In this note we obtain upper bounds on the number of hyperedges in 3-uniform hypergraphs not containing a Berge cycle of given odd length. We improve the bound given by Füredi and Özkahya in 2017. The result follows from a more general theorem. We also obtain some new results for Berge cliques.
We consider the class of Berge graphs that contain no odd prism and no square (cycle on four vertices). We prove that every graph G in this class either is a clique or has an even pair, as conjectured by Everett and Reed. This result is used to devise a polynomial-time algorithm to color optimally every graph in this class.
A graph is Berge if it has no induced odd cycle on at least 5 vertices and no complement of induced odd cycle on at least 5 vertices. A graph is perfect if the chromatic number equals the maximum clique number for every induced subgraph. Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that every Berge graph either falls into some classical family of perfect graphs, or has a structural fault that cannot occur in a minimal imperfect graph. A corollary of this is the strong perfect graph theorem conjectured by Berge: every Berge graph is perfect. An even pair of vertices in a graph is a pair of …

Given a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ and a graph $G$, we say that $\mathcal{H}$ is a \textit{Berge}-$G$ if there is a bijection between the hyperedges of $\mathcal{H}$ and the edges of $G$ such that each hyperedge contains its image. We denote by $ex_k(n,\text{Berge-}F)$ the largest number of hyperedges in a $k$-uniform Berge-$F$-free graph. Let $ex(n,H,F)$ denote the largest number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. It is known that $ex(n,K_k,F)\le ex_k(n,\text{Berge-}F)\le ex(n,K_k,F)+ex(n,F)$, thus if $χ(F)>r$, then $ex_k(n,\text{Berge-}F)=(1+o(1)) ex(n,K_k,F)$. We conjecture that …
For a fixed set of positive integers $R$, we say $\mathcal{H}$ is an $R$-uniform hypergraph, or $R$-graph, if the cardinality of each edge belongs to $R$. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Berge-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists a bijection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. In this paper, we define a variant of Turán number in hypergraphs, namely the cover Turán number, denoted as $\hat{ex}_R(n, G)$, as the maximum number of edges in the shadow graph of a Berge-$G$ free $R$-graph on $n$ vertices. We show a general…
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ is a {\it Berge}-$F$ if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(H )$ such that $e \subseteq f(e)$ for every $e \in E(F)$. Note that Berge-$F$ actually denotes a class of hypergraphs. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with no subhypergraph isomorphic to any Berge-$F$ is denoted $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$. In this paper we establish new upper and lower bounds on $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ for general graphs $F$, and investigate connections between $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ and other recently studied extremal functions…
For a graph $F$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a Berge copy of $F$ (or a Berge-$F$ in short), if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for each $e \in E(F)$ we have $e \subset f(e)$. A hypergraph is Berge-$F$-free if it does not contain a Berge copy of $F$. We denote the maximum number of hyperedges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform Berge-$F$-free hypergraph by $\mathrm{ex}_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F).$ In this paper we prove two general lemmas concerning the maximum size of a Berge-$F$-free hypergraph and use them to establish new results and improve several old results. I…
A classical conjecture of Erdős and Sós asks to determine the Turán number of a tree. We consider variants of this problem in the settings of hypergraphs and multi-hypergraphs. In particular, for all $k$ and $r$, with $r \ge k (k-2)$, we show that any $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with more than $\frac{n(k-1)}{r+1}$ hyperedges contains a Berge copy of any tree with $k$ edges different from the $k$-edge star. This bound is sharp when $r+1$ divides $n$ and for such values of $n$ we determine the extremal hypergraphs.
We consider the class of graphs containing no odd hole, no odd antihole, and no configuration consisting of three paths between two nodes such that any two of the paths induce a hole, and at least two of the paths are of length 2. This class generalizes claw-free Berge graphs and square-free Berge graphs. We give a combinatorial algorithm of complexity $O(n^{7})$ to find a clique of maximum weight in such a graph. We also consider several subgraph-detection problems related to this class.
Given a graph $G$, a Berge copy of $G$ is a hypergraph obtained by enlarging the edges arbitrarily. Gy\H ori in 2006 showed that for $r=3$ or $r=4$, an $r$-uniform $n$-vertex Berge triangle-free hypergraph has at most $\lfloor n^2/8(r-2)\rfloor$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough, and this bound is sharp. The book graph $B_t$ consists of $t$ triangles sharing an edge. Very recently, Ghosh, Győri, Nagy-György, Paulos, Xiao and Zamora showed that a 3-uniform $n$-vertex Berge $B_t$-free hypergraph has at most $n^2/8+o(n^2)$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough. They conjectured that this bound can be…
In many proofs concerning extremal parameters of Berge hypergraphs one starts with analyzing that part of that shadow graph which is contained in many hyperedges. Capturing this phenomenon we introduce two new types of hypergraphs. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a $t$-heavy copy of a graph $F$ if there is a copy of $F$ on its vertex set such that each edge of $F$ is contained in at least $t$ hyperedges of $\mathcal{H}$. $\mathcal{H}$ is a $t$-wise Berge copy of $F$ if additionally for distinct edges of $F$ those $t$ hyperedges are distinct. We extend known upper bounds on the Turán number of Be…
Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-graphs, the Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ for a given positive integer $N$, denoted by $ex(N,\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of edges of an $r$-graph on $N$ vertices that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. For given $r\geq 3$, a complete $r$-uniform Berge-hypergraph, denoted by { ${K}_n^{(r)}$}, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ with the core sequence $v_{1}, v_{2}, \ldots ,v_{n}$ as the vertices and distinct edges $e_{ij},$ $1\leq i<j\leq n,$ where every $e_{ij}$ contains both $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$. Let $\mathcal{F}^{(r)}…
Let $F$ be a graph. A hypergraph is called Berge-$F$ if it can be obtained by replacing each edge of $F$ by a hyperedge containing it. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number of Berge-$\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no Berge-$F$ as a subhypergraph (for every $F \in \mathcal{F}$) and is denoted by $ex_r(n,\mathcal{F})$. We determine the asymptotics for the Turán number of Berge-$K_{2,t}$ by showing $$ex_3(n,K_{2,t})=\frac{1}{6}(t-1)^{3/2} \cdot n^{3/2}(1+o(1))$$ for any given $t \ge 7$. We study the …
A Berge-$K_4$ in a triple system is a configuration with four vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and six distinct triples $\{e_{ij}: 1\le i< j \le 4\}$ such that $\{v_i,v_j\}\subset e_{ij}$ for every $1\le i<j\le 4$. We denote by $\cal{B}$ the set of Berge-$K_4$ configurations. A triple system is $\cal{B}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\cal{B}$. We prove that the maximum number of triples in a $\cal{B}$-free triple system on $n\ge 6$ points is obtained by the balanced complete $3$-partite triple system: all triples $\{abc: a\in A, b\in B, c\in C\}$ where $A,B,C$ is a partition of $n$ poin…
Let $D$ be a digraph. A stable set $S$ of $D$ and a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ are orthogonal if every path $P \in \mathcal{P}$ contains exactly one vertex of $S$. In 1982, Berge defined the class of $α$-diperfect digraphs. A digraph $D$ is $α$-diperfect if for every maximum stable set $S$ of $D$ there is a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ orthogonal to $S$ and this property holds for every induced subdigraph of $D$. An anti-directed odd cycle is an orientation of an odd cycle $(x_0,\ldots,x_{2k},x_0)$ with $k\geq2$ in which each vertex $x_0,x_1,x_2,x_3,x_5,x_7\ldots,x_{2k-1}$ is e…
Fix a hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a {\it Berge copy of $\mathcal{F}$} or {\it Berge-$\mathcal{F}$} if we can choose a subset of each hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$ to obtain a copy of $\mathcal{F}$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is {\it Berge-$\mathcal{F}$-free} if it does not contain a subhypergraph which is Berge copy of $\mathcal{F}$. This is a generalization of the usual, graph based Berge hypergraphs, where $\mathcal{F}$ is a graph. In this paper, we study extremal properties of hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs and generalize several results from the graph ba…
For a graph G=(V,E), a hypergraph H is called Berge-G if there is a bijection f from E(G) to E(H) such that for each e in E(G), e is a subset of f(e). The set of all Berge-G hypergraphs is denoted B(G). For integers k>1, r>1, and a graph G, let the Ramsey number R_r(B(G), k) be the smallest integer n such that no matter how the edges of a complete r-uniform n-vertex hypergraph are colored with k colors, there is a copy of a monochromatic Berge-G subhypergraph. Furthermore, let R(B(G),k) be the smallest integer n such that no matter how all subsets an n-element set are colored with k colors, th…
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ contains an induced Berge $F$ if the vertices of $F$ can be embedded to $H$ (e.g., $V(F)\subseteq V(H)$) and there exists an injective mapping $f$ from the edges of $F$ to the hyperedges of $H$ such that $f(xy) \cap V(F) = \{x,y\}$ holds for each edge $xy$ of $F$. In other words, $H$ contains $F$ as a trace. Let $ex_{r}(n,B_{ind} F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with no induced Berge $F$. Let $ex(n,K_r, F)$ denote the maximum number of $K_r$'s in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We show that these two Turán t…
Let $G$ be a bridgeless cubic graph. The Berge--Fulkerson Conjecture (1970s) states that $G$ admits a list of six perfect matchings such that each edge of $G$ belongs to exactly two of these perfect matchings. If answered in the affirmative, two other recent conjectures would also be true: the Fan--Raspaud Conjecture (1994), which states that $G$ admits three perfect matchings such that every edge of $G$ belongs to at most two of them; and a conjecture by Mazzuoccolo (2013), which states that $G$ admits two perfect matchings whose deletion yields a bipartite subgraph of $G$. It can be shown th…
For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, the relative Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free subgraph of $H$. In this paper we give lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{F})$ for certain families of hypergraph cycles $\mathcal{F}$ such as Berge cycles and loose cycles. In particular, if $\mathcal{C}_\ell^3$ denotes the set of all $3$-uniform Berge $\ell$-cycles and $H$ is a 3-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$, we prove \[\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{C}_4^{3})\ge Δ^{-3/4-o(1)}e(H),\] …
In this paper, we develop a method for studying cycle lengths in hypergraphs. Our method is built on earlier ones used in [21,22,18]. However, instead of utilizing the well-known lemma of Bondy and Simonovits [4] that most existing methods do, we develop a new and very simple lemma in its place. One useful feature of the new lemma is its adaptiveness for the hypergraph setting. Using this new method, we prove a conjecture of Verstraëte [37] that for $r\ge 3$, every $r$-uniform hypergraph with average degree $Ω(k^{r-1})$ contains Berge cycles of $k$ consecutive lengths. This is sharp up to the …
The anti-Ramsey problem was introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1970s. The anti-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, $ar(n,s, \mathcal{H})$, is the smallest integer $c$ such that in any coloring of the edges of the $s$-uniform complete hypergraph on $n$ vertices with exactly $c$ colors, there is a copy of $\mathcal{H}$ whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers of linear paths and loose paths in hypergraphs for sufficiently large $n$, and give bounds for the anti-Ramsey numbers of Berge paths. Similar exact anti-Ramsey numbers are obtai…
The Turán number $ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $T$ be any tree. The odd-ballooning of $T$, denoted by $T_o$, is a graph obtained by replacing each edge of $T$ with an odd cycle containing the edge, and all new vertices of the odd cycles are distinct. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,T_o)$ for sufficiently large $n$ and $T_o$ being good, which generalizes all the known results on $ex(n,T_o)$ for $T$ being a star, due to Erdős et al. (1995), Hou et al. (2018) and Yuan (2018), and provides some counterexamples with chromatic…
Given graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized rainbow Turán number $\text{ex}(n,F,\text{rainbow-}H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with a proper edge-coloring that contains no rainbow copy of $H$. B. Janzer determined the order of magnitude of $\text{ex}(n,C_s,\text{rainbow-}C_t)$ for all $s\geq 4$ and $t\geq 3$, and a recent result of O. Janzer implied that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. We prove the corresponding upper bound for the remaining cases, showing that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k+1})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This matches the known…

Let $k \ge 2$ be an integer. We show that if $s = 2$ and $t \ge 2$, or $s = t = 3$, then the maximum possible number of edges in a $C_{2k+1}$-free graph containing no induced copy of $K_{s,t}$ is asymptotically equal to $(t - s + 1)^{1/s}\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{2-1/s}$ except when $k = s = t = 2$. This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte and answers a question of Loh, Tait and Timmons.
Every character on a graded connected Hopf algebra decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character (Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile, math.CO/0310016). We obtain explicit formulas for the even and odd parts of the universal character on the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. They can be described in terms of Legendre's beta function evaluated at half-integers, or in terms of bivariate Catalan numbers: $$ C(m,n)=\frac{(2m)!(2n)!}{m!(m+n)!n!}. $$ Properties of characters and of quasi-symmetric functions are then used to derive several interesting identities among …
Given a graph $H$ and a function $f:\mathbb{Z}^+ \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+ $, the Ramsey-Turán number of $H$ and $f$, denoted by $RT(n, H, f(n))$, is the maximum number of edges a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can have, which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph and also does not contain a set of $f(n)$ independent vertices. Let $r$ be a positive integer. In 1969, Erdős and Sós proved that $RT(n,K_{2r+1},o(n))=\frac{n^2}{2}(1-\frac{1}{r})+o(n^2)$. Let $F_k(2r+1)$ denote the graph consisting of $k$ copies of complete graphs $K_{2r+1}$ sharing exactly one vertex. In this paper, we show that $RT(n,F…
An "odd-rule" cellular automaton (CA) is defined by specifying a neighborhood for each cell, with the rule that a cell turns ON if it is in the neighborhood of an odd number of ON cells at the previous generation, and otherwise turns OFF. We classify all the odd-rule CAs defined by neighborhoods which are subsets of a 3 X 3 grid of square cells. There are 86 different CAs modulo trivial symmetries. When we consider only the different sequences giving the number of ON cells after n generations, the number drops to 48, two of which are the Moore and von Neumann CAs. This classification is carrie…
For an odd integer $k$, let $\mathcal{C}_k = \{C_3,C_5,...,C_k\}$ denote the family of all odd cycles of length at most $k$ and let $\mathcal{C}$ denote the family of all odd cycles. Erdős and Simonovits \cite{ESi1} conjectured that for every family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs, there exists $k$ such that $\ex{n}{\mathcal{F} \cup \mathcal{C}_k} \sim \ex{n}{\mathcal{F} \cup \mathcal{C}}$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. This conjecture was proved by Erdős and Simonovits when $\mathcal{F} = \{C_4\}$, and for certain families of even cycles in \cite{KSV}. In this paper, we give a general approach …
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte. We establish a connecti…
An extremal graph for a given graph $H$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $s,t$ be integers and let $H_{s,t}$ be a graph consisting of $s$ triangles and $t$ cycles of odd lengths at least 5 which intersect in exactly one common vertex. Erdős et al. (1995) determined the extremal graphs for $H_{s,0}$. Recently, Hou et al. (2016) determined the extremal graphs for $H_{0,t}$, where the $t$ cycles have the same odd length $q$ with $q\ge 5$. In this paper, we further determine the extremal graphs for $H_{s,t}$ with $s\ge 0$ and $t\g…
An extremal graph for a graph $H$ on $n$ vertices is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $T_{n,r}$ be the Turán graph, which is the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices with part sizes that differ by at most one. The well-known Turán Theorem states that $T_{n,r}$ is the only extremal graph for complete graph $K_{r+1}$. Erdös et al. (1995) determined the extremal graphs for intersecting triangles and Chen et al. (2003) determined the maximum number of edges of the extremal graphs for intersecting cliques. In this paper, we dete…
We prove that for each odd integer $k \geq 7$, every graph on $n$ vertices without odd cycles of length less than $k$ contains at most $(n/k)^k$ cycles of length $k$. This generalizes the previous results on the maximum number of pentagons in triangle-free graphs, conjectured by Erdős in 1984, and asymptotically determines the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,C_k,C_{k-2})$ for odd $k$. In contrary to the previous results on the pentagon case, our proof is not computer-assisted.
A {\em special four-cycle } $F$ in a triple system consists of four triples {\em inducing } a $C_4$. This means that $F$ has four special vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and four triples in the form $w_iv_iv_{i+1}$ (indices are understood $\pmod 4$) where the $w_j$s are not necessarily distinct but disjoint from $\{v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4\}$. There are seven non-isomorphic special four-cycles, their family is denoted by $\cal{F}$. Our main result implies that the Turán number $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{F}})=Θ(n^{3/2})$. In fact, we prove more, $\text{ex}(n,\{F_1,F_2,F_3\})=Θ(n^{3/2})$, where the $F_i$-s are specif…
In this work, we give the sharp upper bound for the number of cliques in graphs with bounded odd circumferences. This generalized Turán-type result is an extension of the celebrated Erdős and Gallai theorem and a strengthening of Luo's recent result. The same bound for graphs with bounded even circumferences is a trivial application of the theorem of Li and Ning.
We consider extremal problems for subgraphs of pseudorandom graphs. For graphs $F$ and $Γ$ the generalized Turán density $π_F(Γ)$ denotes the density of a maximum subgraph of $Γ$, which contains no copy of~$F$. Extending classical Turán type results for odd cycles, we show that $π_{F}(Γ)=1/2$ provided $F$ is an odd cycle and $Γ$ is a sufficiently pseudorandom graph. In particular, for $(n,d,λ)$-graphs $Γ$, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$, our result holds for odd cycles of length $\ell$, provided \[ λ^{\ell-2}\ll \frac{d^{\ell-1}}n…
We give an upper bound for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex 2-connected $r$-uniform hypergraph with no Berge cycle of length $k$ or greater, where $n\geq k \geq 4r\geq 12$. For $n$ large with respect to $r$ and $k$, this bound is sharp and is significantly stronger than the bound without restrictions on connectivity. It turned out that it is simpler to prove the bound for the broader class of Sperner families where the size of each set is at most $r$. For such families, our bound is sharp for all $n\geq k\geq r\geq 3$.
