We establish a Harnack inequality for a class of quasi-linear PDE modeled on the prototype {equation*}
\partial_tu= -\sum_{i=1}^{m}X_i^\ast (|\X u|^{p-2} X_i u){equation*} where $p\ge 2$, $ \ \X = (X_1,..., X_m)$ is a system of Lipschitz vector fields defined on a smooth manifold $\M$ endowed with a Borel measure $μ$, and $X_i^*$ denotes the adjoint of $X_i$ with respect to $μ$. Our estimates are derived assuming that (i) the control distance $d$ generated by $\X$ induces the same topology on $\M$; (ii) a doubling condition for the $μ$-measure of $d-$metric balls and (iii) the validity of a Poincaré inequality involving $\X$ and $μ$. Our results extend the recent work in \cite{DiBenedettoGianazzaVespri1}, \cite{K}, to a more general setting including the model cases of (1) metrics generated by Hörmander vector fields and Lebesgue measure; (2) Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and Riemannian volume forms; and (3) metrics generated by non-smooth Baouendi-Grushin type vector fields and Lebesgue measure. In all cases the Harnack inequality continues to hold when the Lebesgue measure is substituted by any smooth volume form or by measures with densities corresponding to Muckenhoupt type weights.
In this paper, under the generalized curvature-dimension inequality recently introduced by F. Baudoin and N. Garofalo, we obtain differential Harnack inequalities for the positive solutions to the Schödinger equation associated to subelliptic operator with potential. As applications of the differential Harnack inequality, we derive the corresponding parabolic Harnack inequality. Also we define the Perelman type entropy associated to subelliptic operators and derive its monotonicity.
We consider subelliptic equations in non divergence form of the type $Lu = \sum a_{ij} X_jX_iu=0$, where $X_j$ are the Grushin vector fields, and the matrix coefficient is uniformly elliptic. We obtain a scale invariant Harnack's inequality on the $X_j$'s CC balls for nonnegative solutions under the only assumption that the ratio between the maximum and minimum eigenvalues of the coefficient matrix is bounded. In the paper we first prove a weighted Aleksandrov Bakelman Pucci estimate, and then we show a critical density estimate, the double ball property and the power decay property. Once this…
We show that the Harnack inequality for a class of degenerate parabolic quasilinear PDE $$\p_t u=-X_i^* A_i(x,t,u,Xu)+ B(x,t,u,Xu),$$ associated to a system of Lipschitz continuous vector fields $X=(X_1,...,X_m)$ in in $\Om\times (0,T)$ with $\Om \subset M$ an open subset of a manifold $M$ with control metric $d$ corresponding to $X$ and a measure $dσ$ follows from the basic hypothesis of doubling condition and a weak Poincaré inequality. We also show that such hypothesis hold for a class of Riemannian metrics $g_\e$ collapsing to a sub-Riemannian metric $\lim_{\e\to 0} g_\e=g_0$ uniformly in …
We consider some system of complex vector fields related to the semi-classical Witten Laplacian, and establish the local subellipticity of this system basing on condition $(Ψ)$.
In this paper we prove an invariant Harnack inequality on Carnot-Carathéodory balls for fractional powers of sub-Laplacians in Carnot groups. The proof relies on an "abstract" formulation of a technique recently introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre. In addition, we write explicitly the Poisson kernel for a class of degenerate subelliptic equations in product-type Carnot groups.
We study the sub-Laplacian of the $15$-dimensional unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the octonionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of a related sub-Laplacian. As a byproduct we also obtain the spectrum of the sub-Laplacian, the small-time asymptotics of the heat kernel and explicitly compute the sub-Riemannian distance.
In this paper we study the boundary behavior of solutions of a divergence-form subelliptic heat equation in a time-varying domain Ωin R^{n+1}, structured on a set of vector fields X = (X_1, ... X_m) with smooth coefficients satisfying Hörmander's finite rank condition. Assuming that Ωis an X-NTA domain, we first prove a Dahlberg type estimate comparing the X-caloric measure of Ωand the Green function of the subelliptic heat operator. We then prove a backward Harnack inequality, the doubling property for the X-caloric measure of Ω, the Hölder continuity at the boundary for quotients of solution…
In this note, we study the sub-Laplacian of the 15-dimensional octonionic anti-de Sitter space which is obtained by lifting with respect to the anti-de Sitter fibration the Laplacian of the octonionic hyperbolic space $\mathbb{O}H^1$. We also obtain two integral representations for the corresponding subelliptic heat kernel.
We develop an abstract theory to obtain Harnack inequality for non homogeneous PDEs in the setting of quasi metric spaces. The main idea is to adapt the notion of double ball and critical density property given by Di Fazio, Gutiérrez, Lanconelli, taking into account the right hand side of the equation. Then we apply the abstract procedure to the case of subelliptic equations in non divergence form involving Grushin vector fields and to the case of X-elliptic operators in divergence form.
The main goal of this work is to study the sub-Laplacian of the unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the quaternionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of the conformal sub-Laplacian and small-time asymptotics. As a byproduct of our study we also obtain several results related to the sub-Laplacian of a projected Hopf fibration.
We study the heat kernel of the sub-Laplacian L on the CR sphere S2n+1. An explicit and geometrically meaningful formula for the heat kernel is obtained. As a by-product we recover in a simple way the Green function of the conformal sub- Laplacian -L + n2 that was obtained by Geller [12], and also get an explicit formula for the sub-Riemannian distance. The key point is to work in a set of coordinates that reflects the symmetries coming from the fibration S2n+1 \rightarrow CPn.
We study viscosity solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic equations of $p$-Laplacian type on Riemannian manifolds. The Krylov-Safonov type Harnack inequality for the $p$-Laplacian operators with $1<p<\infty$ is established on the manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below based on ABP type estimates. We also prove the Harnack inequality for nonlinear $p$-Laplacian type operators assuming that a nonlinear perturbation of Ricci curvature is bounded below.
We derive an integral representation for the subelliptic heat kernel of the complex anti-de Sitter fibration. Our proof is different from the one used in Jing Wang \cite{Wan} since it appeals to the commutativity of the D'Alembertian and of the Laplacian acting on the vertical variable rather than the analytic continuation of the heat semigroup of the real hyperbolic space. Our approach also sheds the light on the connection between the sub-Laplacian of the above fibration and the so-called generalized Maass Laplacian, and on the role played by the odd dimensional real hyperbolic space.
We study the subelliptic heat kernel of the sub-Laplacian on a 2n+1-dimensional anti-de Sitter space H2n+1 which also appears as a model space of a CR Sasakian manifold with constant negative sectional curvature. In particular we obtain an explicit and geometrically meaningful formula for the subelliptic heat kernel. The key idea is to work in a set of coordinates that reflects the symmetry coming from the Hopf fibration S1->H2n+1. A direct application is obtaining small time asymptotics of the subelliptic heat kernel. Also we derive an explicit formula for the sub-Riemannian distance on H2n+1
Under the lack of variational structure and nondegeneracy, we investigate three notions of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} for a general infinity Laplacian operator with gradient and homogeneous term. A Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack inequality are proved to support our analysis. This is a continuation of our first work [3] and a contribution in the development of the theory of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} beside the works [8, 13, 12, 9, 29]. We use these notions to characterize the validity of maximum principle and study the existence, nonexistence and uniquene…
On a Riemannian metric-measure space, we establish an Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci type measure estimate connecting Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature lower bound, modified Laplacian and the measure of certain special sets. We apply this estimate to prove Harnack inequalities for the modified Laplacian operator and fully non-linear operators. These inequalities seem not available in the literature; And our proof, solely based on the ABP estimate, does not involve any Sobolev inequalities nor gradient estimate. We also propose a question regarding the characterization of Ricci lower bound by the Harnack …
This article is concerned with maximal accretive realizations of geometric Kramers-Fokker-Planck operators on manifolds with boundaries. A general class of boundary conditions is introduced which ensures the maximal accretivity and some global subelliptic estimates. Those estimates imply nice spectral properties as well as exponential decay properties for the associated semigroup. Admissible boundary conditions cover a wide range of applications for the usual scalar Kramer-Fokker-Planck equation or Bismut's hypoelliptic Laplacian.
We investigate various boundary decay estimates for $p(\cdot)$-harmonic functions. For domains in $\mathbb{R}^n, n\geq 2$ satisfying the ball condition ($C^{1,1}$-domains) we show the boundary Harnack inequality for $p(\cdot)$-harmonic functions under the assumption that the variable exponent $p$ is a bounded Lipschitz function. The proof involves barrier functions and chaining arguments. Moreover, we prove a Carleson type estimate for $p(\cdot)$-harmonic functions in NTA domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and provide lower- and upper- growth estimates and a doubling property for a $p(\cdot)$-harmonic …
We present a survey on the regularity theory for classic solutions to subelliptic degenerate Kolmogorov equations. In the last part of this note we present a detailed proof of a Harnack inequality and a strong maximum principle.
H{ö}rmander's propagation of singularities theorem does not fully describe the propagation of singularities in subelliptic wave equations, due to the existence of doubly characteristic points. In the present work, building upon a visionary conference paper by R. Melrose \cite{Mel86}, we prove that singularities of subelliptic wave equations only propagate along null-bicharacteristics and abnormal extremals, which are well-known curves in optimal control theory. As a consequence, we characterize the singular support of subelliptic wave kernels outside the diagonal. These results show that abnor…
We continue to study regularity results for weak solutions of the large class of second order degenerate quasilinear equations of the form \begin{eqnarray} \text{div}\big(A(x,u,\nabla u)\big) = B(x,u,\nabla u)\text{ for }x\inΩ\nonumber \end{eqnarray} as considered in our previous paper giving local boundedness of weak solutions. Here we derive a version of Harnack's inequality as well as local Hölder continuity for weak solutions. The possible degeneracy of an equation in the class is expressed in terms of a nonnegative definite quadratic form associated with its principal part. No smoothness …
This paper introduces certain elliptic Harnack inequalities for harmonic functions in the setting of the product space $M \times X$, where $M$ is a (weighted) Riemannian Manifold and $X$ is a countable graph. Since some standard arguments for the elliptic case fail in this "mixed" setting, we adapt ideas introduced by Thierry Delmotte for the discrete parabolic case. We then present some useful applications of this inequality, namely, a kernel estimate for functions of the Laplacian on a graph. This application in turn provides sharp estimates for certain Markov kernels on graphs. We then clos…
Let $G$ be a unimodular Lie group, $X$ a compact manifold with boundary, and $M$ be the total space of a principal bundle $G\to M\to X$ so that $M$ is also a complex manifold satisfying a local subelliptic estimate. In this work, we show that if $G$ acts by holomorphic transformations in $M$, then the Laplacian $\square=\bar\partial^{*}\bar\partial+\bar\partial\bar\partial^{*}$ on $M$ has the following properties: The kernel of $\square$ restricted to the forms $Λ^{p,q}$ with $q>0$ is a closed, $G$-invariant subspace in $L^{2}(M,Λ^{p,q})$ of finite $G$-dimension. Secondly, we show that if $q>0…
We state and prove a general Harnack inequality for minimizers of nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators, whose model is the fractional p-Laplacian.
In this paper we consider a class of hypoelliptic second-order partial differential operators $\mathcal{L}$ in divergence form on $\mathbb{R}^N$, arising from CR geometry and Lie group theory, and we prove the Strong and Weak Maximum Principles and the Harnack Inequality for $\mathcal{L}$. The involved operators are not assumed to belong to the Hörmander hypoellipticity class, nor to satisfy subelliptic estimates, nor Muckenhoupt-type estimates on the degeneracy of the second order part; indeed our results hold true in the infinitely-degenerate case and for operators which are not necessarily …
We study qualitative and quantitative properties of local weak solutions of the fast $p$-Laplacian equation, $\partial_t u=Δ_{p}u$, with $1<p<2$. Our main results are quantitative positivity and boundedness estimates for locally defined solutions in domains of $\RR^n\times [0,T]$. We combine these lower and upper bounds in different forms of intrinsic Harnack inequalities, which are new in the very fast diffusion range, that is when $1<p \le 2n/(n+1)$. The boundedness results may be also extended to the limit case $p=1$, while the positivity estimates cannot. We prove the existence as well as …
In this paper we study the gradient estimate for positive solutions of Schrodinger equations on locally finite graph. Then we derive Harnack's inequality for positive solutions of the Schrodinger equations. We also set up some results about Green functions of the Laplacian equation on locally finite graph. Interesting properties of Schrodinger equation are derived.
Let the vector fields $X_1, ... , X_{6}$ form an orthonormal basis of ${\mathcal H}$, the orthogonal complement of a Cartan subalgebra (of dimension $2$) in SU(3). We prove that weak solutions $u$ to the degenerate subelliptic $p$-Laplacian $$ Δ_{\mathcal{H},{p}} u(x)=\sum_{i=1}^{6} X_i^{*}\left(|\nabla_{\hspace{-0.1cm} {\mathcal H}} u|^{p-2}X_{i}u \right) =0,$$ have Hölder continuous horizontal derivatives $\nabla_{\hspace{-0.1cm}{\mathcal H}} u=(X_1u, \ldots, X_{6}u)$ for $p\ge 2$. We also prove that a similar result holds for all compact connected semisimple Lie groups.
We consider operators of the form $L u(x) = \sum_{y \in \mathbb{Z}} k(x-y) \big( u(y) - u(x)\big)$ on the one-dimensional lattice with symmetric, integrable kernel $k$. We prove several results stating that under certain conditions on the kernel the operator $L$ satisfies the curvature-dimension condition $CD_Υ(0,F)$ (recently introduced by two of the authors) with some $CD$-function $F$, where attention is also paid to the asymptotic properties of $F$ (exponential growth at infinity and power-type behaviour near zero). We show that $CD_Υ(0,F)$ implies a Li-Yau inequality for positive solution…
We study regularity of the Finsler $γ$-Laplacian, a general class of degenerate elliptic PDEs which naturally appear in anisotropic geometric problems. Precisely, given any strictly convex family of $C^{1}$-norms $\{ ρ_{x}\}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and $γ> 1$, we consider the $W^{1,γ}(Ω)$ solutions of the anisotropic PDE $$ \displaystyle \int_Ω \left \langle ρ_{x}(Du)^{γ-1} (D ρ_{x})(Du), D φ\right \rangle = \int_Ω \vec{F} \cdot D φ+ f φ\qquad \forall φ\in W^{1,γ^{\prime}}_{0}(Ω). $$ Under the mild assumption $|ξ|^{-1} ρ_{x}( ξ) \in [ν, Λ]$ for all $(x,ξ) \in Ω\times \mathbb{R}^{n}$ and some $0 <…
We consider a class of generalized nonlocal $p$-Laplacian equations. We find some proper structural conditions to establish a version of nonlocal Harnack inequalities of weak solutions to such nonlocal problems by using the expansion of positivity and energy estimates.
Given a Carnot-Carathéodory space $\Om \sub \R^n$ with associated vector fields $X=\{X_1,...,X_m\}$, we derive the subelliptic $\infty$-Laplace system for mappings $u : \Om \larrow \R^N$, which reads \[ \label{1} \De^X_\infty u \, :=\, \Big(Xu \ot Xu + \|Xu\|^2 [Xu]^\bot \ot I \Big) : XX u\, = \, 0 \tag{1} \] in the limit of the subelliptic $p$-Laplacian as $p\ri \infty$. Here $Xu$ is the horizontal gradient and $[Xu]^\bot$ is the projection on its nullspace. Next, we identify the Variational Principle characterizing \eqref{1}, which is the "Euler-Lagrange PDE" of the supremal functional \[ \l…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the wave equations for sums of squares of left invariant vector fields on compact Lie groups and also for hypoelliptic homogeneous left-invariant differential operators on graded Lie groups (the positive Rockland operators), when the time-dependent propagation speed satisfies a Log-Lipschitz condition. We prove the well-posedness in the associated Sobolev spaces exhibiting a finite loss of regularity with respect to the initial data, which is not true when the propagation speed is a ${\rm H\ddot{o}lder}$ function. We also indicate an extension to g…
Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ satisfying $L1=0$, and which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We show that if $L$ satisfies, with a non negative curvature parameter, the generalized curvature inequality introduced by the first and third named authors in \cite{BG}, then the following properties hold: 1 The volume doubling property; 2 The Poincaré inequality; 3 The parabolic Harnack inequality. The key ingredient is the study of dimensional reverse log-Sobolev inequalities for the heat semi…
We prove the uniqueness for viscosity solutions of a differential equation involving the infinity-Laplacian with a variable exponent. A version of the Harnack's inequality is derived for this minimax problem.

In this work we investigate the well-posedness for difussion equations associated to subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups. The diffusion by strongly elliptic operators is considered as a special case and in particular the fractional diffusion with respect to the Laplacian. The general case is studied within the Hörmander classes associated to a sub-Riemannian structure on the group (encoded by a Hörmander system of vector fields). Applications to diffusion equations for fractional sub-Laplacians, fractional powers of more general subelliptic operators, and the corres…
We prove a Harnack inequality for distributional solutions to a type of degenerate elliptic PDEs in $N$ dimensions. The differential operators in question are related to the Kolmogorov operator, made up of the Laplacian in the last $N-1$ variables, a first-order term corresponding to a shear flow in the direction of the first variable, and a bounded measurable potential term. The first-order coefficient is a smooth function of the last $N-1$ variables and its derivatives up to certain order do not vanish simultaneously at any point, making the operators in question hypoelliptic.
We study fine global properties of nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy Problem for the fast $p$-Laplacian evolution equation $u_t=Δ_p u$ on the whole Euclidean space, in the so-called "good fast diffusion range" $\tfrac{2N}{N+1}<p<2$. It is well-known that non-negative solutions behave for large times as $\mathcal{B}$, the Barenblatt (or fundamental) solution, which has an explicit expression. We prove the so-called Global Harnack Principle (GHP), that is, precise global pointwise upper and lower estimates of nonnegative solutions in terms of $\mathcal{B}$. This can be considered the nonlinear…
In this paper we establish the subelliptic Picone type identities. As consequences, we obtain Hardy and Rellich type inequalities for anisotropic p-sub- Laplacians which are operators of the form $$ \mathcal{L}_p f := \sum_{i=1}^{N}X_i(|X_if|^{p_i-2}X_i f), \quad 1<p_i< \infty, $$ where $X_i, i=1,\ldots, N,$ are the generators of the first stratum of a stratified (Lie) group. Moreover, analogues of Hardy type inequalities with multiple singularities and many-particle Hardy type inequalities are obtained on stratified groups.
In this note we consider problems related to parabolic partial differential equations in geodesic metric measure spaces, that are equipped with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. We prove a location and scale invariant Harnack inequality for a minimizer of a variational problem related to a doubly non-linear parabolic equation involving the p-Laplacian. Moreover, we prove the sufficiency of the Grigor'yan--Saloff-Coste theorem for general p > 1 in geodesic metric spaces. The approach used is strictly variational, and hence we are able to carry out the argument in the metric setting.
