Given a set of well-formed terminal pairs on the external face of an undirected planar graph with unit edge weights, we give a linear-time algorithm for computing the union of non-crossing shortest paths joining each terminal pair, where well-formed means that such a set of non-crossing paths exists. This allows us to compute distances between each terminal pair, within the same time bound. We also give a novel concept of incremental shortest path subgraph of a planar graph, i.e., a partition of the planar embedding in subregions that preserve distances, that can be of interest itself.
We show a fast algorithm for determining the set of edges in a planar undirected unweighted graph, whose deletion reduces the maximum flow between two fixed vertices. This is a special case of the max flow vitality problem, that has been efficiently solved for general undirected graphs and st-planar graphs. The vitality of an edge of a graph with respect to the maximum flow between two fixed vertices s and t is defined as the reduction of the maximum flow caused by the removal of that edge. In this paper we show that the set of edges having vitality greater than zero in a planar undirected unw…
The vitality of an edge in a graph with respect to the maximum flow between two fixed vertices $s$ and $t$ is defined as the reduction of the maximum flow value caused by the removal of that edge. The max-flow vitality problem has already been efficiently solved for $st$-planar graphs but has remained open for general planar graphs. For the first time our result provides an optimal solution for general planar graphs although restricted to the case of unweighted planar graphs.
A New Fast Weighted All-pairs Shortest Path Search Algorithm Based on Pruning by Shortest Path Trees
最近我们向arXiv提交了一篇论文,题目是A New Fast Unweighted All-pairs Shortest Path Search Algorithm Based on Pruning by Shortest Path Trees。
APSP with small integer weights in undirected graphs [Seidel'95, Galil and Margalit'97] has an $\tilde{O}(n^ω)$ time algorithm, where $ω<2.373$ is the matrix multiplication exponent. APSP in directed graphs with small weights however, has a much slower running time that would be $Ω(n^{2.5})$ even if $ω=2$ [Zwick'02]. To understand this $n^{2.5}$ bottleneck, we build a web of reductions around directed unweighted APSP. We show that it is fine-grained equivalent to computing a rectangular Min-Plus product for matrices with integer entries; the dimensions and entry size of the matrices depend on …
This paper presents near-optimal deterministic parallel and distributed algorithms for computing $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximate single-source shortest paths in any undirected weighted graph. On a high level, we deterministically reduce this and other shortest-path problems to $\tilde{O}(1)$ Minor-Aggregations. A Minor-Aggregation computes an aggregate (e.g., max or sum) of node-values for every connected component of some subgraph. Our reduction immediately implies: Optimal deterministic parallel (PRAM) algorithms with $\tilde{O}(1)$ depth and near-linear work. Universally-optimal deterministic…
Every undirected graph $G$ has a (weighted) cut-equivalent tree $T$, commonly named after Gomory and Hu who discovered it in 1961. Both $T$ and $G$ have the same node set, and for every node pair $s,t$, the minimum $(s,t)$-cut in $T$ is also an exact minimum $(s,t)$-cut in $G$. We give the first subcubic-time algorithm that constructs such a tree for a simple graph $G$ (unweighted with no parallel edges). Its time complexity is $\tilde{O}(n^{2.5})$, for $n=|V(G)|$; previously, only $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ was known, except for restricted cases like sparse graphs. Consequently, we obtain the first alg…
Given a set P of n points in the plane, the unit-disk graph G_{r}(P) with respect to a parameter r is an undirected graph whose vertex set is P such that an edge connects two points p, q \in P if the Euclidean distance between p and q is at most r (the weight of the edge is 1 in the unweighted case and is the distance between p and q in the weighted case). Given a value λ>0 and two points s and t of P, we consider the following reverse shortest path problem: computing the smallest r such that the shortest path length between s and t in G_r(P) is at most λ. In this paper, we present an algorith…
We present an $O(nm)$ algorithm for all-pairs shortest paths computations in a directed graph with $n$ nodes, $m$ arcs, and nonnegative integer arc costs. This matches the complexity bound attained by Thorup \cite{Thorup1999} for the all-pairs problems in undirected graphs. The main insight is that shortest paths problems with approximately balanced directed cost functions can be solved similarly to the undirected case. The algorithm finds an approximately balanced reduced cost function in an $O(m\sqrt{n}\log n)$ preprocessing step. Using these reduced costs, every shortest path query can be s…
Given $p$ node pairs in an $n$-node graph, a distance preserver is a sparse subgraph that agrees with the original graph on all of the given pairwise distances. We prove the following bounds on the number of edges needed for a distance preserver: - Any $p$ node pairs in a directed weighted graph have a distance preserver on $O(n + n^{2/3} p)$ edges. - Any $p = Ω\left(\frac{n^2}{rs(n)}\right)$ node pairs in an undirected unweighted graph have a distance preserver on $O(p)$ edges, where $rs(n)$ is the Ruzsa-Szemerédi function from combinatorial graph theory. - As a lower bound, there are example…
Given an undirected, unweighted planar graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, we present a truly subquadratic size distance oracle for reporting exact shortest-path distances between any pair of vertices of $G$ in constant time. For any $\varepsilon > 0$, our distance oracle takes up $O(n^{5/3+\varepsilon})$ space and is capable of answering shortest-path distance queries exactly for any pair of vertices of $G$ in worst-case time $O(\log (1/\varepsilon))$. Previously no truly sub-quadratic size distance oracles with constant query time for answering exact all-pairs shortest paths distance queries existe…
We prove several tight results on the fine-grained complexity of approximating the diameter of a graph. First, we prove that, for any $\varepsilon>0$, assuming the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH), there are no near-linear time $2-\varepsilon$-approximation algorithms for the Diameter of a sparse directed graph, even in unweighted graphs. This result shows that a simple near-linear time 2-approximation algorithm for Diameter is optimal under SETH, answering a question from a survey of Rubinstein and Vassilevska-Williams (SIGACT '19) for the case of directed graphs. In the same survey,…
Computing approximate shortest paths in the dynamic streaming setting is a fundamental challenge that has been intensively studied during the last decade. Currently existing solutions for this problem either build a sparse multiplicative spanner of the input graph and compute shortest paths in the spanner offline, or compute an exact single source BFS tree. Solutions of the first type are doomed to incur a stretch-space tradeoff of $2κ-1$ versus $n^{1+1/κ}$, for an integer parameter $κ$. (In fact, existing solutions also incur an extra factor of $1+ε$ in the stretch for weighted graphs, and an…
Consider an unweighted, directed graph $G$ with the diameter $D$. In this paper, we introduce the framework for counting cycles and walks of given length in matrix multiplication time $\widetilde{O}(n^ω)$. The framework is based on the fast decomposition into Frobenius normal form and the Hankel matrix-vector multiplication. It allows us to solve the All-Nodes Shortest Cycles, All-Pairs All Walks problems efficiently and also give some improvement upon distance queries in unweighted graphs.
The Minimum Eccentricity Shortest Path Problem consists in finding a shortest path with minimum eccentricity in a given undirected graph. The problem is known to be NP-complete and W[2]-hard with respect to the desired eccentricity. We present fpt-algorithms for the problem parameterized by the modular width, distance to cluster graph, the combination of treewidth with the desired eccentricity, and maximum leaf number.
We study the decremental All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) problem in undirected edge-weighted graphs. The input to the problem is an $n$-vertex $m$-edge graph $G$ with non-negative edge lengths, that undergoes a sequence of edge deletions. The goal is to support approximate shortest-path queries: given a pair $x,y$ of vertices of $G$, return a path $P$ connecting $x$ to $y$, whose length is within factor $α$ of the length of the shortest $x$-$y$ path, in time $\tilde O(|E(P)|)$, where $α$ is the approximation factor of the algorithm. APSP is one of the most basic and extensively studied dynamic…
We consider the parameterized complexity of the problem of tracking shortest s-t paths in graphs, motivated by applications in security and wireless networks. Given an undirected and unweighted graph with a source s and a destination t, Tracking Shortest Paths asks if there exists a k-sized subset of vertices (referred to as tracking set) that intersects each shortest s-t path in a distinct set of vertices. We first generalize this problem for set systems, namely Tracking Set System, where given a family of subsets of a universe, we are required to find a subset of elements from the universe t…
