The Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem (WIS) is a well-known NP-hard problem. A popular way to study WIS is to detect graph classes for which WIS can be solved in polynomial time, with particular reference to hereditary graph classes, i.e., defined by a hereditary graph property or equivalently by forbidding one or more induced subgraphs. Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, $G+H$ denotes the disjoint union of $G$ and $H$. This manuscript shows that (i) WIS can be solved for ($P_4+P_4$, Triangle)-free graphs in polynomial time, where a $P_4$ is an induced path of four vertices and a Triangle is a cycle of three vertices, and that in particular it turns out that (ii) for every ($P_4+P_4$, Triangle)-free graph $G$ there is a family ${\cal S}$ of subsets of $V(G)$ inducing (complete) bipartite subgraphs of $G$, which contains polynomially many members and can be computed in polynomial time, such that every maximal independent set of $G$ is contained in some member of ${\cal S}$. These results seem to be harmonic with respect to other polynomial results for WIS on certain [subclasses of] $S_{i,j,k}$-free graphs and to other structure results on [subclasses of] Triangle-free graphs.
Difference triangle sets are useful in many practical problems of information transmission. This correspondence studies combinatorial and computational constructions for difference triangle sets having small scopes. Our algorithms have been used to produce difference triangle sets whose scopes are the best currently known.
Every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices has an independent set of size at least (n+1)/3, and this lower bound is tight. We give an algorithm that, given a triangle-free planar graph G on n vertices and an integer k>=0, decides whether G has an independent set of size at least (n+k)/3, in time 2^{O(sqrt{k})}n. Thus, the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by k. Furthermore, as a corollary of the result used to prove the correctness of the algorithm, we show that there exists epsilon>0 such that every planar graph of girth at least five on n vertices has an independent…
Given a family of sets on the plane, we say that the family is intersecting if for any two sets from the family their interiors intersect. In this paper, we study intersecting families of triangles with vertices in a given set of points. In particular, we show that if a set $P$ of $n$ points is in convex position, then the largest intersecting family of triangles with vertices in $P$ contains at most $(\frac{1}{4}+o(1))\binom{n}{3}$ triangles.
It is proved that there are triangle-free intersection graphs of line segments in the plane with arbitrarily small ratio between the maximum size of an independent set and the total number of vertices.
Every $n$-vertex planar triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ has an independent set of size at least $\frac{3}{8}n$. This was first conjectured by Albertson, Bollobás and Tucker, and was later proved by Heckman and Thomas. Fraughnaugh and Locke conjectured that the planarity requirement could be relaxed into just forbidding a few specific nonplanar subgraphs: They described a family $\mathcal{F}$ of six nonplanar graphs (each of order at most $22$) and conjectured that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ having no subgraph isomorphic to a member …
We study the following family of problems: Given a set of $n$ points in convex position, what is the maximum number triangles one can create having these points as vertices while avoiding certain sets of forbidden configurations. As forbidden configurations we consider all 8 ways in which a pair of triangles in such a point set can interact. This leads to 256 extremal Turán-type questions. We give nearly tight (within a $\log n$ factor) bounds for 248 of these questions and show that the remaining 8 questions are all asymptotically equivalent to Stein's longstanding tripod packing problem.
Let $E(k, \ell)$ denote the smallest integer such that any set of at least $E(k, \ell)$ points in the plane, no three on a line, contains either an empty convex polygon with $k$ vertices or an empty pseudo-triangle with $\ell$ vertices. The existence of $E(k, \ell)$ for positive integers $k, \ell\geq 3$, is the consequence of a result proved by Valtr [Discrete and Computational Geometry, Vol. 37, 565--576, 2007]. In this paper, following a series of new results about the existence of empty pseudo-triangles in point sets with triangular convex hulls, we determine the exact values of $E(k, 5)$ a…
Steinberg and Tovey proved that every n-vertex planar triangle-free graph has an independent set of size at least (n+1)/3, and described an infinite class of tight examples. We show that all n-vertex planar triangle-free graphs except for this one infinite class have independent sets of size at least (n+2)/3.

The Maximum Weight Independent Set (MWIS) problem on finite undirected graphs with vertex weights asks for a set of pairwise nonadjacent vertices of maximum weight sum. MWIS is one of the most investigated and most important algorithmic graph problems; it is well known to be NP-complete, and it remains NP-complete even under various strong restrictions such as for triangle-free graphs. Its complexity for $P_k$-free graphs, $k \ge 7$, is an open problem. In \cite{BraMos2018}, it is shown that MWIS can be solved in polynomial time for ($P_7$,triangle)-free graphs. This result is extended by Maff…
An $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a vertex-partition into two sets $F$ and $F_d$ such that the graph induced by $F$ is a forest and the one induced by $F_d$ is a forest with maximum degree at most $d$. We prove that every triangle-free planar graph admits an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_5)$-partition. Moreover we show that if for some integer $d$ there exists a triangle-free planar graph that does not admit an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition, then it is an NP-complete problem to decide whether a triangle-free planar graph admits such a partition.
Given a point set $P$ and a class $\mathcal{C}$ of geometric objects, $G_\mathcal{C}(P)$ is a geometric graph with vertex set $P$ such that any two vertices $p$ and $q$ are adjacent if and only if there is some $C \in \mathcal{C}$ containing both $p$ and $q$ but no other points from $P$. We study $G_{\bigtriangledown}(P)$ graphs where $\bigtriangledown$ is the class of downward equilateral triangles (ie. equilateral triangles with one of their sides parallel to the x-axis and the corner opposite to this side below that side). For point sets in general position, these graphs have been shown to …
Koivisto studied the partitioning of sets of bounded cardinality. We improve his time analysis somewhat, for the special case of triangle partitions, and obtain a slight improvement.
For two positive integers $r$ and $s$ with $r\geq 2s-2$, if $G$ is a graph of order $3r+4s$ such that $d(x)+d(y)\geq 4r+4s$ for every $xy\not\in E(G)$, then $G$ independently contains $r$ triangles and $s$ quadrilaterals, which partially prove the El-Zahar's Conjecture.

MWIS is one of the most investigated and most important algorithmic graph problems; it is well known to be NP-complete, and it remains NP-complete even under various strong restrictions such as for triangle-free graphs. Its complexity was an open problem for $P_k$-free graphs, $k \ge 5$. Recently, Lokshtanov, Vatshelle, and Villanger proved that MWIS can be solved in polynomial time for $P_5$-free graphs, and Lokshtanov, Pilipc…
Let $G$ be a triangle-free graph with $n$ vertices and average degree $t$. We show that $G$ contains at least \[ e^{(1-n^{-1/12})\frac{1}{2}\frac{n}{t}\ln t (\frac{1}{2}\ln t-1)} \] independent sets. This improves a recent result of the first and third authors \cite{countingind}. In particular, it implies that as $n \to \infty$, every triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has at least $e^{(c_1-o(1)) \sqrt{n} \ln n}$ independent sets, where $c_1 = \sqrt{\ln 2}/4 = 0.208138..$. Further, we show that for all $n$, there exists a triangle-free graph with $n$ vertices which has at most $e^{(c_2+o(1))\…
Since planar triangle-free graphs are 3-colourable, such a graph with n vertices has an independent set of size at least n/3. We prove that unless the graph contains a certain obstruction, its independence number is at least n/(3-epsilon) for some fixed epsilon>0. We also provide a reduction rule for this obstruction, which enables us to transform any plane triangle-free graph G into a plane triangle-free graph G' such that alpha(G')-|G'|/3=alpha(G)-|G|/3 and |G'|<=(alpha(G)-|G|/3)/epsilon. We derive a number of algorithmic consequences as well as a structural description of n-vertex plane tri…
The stable set polytope of a graph $G$, denoted as STAB($G$), is the convex hull of all the incidence vectors of stable sets of $G$. To describe a linear system which defines STAB($G$) seems to be a difficult task in the general case. In this paper we present a complete description of the stable set polytope of ($P_6$,triangle)-free graphs (and more generally of ($P_6$,paw)-free graphs). For that we combine different tools, in the context of a well known result of Chvátal \cite{Chvatal1975} which allows to focus just on prime facet-inducing graphs, with particular reference to a structure resu…
We prove two distinct and natural refinements of a recent breakthrough result of Molloy (and a follow-up work of Bernshteyn) on the (list) chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. In both our results, we permit the amount of colour made available to vertices of lower degree to be accordingly lower. One result concerns list colouring and correspondence colouring, while the other concerns fractional colouring. Our proof of the second illustrates the use of the hard-core model to prove a Johansson-type result, which may be of independent interest.
Recently, cutting planes derived from maximal lattice-free convex sets have been studied intensively by the integer programming community. An important question in this research area has been to decide whether the closures associated with certain families of lattice-free sets are polyhedra. For a long time, the only result known was the celebrated theorem of Cook, Kannan and Schrijver who showed that the split closure is a polyhedron. Although some fairly general results were obtained by Andersen, Louveaux and Weismantel [ An analysis of mixed integer linear sets based on lattice point free co…
In a well-known paper[ARV], Arora, Rao and Vazirani obtained an O(sqrt(log n)) approximation to the Balanced Separator problem and Uniform Sparsest Cut. At the heart of their result is a geometric statement about sets of points that satisfy triangle inequalities, which also underlies subsequent work on approximation algorithms and geometric embeddings. In this note, we give an equivalent formulation of the Structure theorem in [ARV] in terms of the expansion of large sets in geometric graphs on sets of points satisfying triangle inequalities.
Several classical constructions illustrate the fact that the chromatic number of a graph can be arbitrarily large compared to its clique number. However, until very recently, no such construction was known for intersection graphs of geometric objects in the plane. We provide a general construction that for any arc-connected compact set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that is not an axis-aligned rectangle and for any positive integer $k$ produces a family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets, each obtained by an independent horizontal and vertical scaling and translation of $X$, such that no three sets in $\mathcal{F}$…
