We study fine global properties of nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy Problem for the fast $p$-Laplacian evolution equation $u_t=Δ_p u$ on the whole Euclidean space, in the so-called "good fast diffusion range" $\tfrac{2N}{N+1}<p<2$. It is well-known that non-negative solutions behave for large times as $\mathcal{B}$, the Barenblatt (or fundamental) solution, which has an explicit expression.
We prove the so-called Global Harnack Principle (GHP), that is, precise global pointwise upper and lower estimates of nonnegative solutions in terms of $\mathcal{B}$. This can be considered the nonlinear counterpart of the celebrated Gaussian estimates for the linear heat equation.
We characterize the maximal (hence optimal) class of initial data such that the GHP holds, by means of an integral tail condition, easy to check. The GHP is then used as a tool to analyze the fine asymptotic behavior for large times. For initial data that satisfy the same integral condition, we prove that the corresponding solutions behave like the Barenblatt with the same mass, uniformly in relative error.
When the integral tail condition is not satisfied we show that both the GHP and the uniform convergence in relative error, do not hold anymore, and we provide also explicit counterexamples. We then prove a "generalized GHP", that is, pointwise upper and lower bounds in terms of explicit profiles with a tail different from $\mathcal{B}$. Finally, we derive sharp global quantitative upper bounds of the modulus of the gradient of the solution, and, when data are radially decreasing, we show uniform convergence in relative error for the gradients.
To the best of our knowledge, analogous issues for the linear heat equation $p=2$, do not possess such clear answers, only partial results are known.
We study viscosity solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic equations of $p$-Laplacian type on Riemannian manifolds. The Krylov-Safonov type Harnack inequality for the $p$-Laplacian operators with $1<p<\infty$ is established on the manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below based on ABP type estimates. We also prove the Harnack inequality for nonlinear $p$-Laplacian type operators assuming that a nonlinear perturbation of Ricci curvature is bounded below.
In this paper we prove an invariant Harnack inequality on Carnot-Carathéodory balls for fractional powers of sub-Laplacians in Carnot groups. The proof relies on an "abstract" formulation of a technique recently introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre. In addition, we write explicitly the Poisson kernel for a class of degenerate subelliptic equations in product-type Carnot groups.
Under the lack of variational structure and nondegeneracy, we investigate three notions of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} for a general infinity Laplacian operator with gradient and homogeneous term. A Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack inequality are proved to support our analysis. This is a continuation of our first work [3] and a contribution in the development of the theory of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} beside the works [8, 13, 12, 9, 29]. We use these notions to characterize the validity of maximum principle and study the existence, nonexistence and uniquene…
We investigate various boundary decay estimates for $p(\cdot)$-harmonic functions. For domains in $\mathbb{R}^n, n\geq 2$ satisfying the ball condition ($C^{1,1}$-domains) we show the boundary Harnack inequality for $p(\cdot)$-harmonic functions under the assumption that the variable exponent $p$ is a bounded Lipschitz function. The proof involves barrier functions and chaining arguments. Moreover, we prove a Carleson type estimate for $p(\cdot)$-harmonic functions in NTA domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and provide lower- and upper- growth estimates and a doubling property for a $p(\cdot)$-harmonic …
We state and prove a general Harnack inequality for minimizers of nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators, whose model is the fractional p-Laplacian.
We study qualitative and quantitative properties of local weak solutions of the fast $p$-Laplacian equation, $\partial_t u=Δ_{p}u$, with $1<p<2$. Our main results are quantitative positivity and boundedness estimates for locally defined solutions in domains of $\RR^n\times [0,T]$. We combine these lower and upper bounds in different forms of intrinsic Harnack inequalities, which are new in the very fast diffusion range, that is when $1<p \le 2n/(n+1)$. The boundedness results may be also extended to the limit case $p=1$, while the positivity estimates cannot. We prove the existence as well as …
We study regularity of the Finsler $γ$-Laplacian, a general class of degenerate elliptic PDEs which naturally appear in anisotropic geometric problems. Precisely, given any strictly convex family of $C^{1}$-norms $\{ ρ_{x}\}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and $γ> 1$, we consider the $W^{1,γ}(Ω)$ solutions of the anisotropic PDE $$ \displaystyle \int_Ω \left \langle ρ_{x}(Du)^{γ-1} (D ρ_{x})(Du), D φ\right \rangle = \int_Ω \vec{F} \cdot D φ+ f φ\qquad \forall φ\in W^{1,γ^{\prime}}_{0}(Ω). $$ Under the mild assumption $|ξ|^{-1} ρ_{x}( ξ) \in [ν, Λ]$ for all $(x,ξ) \in Ω\times \mathbb{R}^{n}$ and some $0 <…
We consider a class of generalized nonlocal $p$-Laplacian equations. We find some proper structural conditions to establish a version of nonlocal Harnack inequalities of weak solutions to such nonlocal problems by using the expansion of positivity and energy estimates.
This paper introduces certain elliptic Harnack inequalities for harmonic functions in the setting of the product space $M \times X$, where $M$ is a (weighted) Riemannian Manifold and $X$ is a countable graph. Since some standard arguments for the elliptic case fail in this "mixed" setting, we adapt ideas introduced by Thierry Delmotte for the discrete parabolic case. We then present some useful applications of this inequality, namely, a kernel estimate for functions of the Laplacian on a graph. This application in turn provides sharp estimates for certain Markov kernels on graphs. We then clos…
We consider operators of the form $L u(x) = \sum_{y \in \mathbb{Z}} k(x-y) \big( u(y) - u(x)\big)$ on the one-dimensional lattice with symmetric, integrable kernel $k$. We prove several results stating that under certain conditions on the kernel the operator $L$ satisfies the curvature-dimension condition $CD_Υ(0,F)$ (recently introduced by two of the authors) with some $CD$-function $F$, where attention is also paid to the asymptotic properties of $F$ (exponential growth at infinity and power-type behaviour near zero). We show that $CD_Υ(0,F)$ implies a Li-Yau inequality for positive solution…
We prove the uniqueness for viscosity solutions of a differential equation involving the infinity-Laplacian with a variable exponent. A version of the Harnack's inequality is derived for this minimax problem.

We consider the Cauchy problem for heat equation with fractional Laplacian and exponential nonlinearity. We establish local well-posedness result in Orlicz spaces. We derive the existence of global solutions for small initial data. We obtain decay estimates for large time in Lebesgue spaces.
We prove a higher regularity result for the free boundary in the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian via a higher order boundary Harnack inequality.
We prove a Harnack inequality for distributional solutions to a type of degenerate elliptic PDEs in $N$ dimensions. The differential operators in question are related to the Kolmogorov operator, made up of the Laplacian in the last $N-1$ variables, a first-order term corresponding to a shear flow in the direction of the first variable, and a bounded measurable potential term. The first-order coefficient is a smooth function of the last $N-1$ variables and its derivatives up to certain order do not vanish simultaneously at any point, making the operators in question hypoelliptic.
On a Riemannian metric-measure space, we establish an Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci type measure estimate connecting Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature lower bound, modified Laplacian and the measure of certain special sets. We apply this estimate to prove Harnack inequalities for the modified Laplacian operator and fully non-linear operators. These inequalities seem not available in the literature; And our proof, solely based on the ABP estimate, does not involve any Sobolev inequalities nor gradient estimate. We also propose a question regarding the characterization of Ricci lower bound by the Harnack …
In this note we consider problems related to parabolic partial differential equations in geodesic metric measure spaces, that are equipped with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. We prove a location and scale invariant Harnack inequality for a minimizer of a variational problem related to a doubly non-linear parabolic equation involving the p-Laplacian. Moreover, we prove the sufficiency of the Grigor'yan--Saloff-Coste theorem for general p > 1 in geodesic metric spaces. The approach used is strictly variational, and hence we are able to carry out the argument in the metric setting.
Let $u$ be a non-negative super-solution to a $1$-dimensional singular parabolic equation of $p$-Laplacian type ($1<p<2$). If $u$ is bounded below on a time-segment $\{y\}\times(0,T]$ by a positive number $M$, then it has a power-like decay of order $\frac p{2-p}$ with respect to the space variable $x$ in $\mathbb R\times[T/2,T]$. This fact, stated quantitatively in Proposition 1.1, is a "sidewise spreading of positivity" of solutions to such singular equations, and can be considered as a form of Harnack inequality. The proof of such an effect is based on geometrical ideas.
We study the Cauchy problem for the parabolic infinity Laplace equation. We prove a new comparison principle and obtain uniqueness of viscosity solutions in the class of functions with a polinomial growth at infinity, improving previous results obtained assuming a linear growth.
In the present paper, we prove time decay estimates of solutions in weighted Sobolev spaces to the second order evolution equation with fractional Laplacian and damping for data in Besov spaces. Our estimates generalize the estimates obtained in the previous studies. The second aim of this article is to apply these estimates to prove small data global well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the equation with power nonlinearities. Especially, the estimates obtained in this paper enable us to treat more general conditions on the nonlinearities and the spatial dimension than the results in the p…
We establish a Harnack inequality for a class of quasi-linear PDE modeled on the prototype {equation*} \partial_tu= -\sum_{i=1}^{m}X_i^\ast (|\X u|^{p-2} X_i u){equation*} where $p\ge 2$, $ \ \X = (X_1,..., X_m)$ is a system of Lipschitz vector fields defined on a smooth manifold $\M$ endowed with a Borel measure $μ$, and $X_i^*$ denotes the adjoint of $X_i$ with respect to $μ$. Our estimates are derived assuming that (i) the control distance $d$ generated by $\X$ induces the same topology on $\M$; (ii) a doubling condition for the $μ$-measure of $d-$metric balls and (iii) the validity of a Po…
We discuss the optimal regularity and nondegeneracy of a free boundary problem related to the fractional Laplacian. This work is related to, but addresses a different problem from, recent work of Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Sire. A variant of the boundary Harnack inequality is also proved, where it is no longer required that the function be 0 along the boundary.
In this paper we study integro-differential equations like the anisotropic fractional Laplacian. As in [Silvestre, Indiana University Mathematics Journal 55, 2006], we adapt the De Giorgi technique to achieve the $C^γ$-regularity for solutions of class $C^{2}$ and use the geometry found in [Caffarelli, Leitão, and Urbano, Math. Ann. 360, 2014] to get an ABP estimate, a Harnack inequality and the interior $C^{1, γ}$ regularity for viscosity solutions.
In this paper we obtain a Harnack type inequality for solutions to elliptic equations in divergence form with non-standard $p(x)-$type growth. A model equation is the inhomogeneous $p(x)-$laplacian. Namely, \[ Δ_{p(x)}u:=\mbox{div}\big(|\nabla u|^{p(x)-2}\nabla u\big)=f(x)\quad\mbox{in}\quadΩ\] for which we prove Harnack inequality when $f\in L^{q_0}(Ω)$ if $\max\{1,\frac N{p_{min}}\}<q_0\le \infty$. The constant in Harnack inequality depends on $u$ only through $\||u|^{p(x)}\|_{L^1(Ω)}^{p_{max}-p_{min}}$. Dependence of the constant on $u$ is known to be necessary in the case of variable $p(x)…
We consider a quasilinear equation involving the $n-$Laplacian and an exponential nonlinearity, a problem that includes the celebrated Liouville equation in the plane as a special case. For a non-compact sequence of solutions it is known that the exponential nonlinearity converges, up to a subsequence, to a sum of Dirac measures. By performing a precise local asymptotic analysis we complete such a result by showing that the corresponding Dirac masses are quantized as multiples of a given one, related to the mass of limiting profiles after rescaling according to the classification result obtain…
In this paper we study the gradient estimate for positive solutions of Schrodinger equations on locally finite graph. Then we derive Harnack's inequality for positive solutions of the Schrodinger equations. We also set up some results about Green functions of the Laplacian equation on locally finite graph. Interesting properties of Schrodinger equation are derived.

The fractional Laplacian can be obtained as a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map via an extension problem to the upper half space. In this paper we prove the same type of characterization for the fractional powers of second order partial differential operators in some class. We also get a Poisson formula and a system of Cauchy-Riemann equations for the extension. The method is applied to the fractional harmonic oscillator $H^σ=(-Δ+|x|^2)^σ$ to deduce a Harnack's inequality. A pointwise formula for $H^σf(x)$ and some maximum and comparison principles are derived.
This article presents new local and global gradient estimates of Li-Yau type for positive solutions to a class of nonlinear elliptic equations on smooth metric measure spaces involving the Witten Laplacian. The estimates are derived under natural lower bounds on the associated Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature tensor and find utility in proving general Harnack inequalities and Liouville-type theorems to mention a few. The results here unify, extend and improve various existing results in the literature for special nonlinearities already of huge interest and applications. Some important consequences …
We consider a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for some elliptic equations governed by general operators including the $p$-Laplacian. The natural framework in which we consider such equations is that of Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. we exhibit two positive constants $λ_{0}$ and $λ_{1}$ with $λ_{0}\leqλ_{1}$ such that $λ_1$ is an eigenvalue of the problem while any value $λ<λ_{0}$ cannot be so. By means of Harnack-type inequalities and a strong maximum principle, we prove the isolation of $λ_{1}$ on the right side. We emphasize that throughout the paper no $Δ_2$-condition is needed.
We prove interior Harnack's inequalities for solutions of fractional nonlocal equations. Our examples include fractional powers of divergence form elliptic operators with potentials, operators arising in classical orthogonal expansions and the radial Laplacian. To get the results we use an analytic method based on a generalization of the Caffarelli--Silvestre extension problem, the Harnack's inequality for degenerate Schrödinger operators proved by C. E. Gutiérrez, and a transference method. In this manner we apply local PDE techniques to nonlocal operators. On the way a maximum principle and …
Cauchy problem for 3D incompressible Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (Hall-MHD) system with fractional Laplacians is studied. First, global well-posedness of small-energy solutions with general initial data in $H^s$, $s>\frac{5}{2}$, is proved. Second, a special class of large-energy initial data is constructed, with which the Cauchy problem is globally well-posed. The proofs rely upon a new global bound of energy estimates involving Littlewood-Paley decomposition and Sobolev inequalities, which enables one to overcome the $\frac{1}{2}$-order derivative loss of the magnetic field.
For the non-local space-time reaction-diffusion equation involving fractional $p$-Laplacian \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \frac{\partial^{α}u}{\partial t^{α}}+(-Δ)_{p}^{s} u=μu^{2}(1-kJ*u)-γu,&(x,t)\in\mathbb{R}^{N}\times(0,T)\\ u(x,0)=u_{0}(x),& x\in\mathbb{R}^{N} \end{cases} \end{equation*} $μ>0 ,k>0,γ\geq 1,α\in(0,1),s\in(0,1),1<p$, we consider for $N\leq2$ the problem of finding a global boundedness of the weak solution by virtue of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and fractional Duhamel's formula. Moreover, we prove such weak solution converge to $0$ exponentially or locally uniformly as …
The Cauchy problem in $\mathbb{R}^d,$ $d\geq 1,$ for a non-local in time p-Laplacian equations is considered. The nonexistence of nontrivial global weak solutions by using the test function method is obtained.
Ultrasound modulation of electrical or optical properties of materials offers the possibility to devise hybrid imaging techniques that combine the high electrical or optical contrast observed in many settings of interest with the high resolution of ultrasound. Mathematically, these modalities require that we reconstruct a diffusion coefficient $σ(x)$ for $x\in X$, a bounded domain in $\Rm^n$, from knowledge of $σ(x)|\nabla u|^2(x)$ for $x\in X$, where $u$ is the solution to the elliptic equation $-\nabla\cdotσ\nabla u=0$ in $X$ with $u=f$ on $\partial X$. This inverse problem may be recast as …
We prove regularity results such as interior Lipschitz regularity and boundary continuity for the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem associated to a class of parabolic equations inspired by the evolutionary $p$-Laplacian, but extending it at a wide scale. We employ a regularization technique of viscosity-type that we find interesting in itself.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions toward a multiwave pattern of the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the flux function is convex or concave but linearly degenerate on some interval, and also the viscosity is a nonlinearly degenerate one (p-Laplacian type viscosity). When the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution which consists of rarefaction waves and contact discontinuity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward th…
