A subset of vertices $F$ in a graph $G$ is called a \emph{dissociation set} if the induced subgraph $G[F]$ of $G$ has maximum degree at most 1. A \emph{maximal dissociation set} of $G$ is a dissociation set which is not a proper subset of any other dissociation sets. A \emph{maximum dissociation set} is a dissociation set of maximum size. We show that every graph of order $n$ has at most $10^{\frac{n}{5}}$ maximal dissociation sets, and that every triangle-free graph of order $n$ has at most $6^{\frac{n}{4}}$ maximal dissociation sets. We also characterize the extremal graphs on which these upper bounds are attained. The tight upper bounds on the number of maximum dissociation sets in general and triangle-free graphs are also obtained.
Scott conjectured that the class of graphs with no induced subdivision of a given graph is $χ$-bounded. We verify his conjecture for maximal triangle-free graphs.
Paul Erdős suggested the following problem: Determine or estimate the number of maximal triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices. Here we show that the number of maximal triangle-free graphs is at most $2^{n^2/8+o(n^2)}$, which matches the previously known lower bound. Our proof uses among others the Ruzsa-Szemerédi triangle removal lemma, and recent results on characterizing of the structure of independent sets in hypergraphs.
Recently, settling a question of Erdős, Balogh and Petříčková showed that there are at most $2^{n^2/8+o(n^2)}$ $n$-vertex maximal triangle-free graphs, matching the previously known lower bound. Here we characterize the typical structure of maximal triangle-free graphs. We show that almost every maximal triangle-free graph $G$ admits a vertex partition $X\cup Y$ such that $G[X]$ is a perfect matching and $Y$ is an independent set. Our proof uses the Ruzsa-Szemerédi removal lemma, the Erdős-Simonovits stability theorem, and recent results of Balogh-Morris-Samotij and Saxton-Thomason on characte…
The independence number $α(G)$ and the dissociation number ${\rm diss}(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the largest orders of induced subgraphs of $G$ of maximum degree at most $0$ and at most $1$, respectively. We consider possible improvements of the obvious inequality $2α(G)\geq {\rm diss}(G)$. For connected cubic graphs $G$ distinct from $K_4$, we show $5α(G)\geq 3{\rm diss}(G)$, and describe the rich and interesting structure of the extremal graphs in detail. For bipartite graphs, and, more generally, triangle-free graphs, we also obtain improvements. For subcubic graphs though, the inequality cann…
Proctor proved a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side-lengths $a,b,c,a,b,c$ after removing a "maximal staircase." Ciucu then presented a weighted version of Proctor's result. Here we present weighted and unweighted formulas for a similar region which has an additional unit triangle removed. We use Kuo's graphical condensation method to prove the results. By applying the factorization theorem of Ciucu, we obtain a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with three holes on consecutive edges.
We connect two classical results in extremal graph theory concerning the number of maximal independent sets. The maximum number mis$(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph was determined by Moon and Moser. The maximum number mis$_\bigtriangleup(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex triangle-free graph was determined by Hujter and Tuza. We determine the maximum number mis$_t(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph containing no induced triangle matching of size $t+1$. We also reprove a stability result of Kahn and Park on the maximum number mis$_{\bigtr…
We conjecture that the balanced complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor,\lceil n/2 \rceil}$ contains more cycles than any other $n$-vertex triangle-free graph, and we make some progress toward proving this. We give equivalent conditions for cycle-maximal triangle-free graphs; show bounds on the numbers of cycles in graphs depending on numbers of vertices and edges, girth, and homomorphisms to small fixed graphs; and use the bounds to show that among regular graphs, the conjecture holds. We also consider graphs that are close to being regular, with the minimum and maximum degrees diffe…
An induced matching in a graph is a set of edges whose endpoints induce a $1$-regular subgraph. It is known that any $n$-vertex graph has at most $10^{n/5} \approx 1.5849^n$ maximal induced matchings, and this bound is best possible. We prove that any $n$-vertex triangle-free graph has at most $3^{n/3} \approx 1.4423^n$ maximal induced matchings, and this bound is attained by any disjoint union of copies of the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$. Our result implies that all maximal induced matchings in an $n$-vertex triangle-free graph can be listed in time $O(1.4423^n)$, yielding the fastest …
The triangle-free process begins with an empty graph on n vertices and iteratively adds edges chosen uniformly at random subject to the constraint that no triangle is formed. We determine the asymptotic number of edges in the maximal triangle-free graph at which the triangle-free process terminates. We also bound the independence number of this graph, which gives an improved lower bound on the Ramsey numbers R(3,t): we show R(3,t) > (1-o(1)) t^2 / (4 log t), which is within a 4+o(1) factor of the best known upper bound. Our improvement on previous analyses of this process exploits the self-cor…
Simonovits and Sós conjectured that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{\binom{n}{2}-3}$. Their conjecture has recently been proved using spectral methods. We provide an elementary proof of the special case of $8$ vertices using a partition argument.
We reach beyond the celebrated theorems of Erdős-Ko-Rado and Hilton-Milner, and, a recent theorem of Han-Kohayakawa, and determine all maximal intersecting triples systems. It turns out that for each $n\ge7$ there are exactly 15 pairwise non-isomorphic such systems (and 13 for $n=6$). We present our result in terms of a hierarchy of Turán numbers $\ex^{(s)}(n, M_2^{3})$, $s\ge1$, where $M_2^{3}$ is a pair of disjoint triples. Moreover, owing to our unified approach, we provide short proofs of the above mentioned results (for triple systems only). The triangle $C_3$ is defined as $C_3=\{\{x_1,y…
Answering questions of Y. Rabinovich, we prove "stability" versions of upper bounds on maximal independent set counts in graphs under various restrictions. Roughly these say that being close to the maximum implies existence of a large induced matching or triangle matching (depending on assumptions).
A game starts with the empty graph on $n$ vertices, and two player alternate adding edges to the graph. Only moves which do not create a triangle are valid. The game ends when a maximal triangle-free graph is reached. The goal of one player is to end the game as soon as possible, while the other player is trying to prolong the game. With optimal play, the length of the game (number of edges played) is called the $K_3$ game saturation number. In this paper we prove an upper bound for this number.
Let $F_s$ be the friendship graph obtained from $s$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. For fixed $s\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$, the $F_s$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)],and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)]. Recently, the spectral extremal problems was widely studied for graphs containing no $H$ as a minor. For instance, Tait [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019)], Zhai and Lin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 157 (…
Let $G$ be a fixed graph. Two paths of length $n-1$ on $n$ vertices (Hamiltonian paths) are $G$-different if there is a subgraph isomorphic to $G$ in their union. In this paper we prove that the maximal number of pairwise triangle-different Hamiltonian paths is equal to the number of balanced bipartitions of the ground set, answering a question of Körner, Messuti and Simonyi.
We study extremal type problem arising from the question: What is the maximum number of edge-disjoint non-crossing perfect matchings on a set S of 2n points in the plane such that their union is a triangle-free geometric graph? We approach this problem by considering four different situations of S. In particular, in the general position, we obtain (i) a sufficient condition for the existence of n edge-disjoint non-crossing perfect matchings in the general position whose union is a maximal triangle-free geometric graph, and (ii) a lower bound on the number of edge-disjoint non-crossing perfect …
Using the formalism of flag algebras, we prove that every triangle-free graph $G$ with $n$ vertices contains at most $(n/5)^5$ cycles of length five. Moreover, the equality is attained only when $n$ is divisible by five and $G$ is the balanced blow-up of the pentagon. We also compute the maximal number of pentagons and characterize extremal graphs in the non-divisible case provided $n$ is sufficiently large. This settles a conjecture made by Erdős in 1984.
We construct dense, triangle-free, chromatic-critical graphs of chromatic number $k$ for all $k\geq 4$. For $k\geq 6$ our constructions have $> (\frac{1}{4} -\varepsilon)n^2$ edges, which is asymptotically best possible by Turán's theorem. We also demonstrate (nonconstructively) the existence of dense $k$-critical graphs avoiding all odd cycles of length $\leq \ell$ for any $\ell$ and any $k\geq 4$, again with a best possible density of $>(\frac{1}{4} -\varepsilon)n^2$ edges for $k\geq 6$. The families of graphs without triangles or of given odd-girth are thus rare examples where we know the c…
Consider the following stochastic graph process. We begin with the empty graph on n vertices and add edges one at a time, where each edge is chosen uniformly at random from the collection of potential edges that do not form triangles when added to the graph. The process terminates at a maximal traingle-free graph. Here we analyze the triangle-free process, determining the likely order of magnitude of the number of edges in the final graph. As a corollary we show that the triangle-free process is very likely to produce a Ramsey R(3,t) graph; that is, our analysis of the triangle-free process gi…
A book of size $q$ is a set of $q$ triangles sharing a common edge. We study the size of the maximal book in a graph as a function of the number of its edges. In particular, we answer two questions of Erdos about graphs that are union of triangles.
A tree-coloring of a maximal planar graph is a proper vertex $4$-coloring such that every bichromatic subgraph, induced by this coloring, is a tree. A maximal planar graph $G$ is tree-colorable if $G$ has a tree-coloring. In this article, we prove that a tree-colorable maximal planar graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq 4$ contains at least four odd-vertices. Moreover, for a tree-colorable maximal planar graph of minimum degree 4 that contains exactly four odd-vertices, we show that the subgraph induced by its four odd-vertices is not a claw and contains no triangles.
A graph is maximal $k$-degenerate if each induced subgraph has a vertex of degree at most $k$ and adding any new edge to the graph violates this condition. In this paper, we provide sharp lower and upper bounds on Wiener indices of maximal $k$-degenerate graphs of order $n \ge k \ge 1$. A graph is chordal if every induced cycle in the graph is a triangle and chordal maximal $k$-degenerate graphs of order $n \ge k$ are $k$-trees. For $k$-trees of order $n \ge 2k+2$, we characterize all extremal graphs for the upper bound.
A famous conjecture of Tuza \cite{tuza} is that the minimal number of edges needed to cover all triangles in a graph is at most twice the maximal number of edge-disjoint triangles. We propose a wider setting for this conjecture. For a hypergraph $H$ let $ν^{(m)}(H)$ be the maximal size of a collection of edges, no two of which share $m$ or more vertices, and let $τ^{(m)}(H)$ be the minimal size of a collection $C$ of sets of $m$ vertices, such that every edge in $H$ contains a set from $C$. We conjecture that the maximal ratio $τ^{(m)}(H)/ν^{(m)}(H)$ is attained in hypergraphs for which $ν^{(m…
Motivated by the concept of well-covered graphs, we define a graph to be well-bicovered if every vertex-maximal bipartite subgraph has the same order (which we call the bipartite number). We first give examples of them, compare them with well-covered graphs, and characterize those with small or large bipartite number. We then consider graph operations including the union, join, and lexicographic and cartesian products. Thereafter we consider simplicial vertices and 3-colored graphs where every vertex is in triangle, and conclude by characterizing the maximal outerplanar graphs that are well-bi…
A 2-tree is a graph that can be formed by starting with a triangle and iterating the operation of making a new vertex adjacent to two adjacent vertices of the existing graph. Leizhen Cai asked in 1995 whether every maximal planar graph contains a spanning 2-tree. We answer this question in the negative by constructing an infinite class of maximal planar graphs that have no spanning 2-tree.
A graph is called equimatchable if all of its maximal matchings have the same size. Frendrup et al. [8] provided a characterization of equimatchable graphs with girth at least $5$. In this paper, we extend this result by providing a complete structural characterization of equimatchable graphs with girth at least $4$, i.e., equimatchable graphs with no triangle, by identifying the equimatchable triangle-free graph families. Our characterization also extends the result given by Akbari et al. in [1], which proves that the only connected triangle-free equimatchable $r$-regular graphs are $C_5$, $C…
A Graph is called 2-self-centered if its diameter and radius both equal to 2. In this paper, we begin characterizing these graphs by characterizing edge-maximal 2-self-centered graphs via their complements. Then we split characterizing edge-minimal 2-self-centered graphs into two cases. First, we characterize edge-minimal 2-self-centered graphs without triangles by introducing \emph{specialized bi-independent covering (SBIC)} and a structure named \emph{generalized complete bipartite graph (GCBG)}. Then, we complete characterization by characterizing edge-minimal 2-self-centered graphs with so…
The corner polyhedron is described by minimal valid inequalities from maximal lattice-free convex sets. For the Relaxed Corner Polyhedron (RCP) with two free integer variables and any number of non-negative continuous variables, it is known that such facet defining inequalities arise from maximal lattice-free splits, triangles and quadrilaterals. We improve on the tightest known upper bound for the approximation of the RCP, purely by minimal valid inequalities from maximal lattice-free quadrilaterals, from 2 to 1.71. We generalize the tightest known lower bound of 1.125 for the approximation o…
Let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and spectral radius $λ_{1}$. Let $bk\left( G\right) $ stand for the maximal number of triangles with a common edge in $G$. In 1970 Nosal proved that if $λ_{1}^{2}>m,$ then $G$ contains a triangle. In this paper we show that the same premise implies that \[ bk\left( G\right) >\frac{1}{12}\sqrt[4]{m}. \] This result settles a conjecture of Zhai, Lin, and Shu. Write $λ_{2}$ for the second largest eigenvalue of $G$. Recently, Lin, Ning, and Wu showed that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph of order at least three, then \[ λ_{1}^{2}+λ_{2}^{2}\leq m, \] thereby settlin…
We study the energy per vertex in regular graphs. For every k, we give an upper bound for the energy per vertex of a k-regular graph, and show that a graph attains the upper bound if and only if it is the disjoint union of incidence graphs of projective planes of order k-1 or, in case k=2, the disjoint union of triangles and hexagons. For every k, we also construct k-regular subgraphs of incidence graphs of projective planes for which the energy per vertex is close to the upper bound. In this way, we show that this upper bound is asymptotically tight.
The optimality of the Erdős-Rado theorem for pairs is witnessed by the colouring $Δ_κ: [2^κ]^2 \rightarrow κ$ recording the least point of disagreement between two functions. This colouring has no monochromatic triangles or, more generally, odd cycles. We investigate a number of questions investigating the extent to which $Δ_κ$ is an \emph{extremal} such triangle-free or odd-cycle-free colouring. We begin by introducing the notion of $Δ$-regressive and almost $Δ$-regressive colourings and studying the structures that must appear as monochromatic subgraphs for such colourings. We also consider …
Nielsen proved that the maximum number of maximal independent sets (MIS's) of size $k$ in an $n$-vertex graph is asymptotic to $(n/k)^k$, with the extremal construction a disjoint union of $k$ cliques with sizes as close to $n/k$ as possible. In this paper we study how many MIS's of size $k$ an $n$-vertex graph $G$ can have if $G$ does not contain a clique $K_t$. We prove for all fixed $k$ and $t$ that there exist such graphs with $n^{\lfloor\frac{(t-2)k}{t-1}\rfloor-o(1)}$ MIS's of size $k$ by utilizing recent work of Gowers and B. Janzer on a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. We…
We prove that if $M$ is a maximal $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of a multigraph $G$ and if $F = \{v \in V(G) : d_M(v) \leq k-μ(v)\}$, then $d_F(v) \leq d_M(v)$ for all $v \in F$. (When $G$ is a simple graph, the set $F$ is just the set of vertices having degree less than $k$ in $M$.) This implies Vizing's Theorem as well as a special case of Tuza's Conjecture on packing and covering of triangles. A more detailed version of our result also implies Vizing's Adjacency Lemma for simple graphs.
The Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem (WIS) is a well-known NP-hard problem. A popular way to study WIS is to detect graph classes for which WIS can be solved in polynomial time, with particular reference to hereditary graph classes, i.e., defined by a hereditary graph property or equivalently by forbidding one or more induced subgraphs. Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, $G+H$ denotes the disjoint union of $G$ and $H$. This manuscript shows that (i) WIS can be solved for ($P_4+P_4$, Triangle)-free graphs in polynomial time, where a $P_4$ is an induced path of four vertices and a Triangle is a…
In this article we give the generalized triangle Ramsey numbers R(K3,G) of 12 005 158 of the 12 005 168 graphs of order 10. There are 10 graphs remaining for which we could not determine the Ramsey number. Most likely these graphs need approaches focusing on each individual graph in order to determine their triangle Ramsey number. The results were obtained by combining new computational and theoretical results. We also describe an optimized algorithm for the generation of all maximal triangle-free graphs and triangle Ramsey graphs. All Ramsey numbers up to 30 were computed by our implementatio…
This paper studies groups of maximal size acting harmonically on a finite graph. Our main result states that these maximal graph groups are exactly the finite quotients of the modular group $Γ=\left<x,y \ | \ x^2=y^3=1\right>$ of size at least 6. This characterization may be viewed as a discrete analogue of the description of Hurwitz groups as finite quotients of the $(2,3,7)$-triangle group in the context of holomorphic group actions on Riemann surfaces. In fact, as an immediate consequence of our result, every Hurwitz group is a maximal graph group, and the final section of the paper establi…
This paper studies the co-maximal graph $\Om(R)$, the induced subgraph $\G(R)$ of $\Om(R)$ whose vertex set is $R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))$ and a retract $\G_r(R)$ of $\G(R)$, where $R$ is a commutative ring. We show that the core of $\G(R)$ is a union of triangles and rectangles, while a vertex in $\G(R)$ is either an end vertex or a vertex in the core. For a non-local ring $R$, we prove that both the chromatic number and clique number of $\G(R)$ are identical with the number of maximal ideals of $R$. A graph $\G_r(R)$ is also introduced on the vertex set $\{Rx|\,x\in R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R…
Tuza (1981) conjectured that the size $τ(G)$ of a minimum set of edges that intersects every triangle of a graph $G$ is at most twice the size $ν(G)$ of a maximum set of edge-disjoint triangles of $G$. In this paper we present three results regarding Tuza's Conjecture. We verify it for graphs with treewidth at most $6$; we show that $τ(G)\leq \frac{3}{2}\,ν(G)$ for every planar triangulation $G$ different from $K_4$; and that $τ(G)\leq\frac{9}{5}\,ν(G) + \frac{1}{5}$ if $G$ is a maximal graph with treewidth 3. Our first result strengthens a result of Tuza, implying that $τ(G) \leq 2\,ν(G)$ for…
A biclique of a graph $G$ is an induced complete bipartite subgraph of $G$ such that neither part is empty. A star is a biclique of $G$ such that one part has exactly one vertex. The star graph of $G$ is the intersection graph of the maximal stars of $G$. A graph $H$ is star-critical if its star graph is different from the star graph of any of its proper induced subgraphs. We begin by presenting a bound on the size of star-critical pre-images by a quadratic function on the number of vertices of the star graph, then proceed to describe a Krausz-type characterization for this graph class; we com…
Let A be a pre-defined set of rational numbers. We say a set of natural numbers S is an A-quotient-free set if no ratio of two elements in S belongs to A. We find the maximal asymptotic density and the maximal upper asymptotic density of A-quotient-free sets when A belongs to a particular class. It is known that in the case A = {p, q}, where p, q are coprime integers greater than one, the latest problem is reduced to evaluation of the largest number of lattice non-adjacent points in a triangle whose legs lie on coordinate axis. We prove that this number is achieved by choosing points of the sa…
A family $F$ of graphs on a fixed set of $n$ vertices is called triangle-intersecting if for any $G_1,G_2 \in F$, the intersection $G_1 \cap G_2$ contains a triangle. More generally, for a fixed graph $H$, a family $F$ is $H$-intersecting if the intersection of any two graphs in $F$ contains a sub-graph isomorphic to $H$. In [D. Ellis, Y. Filmus, and E. Friedgut, Triangle-intersecting families of graphs, J. Eur. Math. Soc. 14 (2012), pp. 841--885], Ellis, Filmus and Friedgut proved a 36-year old conjecture of Simonovits and Sós stating that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family is…

We present a simple construction of an acute set of size $2^{d-1}+1$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for any dimension $d$. That is, we explicitly give $2^{d-1}+1$ points in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space with the property that any three points form an acute triangle. It is known that the maximal number of such points is less than $2^d$. Our result significantly improves upon a recent construction, due to Dmitriy Zakharov, with size of order $φ^d$ where $φ= (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618$ is the golden ratio.
We prove that the chromatic polynomial $P_\mathbb{G}(q)$ of a finite graph $\mathbb{G}$ of maximal degree $\D$ is free of zeros for $\card q\ge C^*(\D)$ with $$ C^*(\D) = \min_{0<x<2^{1\over \D}-1} {(1+x)^{\D-1}\over x [2-(1+x)^\D]} $$ This improves results by Sokal (2001) and Borgs (2005). Furthermore, we present a strengthening of this condition for graphs with no triangle-free vertices.
