In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the wave equations for sums of squares of left invariant vector fields on compact Lie groups and also for hypoelliptic homogeneous left-invariant differential operators on graded Lie groups (the positive Rockland operators), when the time-dependent propagation speed satisfies a Log-Lipschitz condition. We prove the well-posedness in the associated Sobolev spaces exhibiting a finite loss of regularity with respect to the initial data, which is not true when the propagation speed is a ${\rm H\ddot{o}lder}$ function. We also indicate an extension to general Hilbert spaces. In the special case of the Laplacian on $\mathbb R^n$, the results boil down to the celebrated result of Colombini-De Giorgi and Spagnolo.
We solve the Kato square root problem for bounded measurable perturbations of subelliptic operators on connected Lie groups. The subelliptic operators are divergence form operators with complex bounded coefficients, which may have lower order terms. In this general setting we deduce inhomogeneous estimates. In case the group is nilpotent and the subelliptic operator is pure second order, then we prove stronger homogeneous estimates. Furthermore, we prove Lipschitz stability of the estimates under small perturbations of the coefficients.
We study some classes of singular perturbation problems where the dynamics of the fast variables evolve in the whole space obeying to an infinitesimal operator which is subelliptic and ergodic. We prove that the corresponding ergodic problem admits a solution which is globally Lipschitz continuous and it has at most a logarithmic growth at infinity. The main result of this paper establishes that as $ε\to 0$, the value functions of the singular perturbation problems converge locally uniformly to the solution of an effective problem whose operator and data are explicitly given in terms of the in…
We show that, under a natural scaling, the small-time behavior of the logarithmic derivatives of the subelliptic heat kernel on $SU(2)$ converges to their analogues on the Heisenberg group at time 1. Realizing $SU(2)$ as $\mathbb{S}^3$, we then generalize these results to higher-order odd-dimensional spheres equipped with their natural subRiemannian structure, where the limiting spaces are now the higher-dimensional Heisenberg groups.
We establish a Harnack inequality for a class of quasi-linear PDE modeled on the prototype {equation*} \partial_tu= -\sum_{i=1}^{m}X_i^\ast (|\X u|^{p-2} X_i u){equation*} where $p\ge 2$, $ \ \X = (X_1,..., X_m)$ is a system of Lipschitz vector fields defined on a smooth manifold $\M$ endowed with a Borel measure $μ$, and $X_i^*$ denotes the adjoint of $X_i$ with respect to $μ$. Our estimates are derived assuming that (i) the control distance $d$ generated by $\X$ induces the same topology on $\M$; (ii) a doubling condition for the $μ$-measure of $d-$metric balls and (iii) the validity of a Po…
In this article we establish a global subelliptic estimate for Kramers-Fokker-Planck operators with homogeneous potentials $V(q)$ under some conditions, involving in particular the control of the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix of the potential. Namely, this work presents a different approach from the one in [Ben], in which the case $V (q_1, q _2) =-q ^2_1 (q^ 2_1+q^2_2) ^n$ was already treated only for $n=1.$ With this article, after the former one dealing with non homogeneous polynomial potentials, we conclude the analysis of all the examples of degenerate ellipticity at infinty presented …
Extending a result of Caffarelli, we provide global Lipschitz changes of variables between compactly supported perturbations of log-concave measures. The result is based on a combination of ideas from optimal transportation theory and a new Pogorelov-type estimate. In the case of radially symmetric measures, Lipschitz changes of variables are obtained for a much broader class of perturbations.
We prove logarithmic conditional stability up to the final time for backward-parabolic operators whose coefficients are Log-Lipschitz continuous in $t$ and Lipschitz continuous in $x$. The result complements previous achievements of Del Santo and Prizzi (2009) and Del Santo, Jaeh and Prizzi (2015), concerning conditional stability (of a type intermediate between Hoelder and logarithmic), arbitrarily closed, but not up to the final time.
The present paper concerns the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for microlocally symmetrizable hyperbolic systems whose coefficients and symmetrizer are log-Lipschitz continuous, uniformly in time and space variables. For the global in space problem we establish energy estimates with finite loss of derivatives, which is linearly increasing in time. This implies well-posedness in $H^\infty$, if the coefficients enjoy enough smoothness in $x$. From this result, by standard arguments (i.e. extension and convexification) we deduce also local existence and uniqueness. A huge part of the analysi…
We give examples of systems of Partial Differential Equations that admit non-trivial, Lipschitz and one-homogeneous solutions in the form $u(R,θ) = Rg(θ)$, where $(R,θ)$ are plane polar coordinates and $g: \mathbb{R}^{2} \to \mathbb{R}^{m}$, $m \geq 2$. The systems are singular in the sense that they arise as the Euler-Lagrange equations of the functionals $I(u) = \int_{B}W(x,\nabla u(x))\,dx$, where $D_{F}W(x,F)$ behaves like $\frac{1}{|x|}$ as $|x| \to 0$ and $W$ satisfies an ellipticity condition. Such solutions cannot exist when $|x|D_{F}W(x,F) \to 0$ as $|x| \to 0$, so the condition is op…
This article is devoted to the study of the Cauchy problem for the Muskat equation. We consider initial data belonging to the critical Sobolev space of functions with three-half derivative in $L^2$, up to a fractional logarithmic correction. As a corollary, we obtain the first local and global well-posedness results for initial free surface which are not Lipschitz.
We consider the Cauchy problem for wave equations with variable coefficients in the whole space. We improve the rate of decay of the local energy, which has been recently studied by J. Shapiro, where he derives the log-order decay rates of the local energy under stronger assumptions on the regularity of the initial data.
In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions for time dependent mean-field games with a logarithmic nonlinearity and subquadratic Hamiltonians. Because the logarithm is unbounded from below, this nonlinearity poses substantial mathematical challenges that have not been addressed in the literature. Our result is proven by recurring to a delicate argument, which combines Lipschitz regularity for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with estimates for the nonlinearity in suitable Lebesgue spaces. Lipschitz estimates follow from an application of the nonlinear adjoint method. These are the…
We discuss various issues related to the finite-dimensionality of the asymptotic dynamics of solutions of parabolic equations. In particular, we study the regularity of the vector field on the global attractor associated with these equations. We show that certain dissipative partial differential equations possess a linear term that is log-Lipschitz continuous on the attractor. We then prove that this property implies that the associated global attractor $\mathcal A$ lies within a small neighbourhood of a smooth manifold, given as a Lipschitz graph over a finite number of Fourier modes. Consequ…
In this paper we study the inverse boundary value problem of determining the potential in the Schrödinger equation from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, which is commonly accepted as an ill-posed problem in the sense that, under general settings, the optimal stability estimate is of logarithmic type. In this work, a Lipschitz type stability is established assuming a priori that the potential is piecewise constant with a bounded known number of unknown values.
In the present paper, we consider second order strictly hyperbolic linear operators of the form $Lu\,=\,\partial_t^2u\,-\,{\rm div}\big(A(t,x)\nabla u\big)$, for $(t,x)\in[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^n$. We assume the coefficients of the matrix $A(t,x)$ to be smooth in time on $\,]0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^n$, but rapidly oscillating when $t\to 0^+$; they match instead minimal regularity assumptions (either Lipschitz or log-Lipschitz regularity conditions) with respect to the space variable. Correspondingly, we prove well-posedness results for the Cauchy problem related to $L$, either with no loss of deri…
In this paper we present an improvement of [Math. Ann. 345 (2009), 213--243], where the authors proved a result concerning continuous dependence for backward parabolic operators whose coefficients are Log-Lipschitz in $t$ and $C^2$ in $x$. The $C^2$ regularity with respect to $x$ had to be assumed for technical reasons. Here we remove this assumption, replacing it with Lipschitz-continuity. The main tools in the proof are Littlewood-Paley theory and Bony's paraproduct as well as a result of Coifman and Meyer [Astérisque 57, 1978, Th. 35].
Given a semi-convex potential V on a convex and bounded domain $Ω$, we consider the Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme for the Fokker-Planck equation with potential V, which defines, for fixed time step $τ$ > 0, a sequence of densities $ρ$ k $\in$ P($Ω$). Supposing that V is $α$-convex, i.e. D 2 V $\ge$ $α$I, we prove that the Lipschitz constant of log $ρ$ + V satisfies the following inequality: Lip(log($ρ$ k+1) + V)(1 + $α$$τ$) $\le$ Lip(log($ρ$ k) + V). This provides exponential decay if $α$ > 0, Lipschitz bounds on bounded intervals of time, which is coherent with the results on the continuous…

We consider the Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic $m$-th order partial differential equations with coefficients low-regular in time and smooth in space. It is well-known that the problem is $L^2$ well-posed in the case of Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time, $H^s$ well-posed in the case of Log-Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, finite loss of derivatives) and Gevrey well-posed in the case of Hölder continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, infinite loss of derivatives). Here, we use moduli of continuity to describe the regularity of the coeff…
If $X$ is a subset of a Banach space with $X-X$ homogeneous, then $X$ can be embedded into some $\R^n$ (with $n$ sufficiently large) using a linear map $L$ whose inverse is Lipschitz to within logarithmic corrections. More precisely, $$c\,\frac{\|x-y\|}{|\,\log\|x-y\|\,|^α}\le|Lx-Ly|\le c\|x-y\|$$ for all $x,y\in X$ with $\|x-y\|<δ$ for some $δ$ sufficiently small. A simple argument shows that one must have $α>1$ in the case of a general Banach space and $α>1/2$ in the case of a Hilbert space. It is shown in this paper that these exponents can be achieved. While the argument in a general Banac…
In this paper we prove observability estimates for 1-dimensional wave equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients. For coefficients in the Zygmund class we prove a "classical" observability estimate, which extends the well-known observability results in the energy space for $BV$ regularity. When the coefficients are instead log-Lipschitz or log-Zygmund, we prove observability estimates "with loss of derivatives": in order to estimate the total energy of the solutions, we need measurements on some higher order Sobolev norms at the boundary. This last result represents the intermediate step betwee…
In this paper, we are interested in the global persistence regularity for the 2D incompressible Euler equations in some function spaces allowing unbounded vorticities. More precisely, we prove the global propagation of the vorticity in some weighted Morrey-Campanato spaces and in this framework the velocity field is not necessarily Lipschitz but belongs to the log-Lipschitz class $L^αL,$ for some $α\in (0,1).$
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for second order strictly hyperbolic operators when the coefficients of the principal part are not Lipschitz continuous, but only "Log-Lipschitz" with respect to all the variables. This class of equation is invariant under changes of variables and therefore suitable for a local analysis. In particular, we show local existence, local uniqueness and finite speed of propagation for the noncharacteristic Cauchy problem.
