In \cite[Theorem 2.5]{Bac16} Bachiller proved that if $(G, \cdot, \circ)$ is a brace of order the power of a prime $p$ and the rank of $(G,\cdot)$ is smaller than $p-1$, then the order of any element is the same in the additive and multiplicative group. This means that in this case the isomorphism type of $(G,\circ)$ determines the isomorphism type of $(G,\cdot)$. In this paper we complement Bachiller's result in two directions. In Theorem 2.2 we prove that if $(G, \cdot, \circ)$ is a brace of order the power of a prime $p$, then $(G,\cdot)$ has small rank (i.e. $< p-1$) if and only if $(G,\circ)$ has small rank. We also provide examples of groups of rank $p-1$ in which elements of arbitrarily large order in the additive group become of prime order in the multiplicative group. When the rank is larger, orders may increase.
In this paper we define a class of braces, that we call module braces or $R$-braces, which are braces for which the additive group has also a module structure over a ring $R$, and for which the values of the gamma functions are automorphisms of $R$-modules. This class of braces has already been considered in the literature in the case where the ring $R$ is a field: we generalise the definition to any ring $R$, reinterpreting it in terms of the so-called gamma function associated to the brace, and prove that this class of braces enjoys all the natural properties one can require. We exhibit expl…
A. Smoktunowicz and L. Vendramin conjectured that if $A$ is a finite skew brace with solvable additive group, then the multiplicative group of $A$ is solvable. In this short note we make a step towards positive solution of this conjecture proving that if $A$ is a minimal finite skew brace with solvable additive group and non-solvable multiplicative group, then the multiplicative group of $A$ is not simple. On the way to obtaining this result, we prove that the conjecture of A. Smoktunowicz and L. Vendramin is correct in the case when the order of $A$ is not divisible by $3$.
We study relations between the additive and the multiplicative groups of a two-sided skew brace. In particular, we prove that if the additive group of a two-sided skew brace is finite solvable (respectively, finitely generated nilpotent, finitely generated residually nilpotent, finitely generated residually finite), then the multiplicative group of this skew brace is solvable (respectively, solvable, residually solvable, residually finite). Also, we prove that if the multiplicative group of a two-sided skew brace is nilpotent of nilpotency class $k$, then the additive group of this skew brace …
We determine right nilpotency of braces of cardinality $p^4$. If a brace of cardinality $p^4$ has an abelian multiplicative group, then it is left and right nilpotent, so we only consider braces with non-abelian multiplicative groups. We show right nilpotency in all cases using the sufficient condition of $A\ast c=0$ for some central element $c$ of a brace $A$.
Left braces, introduced by Rump, have turned out to provide an important tool in the study of set theoretic solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, they have allowed to construct several new families of solutions. A left brace $(B,+,\cdot )$ is a structure determined by two group structures on a set $B$: an abelian group $(B,+)$ and a group $(B,\cdot)$, satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The main result of this paper shows that every finite abelian group $A$ is a subgroup of the additive group of a finite simple left brace $B$ with metabelian multiplicative grou…
Let $G$ and $N$ be two finite groups of the same order. It is well-known that the existences of the following are equivalent: (a) a Hopf-Galois structure of type $N$ on any Galois $G$-extension; (b) a skew brace with additive group $N$ and multiplicative group $G$; (c) a regular subgroup isomorphic to $G$ in the holomorph of $N$. We shall say that $(G,N)$ is realizable when any of the above exists. Fixing $N$ to be a cyclic group, W. Rump (2019) has determined the groups $G$ for which $(G,N)$ is realizable. In this paper, fixing $G$ to be a cyclic group instead, we shall give a complete charac…
A skew brace is a triplet $(A,\cdot,\circ)$, where $(A,\cdot)$ and $(A,\circ)$ are groups such that the brace relation $x\circ (y\cdot z) = (x\circ y)\cdot x^{-1}\cdot (x\circ z)$ holds for all $x,y,z\in A$. In this paper, we study the number of finite skew braces $(A,\cdot,\circ)$, up to isomorphism, such that $(A,\cdot)$ and $(A,\circ)$ are both isomorphic to $T^n$ with $T$ non-abelian simple and $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that it is equal to the number of unlabeled directed graphs on $n+1$ vertices, with one distingusihed vertex, and whose underlying undirected graph is a tree. In particula…
Given a finite group $ G $, we study certain regular subgroups of the group of permutations of $ G $, which occur in the classification theories of two types of algebraic objects: skew left braces with multiplicative group isomorphic to $ G $ and Hopf-Galois structures admitted by a Galois extension of fields with Galois group isomorphic to $ G $. We study the questions of when two such subgroups yield isomorphic skew left braces or Hopf-Galois structures involving isomorphic Hopf algebras. In particular, we show that in some cases the isomorphism class of the Hopf algebra giving a Hopf-Galois…
Braces were introduced by W. Rump in 2006 as an algebraic system related to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In 2017, L. Guarnieri and L. Vendramin defined for the same purposes a more general notion of a skew left brace. Recently, L. Guo, H. Lang, Y. Sheng [arXiv:2009.03492] gave a definition of what is a Rota-Baxter operator on a group. We connect these two notions as follows. It is shown that every Rota-Baxter group gives rise to a skew left brace. Moreover, every skew left brace can be injectively embedded into a Rota-Baxter group. When the additive group of a skew left brace is complete,…
General results on multiplicative lattices found recently by Facchini, Finocchiaro and Janelidze have been studied in the particular case of groups by Facchini, de Giovanni and Trombetti. In this paper we prove that these results hold not only for the multiplicative lattices of all normal subgroups of a group, but also for much more general multiplicative lattices. Therefore they can be applied to other algebraic structures, for instance to braces.
We introduce the notion of Drinfeld twists for both set-theoretical YBE solutions and skew braces. We give examples of such twists and show that all twists between skew braces come from families of isomorphisms between their additive groups. We then describe the relation between these definitions and co-twists on FRT-type Hopf algebras in the category $\mathrm{SupLat}$, and prove that any co-twist on a co-quasitriangular Hopf algebra in $\mathrm{SupLat}$ induces a Drinfeld twist on its remnant skew brace. We go on to classify co-twists on bicrossproduct Hopf algebras coming from groups with un…
Braces are generalizations of radical rings, introduced by Rump to study involutive non-degenerate set-theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE). Skew braces were also recently introduced as a tool to study not necessarily involutive solutions. Roughly speaking, skew braces provide group-theoretical and ring-theoretical methods to understand solutions of the YBE. It turns out that skew braces appear in many different contexts, such as near-rings, matched pairs of groups, triply factorized groups, bijective 1-cocycles and Hopf-Galois extensions. These connections and some of their…
