A {\em special four-cycle } $F$ in a triple system consists of four triples {\em inducing } a $C_4$. This means that $F$ has four special vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and four triples in the form $w_iv_iv_{i+1}$ (indices are understood $\pmod 4$) where the $w_j$s are not necessarily distinct but disjoint from $\{v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4\}$. There are seven non-isomorphic special four-cycles, their family is denoted by $\cal{F}$. Our main result implies that the Turán number $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{F}})=Θ(n^{3/2})$. In fact, we prove more, $\text{ex}(n,\{F_1,F_2,F_3\})=Θ(n^{3/2})$, where the $F_i$-s are specific members of $\cal{F}$. This extends previous bounds for the Turán number of triple systems containing no Berge four cycles.
We also study $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{A}})$ for all ${\cal{A}}\subseteq {\cal{F}}$. For 16 choices of $\cal{A}$ we show that $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{A}})=Θ(n^{3/2})$, for 92 choices of $\cal{A}$ we find that $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{A}})=Θ(n^2)$ and the other 18 cases remain unsolved.
We find the asymptotic value of the Ramsey number for a triple of long cycles, where the lengths of the cycles are large but may have different parity.
A number of applications of Steiner triple systems (e.g. disk erasure codes) exist that require a special ordering of its blocks. Universal cycles, introduced by Chung, Diaconis, and Graham in 1992, and Gray codes are examples of listing elements of a combinatorial family in a specific manner, and Godbole invented the following generalization of these in 2010. 1-overlap cycles require a set of strings to be ordered so that the last letter of one string is the first letter of the next. In this paper, we prove the existence of 1-overlap cycles for automorphism free Steiner triple systems of each…
In 2015, Archdeacon introduced the notion of Heffter arrays and showed the connection between Heffter arrays and biembedding m-cycle and an n-cycle systems on a surface. In this paper we exploit this connection and prove that for every n >= 3 there exists an orientable embedding of the complete graph on 6n+1 vertices with each edge on both a 3-cycle and an $n$-cycle. We also give an analogous (but partial) result for biembedding a 5-cycle system and an n-cycle system.
A new ordering, extending the notion of universal cycles of Chung {\em et al.} (1992), is proposed for the blocks of $k$-uniform set systems. Existence of minimum coverings of pairs by triples that possess such an ordering is established for all orders. Application to the construction of short 2-radius sequences is given, with some new 2-radius sequences found through computer search.
An oriented 3-graph consists of a family of triples (3-sets), each of which is given one of its two possible cyclic orientations. A cycle in an oriented 3-graph is a positive sum of some of the triples that gives weight zero to each 2-set. Our aim in this paper is to consider the following question: how large can the girth of an oriented 3-graph (on $n$ vertices) be? We show that there exist oriented 3-graphs whose shortest cycle has length $\frac{n^2}{2}(1+o(1))$: this is asymptotically best possible. We also show that there exist 3-tournaments whose shortest cycle has length $\frac{n^2}{3}(1…
A very old problem in campanology is the search for peals. The latter can be thought of as a heavily constrained sequence of all possible permutations of a given size, where the exact nature of the constraints depends on which method of ringing is desired. In particular, we consider the methods of bobs-only Stedman Triples and Erin Triples; the existence of the latter is still an open problem. We show that this problem can be viewed as a similarly constrained form of the Hamiltonian cycle problem (HCP). Through the use of special subgraphs, we convert this to a standard instance of HCP. The or…
A Berge-$K_4$ in a triple system is a configuration with four vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and six distinct triples $\{e_{ij}: 1\le i< j \le 4\}$ such that $\{v_i,v_j\}\subset e_{ij}$ for every $1\le i<j\le 4$. We denote by $\cal{B}$ the set of Berge-$K_4$ configurations. A triple system is $\cal{B}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\cal{B}$. We prove that the maximum number of triples in a $\cal{B}$-free triple system on $n\ge 6$ points is obtained by the balanced complete $3$-partite triple system: all triples $\{abc: a\in A, b\in B, c\in C\}$ where $A,B,C$ is a partition of $n$ poin…
In this paper we study Turán and Ramsey numbers in linear triple systems, defined as $3$-uniform hypergraphs in which any two triples intersect in at most one vertex. A famous result of Ruzsa and Szemerédi is that for any fixed $c>0$ and large enough $n$ the following Turán-type theorem holds. If a linear triple system on $n$ vertices has at least $cn^2$ edges then it contains a {\em triangle}: three pairwise intersecting triples without a common vertex. In this paper we extend this result from triangles to other triple systems, called {\em $s$-configurations}. The main tool is a generalizatio…
If $T$ is an $n$-vertex tournament with a given number of $3$-cycles, what can be said about the number of its $4$-cycles? The most interesting range of this problem is where $T$ is assumed to have $c\cdot n^3$ cyclic triples for some $c>0$ and we seek to minimize the number of $4$-cycles. We conjecture that the (asymptotic) minimizing $T$ is a random blow-up of a constant-sized transitive tournament. Using the method of flag algebras, we derive a lower bound that almost matches the conjectured value. We are able to answer the easier problem of maximizing the number of $4$-cycles. These questi…
An autotopism of a Latin square is a triple $(α,β,γ)$ of permutations such that the Latin square is mapped to itself by permuting its rows by $α$, columns by $β$, and symbols by $γ$. Let $\mathrm{Atp}(n)$ be the set of all autotopisms of Latin squares of order $n$. Whether a triple $(α,β,γ)$ of permutations belongs to $\mathrm{Atp}(n)$ depends only on the cycle structures of $α$, $β$ and $γ$. We establish a number of necessary conditions for $(α,β,γ)$ to be in $\mathrm{Atp}(n)$, and use them to determine $\mathrm{Atp}(n)$ for $n\le17$. For general $n$ we determine if $(α,α,α)\in\mathrm{Atp}(n)…
A graph is outerplanar if it can be embedded in a plane such that all vertices lie on its outer face. The outerplanar Turán number of a given graph $H$, denoted by ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges over all outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices which do not contain a copy of $H$. In this paper, the outerplanar Turán numbers of cycles and paths are completely determined.
In this note we obtain upper bounds on the number of hyperedges in 3-uniform hypergraphs not containing a Berge cycle of given odd length. We improve the bound given by Füredi and Özkahya in 2017. The result follows from a more general theorem. We also obtain some new results for Berge cliques.
For a Hamilton cycle in a rectangular $m \times n$ grid, what is the greatest number of turns that can occur? We give the exact answer in several cases and an answer up to an additive error of $2$ in all other cases. In particular, we give a new proof of the result of Beluhov for the case of a square $n \times n$ grid. Our main method is a surprising link between the problem of 'greatest number of turns' and the problem of 'least number of turns'.
In the random hypergraph H=H(n,p;3) each possible triple appears independently with probability p. A loose Hamilton cycle can be described as a sequence of edges {x_i,y_i,x_{i+1}\} for i=1,2,...,n/2. We prove that there exists an absolute constant K>0 such that if p>K\log n/n^2 then lim_{n->oo 4 |n}}Pr(H(n,p;3) contains a loose Hamilton cycle)=1.
Given $α>0$ and an integer $\ell\geq5$, we prove that every sufficiently large $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices in which every two vertices are contained in at least $αn$ edges contains a copy of $C_\ell^{-}$, a tight cycle on $\ell$ vertices minus one edge. This improves a previous result by Balogh, Clemen, and Lidický.
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte. We establish a connecti…
An edge-colored graph is rainbow if all its edges are colored with distinct colors. For a fixed graph $H$, the rainbow Turán number $\mathrm{ex}^{\ast}(n,H)$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with no rainbow copy of $H$. We study the rainbow Turán number of even cycles, and prove that for every fixed $\varepsilon > 0$, there is a constant $C(\varepsilon)$ such that every properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with at least $C(\varepsilon) n^{1 + \varepsilon}$ edges contains a rainbow cycle of even length at most $2 \lceil \frac{\ln …
The cycle structure of a Latin square autotopism $Θ=(α,β,γ)$ is the triple $(\mathbf{l}_α,\mathbf{l}_β,\mathbf{l}_γ)$, where $\mathbf{l}_δ$ is the cycle structure of $δ$, for all $δ\in\{α,β,γ\}$. In this paper we study some properties of these cycle structures and, as a consequence, we give a classification of all autotopisms of the Latin squares of order up to 11.
For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, the relative Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free subgraph of $H$. In this paper we give lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{F})$ for certain families of hypergraph cycles $\mathcal{F}$ such as Berge cycles and loose cycles. In particular, if $\mathcal{C}_\ell^3$ denotes the set of all $3$-uniform Berge $\ell$-cycles and $H$ is a 3-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$, we prove \[\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{C}_4^{3})\ge Δ^{-3/4-o(1)}e(H),\] …
The Turán number of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, denoted by $e{x_k}\left({n;H} \right)$, is the maximum number of edges in any $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ on $n$ vertices which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}^{\left(k \right)}$ denote the family of all $k$-uniform minimal cycles of length $\ell$, $\mathcal{S}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_r)$ denote the family of hypergraphs consisting of unions of $r$ vertex disjoint minimal cycles of length $\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_r$, respectively, and $\mathbb{C}_{\ell}^{\left(k \right)}$ denote a $k$-uniform linear cycle of length $\ell$. We d…
Any permutation polynomial is an $ n $-cycle permutation. When $n$ is a specific small positive integer, one can obtain efficient permutations, such as involutions, triple-cycle permutations and quadruple-cycle permutations. These permutations have important applications in cryptography and coding theory. Inspired by the AGW Criterion, we propose criteria for $ n $-cycle permutations, which mainly are of the form $ x^rh(x^s) $. We then propose unified constructing methods including recursive ways and a cyclotomic way for $ n $-cycle permutations of such form. We demonstrate our approaches by c…
The planar Turan number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(C_{\ell},n)$ is the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph with no $\ell$-cycle. For $\ell\in \{3,4,5,6\}$, upper bounds on $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(C_{\ell},n)$ are known that hold with equality infinitely often. Ghosh, Györi, Martin, Paulo, and Xiao [arxiv:2004.14094] conjectured an upper bound on $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(C_{\ell},n)$ for every $\ell\ge 7$ and $n$ sufficiently large. We disprove this conjecture for every $\ell\ge 11$. We also propose two revised versions of the conjecture.
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. This notion was introduced by Dowden in 2016 and has attracted quite some attention since then; those work mainly focus on finding $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cycle or Theta graph or $H$ has maximum degree at least four. In this paper, we study $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cubic graph or disjoint union of cycles or $H=K_{s, t}$.
A classical result of Bondy and Simonovits in extremal graph theory states that if a graph on $n$ vertices contains no cycle of length $2k$ then it has at most $O(n^{1+1/k})$ edges. However, matching lower bounds are only known for $k=2,3,5$. In this paper we study ordered variants of this problem and prove some tight estimates for a certain class of ordered cycles that we call bordered cycles. In particular, we show that the maximum number of edges in an ordered graph avoiding bordered cycles of length at most $2k$ is $Θ(n^{1+1/k})$. Strengthening the result of Bondy and Simonovits in the cas…
Given an $(r+1)$-chromatic graph $F$ and a graph $H$ that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph, we say that $H$ is strictly $F$-Turán-good if the Turán graph $T_{r}(n)$ is the unique graph containing the maximum number of copies of $H$ among all $F$-free graphs on $n$ vertices for every $n$ large enough. Győri, Pach and Simonovits (1991) proved that cycle $C_4$ of length four is strictly $K_{r+1}$-Turán-good for all $r\geq 2$. In this article, we extend this result and show that $C_4$ is strictly $F$-Turán-good, where $F$ is an $(r+1)$-chromatic graph with $r\ge 2$ and a color-critical edge. Mor…
We study sufficient conditions for Hamiltonian cycles in hypergraphs, and obtain both Turán- and Dirac-type results. While the Turán-type result gives an exact threshold for the appearance of a Hamiltonian cycle in a hypergraph depending only on the extremal number of a certain path, the Dirac-type result yields a sufficient condition relying solely on the minimum vertex degree.

Let $k \ge 2$ be an integer. We show that if $s = 2$ and $t \ge 2$, or $s = t = 3$, then the maximum possible number of edges in a $C_{2k+1}$-free graph containing no induced copy of $K_{s,t}$ is asymptotically equal to $(t - s + 1)^{1/s}\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{2-1/s}$ except when $k = s = t = 2$. This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte and answers a question of Loh, Tait and Timmons.
The rainbow Turán number $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We prove that for any integer $k\geq 2$, $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This is tight and establishes a conjecture of Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We use the same method to prove several other conjectures in various topics. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn(\log n)^4$ edges contains a rainbow cycle. …
Given $r$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$ the Turán number $\rm ex(G, H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. We study the typical value of $\rm ex(G, H)$ when $G=G_{n,p}^{(r)}$, the Erdős-Rényi random $r$-uniform hypergraph, and $H=C_{2\ell}^{(r)}$, the $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $2\ell$. The case of graphs ($r=2$) is a longstanding open problem that has been investigated by many researchers. We determine $\rm ex(G_{n,p}^{(r)}, C_{2\ell}^{(r)})$ up to polylogarithmic factors for all but a small interval of values of $p=p(n)$ whose length decreases as $\ell$ …
In the early 1980s, Erdős and Sós initiated the study of the classical Turán problem with a uniformity condition: the uniform Turán density of a hypergraph $H$ is the infimum over all $d$ for which any sufficiently large hypergraph with the property that all its linear-size subhyperghraphs have density at least $d$ contains $H$. In particular, they raise the questions of determining the uniform Turán densities of $K_4^{(3)-}$ and $K_4^{(3)}$. The former question was solved only recently in [Israel J. Math. 211 (2016), 349-366] and [J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 1139-1159], while the latter sti…

A k-uniform linear cycle of length s is a cyclic list of k-sets A_1,..., A_s such that consecutive sets intersect in exactly one element and nonconsecutive sets are disjoint. For all k at least 5 and s at least 3 and sufficiently large n we determine the largest size of a k-uniform set family on [n] not containing a linear cycle of length s. For odd s=2t+1 the unique extremal family F_S consists of all k-sets in [n] intersecting a fixed t-set S in [n]. For even s=2t+2, the unique extremal family consists of F_S plus all the k-sets outside S containing some fixed two elements. For k at least 4 …
Let the bipartite Turán number $ex(m,n,H)$ of a graph $H$ be the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free bipartite graph with two parts of sizes $m$ and $n$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that $ex(m,n,C_{2t})=(t-1)n+m-t+1$ for any positive integers $m,n,t$ with $n\geq m\geq t\geq \frac{m}{2}+1$. This confirms the rest of a conjecture of Györi \cite{G97} (in a stronger form), and improves the upper bound of $ex(m,n,C_{2t})$ obtained by Jiang and Ma \cite{JM18} for this range. We also prove a tight edge condition for consecutive even cycles in bipartite graphs, which settles a conjecture …
Given graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized rainbow Turán number $\text{ex}(n,F,\text{rainbow-}H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with a proper edge-coloring that contains no rainbow copy of $H$. B. Janzer determined the order of magnitude of $\text{ex}(n,C_s,\text{rainbow-}C_t)$ for all $s\geq 4$ and $t\geq 3$, and a recent result of O. Janzer implied that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. We prove the corresponding upper bound for the remaining cases, showing that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k+1})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This matches the known…
An $r$-uniform hypergraph is called an $r$-graph. A hypergraph is linear if every two edges intersect in at most one vertex. Given a linear $r$-graph $H$ and a positive integer $n$, the linear Turán number $ex_L(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in a linear $r$-graph $G$ that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. For each $\ell\geq 3$, let $C^r_\ell$ denote the $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $\ell$, which is an $r$-graph with edges $e_1,\ldots, e_\ell$ such that $\forall i\in [\ell-1]$, $|e_i\cap e_{i+1}|=1$, $|e_\ell\cap e_1|=1$ and $e_i\cap e_j=\emptyset$ for all other pairs $\{i,j\}, i…
