariant situation is also treated.
We study the classifying space of a twisted loop group $L_σG$ where $G$ is a compact Lie group and $σ$ is an automorphism of $G$ of finite order modulo inner automorphisms. Equivalently, we study the $σ$-twisted adjoint action of $G$ on itself. We derive a formula for the cohomology ring $H^*(BL_σG)$ and explicitly carry out the calculation for all automorphisms of simple Lie groups. More generally, we derive a formula for the equivariant cohomology of compact Lie group actions with constant rank stabilizers.
For M a closed, connected, oriented manifold, we obtain the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra of its string topology through homotopy-theoretic constructions on its based loop space. In particular, we show that the Hochschild cohomology of the chain algebra C_*ΩM carries a BV algebra structure isomorphic to that of the loop homology $\mathbb{H}_*(LM)$. Furthermore, this BV algebra structure is compatible with the usual cup product and Gerstenhaber bracket on Hochschild cohomology. To produce this isomorphism, we use a derived form of Poincaré duality with C_*ΩM-modules as local coefficient syste…
We compute the Brown-Peterson cohomology of QX, the free infinite loop-space on X, when X is a space whose Morava K-theory is flat over its BP-cohomology, in particular a space whose Morava K-theory is concentrated in even degrees. Our computation is in terms of a destabilization functor for BP-cohomology. We also show that for such X, the Morava K-homology of QX is a free commutative algebra.
Let X be a space and write LX for its free loop space equipped with the action of the circle group T given by dilation. We compute the equivariant cohomology H^*(LX_hT; Z/p) as a module over H^*(BT; Z/p) when X=CP^r for any positive integer r and any prime number p. The computation implies that the associated mod p Serre spectral sequence collapses from the E_3-page.
Let X be a 1-connected compact space such that the algebra H*(X;Z/2) is generated by one single element. We compute the cohomology of the free loop space H*(LX;Z/2) including the Steenrod algebra action. When X is a projective space CP^n, HP^n, the Cayley projective plane CaP^2 or a sphere S^m we obtain a splitting result for integral and mod two cohomology of the suspension spectrum of LX_+. The splitting is in terms of the suspension spectrum of X_+ and the Thom spaces of the q-fold Whitney sums of the tangent bundle over X for non negative integers q.
Let $G$ be a group acting continuously on a space $X$ and let $X/G$ be its orbit space. Determining the topological or cohomological type of the orbit space $X/G$ is a classical problem in the theory of transformation groups. In this paper, we consider this problem for cohomology lens spaces. Let $X$ be a finitistic space having the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the lens space $L_p^{2m-1}(q_1,...,q_m)$. Then we classify completely the possible mod 2 cohomology algebra of orbit spaces of arbitrary free involutions on $X$. We also give examples of spaces realizing the possible cohomology algebras.…
We study a certain construction designed to bring together the following two topics: $i$) Dyer--Lashof-operations in negative Tate-cohomology, $ii$) the description of negative Tate-cohomology in terms of joins. It has the merit of making (some) sense in a more general context: where the loop-space of the space under study no longer has to be of compact homotopy-type. The exposition given here is a streamlined version of a previous version of mine, available here at the Arxiv.
Quasi-elliptic cohomology is a variant of Tate K-theory. It is the orbifold K-theory of a space of constant loops. For global quotient orbifolds, it can be expressed in terms of equivariant K-theories. In this paper we show how this theory is equipped with power operations. We also prove that the Tate K-theory of symmetric groups modulo a certain transfer ideal classify the finite subgroups of the Tate curve.
Suppose that G=S^1 acts freely on a finitistic space X whose mod p cohomology ring isomorphic to that of a lens space L^{2m-1}(p;q_1,...,q_m). In this paper, we determine the mod p cohomology ring of the orbit space X/G. If the characteristic class α\belongs H^2(X/G;Z_p) of the S^1-bundle S--> X--> X/G is nonzero, then mod p ndex of the action is deined to be the largest integer n such that α^n is nonzero. We also show that the mod p index of a free action of S^1 on a lens space L^(2m-1)(p;q_1,...,q_m) is p-1, provided that αis nonzero.
Chas and Sullivan showed that the homology of the free loop space LM of an oriented closed smooth finite dimensional manifold M admits the structure of a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra equipped with an associative product called the loop product and a Lie bracket called the loop bracket. We show that the cap product is compatible with the above two products in the loop homology. Namely, the cap product with cohomology classes coming from M via the circle action acts as derivations on loop products as well as on loop brackets. We show that Poisson identities and Jacobi identities hold for the …
Quasi-elliptic cohomology is a variant of elliptic cohomology theories. It is the orbifold K-theory of a space of constant loops. For global quotient orbifolds, it can be expressed in terms of equivariant K-theories. Thus, the constructions on it can be made in a neat way. This theory reflects the geometric nature of the Tate curve. In this paper we provide a systematic introduction of its construction and definition.
Let G be a finite group acting freely on a finitistic space X having cohomology type (0, b) (for example, S^n x S^{2n} is a space of type (0, 1) and the one-point union S^n V S^{2n} V S^{3n} is a space of type (0, 0)). It is known that a finite group G which contains Zp + Zp + Zp, p a prime, can not act freely on S^n x S^{2n}. In this paper, we show that if a finite group G acts freely on a space of type (0, 1), where n is odd, then G can not contain Zp + Zp, p an odd prime. For spaces of cohomology type (0, 0), we show that every p-subgroup of G is either cyclic or a generalized quaternion gr…
Let $G$ be a connected Lie group of rank one. In this paper the existence of free actions of group $G$ on spheres, real projective spaces and lens spaces has been studied. Most of the results have been obtained for finitistic spaces with cohomology ring isomorphic to the cohomology ring of these spaces. The cohomology algebra of the orbit space has been determined in the case of free $G$-action. The non-existence of $G$-equivariant maps from spheres to cohomology spheres has also been established.
For finite dimensional free $C_p$-spaces, the calculation of the Bredon cohomology ring as an algebra over the cohomology of $S^0$ is used to prove the non-existence of certain $C_p$-maps. These are related to Borsuk-Ulam type theorems, and equivariant maps related to the topological Tverberg conjecture. For certain finite dimensional $C_p$-spaces which are formed out of representations, it is proved that the cohomology is a free module over the cohomology of a point. All the calculations are done for the cohomology with constant coefficients $\mathbb{Z}/p$.
Let X be a 1-connected space with free loop space LX. We introduce two spectral sequences converging towards H^*(LX;Z/p) and H^*((LX)_hT;Z/p). The E2-terms are certain non Abelian derived functors applied to H^*(X;Z/p). When H^*(X;Z/p) is a polynomial algebra, the spectral sequences collapse for more or less trivial reasons. If X is a sphere it is a surprising fact that the spectral sequences collapse for p=2.
We consider closed manifolds, which occur as intersections of products of spheres of the same dimension with certain hyperplanes. Among those are the so called (big) polygon- and chain spaces. The equivariant cohomology with respect to natural actions of 2-tori is calculated and related to the notion of syzygy. It turns out that the equivariant cohomology module of these manifolds is often torsion free, but not free over the cohomology of the group. Coefficients are taken in the field with two elements.
We determine the mod $2$ cohomology over the Steenrod algebra of the classifying spaces of the free loop groups $LG$ for compact groups $G=Spin(7)$, $Spin(8)$, $Spin(9)$, and $F_4$. Then, we show that they are isomorphic as algebras over the Steenrod algebra to the mod $2$ cohomology of the corresponding Chevalley groups of type $G(q)$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. In a similar manner, we compute the cohomology of the free loop space over $BDI(4)$ and show that it is isomorphic to that of $BSol(q)$ as algebras over the Steenrod algebra.
A spectral sequence for the computation of the Hochschild cohomology of a coconnective dga over a field is presented. This spectral sequence has a similar flavour to the spectral sequence constructed by Cohen, Jones and Yan for the computation of the loop homology of a closed orientable manifold. Using this spectral sequence we identify a class of spaces for which the Hochschild cohomology of their mod-p cochain algebra is Noetherian. This implies, among other things, that for such a space the derived category of mod-p chains on its loop-space carries a theory of support varieties.
Given a simple, simply connected compact Lie group G, let M be a G-space. We describe the quantization of the category of positive energy representations of the loop group of G at a given level and parametrized over the loop space LM. This procedure is described in terms of dominant K-theory of the loop group evaluated on the phase space given by the tangent bundle of basic gauge fields about a circle (parametrized over LM and with gauge symmetries given by the loop group LG). As such, our construction gives rise to a (categorical) BV-BRST type quantization for families of rational 2d CFTs wit…
We construct a connected finite loop space of rank 66 and dimension 1254 whose rational cohomology is not isomorphic as a graded vector space to the rational cohomology of any compact Lie group, hence providing a counterexample to a classical conjecture. Aided by machine calculation we verify that our counterexample is minimal, i.e., that any finite loop space of rank less than 66 is in fact rationally equivalent to a compact Lie group, extending the classical known bound of 5.
An almost-direct product of free groups is an iterated semidirect product of finitely generated free groups in which the action of the constituent free groups on the homology of one another is trivial. We determine the structure of the cohomology ring of such a group. This is used to analyze the topological complexity of the associated Eilenberg-Mac Lane space.
