Let X be a 1-connected compact space such that the algebra H*(X;Z/2) is generated by one single element. We compute the cohomology of the free loop space H*(LX;Z/2) including the Steenrod algebra action. When X is a projective space CP^n, HP^n, the Cayley projective plane CaP^2 or a sphere S^m we obtain a splitting result for integral and mod two cohomology of the suspension spectrum of LX_+. The splitting is in terms of the suspension spectrum of X_+ and the Thom spaces of the q-fold Whitney sums of the tangent bundle over X for non negative integers q.
We study a spectral sequence that computes the (mod 2) S^1-equivariant homology of the free loop space LM of a manifold M (the "string homology" of M). Using it and knowledge of the string topology operations on the homology of LM, we compute the string homology of M when M is a sphere or a projective space.
Let $G=\mathbb{Z}_2$ act on a finite CW-complex $X$ having mod 2 cohomology isomorphic to the product of projective space and sphere $\mathbb{F}P^n\times \mathbb{S}^m,$ where $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}.$ In this paper, we have determined the connected fixed point sets and the orbit spaces of free involutions on $X.$ As an application, we derive the Borsuk-Ulam type results.
We calculate the rational homotopy and the K(1)-local homotopy of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and level 2. We use this to verify the chromatic splitting conjecture in this case.
For maps from $S^3$ and $\RP^3$ into $S^2$ and $\RP^2$, we study the problem of minimizing the root set by deforming the maps through homotopies. After presenting the classification of the homotopy classes of such maps, we prove that the minimal root set for a non null-homotopic map is either a circle or the disjoint union of two circle, according its range is $S^2$ or $\RP^2$, respectively.
We introduce the digital projective product spaces based on Davis' projective product spaces. We determine an upper bound for the digital LS-category of the digital projective product spaces. In addition, we obtain an upper bound for the digital topological complexity of these spaces. We prove the relation between the digital topological complexity of the digital projective product spaces and sum of the digital topological complexity of the digital projective space by associating with the first digital sphere and the digital topological complexity of the remaining digital spheres through an ex…
Chas and Sullivan recently defined an intersection product on the homology $H_*(LM)$ of the space of smooth loops in a closed, oriented manifold $M$. In this paper we will use the homotopy theoretic realization of this product described by the first two authors to construct a second quadrant spectral sequence of algebras converging to the loop homology multiplicatively, when $M$ is simply connected. The $E_2$ term of this spectral sequence is $H^*(M;H_*(ΩM))$ where the product is given by the cup product on the cohomology of the manifold $H^* (M)$ with coefficients in the Pontryagin ring struc…
We develop the theory of arrangements of spheres. Consider a finite collection of codimension-$1$ subspheres in a positive-dimensional sphere. There are two posets associated with this collection: the poset of faces and the poset of intersections. We also associate a topological space: the complement of the union of tangent bundles of these subspheres in the tangent bundle of the ambient sphere. We call this space the tangent bundle complement. As in the case of hyperplane arrangements the aim of this new notion is to understand the interaction between the combinatorics of the intersections an…
We calculate the homotopy type of $L_1L_{K(2)}S^0$ and $L_{K(1)}L_{K(2)}S^0$ at the prime 2, where $L_{K(n)}$ is localization with respect to Morava $K$-theory and $L_1$ localization with respect to $2$-local $K$ theory. In $L_1L_{K(2)}S^0$ we find all the summands predicted by the Chromatic Splitting Conjecture, but we find some extra summands as well. An essential ingredient in our approach is the analysis of the continuous group cohomology $H^\ast_c(\mathbb{G}_2,E_0)$ where $\mathbb{G}_2$ is the Morava stabilizer group and $E_0 = \mathbb{W}[[u_1]]$ is the ring of functions on the height $2$…
We prove the non-existence of special generic maps on complex projective space as our extended new result. Simplest special generic maps are Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres, or Morse functions in Reeb's theorem, and canonical projections of unit spheres. Manifolds represented as connected sums of products of manifolds diffeomorphic to unit spheres admit such maps in considerable cases. Real and complex projective spaces have been shown to admit no such maps in most cases by the author. This gives a complete answer for complex projective spaces as a corollary to a mo…
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex quasi-projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. The mixed Hodge structures can thus be recovered from the Gysin spectral sequence of cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, th…
We provide a complete characterization of the equivariant commutative ring structures of all the factors in the idempotent splitting of the G-equivariant sphere spectrum, including their Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms, where G is any finite group. Our results describe explicitly how these structures depend on the subgroup lattice and conjugation in G. Algebraically, our analysis characterizes the multiplicative transfers on the localization of the Burnside ring of G at any idempotent element, which is of independent interest to group theorists. As an application, we obtain an explicit description …
Given a genus-g Heegaard splitting of a 3-sphere, the genus-g Goeritz group is defined to be the group of the isotopy classes of orientation preserving homeomorphism of the 3-sphere that preserve the splitting. In this paper, we determine the twisted first (co)homology group of the genus-2 Goeritz group of 3-sphere.
This paper gives the cohomology classification of finitistic spaces X equipped with free actions of the group G = S3 and the orbit space X/G is the integral or mod 2 cohomology quaternion projective space HPn. We have proved that X is the integral or mod 2 cohomology (4n+3)-sphere or the product of 3-sphere and quaternion projective space HPn. Similar results for G = S1 actions are also discussed.
By analogy with algebraic geometry, we define a category of non-linear sheaves (quasi-coherent homotopy-sheaves of topological spaces) on projective toric varieties and prove a splitting result for its algebraic K-theory, generalising earlier results for projective spaces. The splitting is expressed in terms of the number of interior lattice points of dilations of a polytope associated to the variety. The proof uses combinatorial and geometrical results on polytopal complexes. The same methods also give an elementary explicit calculation of the cohomology groups of a projective toric variety o…
In his Inventiones paper, Ziller (Invent. Math: 1-22, 1977) computed the integral homology as a graded abelian group of the free loop space of compact, globally symmetric spaces of rank 1. Chas and Sullivan (String Topology, 1999)showed that the homology of the free loop space of a compact closed orientable manifold can be equipped with a loop product and a BV-operator making it a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) developed a spectral sequence which converges to the loop homology as a spectral sequence of algebra…
In this paper, we show how to construct graph theoretical models of n-dimensional continuous objects and manifolds. These models retain topological properties of their continuous counterparts. An LCL collection of n-cells in Euclidean space is introduced and investigated. If an LCL collection of n-cells is a cover of a continuous n-dimensional manifold then the intersection graph of this cover is a digital closed n-dimensional manifold with the same topology as its continuous counterpart. As an example, we prove that the digital model of a continuous n-dimensional sphere is a digital n-sphere …
By use of Siegel's method and the classical results of homotopy groups of spheres and Lie groups, we determine some Gottlieb groups of projective spaces or give the lower bounds of their orders. Furthermore, making use of the properties of Whitehead products, we determine some Whitehead center groups of projective spaces.
We study aspects of the A^1-homotopy classification problem in dimensions >= 3 and, to this end, we investigate the problem of computing A^1-homotopy groups of some A^1-connected smooth varieties of dimension >=. Using these computations, we construct pairs of A^1-connected smooth proper varieties all of whose A^1-homotopy groups are abstractly isomorphic, yet which are not A^1-weakly equivalent. The examples come from pairs of Zariski locally trivial projective space bundles over projective spaces and are of the smallest possible dimension. Projectivizations of vector bundles give rise to A^1…
