Perception techniques for autonomous driving should be adaptive to various environments. In the case of traffic line detection, an essential perception module, many condition should be considered, such as number of traffic lines and computing power of the target system. To address these problems, in this paper, we propose a traffic line detection method called Point Instance Network (PINet); the method is based on the key points estimation and instance segmentation approach. The PINet includes several stacked hourglass networks that are trained simultaneously. Therefore the size of the trained models can be chosen according to the computing power of the target environment. We cast a clustering problem of the predicted key points as an instance segmentation problem; the PINet can be trained regardless of the number of the traffic lines. The PINet achieves competitive accuracy and false positive on the TuSimple and Culane datasets, popular public datasets for lane detection. Our code is available at https://github.com/koyeongmin/PINet_new

Lane detection plays an important role in a self-driving vehicle. Several studies leverage a semantic segmentation network to extract robust lane features, but few of them can distinguish different types of lanes. In this paper, we focus on the problem of multi-class lane semantic segmentation. Based on the observation that the lane is a small-size and narrow-width object in a road scene image, we propose two techniques, Feature Size Selection (FSS) and Degressive Dilation Block (DD Block). The FSS allows a network to extract thin lane features using appropriate feature sizes. To acquire fine-…

Modern cars are incorporating an increasing number of driver assist features, among which automatic lane keeping. The latter allows the car to properly position itself within the road lanes, which is also crucial for any subsequent lane departure or trajectory planning decision in fully autonomous cars. Traditional lane detection methods rely on a combination of highly-specialized, hand-crafted features and heuristics, usually followed by post-processing techniques, that are computationally expensive and prone to scalability due to road scene variations. More recent approaches leverage deep le…

The knowledge about the placement and appearance of lane markings is a prerequisite for the creation of maps with high precision, necessary for autonomous driving, infrastructure monitoring, lane-wise traffic management, and urban planning. Lane markings are one of the important components of such maps. Lane markings convey the rules of roads to drivers. While these rules are learned by humans, an autonomous driving vehicle should be taught to learn them to localize itself. Therefore, accurate and reliable lane marking semantic segmentation in the imagery of roads and highways is needed to ach…

It is a crucial step to achieve effective semantic segmentation of lane marking during the construction of the lane level high-precision map. In recent years, many image semantic segmentation methods have been proposed. These methods mainly focus on the image from camera, due to the limitation of the sensor itself, the accurate three-dimensional spatial position of the lane marking cannot be obtained, so the demand for the lane level high-precision map construction cannot be met. This paper proposes a lane marking semantic segmentation method based on LIDAR and camera fusion deep neural networ…
A number of lane detection methods depend on a proposal-free instance segmentation because of its adaptability to flexible object shape, occlusion, and real-time application. This paper addresses the problem that pixel embedding in proposal-free instance segmentation based lane detection is difficult to optimize. A translation invariance of convolution, which is one of the supposed strengths, causes challenges in optimizing pixel embedding. In this work, we propose a lane detection method based on proposal-free instance segmentation, directly optimizing spatial embedding of pixels using image …
Autonomous vehicles require knowledge of the surrounding road layout, which can be predicted by state-of-the-art CNNs. This work addresses the current lack of data for determining lane instances, which are needed for various driving manoeuvres. The main issue is the time-consuming manual labelling process, typically applied per image. We notice that driving the car is itself a form of annotation. Therefore, we propose a semi-automated method that allows for efficient labelling of image sequences by utilising an estimated road plane in 3D based on where the car has driven and projecting labels …
Lane detection is an important yet challenging task in autonomous driving, which is affected by many factors, e.g., light conditions, occlusions caused by other vehicles, irrelevant markings on the road and the inherent long and thin property of lanes. Conventional methods typically treat lane detection as a semantic segmentation task, which assigns a class label to each pixel of the image. This formulation heavily depends on the assumption that the number of lanes is pre-defined and fixed and no lane changing occurs, which does not always hold. To make the lane detection model applicable to a…

In this paper, we present a novel model to detect lane regions and extract lane departure events (changes and incursions) from challenging, lower-resolution videos recorded with mobile cameras. Our algorithm used a Mask-RCNN based lane detection model as pre-processor. Recently, deep learning-based models provide state-of-the-art technology for object detection combined with segmentation. Among the several deep learning architectures, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) outperformed other machine learning models, especially for region proposal and object detection tasks. Recent development in…
Accurate detection of lane and road markings is a task of great importance for intelligent vehicles. In existing approaches, the detection accuracy often degrades with the increasing distance. This is due to the fact that distant lane and road markings occupy a small number of pixels in the image, and scales of lane and road markings are inconsistent at various distances and perspectives. The Inverse Perspective Mapping (IPM) can be used to eliminate the perspective distortion, but the inherent interpolation can lead to artifacts especially around distant lane and road markings and thus has a …

In this paper, we describe a new deep convolutional neural network architecture called Vec2Instance for instance segmentation. Vec2Instance provides a framework for parametrization of instances, allowing convolutional neural networks to efficiently estimate the complex shapes of instances around their centroids. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture with respect to instance segmentation…
Object detection or localization is an incremental step in progression from coarse to fine digital image inference. It not only provides the classes of the image objects, but also provides the location of the image objects which have been classified. The location is given in the form of bounding boxes or centroids. Semantic segmentation gives fine inference by predicting labels for every pixel in the input image. Each pixel is labelled according to the object class within which it is enclosed. Furthering this evolution, instance segmentation gives different labels for separate instances of obj…
Accurate and reliable lane detection is vital for the safe performance of lane-keeping assistance and lane departure warning systems. However, under certain challenging circumstances, it is difficult to get satisfactory performance in accurately detecting the lanes from one single image as mostly done in current literature. Since lane markings are continuous lines, the lanes that are difficult to be accurately detected in the current single image can potentially be better deduced if information from previous frames is incorporated. This study proposes a novel hybrid spatial-temporal (ST) seque…
We present a generalized and scalable method, called Gen-LaneNet, to detect 3D lanes from a single image. The method, inspired by the latest state-of-the-art 3D-LaneNet, is a unified framework solving image encoding, spatial transform of features and 3D lane prediction in a single network. However, we propose unique designs for Gen-LaneNet in two folds. First, we introduce a new geometry-guided lane anchor representation in a new coordinate frame and apply a specific geometric transformation to directly calculate real 3D lane points from the network output. We demonstrate that aligning the lan…
For the self-driving and automatic parking, perception is the basic and critical technique, moreover, the detection of lane markings and parking slots is an important part of visual perception. We propose the DFNet and make two main contributions, one is dynamic loss weights, and the other is residual fusion block (RFB). In this paper, we introduce a brand new dataset to promote the study of instance segmentation for objects with irregular shapes. Our key observation is that though irregularly shaped objects widely exist in daily life and industrial scenarios, they received little attention in the instance segmentation field due to the lack of corresponding datasets. Panoptic segmentation requires segments of both "things" (countable object instances) and "stuff" (uncountable and amorphous regions) within a single output. A common approach involves the fusion of instance segmentation (for "things") and semantic segmentation (for "stuff") into a non-overlapping placement of segments, and resolves overlaps. However, instance ordering with detection confidence do not correlate well with natural occlusion relationship. To resolve this issue, we propose a branch that is tasked with modeling how two instance masks should overlap one another as a binary relation.…

Instance segmentation and panoptic segmentation is being paid more and more attention in recent years. Recent end-to-end video instance segmentation methods are capable of performing object segmentation and instance association together in a direct parallel sequence decoding/prediction framework.
