We compute the Brown-Peterson cohomology of QX, the free infinite loop-space on X, when X is a space whose Morava K-theory is flat over its BP-cohomology, in particular a space whose Morava K-theory is concentrated in even degrees. Our computation is in terms of a destabilization functor for BP-cohomology. We also show that for such X, the Morava K-homology of QX is a free commutative algebra.
We prove that the $p$-completed Brown-Peterson spectrum is a retract of a product of Morava $E$-theory spectra. As a consequence, we generalize results of Ravenel-Wilson-Yagita and Kashiwabara from spaces to spectra and deduce that the notion of good group is determined by Brown-Peterson cohomology. Furthermore, we show that rational factorizations of the Morava $E$-theory of certain finite groups hold integrally up to bounded torsion with height-independent exponent, thereby lifting these factorizations to the rationalized Brown-Peterson cohomology of such groups.
The dual Steenrod algebra has a canonical subalgebra isomorphic to the homology of the Brown-Peterson spectrum. We will construct a secondary operation in mod-2 homology and show that this canonical subalgebra is not closed under it. This allows us to conclude that the 2-primary Brown-Peterson spectrum does not admit the structure of an E_n-algebra for any n greater than or equal to 12, answering a question of May in the negative.
We show that the odd-primary Brown-Peterson spectrum $\mathrm{BP}$ does not admit the structure of an $\mathbb{E}_{2(p^2+2)}$ ring spectrum and that there can be no map $\mathrm{MU} \to \mathrm{BP}$ of $\mathbb{E}_{2p+3}$ ring spectra. We also prove the same results for truncated Brown-Peterson spectra $\mathrm{BP} \langle n \rangle$ of height $n \geq 4$. This extends results of Lawson at the prime $2$.
For each odd prime p, we exhibit p-groups G of p-rank two such that (suitably defined) Chern classes of unitary representations of G fail to generate the following rings: 1. The even degree integral cohomology of G; 2. The final page of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for G; 3. The Brown-Peterson generalized cohomology of G. It follows that these groups afford counterexamples to conjectures of C. B. Thomas, M. F. Atiyah and P. Landweber.
For an odd prime $p$, we study the image of the Thom map from Brown-Peterson cohomology of $BPU_n$ to the ordinary cohomology in dimensions $0\leq i\leq 2p+2$, where $BPU_n$ is the classifying space of the projective unitary group $PU_n$. Also we show that a family of well understood $p$-torsion cohomology classes $y_{p,k}\in H^{2p^{k+1}+2}(BPU_n;Z_{(p)})$ are in the image of the Thom map.
For every $n\ge 0$, we construct classes in the Brown-Peterson cohomology $BP\langle n \rangle$ of smooth projective complex algebraic varieties which are not in the image of the cycle map from the corresponding motivic Brown-Peterson cohomology. This generalizes the examples of Atiyah and Hirzebruch to all finite levels in the Brown-Peterson tower.
We provide a lower bound for the coherence of the homotopy commutativity of the Brown-Peterson spectrum, BP, at a given prime p and prove that it is at least (2p^2 + 2p - 2)-homotopy commutative. We give a proof based on Dyer-Lashof operations that BP cannot be a Thom spectrum associated to n-fold loop maps to BSF for n=4 at 2 and n=2p+4 at odd primes. Other examples where we obtain estimates for coherence are the Johnson-Wilson spectra, localized away from the maximal ideal and unlocalized. We close with a negative result on Morava-K-theory.
We construct Hodge filtered function spaces associated to infinite loop spaces. For Brown-Peterson cohomology, we show that the corresponding Hodge filtered spaces satisfy an analog of Wilson's unstable splitting. As a consequence, we obtain an analog of Quillen's theorem for Hodge filtered Brown-Peterson cohomology for complex manifolds.
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a …
An algebraic criterion, in terms of closure under power operations, is determined for the existence and uniqueness of generalized trun- cated Brown-Peterson spectra of height 2 as E_\infty-ring spectra. The criterion is checked for an example at the prime 2 derived from the universal elliptic curve equipped with a level Γ_1(3)-structure.
This paper provides some explicit expressions concerning the formal group laws of the Brown-Peterson cohomology, the cohomology theory obtained from Brown-Peterson theory by killing all but one Witt symbol, the Morava $K$-theory and the Abel cohomology.
The main result of this note is an efficient presentation of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of Peterson varieties (in type $A$) as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal $\mathcal{J}$, in the spirit of the well-known Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Our result simplifies previous presentations given by Harada-Tymoczko and Bayegan-Harada. In particular, our result gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Bayegan and Harada that the defining ideal $\mathcal{J}$ is generated by quadratics.
Let G be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group and let Pet be the associated Peterson variety in the flag variety G/B. The main theorem of this note gives an efficient presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring H^*_S(Pet) of the Peterson variety as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal J generated by quadratic polynomials, in the spirit of the Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Here the group S \cong \mathbb{C}^* is a certain subgroup of a maximal torus T of G. Our description of the ideal J uses the Cartan matrix and is uniform across Lie types. In our …
Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculu…
These are notes, by Z. Fiedorowicz, from lectures given by J. Frank Adams at the University of Chicago in spring of 1973. They give an elegant axiomatic presentation of localization and completion in algebraic topology. The construction of localization and completion functors with respect to an arbitrary generalized homology theory is derived from the axioms by using the Brown representability theorem. These notes were never formally published, due to an apparent flaw in the proof. The relevant representable functors could not be shown to be set-valued, as opposed to class-valued. Subsequent w…
Fix the base field Q of rational numbers and let BP<n> denote the family of motivic truncated Brown-Peterson spectra over Q. We employ a "local-to-global" philosophy in order to compute the motivic Adams spectral sequence converging to the bi-graded homotopy groups of BP<n>. Along the way, we provide a new computation of the homotopy groups of BP<n> over the 2-adic rationals, prove a motivic Hasse principle for the spectra BP<n>, and deduce several classical and recent theorems about the K-theory of particular fields.
We equip $\mathrm{BP} \langle n \rangle$ with an $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{BP}$-algebra structure, for each prime $p$ and height $n$. The algebraic $K$-theory of this ring is of chromatic height exactly $n+1$, and the map $\mathrm{K}(\mathrm{BP}\langle n \rangle)_{(p)} \to \mathrm{L}_{n+1}^{f} \mathrm{K}(\mathrm{BP}\langle n\rangle)_{(p)}$ has bounded above fiber.
We characterize ring spectra morphisms from the algebraic cobordism spectrum $\QTR{Bbb}{MGL}$ (\QCITE{cite}{}{Vo1}) to an oriented spectrum $\QTR{Bbb}{E}$ (in the sense of Morel \QCITE{cite}{}{Mo}) via formal group laws on the ''topological'' subring $E^{*}=\oplus_iE^{2i,i}$ of $E^{**}$. This result is then used to construct for any prime $p$ a motivic Quillen idempotent on $\QTR{Bbb}{MGL}_{(p)}$. This defines the $BP$-spectrum associated to the prime $p$ as in Quillen's \QCITE{cite}{}{Q1} for the complex-oriented topological case.
We specify exterior generators for $π_* THH(MU) = π_*(MU) \otimes E(λ'_n \mid n\ge1)$ and $π_* THH(BP) = π_*(BP) \otimes E(λ_n \mid n\ge1)$, and calculate the action of the $σ$-operator on these graded rings. In particular, $σ(λ'_n) = 0$ and $σ(λ_n) = 0$, while the actions on $π_*(MU)$ and $π_*(BP)$ are expressed in terms of the right units $η_R$ in the Hopf algebroids $(π_*(MU), π_*(MU \wedge MU))$ and $(π_*(BP), π_*(BP \wedge BP))$, respectively.
We compute the equivariant bordism of free oriented $(\mathbb{Z}/p)^n$-manifolds as a module over $Ω_*^{SO}$, when $p$ is an odd prime. We show, among others, that this module is canonically isomorphic to a direct sum of suspensions of multiple tensor products of $Ω^{SO}_*(B \mathbb{Z}/p)$, and that it is generated by products of standard lens spaces. This considerably improves previous calculations by various authors. Our approach relies on the investigation of the submodule of the Brown-Peterson homology of $B (\mathbb{Z}/p)^n$ generated by elements coming from proper subgroups of $(\mathbb{…
In this article, we study the topological Hochschild homology of $\mathbf{E}_3$-forms of truncated Brown-Peterson spectra, taken relative to certain Thom spectra $X(p^n)$ (introduced by Ravenel and used by Devinatz-Hopkins-Smith in the proof of the nilpotence theorem). We prove analogues of Bökstedt's calculations $\mathrm{THH}(\mathbf{F}_p) \simeq \mathbf{F}_p[ΩS^3]$ and $\mathrm{THH}(\mathbf{Z}_p) \simeq \mathbf{Z}_p[ΩS^3\langle{3}\rangle]$. We also construct a topological analogue of the Sen operator of Bhatt-Lurie-Drinfeld, and study a higher chromatic extension. The behavior of these "top…
We use Brown-Peterson cohomology to obtain lower bounds for the higher topological complexity, TC_k(RP^n), of real projective spaces, which are often much stronger than those implied by ordinary mod-2 cohomology.
Previous work constructed a generalized truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum of chromatic height 2 at the prime 2 as an E_infinity-ring spectrum, based on the study of elliptic curves with level-3 structure. We show that the natural map forgetting this level structure induces an E_infinity-ring map from the spectrum of topological modular forms to this truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum, and that this orientation fits into a diagram of E_infinity-ring spectra lifting a classical diagram of modules over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra. In an appendix we document how to organize Morava's forms of K-theor…
It is well known that cohomology with compact supports is not a homotopy invariant but only a proper homotopy one. However, as the proper category lacks of general categorical properties, a Brown representability theorem type does not seem reachable. However, by proving such a theorem for the so called exterior cohomology in the complete and cocomplete exterior category, we show that the $n$-th cohomology with compact supports of a given countable, locally finite, finite dimensional relative CW-complex $(X,\mathbb{R}_+)$ is naturally identified with the set $[X,K_n]^{\mathbb{R}_+}$ of exterior…
We compute the homotopy groups of spectra associated by a theorem of Lurie to the Shimura curves of discriminants 6, 10, and 14, beginning with a computation of integral rings of automorphic forms on these curves. As an application, we find that a generalized truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum BP<2> is an E_\infty ring spectrum at the prime 3.
We study natural subalgebras Ch_E(G) of group cohomology defined in terms of infinite loop spaces E and give representation theoretic descriptions of those based on QS^0 and the Johnson-Wilson theories E(n). We describe the subalgebras arising from the Brown-Peterson spectra BP and as a result give a simple reproof of Yagita's theorem that the image of BP^*(BG) in H^*(BG;F_p) is F-isomorphic to the whole cohomology ring; the same result is shown to hold with BP replaced by any complex oriented theory E with a map of ring spectra from E to HF_p which is non-trivial in homotopy. We also extend t…
We uncover a somewhat surprising connection between spaces of multiplicative maps between $A_\infty$-ring spectra and topological Hochschild cohomology. As a consequence we show that such spaces become infinite loop spaces after looping only once. We also prove that any multiplicative cohomology operation in complex cobordisms theory $MU$ canonically lifts to an $A_\infty$-map $MU\to MU$. This implies, in particular, that the Brown-Peterson spectrum $BP$ splits off $MU$ as an $A_\infty$-ring spectrum.
A structure theorem for bounded-below modules over the subalgebra A(1) of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra generated by Sq^1, Sq^2 is proved; this is applied to prove a classification theorem for a family of indecomposable A(1)-modules. The action of the A(1)-Picard group on this family is described, as is the behaviour of duality. The cohomology of dual Brown-Gitler spectra is identified within this family and the relation with members of the A(1)-Picard group is made explicit. Similarly, the cohomology of truncated projective spaces is considered within this classification; this leads to a concept…
This paper is built on the following observation: the purity of the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of Brown's moduli spaces is essentially equivalent to the freeness of the dihedral operad underlying the gravity operad. We prove these two facts by relying on both the geometric and the algebraic aspects of the problem: the complete geometric description of the cohomology of Brown's moduli spaces and the coradical filtration of cofree cooperads. This gives a conceptual proof of an identity of Bergström-Brown which expresses the Betti numbers of Brown's moduli spaces via the inversion of…
We use the multiplicative structure of the Koszul resolution to give short and simple proofs of some known estimates for the total dimension of the cohomology of spaces which admit free torus actions and analogous results for filtered differential modules over polynomial rings. We also point out the possibility of improving these results in the presence of a multiplicative structure on the so-called minimal Hirsch-Brown model for the equivariant cohomology of the space.
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of the classifying spaces for the symplectic and special linear groups. In the structural description we give, contributions from real and complex realization are clearly visible. In particular, the computation of cohomology with $\mathbf{I}^j$-coefficients is done closely along the lines of Brown's computation of integral cohomology for special orthogonal groups. The computations for the symplectic groups show that Chow-Witt groups are a symplectically oriented ring cohomology theory. Using our computations for special linear groups, we also discuss the question…
Francis Brown introduced a partial compactification $M_{0,n}^δ$ of the moduli space $M_{0,n}$. We prove that the gravity cooperad, given by the degree-shifted cohomologies of the spaces $M_{0,n}$, is cofree as a nonsymmetric anticyclic cooperad; moreover, the cogenerators are given by the cohomology groups of $M_{0,n}^δ$. This says in particular that $H^\bullet(M_{0,n}^δ)$ injects into $H^\bullet(M_{0,n})$. As part of the proof we construct an explicit diagrammatically defined basis of $H^\bullet(M_{0,n})$ which is compatible with cooperadic cocomposition, and such that a subset forms a basis …
