In this paper, we propose a novel graph convolutional network architecture, Graph Stacked Hourglass Networks, for 2D-to-3D human pose estimation tasks. The proposed architecture consists of repeated encoder-decoder, in which graph-structured features are processed across three different scales of human skeletal representations. This multi-scale architecture enables the model to learn both local and global feature representations, which are critical for 3D human pose estimation. We also introduce a multi-level feature learning approach using different-depth intermediate features and show the performance improvements that result from exploiting multi-scale, multi-level feature representations. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate our approach, and the results show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art.
This work introduces a novel convolutional network architecture for the task of human pose estimation. Features are processed across all scales and consolidated to best capture the various spatial relationships associated with the body. We show how repeated bottom-up, top-down processing used in conjunction with intermediate supervision is critical to improving the performance of the network. We refer to the architecture as a "stacked hourglass" network based on the successive steps of pooling and upsampling that are done to produce a final set of predictions. State-of-the-art results are achi…
Human pose estimation (HPE) is a classical task in computer vision that focuses on representing the orientation of a person by identifying the positions of their joints. We design a lighterversion of the stacked hourglass network with minimal loss in performance of the model. The lightweight 2-stacked hourglass has a reduced number of channels with depthwise separable convolutions, residual connections with concatenation, and residual connections between the necks of the hourglasses. The final model has a marginal drop in performance with 79% reduction in the number of parameters and a similar…
A key step to driver safety is to observe the driver's activities with the face being a key step in this process to extracting information such as head pose, blink rate, yawns, talking to passenger which can then help derive higher level information such as distraction, drowsiness, intent, and where they are looking. In the context of driving safety, it is important for the system perform robust estimation under harsh lighting and occlusion but also be able to detect when the occlusion occurs so that information predicted from occluded parts of the face can be taken into account properly. Human pose estimation (HPE) is one of the most challenging tasks in computer vision as humans are deformable by nature and thus their pose has so much variance. HPE aims to correctly identify the main joint locations of a single person or multiple people in a given image or video. Locating joints of a person in images or videos is an important task that can be applied in action recognition and object tracking. As have many computer vision tasks, HPE has advanced massively with the introduction of deep learning to the field. In this paper, we focus on one of the deep learning-based approaches o…

Labeling vertebral discs from MRI scans is important for the proper diagnosis of spinal related diseases, including multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, degenerative cervical myelopathy and cancer. Automatic labeling of the vertebral discs in MRI data is a difficult task because of the similarity between discs and bone area, the variability in the geometry of the spine and surrounding tissues across individuals, and the variability across scans (manufacturers, pulse sequence, image contrast, resolution and artefacts). In previous studies, vertebral disc labeling is often done aft…

Human pose estimation is a fundamental yet challenging task in computer vision. Although deep learning techniques have made great progress in this area, difficult scenarios (e.g., invisible keypoints, occlusions, complex multi-person scenarios, and abnormal poses) are still not well-handled. To alleviate these issues, we propose a novel Spatial Preserve and Content-aware Network(SPCNet), which includes two effective modules: Dilated Hourglass Module(DHM) and Selective Information Module(SIM). By using the Dilated Hourglass Module, we can preserve the spatial resolution along with large recepti…

The existing human pose estimation methods are confronted with inaccurate long-distance regression or high computational cost due to the complex learning objectives. This work proposes a novel deep learning framework for human pose estimation called composite localization to divide the complex learning objective into two simpler ones: a sparse heatmap to find the keypoint's approximate location and two short-distance offsetmaps to obtain its final precise coordinates. To realize the framework, we construct two types of composite localization networks: CLNet-ResNet and CLNet-Hourglass. We evalu…

At present, most high-accuracy single-person pose estimation methods have high computational complexity and insufficient real-time performance due to the complex structure of the network model. However, a single-person pose estimation method with high real-time performance also needs to improve its accuracy due to the simple structure of the network model. It is currently difficult to achieve both high accuracy and real-time performance in single-person pose estimation. For use in human-machine cooperative operations, this paper proposes a single-person upper limb pose estimation method based …

The cost aggregation strategy shows a crucial role in learning-based stereo matching tasks, where 3D convolutional filters obtain state of the art but require intensive computation resources, while 2D operations need less GPU memory but are sensitive to domain shift. In this paper, we decouple the 4D cubic cost volume used by 3D convolutional filters into sequential cost maps along the direction of disparity instead of dealing with it at once by exploiting a recurrent cost aggregation strategy. This paper presents a deep learning based approach to the problem of human pose estimation. We employ generative adversarial networks as our learning paradigm in which we set up two stacked hourglass networks with the same architecture, one as the generator and the other as the discriminator. The generator is used as a human pose estimator after the training is done. The discriminator distinguishes ground-truth heatmaps from generated ones, and back-propagates the adversarial loss to the generator. This process enables the generator to learn plausible human body configurations and is shown to …

We propose HG-RCNN, a Mask-RCNN based network that also leverages the benefits of the Hourglass architecture for multi-person 3D Human Pose Estimation. A two-staged approach is presented that first estimates the 2D keypoints in every Region of Interest (RoI) and then lifts the estimated keypoints to 3D. The proposed method deals with a variable number of people and does not need bounding boxes to estimate the 3D poses. It leverages and extends the Stacked Hourglass Network and its multi-scale feature learning to manage multi-person situations. In this paper, we introduce a contrastive learning framework for keypoint detection (CoKe). Keypoint detection differs from other visual tasks where contrastive learning has been applied because the input is a set of images in which multiple keypoints are annotated. This requires the contrastive learning to be extended such that the keypoints are represented and detected independently, which enables the contrastive loss to make the keypoint features different from each other and from the background. Our approach has two benefits: It enables us to exploit contrastive learning for keypoint detec…
