In this paper, we focus on tackling the precise keypoint coordinates regression task. Most existing approaches adopt complicated networks with a large number of parameters, leading to a heavy model with poor cost-effectiveness in practice. To overcome this limitation, we develop a small yet discrimicative model called STair Network, which can be simply stacked towards an accurate multi-stage pose estimation system. Specifically, to reduce computational cost, STair Network is composed of novel basic feature extraction blocks which focus on promoting feature diversity and obtaining rich local representations with fewer parameters, enabling a satisfactory balance on efficiency and performance. To further improve the performance, we introduce two mechanisms with negligible computational cost, focusing on feature fusion and replenish. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the STair Network on two standard datasets, e.g., 1-stage STair Network achieves a higher accuracy than HRNet by 5.5% on COCO test dataset with 80\% fewer parameters and 68% fewer GFLOPs.
One-stage object detectors such as SSD or YOLO already have shown promising accuracy with small memory footprint and fast speed. However, it is widely recognized that one-stage detectors have difficulty in detecting small objects while they are competitive with two-stage methods on large objects. In this paper, we investigate how to alleviate this problem starting from the SSD framework. Due to their pyramidal design, the lower layer that is responsible for small objects lacks strong semantics(e.g contextual information). We address this problem by introducing a feature combining module that s…

We present a learning-based method for 6 DoF pose estimation of rigid objects in point cloud data. Many recent learning-based approaches use primarily RGB information for detecting objects, in some cases with an added refinement step using depth data. Our method consumes unordered point sets with/without RGB information, from initial detection to the final transformation estimation stage. This allows us to achieve accurate pose estimates, in some cases surpassing state of the art methods trained on the same data.

Human behavioral monitoring during sleep is essential for various medical applications. Majority of the contactless human pose estimation algorithms are based on RGB modality, causing ineffectiveness in in-bed pose estimation due to occlusions by blankets and varying illumination conditions. Long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) modality based pose estimation algorithms overcome the aforementioned challenges; however, ground truth pose generations by a human annotator under such conditions are not feasible. A feasible solution to address this issue is to transfer the knowledge learned from images wi…

Video-based human pose estimation in crowded scenes is a challenging problem due to occlusion, motion blur, scale variation and viewpoint change, etc. Prior approaches always fail to deal with this problem because of (1) lacking of usage of temporal information; (2) lacking of training data in crowded scenes. In this paper, we focus on improving human pose estimation in videos of crowded scenes from the perspectives of exploiting temporal context and collecting new data. In particular, we first follow the top-down strategy to detect persons and perform single-person pose estimation for each fr…

Most of the existing deep learning-based methods for 3D hand and human pose estimation from a single depth map are based on a common framework that takes a 2D depth map and directly regresses the 3D coordinates of keypoints, such as hand or human body joints, via 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The first weakness of this approach is the presence of perspective distortion in the 2D depth map. While the depth map is intrinsically 3D data, many previous methods treat depth maps as 2D images that can distort the shape of the actual object through projection from 3D to 2D space. This compe…

Estimating 3D human pose from a single image is a challenging task. This work attempts to address the uncertainty of lifting the detected 2D joints to the 3D space by introducing an intermediate state - Part-Centric Heatmap Triplets (HEMlets), which shortens the gap between the 2D observation and the 3D interpretation. The HEMlets utilize three joint-heatmaps to represent the relative depth information of the end-joints for each skeletal body part. In our approach, a Convolutional Network (ConvNet) is first trained to predict HEMlests from the input image, followed by a volumetric joint-heatma…
We study human pose estimation in extremely low-light images. This task is challenging due to the difficulty of collecting real low-light images with accurate labels, and severely corrupted inputs that degrade prediction quality significantly. To address the first issue, we develop a dedicated camera system and build a new dataset of real low-light images with accurate pose labels. Thanks to our camera system, each low-light image in our dataset is coupled with an aligned well-lit image, which enables accurate pose labeling and is used as privileged information during training. We also propose…
This paper is on highly accurate and highly efficient human pose estimation. Recent works based on Fully Convolutional Networks (FCNs) have demonstrated excellent results for this difficult problem. While residual connections within FCNs have proved to be quintessential for achieving high accuracy, we re-analyze this design choice in the context of improving both the accuracy and the efficiency over the state-of-the-art. In particular, we make the following contributions: (a) We propose gated skip connections with per-channel learnable parameters to control the data flow for each channel withi…
We introduce a novel method for 3D object detection and pose estimation from color images only. We first use segmentation to detect the objects of interest in 2D even in presence of partial occlusions and cluttered background. By contrast with recent patch-based methods, we rely on a "holistic" approach: We apply to the detected objects a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained to predict their 3D poses in the form of 2D projections of the corners of their 3D bounding boxes. This, however, is not sufficient for handling objects from the recent T-LESS dataset: These objects exhibit an axis o…
Recently, most of the state-of-the-art human pose estimation methods are based on heatmap regression. The final coordinates of keypoints are obtained by decoding heatmap directly. In this paper, we aim to find a better approach to get more accurate localization results. We mainly put forward two suggestions for improvement: 1) different features and methods should be applied for rough and accurate localization, 2) relationship between keypoints should be considered. Specifically, we propose a two-stage graph-based and model-agnostic framework, called Graph-PCNN, with a localization subnet and …

Occlusion is probably the biggest challenge for human pose estimation in the wild. Typical solutions often rely on intrusive sensors such as IMUs to detect occluded joints. To make the task truly unconstrained, we present AdaFuse, an adaptive multiview fusion method, which can enhance the features in occluded views by leveraging those in visible views. The core of AdaFuse is to determine the point-point correspondence between two views which we solve effectively by exploring the sparsity of the heatmap representation. We also learn an adaptive fusion weight for each camera view to reflect its …

In this study, we present a pragmatic lightweight pose estimation model. Our model can achieve real-time predictions using low-power embedded devices. This system was found to be very accurate and achieved a 94.5% accuracy of SOTA HRNet 256x192 using a computational cost of only 3.8% on COCO test dataset. Our model adopts an encoder-decoder architecture and is carefully downsized to improve its efficiency. We especially focused on optimizing the deconvolution layers and observed that the channel reduction of the deconvolution layers contributes significantly to reducing computational resource …
Accurate estimation of 3D human motion from monocular video requires modeling both kinematics (body motion without physical forces) and dynamics (motion with physical forces). To demonstrate this, we present SimPoE, a Simulation-based approach for 3D human Pose Estimation, which integrates image-based kinematic inference and physics-based dynamics modeling. SimPoE learns a policy that takes as input the current-frame pose estimate and the next image frame to control a physically-simulated character to output the next-frame pose estimate. The policy contains a learnable kinematic pose refinemen…

Scene context is a powerful constraint on the geometry of objects within the scene in cases, such as surveillance, where the camera geometry is unknown and image quality may be poor. In this paper, we describe a method for estimating the pose of cars in a scene jointly with the ground plane that supports them. We formulate this as a joint optimization that accounts for varying car shape using a statistical atlas, and which simultaneously computes geometry and internal camera parameters. We demonstrate that this method produces significant improvements for car pose estimation, and we show that …
Current 6D object pose methods consist of deep CNN models fully optimized for a single object but with its architecture standardized among objects with different shapes. In contrast to previous works, we explicitly exploit each object's distinct topological information i.e. 3D dense meshes in the pose estimation model, with an automated process and prior to any post-processing refinement stage. In order to achieve this, we propose a learning framework in which a Graph Convolutional Neural Network reconstructs a pose conditioned 3D mesh of the object. A robust estimation of the allocentric orie…

The rapid development of autonomous driving, abnormal behavior detection, and behavior recognition makes an increasing demand for multi-person pose estimation-based applications, especially on mobile platforms. However, to achieve high accuracy, state-of-the-art methods tend to have a large model size and complex post-processing algorithm, which costs intense computation and long end-to-end latency. To solve this problem, we propose an architecture optimization and weight pruning framework to accelerate inference of multi-person pose estimation on mobile devices. With our optimization framewor…
This paper addresses the problem of monocular 3D human shape and pose estimation from an RGB image. Despite great progress in this field in terms of pose prediction accuracy, state-of-the-art methods often predict inaccurate body shapes. We suggest that this is primarily due to the scarcity of in-the-wild training data with diverse and accurate body shape labels. Thus, we propose STRAPS (Synthetic Training for Real Accurate Pose and Shape), a system that utilises proxy representations, such as silhouettes and 2D joints, as inputs to a shape and pose regression neural network, which is trained …

In this work, we tackle the problem of active camera localization, which controls the camera movements actively to achieve an accurate camera pose. The past solutions are mostly based on Markov Localization, which reduces the position-wise camera uncertainty for localization. These approaches localize the camera in the discrete pose space and are agnostic to the localization-driven scene property, which restricts the camera pose accuracy in the coarse scale. We propose to overcome these limitations via a novel active camera localization algorithm, composed of a passive and an active localizati…

This technical report introduces CyberLoc, an image-based visual localization pipeline for robust and accurate long-term pose estimation under challenging conditions. The proposed method comprises four modules connected in a sequence. First, a mapping module is applied to build accurate 3D maps of the scene, one map for each reference sequence if there exist multiple reference sequences under different conditions. Second, a single-image-based localization pipeline (retrieval--matching--PnP) is performed to estimate 6-DoF camera poses for each query image, one for each 3D map. Third, a consensu…

In this paper we introduce EfficientPose, a new approach for 6D object pose estimation. Our method is highly accurate, efficient and scalable over a wide range of computational resources. Moreover, it can detect the 2D bounding box of multiple objects and instances as well as estimate their full 6D poses in a single shot. This eliminates the significant increase in runtime when dealing with multiple objects other approaches suffer from. These approaches aim to first detect 2D targets, e.g. keypoints, and solve a Perspective-n-Point problem for their 6D pose for each object afterwards. We also …

Estimating 3D hand poses from a single RGB image is challenging because depth ambiguity leads the problem ill-posed. Training hand pose estimators with 3D hand mesh annotations and multi-view images often results in significant performance gains. However, existing multi-view datasets are relatively small with hand joints annotated by off-the-shelf trackers or automated through model predictions, both of which may be inaccurate and can introduce biases. Collecting a large-scale multi-view 3D hand pose images with accurate mesh and joint annotations is valuable but strenuous. In this paper, we d…
Object pose estimation enables robots to understand and interact with their environments. Training with synthetic data is necessary in order to adapt to novel situations. Unfortunately, pose estimation under domain shift, i.e., training on synthetic data and testing in the real world, is challenging. Deep learning-based approaches currently perform best when using encoder-decoder networks but typically do not generalize to new scenarios with different scene characteristics. We argue that patch-based approaches, instead of encoder-decoder networks, are more suited for synthetic-to-real transfer…

A key challenge in the task of human pose and shape estimation is occlusion, including self-occlusions, object-human occlusions, and inter-person occlusions. The lack of diverse and accurate pose and shape training data becomes a major bottleneck, especially for scenes with occlusions in the wild. In this paper, we focus on the estimation of human pose and shape in the case of inter-person occlusions, while also handling object-human occlusions and self-occlusion. We propose a novel framework that synthesizes occlusion-aware silhouette and 2D keypoints data and directly regress to the SMPL pos…

DeepPrior is a simple approach based on Deep Learning that predicts the joint 3D locations of a hand given a depth map. Since its publication early 2015, it has been outperformed by several impressive works. Here we show that with simple improvements: adding ResNet layers, data augmentation, and better initial hand localization, we achieve better or similar performance than more sophisticated recent methods on the three main benchmarks (NYU, ICVL, MSRA) while keeping the simplicity of the original method. Our new implementation is available at https://github.com/moberweger/deep-prior-pp .
Despite the attention marker-less pose estimation has attracted in recent years, marker-based approaches still provide unbeatable accuracy under controlled environmental conditions. Thus, they are used in many fields such as robotics or biomedical applications but are primarily implemented through classical approaches, which require lots of heuristics and parameter tuning for reliable performance under different environments. In this work, we propose MarkerPose, a robust, real-time pose estimation system based on a planar target of three circles and a stereo vision system. MarkerPose is meant …

3D hand pose estimation methods have made significant progress recently. However, the estimation accuracy is often far from sufficient for specific real-world applications, and thus there is significant room for improvement. This paper proposes TriHorn-Net, a novel model that uses specific innovations to improve hand pose estimation accuracy on depth images. The first innovation is the decomposition of the 3D hand pose estimation into the estimation of 2D joint locations in the depth image space (UV), and the estimation of their corresponding depths aided by two complementary attention maps. Whole-body 3D human mesh estimation aims to reconstruct the 3D human body, hands, and face simultaneously. Although several methods have been proposed, accurate prediction of 3D hands, which consist of 3D wrist and fingers, still remains challenging due to two reasons. First, the human kinematic chain has not been carefully considered when predicting the 3D wrists. Second, previous works utilize body features for the 3D fingers, where the body feature barely contains finger information. To resolve the limitations, we present Hand4Whole, which has two strong points over previous works. First, w…

We introduce an approach that accurately reconstructs 3D human poses and detailed 3D full-body geometric models from single images in realtime. The key idea of our approach is a novel end-to-end multi-task deep learning framework that uses single images to predict five outputs simultaneously: foreground segmentation mask, 2D joints positions, semantic body partitions, 3D part orientations and uv coordinates (uv map). The multi-task network architecture not only generates more visual cues for reconstruction, but also makes each individual prediction more accurate. The CNN regressor is further c…
We propose a simple and efficient method for exploiting synthetic images when training a Deep Network to predict a 3D pose from an image. The ability of using synthetic images for training a Deep Network is extremely valuable as it is easy to create a virtually infinite training set made of such images, while capturing and annotating real images can be very cumbersome. However, synthetic images do not resemble real images exactly, and using them for training can result in suboptimal performance. It was recently shown that for exemplar-based approaches, it is possible to learn a mapping from th…

We propose a robust and accurate method for estimating the 3D poses of two hands in close interaction from a single color image. This is a very challenging problem, as large occlusions and many confusions between the joints may happen. State-of-the-art methods solve this problem by regressing a heatmap for each joint, which requires solving two problems simultaneously: localizing the joints and recognizing them. In this work, we propose to separate these tasks by relying on a CNN to first localize joints as 2D keypoints, and on self-attention between the CNN features at these keypoints to asso…
Most of the previous image-based 3D human pose and mesh estimation methods estimate parameters of the human mesh model from an input image. However, directly regressing the parameters from the input image is a highly non-linear mapping because it breaks the spatial relationship between pixels in the input image. In addition, it cannot model the prediction uncertainty, which can make training harder. To resolve the above issues, we propose I2L-MeshNet, an image-to-lixel (line+pixel) prediction network. The proposed I2L-MeshNet predicts the per-lixel likelihood on 1D heatmaps for each mesh verte…
